@@meganaxeliar with only ~360k populace and ~222k of them in Reykjavik area you will stumble upon relatives (of more or less grades) naturally. the app in question is a just mobile access to _Íslendingabók_ and you know that. :p en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%8Dslendingab%C3%B3k_(genealogical_database) the coverage of islanders born in 20th and 21st century is 100 %, everybody is able to trace everybody else _and_ their grandma's cousins if they so desire. per se not a dating app, but your dating knows all your aunts and uncles and whatnot immediately.

@@rivenoak Again, non-ethnic Icelanders are always the loudest on topics they don’t understand lol. That supposed ‘app’ is not something any ethnic Icelander in this nation uses, nor have we heard of. I’ve never ever heard of it. This is just a myth. It isn’t rocket science to figure out that Icelandic is an ethnic identity, and just like every other ethnic identity in the world or homogenizing populace, you date within your bloodline. Non-Icelanders seem to only just be figuring this out so are fascinated by the fact ones significant other is their distant descendant, so distant that they aren’t considered immediate family. @@Dorisasaurus1133 I think you refer to this www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=colby and that still doesn’t mean you have Viking ancestry. The Vikings invaded and ruled large parts of the British isles so the remains of their languages and heritage is what you will see all over the uk but the rule and the people stopped around the latest at the battle of Hastings 1066. You don’t have Viking ancestry because of 1066 and just because of your name. I suggest you read up a bit on the history and the ancient Norse language and how it co existed along English. It’s also very fascinating. Unless you are nobility, you can’t trace your ancestry back that far. They are the only ones that for sure know exactly where each family members were born married died going back many centuries. There are no authentic, preserved birth records for the rest that far.

My Aunt traced our families ancestry back when I was in high school I clearly remember her saying that we were descendants of 3 Viking Brothers. My 13 times great grandfather was Anthony Colby who helped found Plymouth Salisbury and Amesbury Massachusetts he was married to a woman named Susannah Hadddon Colby who was good friends with a famous victim of the Salem Witch Trials by the name of Suzannah North Martin. I have traced my lineage back pretty far but, it is a good idea to go back and look more into my “Norse Roots.” I love history and it is completely fascinating to learn about my own heritage. I know for a fact though that I do have Viking Blood in my family lineage that’s proven. I do badly want to learn more about my Norse Ancestors but, it’s hard without buying a subscription to genealogy or something like that. I promise I am not just blowing smoke up your ass about my Viking Blood though. These days I am not on good terms with the aunt who did the research, I could ask my daughter to try to get the information though. I should, I’d love to read it and see it

People seem to jump the “Viking” train all because of the tv show. Viking were not people per say or a culture. It was more a way of life essential sea to land pirates. It was a profession more so than a group of people. And funny they assume anyone from Iceland is a follower of the old gods or asatru. Still I’m sure it’s old to hear the same questions.

Question 8 I can relate to, as I grew up In Alaska, I been asked that question by many lower 48ers and individuals I met while serving in the US Army. I got tired of it and started playing into it by answering that we had a modern Igloo that had a 2 sled garage. I would ride the dog sled to school and occasionally I would have to fight off Polar Bears. The funniest part of this was that there were individuals who actually believed it...then I would start laughing and tell them it was a joke

One can ask an Italian who lives in Rome whether he is a Roman? Technically the answer is yes, one of the definitions of Roman is somebody who lives in Rome. So did the Vikings ever do anything the Romans didn't do? (Besides discover America) the answer is no. Everything the vikings did, the Romans did as well. The Vikings raided villages and so did the Romans. The Vikings took slaves, and so did the Romans. What was different between the Vikings and the Romans? The Vikings had better ships and the Romans were better organized.

@@melon7514 well technically Laggatha would be bisexual since she still is interested in men, and I'm not sure whether she was really attracted to the other woman or was just in a state of rebellion because her husband cheated on her and got another woman pregnant and married her. The actress who played her was a real beautiful woman, so Ragnar had to be insane to stray. Most of the Viking men in the show were lousy husbands in my opinion.

Plus, with the geothermal heat, if you get hot in your home, just open a window. :) There is something wonderful about each season... the cozy dark months w/ Northern Lights, the fall with the turning leaves and rainy weather, and the spring/summer when everything wakes up and goes crazy. Iceland is a beautiful, wonderful place and I 100% agree with you... bring a rain coat, LOL

To anyone who is looking to visit someday, definitely make the time for it. A friend and I went in 2013 and stayed for a month, we rented a car and drove leisurely around the country, stopping anywhere that struck our fancy because we were in no rush. And it was worth it. So many good memories! It was expensive, but we counter balanced by not going to restaurants so much and eating a lot of sandwiches in the car. Ps: love your videos Hrafna!
