@@kedrevs4037 let me know how easily it goes on. I am actually thinking about buying a 2nd Tundra just to have it since they aren't making them like that anymore. I have my 2018, but over the course of the next 30 years, I might need another one. Buying a low mileage, 2020 or 2021 and drive it just enough to keep it healthy is what I am thinking about.
I had a black 2020 black Tundra platinum and traded it off with 15,000 miles. I liked it and knew it would last forever but after having it a few months I decided to seek out what I really wanted which was the 2021 Tundra TRD PRO in Lunar Rock. The ride and look is way superior on the PRO. I get so many compliments on my PRO and I’m not sure if I ever got one on my platinum. I paid msrp and actually made $5000 on the platinum. Just hit 28,000 miles on the odometer. Zero regrets
I have a 2012 Limited Tundra with the 5.7 V8. Great truck. Only have 72,000 miles on it. Have had zero problems with it. Get the oil changed every 6 months, as I don't seem to reach 5000 miles in 6 months. Truck is tight with no rattles, smooth engine and very smooth transmission. I do have the thigh support feature, so that may have been dropped on the Limited in newer years. I do haul a small trailer with my 4 Wheeler, and you hardly know anything is following you! When it comes time to trade I will look for another Tundra with the 5.7 engine, but that will probably be years down the road, as mine is just getting broken in! Great choice you made on your "new" 2020. Looks perfect.
Just bought a super clean 2017. Knowingly bought it with a cam tower leak and it was covered under Toyotas transferable extended warranty. Love this truck! The last of the best!
Excellent decision & welcome back. I did a similar decision back when I knew the 21's were the last of the 5.7. So, I traded in my '16 Limited 4x4 double cab for the same exact model in '21 but in MGM color. Got one of the last ones built. One of the first things I did was monitor trans temps and quickly realized that it was a cost savings move by Toyota. If one intends to tow, the cooler is needed. I installed one pretty quickly. Now, the temps are similar to my '16. Another thing I noticed was the throttle response is much improved and feels more powerful. And, the OEM brake controller actually works well. My '16 never worked correctly and I installed the Tekonsha P3 to rectify. No issues at all with my '21.
I picked up a 21 and have loved it. I do tow a bit with mine. Have had zero issues hauling my v8 4runner on a car trailer. Looking forward to seeing g your temps with the rv. The 5.7 has some grunt with the 4.30, absolutely love it.
I have this exact truck 2020 model with 120k miles. Not a single hiccup and does everything I need it to do. Everyone talked about the gas mileage being so poor, but on the highway I have gotten 18.9-19.1 mpg which is similar to what my previous Ecoboost V6 got running 75 on the highway. Now the mpg does drop when pulling or running the mountain roads, but all trucks do. I doubt I will ever sell it. Maybe one day I will purchase a new Tundra after a few years when the bugs are worked out, but the 2020 will always be in the garage. It’s truly the last of the “true” trucks without the start-stop feature and multi-speed transmissions. I was always a Ford guy, but my last F150 just was not the quality of my Tundra. I’m close to putting my 2nd set of Michelin Defender LTX M/S on but the new version. When you go to purchase new tires, move up a notch to a 275/60, it improves the ride, looks better, and makes my speedometer dead on. From the factory my speed was always off 1-2 mph with the stock size. 275 is what should have come on the truck. I have 76k miles on my current set and they still have life left. Great video and nice truck!
I have the exact truck except mine is a 2021 in the MGM color. Absolutely love my truck, not a huge fan of chrome so I installed color match mirror caps and the black exhaust tip. Now just need to swap out the chrome door handles. Excellent choice, congrats on such a great truck.
Im so hyped! That’s awesome man! Congratulations! This thing is awesome same year as mine! I got a White 1794! Can’t wait see you rack up them miles 🔥🔥
Picked up a new 21 tundra CM 4x4 cement off the lot and just last week I picked up a new 24 4runner 4wd premium underground grey. The last of the best. Congrats 🍾
I just bought a 2018 1794 smoked mesquite with 21,000 miles one owner. I had a 2019 platinum black on black before and sold it, that was a dumb move. Glad to be back in a Tundra. I went 2018 because last year of cooler and I did not want a 2021 after covid. All are great trucks and a last of the best. Hopefully Toyota gets things figured out on the new V6. Love yours great call!
