I enjoy your videos Rotem. I had been disrespecting the pentatonic scale for too long and I've reformed. I actually knew more than I thought, but was missing some important aspects.

Your approach is really cool because you mix the technical with the “feel” and it really helps get the students to understand what they are playing on a much deeper level

Have you noticed that major and minor pentatonic are one in the same? When people play major pentatonic, what they're actually doing is putting the 1 in place of the b3 Rather than imagine two different pentatonic scales, I find it helpful to substitute the b3 and b7 with the 3 and 7 to create major. This helps greatly to keep track of the scale degrees! It also helps to see where the chords are derived from the scale accurately. Thanks for all the videos!

Oh yeah, level 10 sounded really cool. Love that 6th tension added in. Sitting on the 9 makes it very meditative, reminds me of middle eastern music, like Qualli music maybe, with droning pedal tones. Or like, Jeff Buckley - Dream Brother. The chord at 13:27 is in Dark Shines by Muse at the 3:14 mark. It's one of my favorite sounds, and the solo in there is spooky and tense, it demonstrates the concepts you mention put into practice.

This is how I teach beginners improv as well. A little difference: instead of the five positions I teach them two diagonal fingerings. In my experience it's a little easier to remember than all five positions. After that I DO teach the five positions, mostly as a preparation for the diatonic fingerings.

The last level was key to help me understand the flavor of the Dorian mode, but it's so useful to think it as a pentatonic with 9 and 6 instead of the full Dorian scale. I actually think that combining the two concepts gives you more freedom because i tend to have different approaches when I improvise with pentatonic (with added 6/9) rather than the Dorian scale. Don't know if it's just me though 😅

I like exercise 9 where you move the pentatonic across the fretboard without stopping. Not trying to make music at that point, but just focusing on the correct notes.

Rotem, a rookie question - what’s the make of the guitar that you are playing? Judging by the thickness it’s a centre block and not a hollow body? A very cool looking axe!

Mmm… i just put on the radio .. tried the notes until I found the pentatonics… and then just play them again and again over the neck adjusting to the feel of the song. That was much more musical then going up and down a scale. So my colors come from the notes that fit the current song.

How I tag my colour.. is sometimes I intentionally slide to random note and get lost making my muscle memory useless and all the sudden the feel or the colour kicks in.
