Let's see how different regimes treated different statues and which meanings they have attributed to them. Which monuments survived? Which monuments were eternally removed...like Stalin monument that was destroyed.
Today you will learn about the most iconic as well as the most controversial monuments in Prague. Some of them have been around for a while, like the statue of St. Wenceslas, some were temporarily removed, and some, like the infamous Stalin monument, are gone for good. #prague #realpragueguides

Valerie mentions some people have been banned from the channel. Maybe thats why the comments section has been alot more positive in the past weeks.? There were some ridiculous comments here, aggressive too and had nothing to do with the content.. Annoying to my peaceful and curious mind.. Great vid as always, keep it up gang.. Cheers.

@@RealPragueGuides was I right, or is it just coincidence? Anyhow, as a tour guide in Prague i used to tell my groups that the streets were paved with cobble stones made from the Stalin monument.. They loved that.. Heeee heeee. But was it true? Hmmmnn
@RealPragueGuides
@RealPragueGuides 3 года назад
@@lukoshey79 Yes you were right 😊. There were some pretty unexpected aggressive comments. But that's how it is in the online world... Regarding the cobble stones, none of us ever heard anything like that. We know that the pieces of the statue were disposed of close to Rohansky ostrov. Also we know that some cobble stones in Prague come from different Jewish Cemeteries that were liquidated during the time of communism. Maybe that's what you mean? But maybe you are right. No guides are all knowing and there is always something new to learn.

Great video! I first spotted the Metronome from a boat ride on the Vltava River. Being a musician, and having practiced the piano for decades with a metronome, I was naturally curious about this big machine. I decided to try to find it one day. I had no idea exactly where it is, so I climbed all the way up the steep Nerudova (street) to Úvoz to Pohořelec (streets) in the Malá Strana. But all that’s up there is the Strahovský Klášter. From the river, the Metronome looks like it’s not far from the big observation tower, but that’s not the case. Actually, it’s easy to get to the Metronome. From the Old Town Square, just walk through Pařízská street to the Čechův Most (bridge). The Metronome is high on the hill across the river. It’s a good climb up the stone stairways, but the panoramic view of the city below is one of the best to be had. The surrounding Letná park is spacious and good for a relaxing walk. There’s also the café/restaurant Hanavsky in an ornate building with an outdoor terrace where I enjoyed a serving of duck paté with cranberry sauce, toast, and Earl Gray tea for a little elegance to accompany the scenery! Thanks for confirming for me that the Metronome was what replaced the huge, ugly statue built during the times of Soviet domination. I learned about the Stalin statue and its ultimate destruction during a visit to the Museum of Communism, but I didn’t understand that it was located on the spot where the Metronome now stands. The Metronome is much more pleasant!

@RealPragueGuides
@RealPragueGuides 3 года назад
Hey Chris! No, but maybe we can somehow Instagram it... Valery was mainly talking about how difficult it was to create the actual obelisk, because every time they carved one it broke. They used a piece from the broken one and put it under Emauzy and the last try was put to Prague Castle. But yes, reading about Czechoslovak legionarries is definitely worthwhile. Apparently the only time USA has invaded Russian soil, was to extract Czechoslovak legionarries from Russia. That's only something we've read a while ago, not sure if it's 100% true.

@@RealPragueGuides Thanks. I got my love of travel from my grandmother who traveled the world after she retired. In 1977ish she desperately wanted to see Prague. At the time it was behind the Iron Curtain and she could not get a visa. She decided to sneak into the country and spent a few days in Prague before the secret police arrested her. She said she was not scared because she did not think they would hurt an old lady. She spent a couple of days in jail constantly bothering the guards and they finally deported her to Austria. When she came back to Texas, she said it was worth it to see Prague. When she died in 2012, I took my trip to Prague. I love to visit Europe, but Prague is special.

Chris Hutchinson - if you're fascinated of the Czech legion and are a foreigner planning to visit Prague, time it for the period (summertime) when the "newly" restored legionaire's train is on display in Prague, there's even a great guiding, albeit unfortunately in czech, although some of the guides might be able to do the presentation in english, was to see the train twice, different years of course, but never thought of asking if an english presentation is available....

You forgot the statue of Michael Jackson - in 90´s on the same place where was Stakin a nd now is Metronom Another importatnt statue was a "liberating" tank of soviet army staying in front of today district court of Prague 5 - after revolution painted by pink color, repainted to green and again repainted to pink color by famous controversional artist David Černý --- and than removed. Notice - the stautue of Radetzky (correct czech Radecký) was removed after independence in 1918 - because he was whole his career in Austrian army and was fighting for austrian interrests - while the czech nation was occupied by Austrian empire and farced very havy germanization.... Its the same like he would be fihgting in Nazi army or Soviet (red) army - also nobody would accept his staue...

I'm not a fan of nationalism. I would rather live together with Germans (Austrians) in one country as this country always was a country of Czechs and Germans. The nationalism killed it and now there are only Czechs which is a shame.

I wonder if majority of Czechs feel that way? Maybe it’s just the Czech people of German background such as yourself have that mindset.

Rakousko zaniklo, když se rakušáci nedokázali rozhodnout, jestli jsou Němci nebo Rakušáky. No a Němci s Hitlerem to pak dokonali. Takže žádná škoda, vybrali si sami.

Are you surprised that Czechs kicked Germans out after WWII? Czech Germans caused 1938 and 1939, most of them were nazis. I think revenge after war on civilians is stupid, but it was after WWII and people knew what those Germans were doing during war so I am not surprised.