Good choice - I purchased the 21 in 9/21 - I too wanted the 5.7. I did add the transmission cooler because my primary reason for the truck is towing my trailer. I sure like my truck & have had no issues. Thanks for your good videos. I’m sure Toyota will get the issues figured out on the 3 generation Tundra - still think they are a good company.
Just bought a 2020 Tundra as well. Was looking to put on a TRD sway bar and the Firestone bags like you did on your old one. I will be towing a 25' RV and with a weight distribution hitch. Would you be able to do a video on how you do your towing setup from the hitch, to bags pressure, to squat measurements? I think it would be very helpful.
You have it right, I just got a 2019 about 8 months ago, and I am 100% satisfied, you are right about the lift kit and stuff, junk squeaks and squawks, man you mess a truck up with that it will never ride right. You are on top of your game, good luck, and keep away from the crazies.....BB
I Ordered a Platinum with every available option in windchill Pearl in June of 2021. The truck arrived at my dealer early August of 21. My truck has 37,000 miles on it and it’s been flawless not a single warranty issue to date. I did add the RAS HD to my suspension, Revolver X4S rolling bed cover and just replaced the junk Bridgestone Tires with the Continental Terrain Contact H/T’s in the XL load and they are amazing. I was on the fence with those or the Michelins but decided on Continental after watching the snow and ice comparison on Tire Rack. The Continental out performs the Michelin in every test. I can confirm the grip in snow and ice is superior to any other tire I have driven on. I was driving through 12-14” deep snow in RWD only to test them and they never broke loose or slipped. Very impressive this was also uphill on unplowed residential roads. Love my tundra I also pull a 7,000 lb 28’ travel trailer with mine.
Great review. I learned a few things I didn't know. And I thought I knew just about everything on the 2nd Gen Tundra. I drive my wife & kids crazy with the Tundra trivia. Lol. Beautiful truck. I'm looking for the same thing but with the 1794 flair. 👍
Absolutely beautiful truck. I have an 18 crewmax limited with a tow package. I snagged mesquite brown. Love my truck, I’m glad I didn’t get the 22 like I had originally planned… yeah the radio is to die for and the interior looks amazing but I don’t regret my decision.
2016 tundra still going strong. Never left on the side on the road or anything crazy. First 100k miles was the preseason for my truck. Planning on making it a million mile truck😊
I bought a new 07 Tundra SR5 4*4 5.7 . I hate it!! First off the starter went out at 250k and a front wheel bearing changed out. Nothing is broke on it, seat fabric looks new. It's my daily driver. Use it for everything. It has 304k on it. Not good, it won't stop running!!!!!
I got a 2020 because of all the stuff you’ve mentioned that it had compared to the previous years. I believe started with the 2020 model year, toyota ditched to exposed high antenna on the front passenger fender as well.
I bought the same truck new off the lot in 2020 in a TRD Pro package. The only thing I miss that I had in my former Tundra was the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM). The TRD Pro also have the fox shocks suspension that makes for a softer ride but I know that is not ideal for towing. I love my truck and I don't plan on letting it go anytime soon. I am pushing 75K on it and I think this will be my SHTF truck even when I am ready to buy a new replacement. It's also blacked out all around, including the accent pieces like the handles and badges.
Thanks for the info and how you plan evolving your "new to me" Tundra. Since 2014 it's been an aspiration to get one of these trucks (was before $35K + new) but the $ priority did not justify it. Now retired and kids out, finally bought a 2020 SR5 premium + TRD OR package upgrades last week. Was gunning for 2018-2021 black, leather seats, and "Nanny" TRD Pro but these are very hard to find nationwide and if one comes out it gets sold fast. With your video, I realize I'm very luck with this 23k miles, first owner Black 2020 Tundra, though short of what I always wanted.
Great job I follow you I have the 2021 tundra limited ordered arrived new Nov 2021 one of the last made I change my oil every 3000 mile Penzoil ultra and amzoil filter element. I created a access hole in the skid plate by Six inch diameter access plate to the oil filter. I ordered the ultimate trans cooler kit cost 1000 dollars Had the hard line and Toyota thermostat and rear TRD sway bar? I installed both. I tow a travel trailer but getting out of camping but still have boats so it will still be used as a tow vehicle. I only have 6000 miles on it as I have five other vehicles, RAV 4 and a 22 corolla hatch Manuel ( last good corolla no CVT or turbo for me) Nissan Frontier, BMW Convertible and 1993 Chevy 3500. Just a note with the price of gas and camping I came to the conclusion that it is cheaper to just drive my Corolla and see the sites and get a room. Towing can be stressful price of fuel and now cost of camp sites. The Chevy sits at the vacation home just to put the boat in and take it out and go to Home Depot. MY a grandson got in the 1993 hey PAPA where is the button to put the window down…I said see that handle Rotate it..his look was priceless…good job..on your purchase TOYOTA is making the TUNDRA name shameful with the new GEN And all the problems
Thanks for explaining all the changes to the Tundra during the Gen 2 years of production. Very helpful identifying my next Tundra after my cureent '15 1794 Tundra goes over 100k. QUESTION: Does the 4.3 rear axle come standard with the TOW PACKAGE or is that another option that needs to selected by the customer?
