@@TheComicBookReport What I like best about this channel, so far, is that people seem to want to talk about what they like, rather than what they're mad about. Just trying to keep that energy going.
@@seannyhan2254 I’m all about celebrating the things we like :) I think generally this community has been overwhelmingly positive and I find that so refreshing as well! 💪👏 Plus all these awesome commenters have given amazing recommendations over the years 📚
The Planetary Omnibus is the best done in one book of all these, but, it does need an appreciation of general comics and pop culture, to get the most out of the homages and analogues encountered by the team.
@TheComicBookReport I also thought the Batman / Planetary issue was one of the most fun comic issues I've ever read, because, it was a fun challenge trying to figure out which Batman artist, Batman storyline or Batman film/show was being homaged by Cassaday.
It's an interesting list. I do have the Venomnibus on my self waiting patiently for its turn. I also want to catch up with The Planetary as Warren Ellis is one of my favourite writers. I would suggest to add the Big Damn Sin City to the list. It's a full Sin City experience, a real threat for all those that are into crime noir stuff. The next one would be Batman Hush omnibus. It's also a complete experience, some stories are great others maybe not so much, but overall it's a good read.
Good list. Soe of mine that I read recently are Deathstroke by Christopher Priest, Miracleman, 52, Immortal Hulk. I have had the Death of Superman Omni for years and haven't opened it yet- I was 8 when that whole story came out and loved it, I'll have to see how it holds up.
How is that Deathstroke run? Would you say it’s good for new readers? Loved 52! 👏 That Superman Omni is great but it’s a big boy! Hope it holds up for you
@@TheComicBookReport yeah the Priest Deathstroke is the Rebirth run...I hadn't read any solo Deathstroke prior to that and I enjoyed it and could follow what was going on. Priest gives you all the info you need. I think it's out of print now though :/
I've read slott's solver surfer and Cates' venomnibus past year and they were most excellent. I'm looking forward to reading the Gwen-Pool omni at some point this year.
Yeah, those were both some of my favorite omnibuses from this past year. I had the opportunity to read. Gwenpool was also really fun. I really enjoyed the art on that title and overall that entire run feels so different from a lot of the other marvel books I had been reading.
@TheComicBookReport I'll add Gwen-pool to my reading list for after my Read through of Miles Morales, but before I start my thor read through. Is Spider-Gwen on your radar? Have you read it or do you plan to read that book?
Cable and Deadpool is a great series, and a great omnibus. I was buying New X-Men in real time, and it was odd and different. I don't think it has aged well. Venom by Cates and Stegman is a solid volume and tells a great story. This was my first exposure to Cates, so I didn't realize, at the time, that he was a one trick pony. Planetary by Ellis and Cassiday is a perfect stand-alone omni. Here are some suggestions for, what I think, are great stand-alone omni's or hard covers. 1) Murder Falcon deluxe HC, by Daniel Warren Johnson. Can't recommed this highly enough. 2) Kamandi omni by Jack Kirby 3) The Demon HC by Jack Kirby 4) Shade the Changing Man HC by Steve Ditko 5) The Creeper HC by Steve Ditko 6) 4th world omni by Jack Kirby 7) Doom Patrol omni by Grant Morrison and Richard Case. 8) Squadron Supreme HC by Mark Gruenwald, Bob Hall, and Paul Ryan 9) Gravel: Never a Dull Day HC by Warren Ellis and Mike Wolfer 10) Oblivion Song Compendium by Robert Kirkman and and Lorenzon Di Felici 11) Poison Elves: The Mulehide Years by Drew Hayes 12) Amazing Spiderman omn1 1 by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee. Honestly, if you want a complete Spidey story, this is it. 13) Captain Marvel: Genis Vell by Peter David and Chrisscross 14) Legion of Superheroes The Great Darkness Saga by Paul Levitz and Keith Giffen.
Sincerely appreciate your time writing all this out! Love seeing some recommendations I’ve yet to read! I started oblivion song once upon a time I’ve considered going back to read it all. Did you find the ending satisfying?
While not ideal & incredibly Horrorshow to read outdoors and in public: THE INVISIBLES COMPLETE STORY OMNIBUS by Grant Morrison I bought back in 2013 would be one of my faves. Except that overencumbered tomes like this are kinda wish why I prefer Massive Boxsets to collect up to 10-20 Tpbs. Like how Locke and Key, Hellboy, Saga & Mangas do it. More Portable and More Flexible when traveling with them too!
