Buying a game that is finished, works and never need an update.
@wraithlord9879
@wraithlord9879 3 года назад
When was that? Pong? Because back in the day they didn't do updates, they had to release patched versions of the game for those who hadn't got the game yet or those with money to waste buying the game again.

But there were very few games that were released in a state of something like cyberpunk. They were mostly complete or if not at least actually worked.

@@mrpontyboi there still are very few games released in the condition Cyberpunk was. And it was only released that way because people were whining that it was taking to long to finish. Updates will always be required even if a game is in its most complete state when released because security protocols change and heck minor things can be improved that may not have been possible at released.

The big one you missed is out-of-game-engine cut scenes. Back in the days when your actual in-game character was a poorly rendered sprite with only a bare handful of pixels, it was commonplace for the designers to tell the important story beats using other media, ones capable of rendering actual recognisable human features. Whether they were carefully-rendered animations or dodgily-acted video footage, they were the only way you got to see what some of the in-game characters were supposed to look like.
@Rettke
@Rettke 3 года назад
Along with that, Intro movies. Back in the SNES, PSX era all games had their Intro movies, almost always pre-rendered (Tekken 3, Final Fantasy VIII to name one of the greatest) and you'll usually see them in videogame stores. Nowadays almost no games have intro movies.

Sad face for dwindling couch coop - love a bit of gang beasts and overcooked with my wife and our girls. The thig with online gaming is, in theory it should be the most amazing experience ever, the reality is people are generally just awful, and will question why you are alive for deigning to play a game that you aren't "good enough" at. If you roll your number, take a key., if not take a fate card.

Strategy Guides are still a thing, mostly for really complex RPGs & open world games, and still somewhat useful as you don't need to keep a web browser open while playing. Of course, there WAS the official strategy guide for Final Fantasy 9, in which half the book is pointers to a no-longer-functional web site. If the people who wrote that book could think of a better way to undercut their own market, I can't think of one... I'm still ticked off about that bl**dy book. On the other hand, the final printed guide for Skyrim is no joke. It is, I kid you not, about the same size as what a telephone book was when telephone books were still a thing.

Here's one that's older than almost everybody here: PC gameplay accelerating with processor speed, potentially ruining forward compatability. I got a new motherboard on a PC around 1990 with a faster CPU and some of my games became essentially unplayable because the player avatar moved too quickly.
@tristanwegner
@tristanwegner 2 года назад
There used to me tiny programs for that that slowed the CPU back down to the wanted levels. I also used CD slow down, to the CD would not spin up to like 52x speed for a few seconds on each level load - I rather waited 2s longer than have that annoying noise.

I can think of at least two more: One: Loading music. In my innocent youth, games came on cassette tapes. It took five minutes to load the game. So there was not only a loading screen but also loading music. Especially the Ocean Loaders are considered classics of C64 music and bring tears of nostalgia to anyone who listens to them. Two: Copy protection that required the game manual. At one point, game manuals were very thick. That was because in addition to the instructions they contained a short story, or sometimes a quite long story, that sometimes even had something to do with the game. Why? Because of the copy protection system. Before you could start playing the game, you had to insert a word. "Insert the third word in the second row of the fourth paragraph on page 36". If you had a legal copy of the game, then you also had the manual. If you had an illegal copy, then presumably you didn't have the manual and couldn't enter the game. I don't know if this actually worked very well since most illegal copies were probably cracked versions anyways. But I had legal copies and inserted LOTS of words during the years that this was done.
@nellitheretrogamer8666
@nellitheretrogamer8666 2 года назад
Some individual old games had really wicked copy protections anyways. Alternate Reality: The City was one of the most devious ones. On the face of it, it looked as if the game disk had no copy protection at all. It could be copied like any normal disk. But the owner of the copy was in for a nasty surprise. It was an RPG and pretty soon after starting the game, his character would fall ill and slowly die. Since it happened a lot in this game anyways that you fell ill for a number of reasons, it wasn't obvious that this was part of the copy protection system. But the owners of a legal copy were also able to heal over time. The owners of an illegal copy withered away and died. It was a fun game anyways. You were able to get drunk to the point of passing out, you could overeat, and the way you dressed had an effect on how the NPCs reacted to you. Oh, happy days.

I have zero interest in trying online gaming- obviously unless it’s with friends who live far away, so I will miss the co-op mode, if it fully goes; I haven’t done it in ages, but, when I was at uni, I used to love game nights with a few friends. It was a great social event, that you could enjoy even if you weren’t a gamer, or didn’t fancy playing much; you could be a spectator, or just dip in, and out, when you fancied playing, while having a few drinks, and laughing at the antics of gaming friends. There was always a great atmosphere, even when things would get a little more competitive, and the friendly insults would start to fly haha. Despite many other people obviously loving it, I just don’t see any fun in online gaming with/against strangers, and, at my age, I doubt I ever will; I know it’s possible to make friends that way, but it’s just not for me; but hey, if other people enjoy it, then that’s great; I just hope developers find a way to fully incorporate BOTH online, AND co-op modes, and don’t get rid of the latter altogether. 🤞😀🤞

Nowadays many players struggle with cloud saving - some games have it and some games don't. It is an unpleasant surprise to get a new mobile phone or PC ( or experience some technical difficulties and you have to uninstall and install everything again) and continue a game that you like - only to notice that there was no cloud saving and you have to start the game completely from beginning.

Tutorial levels are not entirely gone. Splatoon has you start out in a tutorial stage when playing for the first time. As for limited lives, it still makes sense for some 2d games. Sonic Mania Plus, for example, has an interesting take on the limited lives system in encore mode. Not sure if Fire Emblem counts due to resorting to only instant game overs when the lord character dies and in specific situations other characters when a chapter goal require you to prevent a certain character from dying. Never the less, classic mode in Fire Emblem arguably still has emotional weight to it; especially in Shadows of Valentia, where the death quotes sound more painful than the being merely injured quotes in casual mode. Especially with the newer game trying to have you develop an actual emotional bond with the characters you are fielding.

Tutorial levels are still tutorial levels and are still conducted in a relatively safe environment in most games. Just because they’ve got better at making it part of the story doesn’t mean it’s not a tutorial. Health bars are still extremely common. They may not be in CoD, but the majority of third person games still have them (like all Arkham style games, all “fighting games” like Mortal Kombat, Ghost of Tshushima, From Software games etc.) even some FPS games still have them, like Doom Eternal. It feels like a few of the items on this list are a bit of a stretch to say the least.
