Briggs: suggestion: add to your descriptions, “closest airport (commercial flights)”. Retirees like to fly for far-away vacations, and families fly in to see “grandma and grandpa”. Great vid!

I had a grandma that lived in Prescott and lived there until she was 88. I have another relative in Traverse City and they love it there. Coincidentally, I was looking just the other day at Athens, Ohio. Keep those future retirement videos coming. Glad you mentioned the one location where even though you retire there, there will not be many jobs if you want to keep on working. Appreciate that! ❤

@@NotThatBob Thank you! She lived a very different life! She was with Ringling Brothers Circus 🎪 for 1938,39,40. My mom was born in 1941 and she stayed on after the birth. She rode an elephant named Ruth and also did some trapeze work. She knew all the famous clowns including Emmett Kelly. My grandma was proposed to by Karl Walenda (my mom named my brother Karl as my mom always loved that name). When she was passing away in a Prescott hospital/nursing home my mom and her sister brought black/white photos of her and placed them around her room. The hospital staff was running from every direction to see the photos. They couldn't believe it. My grandma was also a hand, glove and purse model and wore lots of dresses for modeling shoots. She had her own dancing school in Detroit in the 50's and taught ballet, jazz and toe. She was a single mom in the 50's when it was rare. And to raise little girls and have your own business being single was really something then. When I was young I didn't understand how different and unique her life truly was. I miss her so much 🥰

Interesting Josh. I don't know much about the market, but based on what little knowledge I have of economic supply and demand, this is the best time to venture into the market, but the only thing holding me back is the constant fluctuations in prices, which it's not supposed to be a problem, but i really need guidance because i want to use this avenue of everything being on discount to build a portfolio that pays dividends and takes care of me in retirement.

I grew up in a neighboring city. The only medical center is Kootenai Medical center. Good for the basics, but you will have to go to Spokane for any specialist services. They are extremely expensive as far as housing. The locals have been priced out. I grew up in Spokane. We visit there off and on and it is nice, but I would not live in Idaho as it is way to conservative. But if that is for you then it might be a good fit. Art on the Green is this weekend and we might go. Fun event... But I prefer living in Spokane. More amenities and better medical services. Housing prices are better too. Courdelane is considered a resort town. Or a place where the wealthy have vacation homes. Oh and there is a doctor shortage. Not being helped with Idahoans going into Spokane for services. Their is still a low inventory of homes(1 1/2 months for Spokane) for sale in both cities. That is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. They can't build homes and apartments fast enough. 😊

This is a great, very informative video. I like warm winters and cool summers. Texas is just far too hot three months a year. In the other nine months we get great weather. Texas has no state income tax. Texas also has a great veterans benefit package. Texas also has great health care. The VA has provided me great medical benefits and l have not paid a dime in real estate taxes in many years. Thanks again for this great video.
@bonesandbells
@bonesandbells Год назад
It's only disabled veterans that don't pay property taxes, but they're still quite high for the rest of the retirees and the DV exemption isn't properly funded from the state hitting some communities. It helps to move out of the cities and more expensive suburbs where the new $100k homestead exemption will go further.

I retired from the military in the early 1990s. I have lived in Texas for over 30 years. In all that time l have experienced very minimal property and storm damage. My inlaws have been here for over 40 years and they have never had storm damage either. I am 100 percent disabled so l pay not property taxes. I am nearly 75. Our VA is great as far as health care goes. My meds, check ups, followups, surgery, cardiac procedures... All without cost to me. I get glasses, knee braces, hearing aids, C-pap machines, canes, walkers, X-rays, lab work and much more. All my VA care is superior to the care l can get with Tricare. I feel very blessed to be living in the no state income tax... Lone Star Republic.

@@rayb.6537 Yes, it certainly didn't look like good weather this year with week after week of storms, or when it got so cold in winter 2021 that Texas had to go begging for electrical power from its great plains neighbors, who frankly resented doing everything right and not on the cheap so they had enough in the cold, only to be warned they might have to suffer brown outs to help their profligate relatives.

Ray & all, I have been very blessed with living in Texas. The Veterans benefits are great. We get three months of very hot weather and then nine months of mild weather. Medical care at my local VA Hospital is better than other local hospitals I have used in the past. I pay nothing in seeking care with the VA system. I am not sure what you are referring to regarding storms and tornadoes. About 2 1/2 years ago we had a winter storm where l was out of power for about 48 hours. I was also out of water during that same storm. Still l managed to work each day. I had food and candles on hand. I used my dog and several thick comforters to stay warm. I used paraffin wax in tuna cans to cook with. The storm was an inconvenience but not the end of the world. Two of my brothers lives in Florida and their weather is almost as hot and they have had four hurricanes in a single season. Texas must be doing something right because we gained two congressional seats in recent years. That is more than the gain of any other state. Several states lost seats to our gain. I have lived in NY, TX, CA, IL, and PA for extended periods of time. I have also lived overseas and in Canada. I would not trade my life and lifestyle in TX for any of the other states or even living overseas... My warmest regards. Because of my loyalty to the Lone Star Republic does not mean you are wrong. It just expresses my preferences for the last 30+ years. Many places have far more homeless people than does Texas. Texas is also a border state which presents its own set of problems. God bless America & God bless Texas.

HSV is the largest gated community in the country and has 9 amazing golf courses and 11 lakes. The HOA dues are about $100 and you can golf for $20-$30 at the courses most times of the day. It's about an hour from Little Rock and 35 minutes from downtown Hot Springs. Miles of trails, tennis, pickleball, etc. here. I know more people here in a year than I did 50 years in CA. There's a ton of people moving here from all over and it's a hidden gem. You can buy a home for $200k up to several million dollars. But most homes are EASILY under $500k. Lake and golf course homes do go for a bit more (sometimes) but it's definitely worth checking out and letting people know about it. Thanks for your videos!