Animal man Jeff Lamire (no one ever talks about that one). Silver surfer slott, monster size Hellboy. Swamp Thing omni 52 and Collins, spiderverse omni (just fun), tmnt Batman (also just fun). Doom Patrol Grant Morrison, cosmic Ghost Rider, Venom cates. Animal man Morrison. Off the top of my head for one and done
Appreciate these recommendations a few on here I haven’t read! 👏📚 From memory the swamp thing and animal man new 52 runs were gripping! Also enjoyed the crossovers
I know they called it a compendium, but it's a hardcover and the size of an omnibus, so how about the Locke and Key keyhouse compendium. An omni by another name is still an omni, right?
@@TheComicBookReport Hello again. Thank you for the question. So just like you mentioned how yes we all ready may know Superman but this story itself almost is self contained. I would throw these 3 myself. For old school fans. The S.H.I.E.L.D. Complete collection. (Steranko) and Guardians Solo Classics. Fun books and for maybe the younger crowed Jason Aaron The Heroes Reborn. Pretty much one and done. There are a lot more but we be here all day. Again the ones you picked are pretty awesome.
I know a lot of people hate on the fraction FF run so I was surprised to see it on your list. I haven’t read it yet but I bought it for cheap a few months ago. I figured I would give it a chance but since I read everything in order it will be a while before I get to it. You’re right about gwenppol, I don’t think I could ever read something like that because it doesn’t look like something I would like but maybe I would? Agree on a lot of your choices but haven’t read some of them. Never got to read planetary but I plan on it eventually.
Of the three titles you pointed out I do think planetary is probably the strongest series. I am an unapologetic fan of that run on fantastic four but I do not seem to be the majority opinion here. I think part of it is I’m a huge fan of all of the creators. I love the variety we get in that book. Gwenpool is probably not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found the art style to be captivating, and it was just so refreshing different from a lot of the other marvel titles I had been reading.
@@TheComicBookReport I read silver surfer and although I liked it and didn’t really have any problem understanding anything with limited Silver surfer knowledge, I don’t know how I like it being canon. I think it kinda works out better as an elseworlds or out of continuity story but that’s me. I don’t know if the fraction run is good or not but I think the problem is it came after hickmans run and it’s hard to follow up with that.
@@fishin4bass2002 I can see your argument for that Silver Surfer run it feels so very unlike everything that came before and after. And I agree I almost feel whoever took the book next was setup to fail by comparison. I think taking that run as its own thing it works. I know I enjoyed it
@@TheComicBookReport Im reading all the main titles in order so when I get to the fraction run I’ll have a different perspective than a lot of people who never read the older issues. I’m surprised how many people haven’t read older series and just jumped into modern runs. I can’t do it, I have to start at the beginning.
Man,I really enjoy your channel and think you do quality stuff but man I can not get on board for the type of stuff you enjoy. Only one book you recomended would I even consider reading. Allred and Morrison are two of my most disliked creators and superman and gwenpool are two of my most disliked characters in general. I do think the cable and deadpool omni looks like it could be a good time though....but deadpool really hinges on if you like the writers comedy. Either way we can like different stuff, you got a pretty nice channel going. 😅 I read the whole Venom series and thought it was alright....the art saved it. Planetary I also read and own but probably wont read again...
Ok I love this! First thanks for watching especially if we have differing tastes 😅👏📚 Also love what you wrote about Deadpool a great point I had not considered-do I gel with the writer’s comedic style as that drives the strength of a comic featuring Deadpool. I think there’s truth in that from my experience with that character. I will say that Cable & Deadpool comic run was a high water mark for me for the character in many way because while there are a lot of punchlines and jokes I felt Nicieza had enough depth of character to avoid having Wade come across as just a caricature rather than a person of substance. Your comment has me curious though what are some of your comic book favorites? 😁📚📚📚
@@TheComicBookReport as far as one a done type series? Monsters by Barry Winsor Smith is a recent one and done I'd highly suggest. Kill or be Killed by Ed Brubaker is another great one. Watchmen is a obvious great one and done book. Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender is great if you have even a passing knowledge of half the characters.
Love the idea of a one and done paperback list! Thanks for the feedback. In the meantime I did have a 10 best paperbacks I read in 2023 video: Top 10 Comic Paperback Editions 2023 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rVgWSuSkNWA.html
