About Dominion - you have mention the same issue my game group noticed: too many actions by one person. We have introduced one house rule (after all - who can stop us?! 🙂) - max 7 actions per person. If more players it goes even lower - but speed the game without taking the fun away.

Either you both have a great memory or you do a lot of research on the 10 games being rated because I also have 300+ games and I could not imagine trying to discuss them all with such clarity of thought. I’m really enjoying these videos! I’m fairly new to modern board games and enjoy learning more about different games. I love this format because the games you discuss are somewhat random. I’m going to pick up Maglov Metro. Sounds like a good one for our group. Thank you!
Dominion intrigue can drag on, same with dominion dark age. Outside of those two though most dominion games should end well before people get a chance to have long turns. My wife and I typically play with an automa deck to see if our deck building was actually good or not. Basically, it’s just another deck, but it never buys action cards. It only buys provinces, silver, and gold, and it buys whatever the most expensive one it can afford is. Basically, any deck slower than it would have been better of not buying action cards at all. Thus, it’s the bar you set every strategy against. It’s a great way to test out cards and see how they stack up. Long turns should disappear rather quickly after people get a hang for it.
I don't miss Back Chat because I'm trying not to buy as much these days. I miss Small Talk, but mainly the IAQ/informal conversation section. I DO enjoy the chat during this cool new series - keep up the great work!
They went through this before. They have ten bins that are assigned ten numbers. They assign ten shelves ten numbers then use an algorithm to pick certen games from said shelves. These games go into the ten bins, ten at a time. Then they preten to pick one but they really just go in ascending order, to ten.
LOL I wish we were this organised!! 😅 the actual science behind it is more randomly pulling from shelves but trying to mix in old and new.... and a range of ratings 😄
Love you guys! Tiny Turbo Cars sounds really interesting. May have to try and find a copy soon. This series is great and I love throwing it on while mini painting or studying! :)
Aww Maggie. I allign perfectly with your thoughts on Terraforming Mars and also Ares Expedition. Interesting, since usually I feel like I lean more thinker than themer. I miss back chat and small talk a little but this series is great, too.

I'm kind of shocked that Sheepy Time didn't resonate with Maggie! I think thematically that game is really fantastic. Mechanics-wise it's fairly simple, but it has fun comboing. It's not a top 10 kind of thing, but it doesn't apologize for what it is, owns what it means to do, does it extremely thematically, and is elegant and smooth. It's a really good game and I'm so extremely surprised it has low marks from you both!
I'm still really enjoying these. Keep them coming! I was excited to see Dominion this episode, as I really like it. However, I might be one of those players that likes to build one of those "draw more cards" decks. 😬
Great discussion! For the games here I've played, I agree with your thoughts. I need to get Merchants of the Dark Road to the table with the family to see if it's a winner. I've played it with my friends who like crunchier games, but the family might really enjoy a mellow game like that.
Suburbia is one of my favourite games so maybe I do need to give Maglev Metro a chance as well, being from the same designer. Too bad I don't know anyone who owns it and our otherwise excellent public library collection doesn't have it either.
This is a fantastic series! I was curious how you'd handle expansions / alternate versions of games - it was neat to see both ways in one video: Terraforming Mars x2 and Dominion x1
Still love this series! I have Maglev Metro on the shelf but still haven't gotten around to it. I think there's a solo mode that I'll have to take advantage of soon... Bullet💙 gets a lot of love, but I've never been much of a Candy Crusher so I doubt I'd get much joy out of it either.

