Wow! What an extreme comment! If you're this hard on me, I assume you're even harder on yourself. Mind if I tell you a few helpful things? It might help you have more realistic expectations of yourself and other people. 1. Making music is about making progress. I'm not here to show off, I'm here to help people make progress. I never claimed to be the best guitar player in the world. This video isn't supposed to be about how good (or not good) I am at soloing. It's about helping people make progress on their own solos. 2. I absolutely could have played better solos, but I improvised each one. And my focus was about executing the concepts, not about playing perfect solos, so I spent more time on the concepts and scripts. 3. As a creator (and a musician) its important to recognize that in a perfect world, I should be able to write the most perfect music and create the most perfect lessons I possibly can. But the reality is that I also have to pay my bills, I have to eat food, I have to maintain relationships with friends and family, and I might not always be in the best mood or in the clearest state of mind. If you wait for your situation to be perfect before you produce anything, you'll never produce anything. You just gotta get stuff out there and try to do better next time.
Pay him no heed. Anybody that spends their time criticizing people on the internet obviously have much bigger problems. You specifically stated in the video that you were concentrating on 5(of many more) levels of soloing. I’m sure you could do a video lesson on bends, vibrato, arpeggios legatos Mr Robotos and all the other words that I don’t know yet but for those of us who are truly trying to improve their guitar playing skills and get to the next level this video is perfect because it doesn’t Iola too much at once. Why would I want to practice bends and vibratos if I haven’t learned the basic theory behind soloing? If that guy wants a video on bends and vibrato all he has to do is type in lesson on bends and vibrato 🤯 after that he should apply a NASA to be a rocket surgeon.
@user-lj6bt5se1i, let's assume that what you say were true for a sec, He still would be an excellent instructor and has a very high tech and innovative method to clarify abstract concepts. This is only possible if you're extremely talented and have a good functionning brain. All of which commands respect. You don't know how to respect that is a fact. You on the other hand are a very unhappy person to be able to be this bitter. This is another fact. We enjoy and love SPJ as an artist and as an instructor. I've learned tons from him and am not done. that's the last fact. That said, I'm sure you make very good bends and even better vibratos, or maybe not. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well what did you want? Paco De Lucia showing you how to play for free? Ive learned quite a bit from him myself and am pretty grateful that he takes time out of his life to make these videos. Im sure that you are so good that you play large concert halls with women throwing their panties at you every night.
I am for like 3 years on his patreon school stuff. I still learning a bunch and getting better on guitar everyday. This guy is a bug in the Matrix! Jesus!
I watch a lot of guitar learning channels but you are the only one that can articulate any theory, technique fully without creating confusion to the viewers.
Just found um, he's pretty awsome ! This guy has a great soloing ear The examples feel like they can be in a song I also recomend you LoG Sounds He has a playlist of shorts about theory and applying it on guitar, as well as longer videos specifically targeting chord tones Other stuff as well, but this is what helped me the most
Thank you so much! Glad you're enjoying yourself. If you want over 200 more lessons, check out my online school: www.scottpauljohnson.com/patreon Got a free trial going right now
No idea if you will see this mate but I had to leave a comment. I've been playing for a few years and have wanted to learn how to improvise/solo for a long time. I'm not exaggerating when I say I have watched 100s of videos, bought countless books and paid for several online courses. Yet I'm always left feeling frustrated that nothing is sinking in. I stumbled across this video and your way of teaching caught my attention. The visuals you used in this video alone really connected with my way of learning. As soon as the video ended I joined your patreon and I've started my journey along your guitar theory course. I'm only a couple of hours in but I can honestly say that this is the first time I am getting to grips with the scales and understanding the reason why they work and how to use them. Your teaching method is great and your visuals and practice routines are just perfect for someone who is more of a visual learner like myself. I highly recommend your patreon to anyone who is in the same position as me. I'm finally enjoying learning again! Thankyou for your lessons and I look forward to continuing my guitar journey with your guidance!
The way you explain things is so perfect for people just starting out with theory. Calling a pentatonic scale the "skeleton" of a major scale... you really have a mind for explaining concepts, and as someone who works in developing training programs across different industries, anytime you're looking for a career in education, it's waiting for you :).
