We found the excursions overpriced, loud, crowded and uncomfortable in general as well as a very poor value for the dollar. We get off the ship at our leisure, walk around a bit, maybe have an ice cream or a coffee, and get back on. The cruise is the vacation for us, the ship has all we need, and we detest lines and crowds, so port days usually see us on the ship except for maybe a few hours if there’s a way to walk off the ship and the weather’s nice. Otherwise we just enjoy the peace and quiet and beauty.

1) To sit in the coffee cafe in peace and quiet is my ideal. 2) Visiting the buffet or the outdoor pool cafe as it is not like Disneyland in the high season. 3) Enjoy the spa without the crowds. 4) We have been everywhere in the Caribbean, so I will go to shore only if there is a special place to return. 5) No line at services.

To us the ship is a destination. We cruise to relax and get away from work and everyday routine. If we cruise in Caribbean we've been in many ports before, saw, as you said, everything we wanted to see and absolutely love enjoying less crowded ship. There is so much you can see in a limited time in port, we prefer to relax on the ship.

I stay on Carnival so that I can hit "Guy's Burger Joint" with NO (let me repeat that!) NO LINE!! Especially in Cozumel which I've been to about 10 times out of Galveston!!

Yes, the cruise is the vacation! The last one I went on I got harassed by my family for not wanting to go ashore so I could just sit and relax. I'm teaching my kids that traveling and vacation are two difference experiences. We travel on long weekends, but mom needs her vacation when we use that tiny two weeks a year I can get free from work. Very much looking forward to retirement as soon as possible.

7:02 am Portland Oregon. Just returned from HAL Iceland cruise. We found we could enjoy the spa discounts on a port day when we had only a half day tour. Also ended up at 2 ports using local transport to see specialty shops or museums that we were interested in. Always making sure we had plenty of time to return to ship. Which ports? Lerwick, and Edinburgh. Took tour, but then took Port cruise shuttle to downtown as ship didnt leave port until 11:30pm. Would have loved a 3rd day in Reykjavik as there was so much to see and do.

For me the ship is the transportation to go and discover new wonderful places, cultures and people. I wouldn’t stay at the ship when possible.

My wife and I go on cruises to visit that country to experience the culture. If can’t afford to cruise and enjoy travel. You might want to find a more affordable vacation . Yes excursions are expensive that is apart of travel.

Everything you guys are saying is true. However, we always use the ship as a vehicle to visit places we are not likely to visit on our own. We usually take the 1/2 day excursions that are offered. Relaxing later in the day is a big deal for us!

Our next 8 day cruise has 4 ports and my husband and I are already talking about staying on board 2 or 3 of them! We love the ship and we’ve been there done that! You can actually enjoy the pool and hot tubs too! I’m tired of being tired when I get back onboard too! Love this video!

My late husband and I stayed onboard at most ports. One port that we would visit was St Maarten. There’s one little shop my husband liked to visit. Once I also wanted to find some Larimar.😅

Not all ports have anything meaningful to see and are for the sake of the cruise line rather than the passengers. In our case when they stress "shopping" as a reason to visit the port, or the time in port is just a few hours we have found we are better off staying on board.

Great review of on and off ship benefits. We certainly stay on board for ports we have been to many times and certainly if the weather is bad. We love enjoying the relaxed pace of ship life! I do however like to try ports again after a hiatus and would go to Nassau another time.

I'm getting a wealth of info from your channel for my upcoming first time cruise, and I appreciate EVERY piece of info! Out of the three port days I have planned, I'm going to stay on the ship for one of them to explore the ship and on another one, I've seen many people do their own "excursion" without having to pay for one because it's simply just a place you can adventure into on your own (ie.., San Juan) so I'm looking into what I can and cannot do for that one. I'm going on the new Sun Princess in 2025 and it wasn't cheap (but I think I got in at a good price because the price keeps getting higher and higher after all of the reviews have been coming out from the inaugural sailing, and people didn't even get to experience the production shows yet so I can imagine how much more it will be once those reviews are out). Again, I love your content and I can't wait to watch more on this channel and your other channels. Y'all are so informative without all the "extra" fluff!!!