These videos just breeze by. Great job! I haven't played it, but Merchants of the Dark Road looks so great that I would have a hard time getting rid of it, even if the game-play is mediocre That one looks like it would be fun to dig out maybe once a year on a cold, snowy winter evening. Although, I'm not too sure how many of those you have in Australia 🙂.
I find your ratings for your collections fascinating. I tend to only keep games that I rate an 8 or higher. Perhaps a little lower if it fits in well with my gaming groups or family. If I ever rate a game lower than a 7 that puts it immediately on the cull list.
I've wanted to play Maglev Metro solely based on hearing you talk about it in other videos. I only managed to play it once (really need to find the opportunity to play again).
I love your take on TM because I feel the same way! TM was one of my first “big game” purchases and I just loved it. Ares just fell flat for me. I didnt understand why so many reviewers liked it more simply because it was a shorter game? That didn’t make sense to me since I felt like the slow build was lost in that shorter game. Ares just isn’t for me. While TM doesn’t get to the table as much because it’s a 2.5 hr game, it’s just a better game, and like you said, I’d just rather play the better game.
Love this series. Interesting to hear your thoughts on Merchants of the Dark Road; I’ve only played it once so far, but I had similar feelings after playing. Which was disappointing because I bought ALL the stuff, including the sexy coins. Because three color metal coins! I suppose I could sell the game and keep the sweet coins… 🤔 I do superlove Maglev Metro. The player board engine building really makes that game fantastic. Plus the amazing components. When we first got the game we kept wondering if we lucked out and got a deluxe copy. No, they’re just all that nice.
Unfair is a family favorite of ours. 90% of the time we play with the World Peace Game Changer so that eliminates all of the “take that”. Have you tried this before? We also use the Game Changer that allows us to see the next round’s city event card so we can try to plan for it a little. Such a great game and looking forward to the newest expansion.
I know that you two are not big fans of co-op games, but I am curious as to whether you ever tried Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition that way? My husband and I have certainly found it to be a challenge! I also enjoy it solo.
We haven't actually! We prefer competitive games so much that we just went straight to that mode and never looked back 😂 but now I'm very intrigued to try it. Thanks for the suggestion (and sorry for the delayed reply we are back from DTW and catching up ❤️)
I don't really get into polyominoes, area-control, or tower defense type games, so for a popular as Ark Nova or Isle of Cats are Terraforming Mars is more my style.
I'm always a bit surprised by people's love for Terraforming Mars. I've played it a handful of times and every time I kind of felt the same as you Amy, "Yeh, that's fine." Maggie, you were saying you love to watch the three things come together on the main board, but for me that was one of the negatives, that not enough of that happens. I think that's why Ark Nova (though I find the comparison a bit of a stretch) is so much better. In that one I actually get things done. Oh Amy!! I feel your pain about getting rid of something that was hard to find! It's so silly of us to keep it, but I understand why you have it. I was completely drawn into Merchants of the Dark Road based on the look and the production as well, but pick up and deliver is my least favourite mechanic, so I stayed away. Glad to hear your review of it to confirm my feelings. Ironically, Maglev Metro is probably the only pick-up and deliver that I enjoy because when you deliver it adds to your engine, so there's a point to delivering them. I was going to back the extra maps, but then bravely cancelled my pledge since I've only played the game twice. I'm sure I can pick them up in retail at some point if I really need them.

Do you play Terraforming Mars with the Drafting variant? It still won't be the most interactive experience but adding drafting makes it MUCH more interesting and you have to consider what you're handing off to your opponents. So you need to pay more attention to what they are doing as well as recognize those times you should hate draft a card that would be too beneficial for them if they got it. Drafting does add a little bit of extra time to the game but the play is so much more interesting that it is well worth it. Also, we always play with the Prelude expansion which gives a boost to the start of the game which tends to offset the extra time required for drafting. Highly suggest that playing with Drafting and Prelude is the way to get the best out of TM.
No but the problem with this is that Just One is a non-gamer game. This would be brought out at the start of the night and would then overstay its welcome like how they were saying. Gamers would find it too simple and might be turned off by the cooperative aspect.
I'm quite surprised that you manage to rate a game 7.3, 8.2, 6.7... 😧 For me a great game is a 9, a good game is a 8, and an "ok" game is a 7. Below 7, its going straight out of my collection. And i never rate a game "10", because i think its just impossible 😁
We score each game but I have to give my family a cockeyed look because they cheat...every...single...game. I do enjoy the game, but they refuse not to talk too much and share information...lol. So it's never really..."just one"