I am taking guitar lessons, and right now, the focus is on soloing. I have not received the tips from my instructor that I got from a few minutes of video here. Thanks, Scott!
I have had countless instructors. None of them ever taught me any of this. I think one taught me the major scale but never taught me anything about the 1, the 3 or the 5th note. No. It was always pentatonic minor, first box "let's jam" at the end of the lesson. This is a really good channel. I can't wait to get going on this.
I had really good teachers growing up. Using a lot of Solfège explinations. However I've never got passed noodling around scales. Even tho I knew them all, the cage system, the modes and chromatic scales. I never quite got how to use them properly in dynamic situations. I will be sure to study this diligently, thank you for your service 🙏
I can't believe it took me until now for the algorithm to find you [the caged video was the first one suggested]. You're one of few RU-vid guitar channels that gives great quality lessons, and have the best format with the screen layout and the overlays on the frets by far.
It didn't matter if you were going to post more free content because I was planning on being a patron as soon as I found a job. But I appreciate that you are 👍
Hi Scott! I have been a patron for a little over a year. I'm pretty much a beginner but I think I may be a bit beyond that in my understanding of theory because of your great courses. I just finished your Music Theory for Guitar course and have improved in my playing more than I ever imagined. I will continue to be your student as long as you keep teaching. Becoming a patron is the best musical decision I've ever made. Thank you so much! Mean that!!
Im 52 I have been playing for 3 years. Binge watched your video this week. Please keep making your videos. The way you explain theory is amazing. Cheers From 🍁
I always come back here to watch your videos and I noticed most are gone and you haven't been here for awhile. I truly hope everything is ok with you. Your a good person!!!
The animation is absolutely astonishing. Would love to see you go through solos with the same idea and breaking it down, would be extremely informative. Thank you for the quality content!
You know, I’ve been trying to figure this out for years and it’s never made sense until I watched this video. I was always trying to change the scale I was using with the change in chord progression… for instance Am pentatonic when Am is the chord, and when it changes to C go to the C major scale or one of the major modes… it made soloing super challenging. This makes a LOT more sense and seems a lot more accessible than what I’ve been trying to do this whole time… and maybe I can try what I was doing before but this video allows me to walk before I can run. Thank you!!!
Despite being sadly few and far between, my eyes always light up when I discover a newly released video from you Scott. The practical detail, and the superior quality of your graphics is awesome ... thanks so much!!
Absolutely amazing video. I have never understood how to move around when soloing this clearly before. Your new color-coded moving covid looking thing is amazing. Maybe now I will be able to stop noodling and actually connect my tones together to make beautiful sounds. How do you not have 1M or more followers?
This video is so good it feels illegal to get this for FREE! No, for real, this is THE best and especially the most comprehensive video I have EVER seen about scales and music theory in general. I love Paul Davids and Tomo Fujita and they for sure are superb teachers but this video is record breaking when it comes to on line class! The best thing about social media and RU-vid are videos like THIS - thank you for your great work!
I’ve got over 200 more lessons online. And a weekly live Q&A featuring a live camera guitar. Free trial going on right now. In case you wanna remedy that guilty feeling ;) www.patreon.com/ScottPaulJohnson
Awesome, love your videos! They're a treasure trove for an amatuer self taught guitarist. Watching your vids has vastly improved my solo's and improv. Thank you so much!
You Never cease to amaze me with the video tutorials you put out. I am finally going to get some time to sit down and start learning. I definitely need to join your patreon membership. Thank you for all that you do! Very much appreciated!!!!
the second solo is great too! you have a very nuanced touch, i have played for decades and watch guitar videos all day, you have great taste and a unique voice on the instrument!
WELCOME BACK SIR! I watched ur video 3 years ago and I can say that i've improved throughout these years upon stumbling to ur video. Greetings from Philipines 🇵🇭
I really really really love the way you explain your lessons, it is soooo clear. I have been looking for so many years for a teacher like you to come along and I can't believe I found you. I also love the way you use the fret board and diagrams to illustrate your teaching. I will sign up to your online lessons for sure. Thank you so much and God bless!