I grew up in Columbia Missouri during elementary school years. It's also where one set of granparents lived, so I got to see the city from the inside out. It's as much or more a college town as your Iowa city, hosting University of Missouri - Columbia, Columbia College (formerly the girls' school Christian College), and Stephens College. The population swells during the classroom season and then drops off during the summer. So if you don't have big city tastes, there are still entertainment activities (theater, etc.) hosted through the college programs as well as other commercial diversions. You're also centrally located to a lot of recreation areas. Within about a 200 mile radius is the Lake of the Ozarks, Branson Missouri/Silver Dollar City, Six Flags over Mid America, and several Mark Twain National Forests in the south of the state. The hunting and fishing are excellent. For historic areas you have Hannibal (site for Mark Twain's stories), Independence (where President Truman was based), and St. Joseph where many of the covered wagons left for the West. The crime shouldn't be nearly as bad as it is in Saint Louis and Kansas City. You could also get a rural property a short distance north of the city if you wanted to do hobby farming or live off the grid. If you like travelling around the United States by car, RV or motorcycle, Columbia is very close to the geographic center of the United States, making it very easy to do trips for about one to two weeks.

I understand the idea of life expectancy, but if your are moving to a place to retire, isn't your life expectancy already pretty much determined? With that said I would think weather, and healthcare would the only retirees would be concerned with. Great video! Thanks for doing all the research I am too lazy to do.

I had the same option the first time I heard him mention life expectancy. In another video he summarized that the life expectancy was an indicatory of several other factors for a town. To be more specific, I like the mild winters with some snowfall, not too much, enough to play in but not enough to stop day to day activities and I am ok with warm weather in summer but don’t like hot weather. I love autumn but not a too rainy fall and am ok with some spring showers… can you create a list of places that offer this weather set up? Or Am I asking for the impossible?? Lol.

Call it Presskit; and you’ll blend. I’d like to hear the stats for crime, cost of living please. It’s hard to tell given the Tsunami of new folks moving here. We are 20-30 degrees cooler than Phoenix. We have 4 seasons which a lot of people like. And though gardening and growing trees are big sport, WE DEFINITELY ARE NOT IN THE DESERT. We are considered “Cool HIghland Plateau”. Only Places like Flagstaff are more alpine. We have pine trees and snow. We are surrounded by high desert, but Prescott itself is a different climate zone. At 5,500 feet ASL the air is very clear and dry. The big natural disaster is not rain or flooding (we are high up, water drains down, yeah?). The natural disaster for us is and will be forest fire. Take a little peace of mind that our airport launches the fire-bombing aircraft from a modern facility, and we cover an area of 2.5 of the surrounding states in aircraft fire supression. We are a horse and cattle culture, most everyone is Mega-Maga and more people carry weapons for self-defense here than almost anywhere per capita. If this rubs you the wrong way, this may not be the town you want. When I moved here, the schools shut down for the opening of deer season, and it was common for the Dr.’s office to have a hitchin’ post at the walk up that got used every day. We host the oldest rodeo, and the worlds biggest water fight. It’s extraordinarily beautiful, and the people remind me of Iowa.

It's commensurate with the costs in Marietta GA. The U of Rochester is an excellent school with a highly rated medical school and affiliated teaching hospital, and the Nursing program has been rated #1 nationally. They also have one of three institutes for stem cell and regenerative medicine research, the other two being Stanford and Harvard (of interest to me as I have a crippling genetic disease). NY social services are second only to Rhode Island. I have a larger social circle in NY as well. Rochester is on Lake Ontario, about 70 miles from Niagara Falls and Canada, and about 50 miles from Letchworth State Park, with its 600ft cliff walls, 110ft waterfall, and 66 miles of trails.

You're not going to be able to retire cheaply in Traverse City. There's very little housing available under $500K, if you are thinking of some type of subsidized housing in the area , there's a 2-5 year waitlist. The city has a growing homeless population that they like to corral in an area near the old state hospital called "the pines". which sort of keeps them out of the tourist core. Essentially a bunch of tent encampments hidden in a wooded area... I will say it's a great city to visit, the houses in the 6th street area and east of downtown are gorgeous and very well kept up... the 17,000 population is misleading as the nearby townships with larger population contribute to heavy traffic and there's a bunch of commuters . There's a decent rush hour in town especially for an "up north" Michigan sort of town. Decent local bus service into the business corridors., OK airport for such a small area, good higher end restaurants for visitors...but somewhat unaffordable for lower end retirees. . Hospital system is good and is probably almost the only hospital north of Grand Rapids in the LP that can "fix you", place a stent, do advanced surgery etc, .

I've been waiting and waiting for you to mention "Preskitt" (Prescott) Arizona!!! I almost fainted when I heard it on this list. I relocated from Manhattan, New York (yes, you read that correctly) to Sedona, Arizona back in 2011. Sedona was wonderful but we decided that Prescott would suit us better since it's a slightly bigger city. I love it here. The weather is perfect -- not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter, the people are friendly and welcoming (far more than Sedona). There are a lot of Conservatives but it is beginning to balance out. I don't know -- I just find it a pleasant and safe place to live overall. There are universities, educated people, fun people, lots of meet-up groups, and almost anything you might want here. However, if you crave the big city, Phoenix is an hour and a half away. As for flooding, yes, this can happen, but a bigger problem here would be fires. They can get close... Anyway, thank you for finally mentioning this nice area!