Thanks for uploading this video. I very much appreciate it. One question for you though. What do you think of the first generation tundra specifically the double cab 04-06?
I love my 21 tundra SR5 with TRD OR package. At times I feel like the truck is big for my needs, I do miss the 1st gen that I had as I felt there was still a decent amount of space and it was just a truck. But my 21 has hauled everything from deer to 400lb bull sharks, has taken road trips with the whole family and everything in between. There are times I wished I got one with the leather/softec inside with the kids and dogs, but that’s an easy add with katskin seats later if I really want to. Aesthetically- I like the 20-21 because they got rid of the antenna on the hood. I do plan to add a transmission cooler later. I don’t care if Toyota says it’s unnecessary- that’s one of the things that I shake my head at.
Still a good looking truck today! These tundras are 500k mile trucks on original engine and transmissions! I own a 2013 crew max and love it! 112k miles and zero issues!
Sweet man!!! Btw the 4.6 is basically a destroked 5.7, it’s the exact same engine with a smaller displacement, not similar to the 4.7 at all. Love the videos!!
Considering upgrading the stock head unit on my 2019. Noticed you did that on your old one and was wondering if you are going to do it again? If so, what unit would you go with? I like the flush look over the floating screen and so far all I have found is dasaita and stinger but have zero knowledge on those brands.
I like them toyota trucks they'll last you like FOREVER!!! but yeah a used TSS, 1794, or platinum tundra (like the one you have) is definitely something I would want.
I was just looking at new Tundra’s today. Expensive to say the least. Wasn’t looking to buy but for a friend. My 2020 looks better by the minute especially considering I bought it for 38k new with a lifetime warranty. Shooting for 300,000 miles before I buy again
Great choice! I couldn’t agree more! I just bought a 2020 Tundra with 37k miles on it. The truck owner works for Toyota, he upgraded the truck with a leveling kit, TRD sway bars and TrD wheels. $41k and in mint condition! Beats a $60k 2024 Tundra by far!
Add the Overland Tailor Tune in your Tundra, Tacoma or any other vehicle for that matter. You’ll increase your horsepower, torque and 2mpg Better fuel efficiency.
Yep, only had good experiences with them in the past. It was $2k to ship from Seattle to Georgia. It wasn't late, but was going to be in the back half of the delivery window, so they waived the $2k. No hidden doc fees, etc. Just price and state sales tax.
I just bought a 2020 Red&Black SX edition. 55k miles for 37,500. The interior isn't as fancy as some of the big 3 trucks but I'm hoping the quality and dependability will make up for it🤞
Been following you for awhile and I to have a 2020 tundra. Will you be adding a tranny cooler? If not it would be nice to see what you think of not having one while towing vs your previous tundra that had a cooler.
I've done one cross country trip without it already, just a few days after getting it and the cooler was the plan. But that comparison is an interesting perspective.
Was the trans cooler an option? My options listed on my 2020 is this lb-ft 6-Spd Automatic Trans w/ Sequential Shift 4WDemand Part-Time 4WD w/Elec Controlled Transfer Case & A-TRAC Tow Package: Tow Rcvr Hitch, 4.30 Axle, Eng/Trans Fluid Coolers, TOW/HAUL Mode, HD Batt & Alt, & Integ 4/7-Pin Connector Automatic Limited-Slip Differential
What are your thoughts for transmission fluid change intervals? I own a 2019 Tundra, was disappointed when I found out Toyota deleted the transmission cooler. Part of my reason for buying the Tundra was that the salesperson said it was the same truck since 2007. I live in a very hot climate in the summer. Considered adding an auxiliary transmission cooler. But ultimately decided on changing the fluid every 50K miles.