RU-vid has suggested me your caged system lesson for years and I always ignored it idk why but it was fantastic Could you please make a lesson about timing and how you can practice with metronome? Thank you ❤
It's taking it to the next level and justifying the reasons or the underlying structure with the help of visuals which is unmatched. Extremely valuable content. Thanks!
Thanks Scott! Your tuts are awesome, I regret not finding you few years back when i'm a student and have lot of time to invest in music. Will go slow n steady!
so excited to see you back you are the one that got me soloing for the first time. someday ill be a world famous guitarist and you wont even know its all thanks to you
this is great SPJ! I always think a master of a field is one who can explain complex concepts in a simple way. you have an unmatched skill for taking something that is 'mystified' for beginners (like 7th and 9ths) and explaining it in a way that can be understood perfectly. the system of layering existing knowledge before gradually introducing new concepts, in this video and others, is a fantastic way to teach. keep it up! you are creating more guitarists in the world every day. :)
Hi Scott, thank you very much upon your generosity of Guitar teacher, you teach well, you enlighten up the audiences and prove you’re not like other overwhelming Guitar players that do negative introduction or overwhelming lessons. Caged system demonstration opened up rolled out map in my head, I was navigating easily in each color coding maps to reach certain destination. I made an orange and red outlined directions in tourist destinations to visit. Your lesson was easy to follow, and understand right from the glimpse of your lessons I drew opened map to drive across the country. I watched all your lessons repeatedly to refresh my mind, making sure not to be forgetful and sat daily reminders. Always remember have a daily reminders. Also clarities of your teaching explained well to the audiences, flowed smoothly, and does give full attentions to people with good quality, bold, and kind hearted teacher. He’s not like the other guitar players I come across that explains concepts into shortcuts, this guy narrowed down process resources, cultivated tons of players with a good sense of identification symbols, slash, or marks, that can be slightly confusing. Scott is a good guitar teacher. ❤❤🤗
Love you Dude, this is a great way to think when soloing especially on what next note to choose while soloing. I will sure to be a patreon when I complete my studies and start a job. I just am learning guitar and piano for my own soul and am self learning guitar gliding the landscapes in RU-vid whenever I am stuck. Videos like these are my energy source in this wonderful journey.
dang your video about the using the caged system opened my eyes to the music theory. it's fascinating. it's like millions of brains opened for me, ready to scour for more knowledge
I stumbled upon your channel, and I'm amazed at the ease in which you explain your lessons. It is refreshing. Although, I am not a Patreon contributor, I will continue to watch for new content. Thanks for what you do.
Thank you very much for the lesson! I am very happy to know that when playing chromatic, stop or emphasize on the notes that are in the scale or chord tones. Cheers from Indonesia.
Bro you are the best teacher A simple minded person can play guitar and can become very good at copying other great guitar players But a very intelligent person not only can become a great guitarist but they would make their own sound and they can teach anyone how to play and be so simple I used to watch Marty when i first started but i look back to the stuff i used to learn from him and i can see how much junk and he was teaching and he needed to learn himself Most of his early lesson has been taken of by him i bet You are always teach correctly since day one Thank you
The part about always starting with a chord tone and moving to another made a lot of sense to me. Not sure why I’d not thought that through before. Thank you!
Glad you found that helpful! I think part of the reason you don’t hear it is because it’s more of a melody making rule, and in MY opinion a solo sounds best when it’s about making interesting melodies on the fly. Not everyone shares that opinion though!
First time viewer of your channel, this was a great video for me to try and get over the hump of going beyond power chords and progressing my fingerpicking. Will look into your other links. :)
This approach is really a fundamentally sound method for learning beyond the pentatonic and major scales. These steps lay the groundwork for more advanced modes, and help target intervals in a scale. For example that chromatic movement is really helping to set the stage for diminished scales later on as well as helping to see how more color can be added into a key. Chromaticism really is the entry level for things like harmonic and melodic minor, and the many modes that can be extracted from it. It’s at that point you realize it’s all relative.
