Ok you might have mentioned the larger engines ,but the best small diesel in the world has got to be the little air cooled lister .These little engines have powered everything from cement mixers and dumper trucks upwards ,and the number that still power commercial fishing boats is colossal .Why because you don't need a water cooling system,so no block to get slugged or heat exchanger needed ,no electrics needed to start it ,so no starter motor or alternator or battery and you've got a build quality that goes way above the specs needed. All you need is a starting handle to swing it over and clean fuel then off you go .The little Lister that was In my 16 foot heavy clinker boat was at least 25 -30 years old and was considered by some of the older fishermen as a youngster

I would have added the Mercedes Benz OM 617. 3.0 litres, 5 cylinders, indestructible, and still powering W123 taxis in third world countries. These engines have saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war zones and should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I knew a girl who drove a Mercedes 300SD a turbo diesel, it was pretty sluggish but once going ran great but hers overheated horribly to where water coiuld not be added and the dash made exploding sounds as she drove it wildly overheated for hours weeek after week, I finally took it to a Mercedes shop and he said the head was so cracked it needed a new /used one however the rest was fine! I know there is no motor that would continue to run with essentially no water in it for hours and months!
@adow77
@adow77 6 лет назад
You were lucky to get the turbo version in the US - these were never exported to Australia - something to do with the turbo fouling the RHD steering column. I gave both my children 300Ds as their first car. My daughter traded hers in for a later model at 500,000km, and my son's is still going strong. The bodies rust and the interior gets tatty, but the engines just keep on keeping on. If I had the space I'd get one for myself.

Good video. The 60 Series Detroit is DEFINITELY one of the best diesels ever built. As a trucker, it's been my favorite for years. Video caption was a little incorrect however, as it left out mention of the 11.1L. I drove trucks with both the 11.1L and the 12.7. Both were great engines. Still my favorite to this day. As a Mercedes driver for the past 22.5 years, I also have to say that the old 5-cyl. passenger car diesels were one of the best diesel engines that have ever been installed into a passenger car. Shame they weren't included, with the exceptional quality and service they have provided for the past 40 years. Many of them are still on the road today as daily drivers.

The 7.3L International Harvester v8 was also known as the Navistar T444E turbo diesel, and when the computerized variant came out in 1997, it became the most well know version, the Ford 7.3L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel. the best engine that ford has used in their pickups ever. and many (including I) think it is the best engine International has ever come out with and hasn't been beaten to date.

4:01 Money Maker Detroit 60 series 12.7 L from 1999 still going strong today on an International 9400 Truck, after 3 overhauls,1 transmission and both differentials rebuilt, bulletproof engine still gets 5.85 gallons per mile, not the fancy 6.5 mpg of the newer, sensor plagued crappy DEF monstruosities out there, but I would rather be on the road than brake down every month because of some sensor.

I'd also say that the Yanmar GM-Series deserves a spot here: They are providing power to forklifts, small and semi-portable generator-sets, and probably half the world's inventory of sailing boats. And if treated with at least some care, they are basically indestructable.

And yet another "Greatest Diesel Engines" list that fails to mention some of the most significant diesel ever made. The Toyota 2L is a 2.4lt 4-cyl diesel which was introduced in the late 1970's and is still being produced today. Individual examples have exceeded 1million km and 10k hours, and several millions have been produced. It has been used in everything from Cressida and Corona cars to Hilux and Land Cruiser models to forklifts and minibuses. The Toyota 2L rivals the Mercedes-Benz OM616 for the most reliable engine ever made. (The 2L, despite being similar in dimensions and capacity to the MB PM616, actually nearly matches the larger OM617 5-cyl for outputs.) Then there's the Toyota 1H-Z 6-cylinder engine from the Land Cruiser models, and the Mercedes-Benz OM604/5/6 engines, the naturally aspirated diesels that had the highest specific outputs and the lowest noise.

Yeah my father has a Detroit Diesel with almost 2mil on it. Never had the bottom end rebuilt but replaced the turbo a few times, flywheel, injectors, etc. Costs a fortune when the smallest thing goes wrong. It was about 2k just to have a guy *look* at the flywheel.

Duramax but none of the Deere diesel engines? Deere made at least four legendary engines as far as good performance, fuel economy, and reliability are concerned. There's the JD 404/404 turbo, JD 466/ 7.6L, JD 6068/ Powertech 6068, and the 6081/Powertech 6081. All of these engines are capable of going 10k hours or more, while being worked hard every day for years. We have a JD 4455 with 7800hr on it, that is pushing past 185hp and has never been touched other than to change the oil and filters.

34486 SCI the only thing the IH 466 and Deere 466 share as far as I know is the size. The IH is crossflow I believe while the Deere has the intake and exhaust on both sides. Both are good engines, but the Deere was designed specifically for use in tractors and other equipment, the IH was more of a truck motor as far as I know.

Ye I checked tractordata to get engine specs and the bore and stroke are far differnt, deer had a much longer stroke, smaller bore. the 466 in my 1066 has exhaust on right and intake left.

404 was a tird. 301 allis chalmers was way better. Power tech is based on the 466 isn't it? Did chevy copy Plymouth to get 350? Just because 2 engines share a displacement doesn't mean they are copies.

The 'Diesel' diesel, (first picture) actually appears to be a 4 cycle engine. For the Wartsila effort, you could also mention that it stands 4 stories high and has a 300 ton crankshaft. Like others, I was disappointed to not see a 2 stroke Detroit. I worked on 53, 71 and 149 series and admired the way they thrived on hard work. The ear-splitting screaming roar of a 1600 hp, 16v 149 TI in a WABCO Haulpak, carting 170 tons of iron ore up a hill, I remember well from the '70s.

I have a 7.3 diesel in my Ford service truck, it weighs 12000 lb and about as aerodynamic as a toaster. I get up to 20 miles per gallon. Is this average for this engine? I never had a diesel before. But it doesn't seem possible. Every time I fill up I check it. Sometimes I'll get as low as 14 miles per gallon. I have another service truck the same size, but it has the 5.8 gas engine Ford. That averages a little under 7 miles per gallon.
@snoopytheace4487
@snoopytheace4487 5 лет назад
If your 7.3 is getting 20 mpg than you must have absolutely no weight and almost no throttle. My 7.3 with hydrogen cells gets only 17 mpg. My family owns around 10 7.3s, the average for them is 11-14 mpg. I am calling bull on your numbers.
