Premier League hardmen are literally on the verge of extinction and we are now seeing more and more actors and fashionistas these days. Okay, that might have been a little sarcastic but the truth is that back in the day there were lots of no-nonsense guys who scared the life out of opponents and you could count yourself lucky if you left the pitch in one piece. I remember Billy Whitehurst running the Cricketers on Bramall Lane and getting up on the pool table after hours to do Elvis impressions with a cue as a mic stand. Total Blades legend from when football was a competition. I miss those days.

I,m probably a bit older than most commentators here but the toughest duel I ever saw was at Tottenham v Burnley in the 1960,s when Mike England and Andy Lockhead used to spend 90 minutes kicking lumps out of each other but at the end of the game still shake hands and walk off in conversation together. A real mens game then,

@simonboothe3387 No, it's not . The Premier League was created to take advantage of the European Nation. So all European players were and still aren't considered foreign. This way they can use the few slots for players from different parts of the world. Back then there were not many foreign players in the league.

Many years ago the great Liverpool Tommy Smith played out his years at Swansea. They came to Watford, where Watfords Roger Joslyn and Dennis Booth demonstrated that lower division teams really were full of hard, tough but fair players. It’s a myth that the hardest professional players were in the top division.

In fairness, Robbo was hard for 90 minutes every game and must have been very difficult to play against. Robbo was generally "hard but fair" - I don't remember him "doing" anyone deliberately. Souness could be a Rolls Royce for 89 minutes but if someone needed "doing"...