Many of Tundras i had viewed had costly common oil leaks and electrical problems that greedy dealers refused to fix and were asking above blue book values. Because in Colorado you pay Toyota Premium Tax. So i went with a midsize solid GM truck and saved more, even with a warranty.
First congrats, I think you did the right decision to go with the 2nd gen Tundra. I am observing a lot of quality degradation in the newer Toyotas. I used to buy always new cars, but now, with the ridiculous pricing of the new Toyotas, and sh*ty quality, I rather buy a used Toyota. I have a 21 Limited CM, and I love it. I did buy all of the parts to install a transmission cooler, and I am just waiting the truck to hit 60k miles and I will install it myself.
I also have two tundra’s a 2017 1794 with the transmission cooler and a 2021 without the transmission cooler. First thing I did is get online and get a factory transmission cooler set up where it comes with all the factory parts you need to install. The only thing that is not factory is the cooler itself because the cooler from the factory is part of the air conditioner condenser. I am very glad I did this now my transmission temperatures are where they should be. I am disappointed in Toyota for doing this. They should never have sold a Toyota with towing package without having the transmission cooler installed. The transmission gets very hot without having that transmission cooler. Install that kit before you start towing your airstream don’t hurt your transmission. You are like me you understand how fantastic these trucks are. I also purchased a 4Runner before they screwed those all up. The 4L six cylinder engine in the 4Runner is legendary. Enjoy your new truck. I enjoy your videos.
I bought a used 21 last year with the 1794 package. Absolutely love it to death but I have had some odd failures. Might be covid gremlins. Shortly after I got the truck the wiper arm fell off while I was driving. Also had the tie rod ends fail at 50k miles. Stock wheels and suspension so that was unexpected.
Windshield wipers by far the worst part of this truck. If it ever starts not moving. Pull the blade housing and clean the splines with a pick. The windshield wipers seriously piss me off haha. I think its something to do with the defrost and angle of windshield .
My 2008 5.7L sequoia is 2 miles away from 221,000 miles. Trouble free. Runs like new. Just had it painted cement gray, added a $1000 9” free floating touch screen and did all the maintenance for it necessary - fluids, shocks, struts, plugs, etc. I am considering a new Nissan Titan….but I know it’s not a Toyota. I really need to stay with the second gen 2019-2021 tundra.
Do you have any issues with the transmission overheating the external transmission cooler was removed for 2019-2021 trying to find a 2018 for that reason? Thanks
I bought a 2020 Platinum 4x4, with 20,813 miles on it. Paid $40k, 2/16/2023. More bells and whistles than I wanted, but love it. Traded a 2020 Nissan Titan 4x4 for $35k to the Nissan dealership.
Looking to buy a 2018 Tundra Limited TRD off road with 112k miles for 34K would like to know anyone's thoughts and if this is a good deal? Truck is beautiful!
@@kedrevs4037I do love it! One thing I noticed quickly and it has nothing to do with the truck other than the catalytic converters. Yesterday 4/14/24, my security cameras alerted to activity in the front yard. Some guy, acting like he was out for a run in the rain was checking out the truck, not admiring but took a peek underneath it. I wasn’t home at the time but my cameras recorded it all. Nothing was stolen as the would be thief noticed my cameras and looked down and away as he scurried off. Today I’ll be looking for a catalytic converter security shield… I live in a good area, or was a good area until 2020… I passed the videos along to local PD, hopefully it was just a recon.
I stopped buying used cars because so far, no one/no Carfax shows a oil change interval at 5000 miles, most people who trade in their low mile cars are lease returns or failed to keep financing, these people always go by the book of 10k miles, it just won’t do. The first two oil Change at least, should be 5000 Or less to convince me to buy it. This black one is so beautiful, Platinum is great
nice review of your new truck. Just so much nicer than the 2022 and beyond. Hopefully toyota can figure it out, but at the moment there is no way I would by a new Tundra. Now finding a 2020 with such low mileage.... well that is supberb. How are the tires on it? I assume with that low mileage that those are still the stock tires?
Hahaha, great question. They had some Pirelli sport tires that were in good condition, but “sport” tires. I immediately replaced with Michelin Defenders
@@kedrevs4037 a small number of engines blew due to a machining issue in the early 2022’s. What other issues are there, specifically for the 2024’s and mid to late 2023’s?
I want wind up windows and doors that unlock by key. Why can’t I buy what I want? I don’t want all that fancy shit. But if they’d be willing to put as many coats of paint and clearcoat on that truck like a mercedes I’d think about it as a tradeoff.