Our last cruise we got off of the ship and walked around the new to us ports. It gave us the opportunity to see the area and decide if it is a place that we might want to visit it again.

My wife and I have been on 23 cruises. Mostly 7 day rotations out of Florida. We have never not got off the ship in port. I'm sure it will happen some day but so far never. We certainly don't do booked excursions all the time but we at least get off and do some land walking and exploring. We look at it as a change of scenery.

Prices for pictures have gone up. Some ports I don't like to get off the ship. Some ports-of-call I would take an excursion sponsored by the cruise line. Don't want to be left behind. My late wife sometimes had trouble getting off the ship into a tender. Nassau I would stay on the ship except I want to see the new cruise port. I don't get off at San Juan.

We love doing the excursions instead of traveling to the places when we are going to those places for the first time. We have gone to Mexico, Bahamas, Caribbean so many times that we don't get off if we have been there.

We are infrequent cruisers but when we take a cruise we rarely take excursions and just get off for an hour or so to get a magnet and t-shirts

Those excursions usually are not worth it They put on a bus for hours and they take you to some porous unless you walk around the forest. We used to get off the ship and explore the town unless there is something really special to see and we'd eat native food. You can also go into these stories on RU-vid and check out where the tour goes before you pay for it.

I’ve always found it odd that the first thing people want to do when they get on a ship, is to get off it. But that’s ok with me. I tell everyone how great the port is so I can have the ship to myself.

Port day activities sound like a " tourist trap " where you spend a lot of money trinkets made in China . I agree, stay on the ship and enjoy the view the ship that't about the same as on land .

If I've never been in that port before, I will ALWAYS get off the ship to see it. (Unless I have COVID, and they won't let me. Missed some ports because of that last cruise.) I cruise to visit new places, so ports are my goal, not the ship.

Question from a rookie cruiser: I will be on Sun Princess with 3 other ships in the Dominican Republic. I've never been there, but now I'm worried about there being a possible 14,800 passengers at that particular port. Is it worth it to get off or should I just enjoy the ship?? The FOMO would be strong. I love snorkeling and being on the beach. I also loathe feeling like I'm in a herd of humans. Any advice?

I've been to Nassau I think 3 times. Meh. I was actually wishing that our cruise line and charter company would switch the Nassau stop to something else, in light of all the bad publicity that Nassau is getting these days, but we sail in 19 days and they haven't said anything. Our cruise is a 5-day rock 'n' roll full charter/floating music festival. We'll be staying on the ship for that stop.

Sadly some ports are becoming riskier in terms of personal safety ashore. You should always be aware of current events and issues in the area of the port you are calling on. Civil unrest, violence, crime, protests, strikes, etc.

I just watched your video on the cheapest aft cabin on Disney. When on a cruise and the room is unsatisfactory because of noise, not able to sleep or smokers etc., did you as passenger have any recourse? I would think there should be a warning on the room about the noise, maybe management is not aware of the smoking issue. So as passengers do you complain when you end up in a cabin that is noisy, smoky or otherwise uncomfortable.

Thanks for your video but I disagree. I think because you sail so often you have a different perspective. I’ve just got back from a Mediterranean cruise and it was all about the stops and excursions for me. We spent very little time on the ship. We got off every day and did an excursion. We had a fabulous time, lots of bucket list experiences and great photos. I thought the excursions were well priced because many involved traveling 30-60mins to the town or city. Playing trivia on a ship is just not appealing. If I were on my 50th cruise I’d probably feel differently but for now I am picking cruises to destination that are new and explore.

If you stay on the ship and not get off any port you might as well just go to an all inclusive hotel I love cruising but let’s be honest the cabins are a glorified closet and most people have bigger pools at their house

An all inclusive hotel or resort will not have the same amenities and travel at sea as a cruise ship. The excursions are a complete waste of money.

Still can't see the draw of cruises (being confined). They generate alot of ocean waste and aren'teco friendly. Also too many kids. Maybe a smaller adult cruise to try once.

I so agree! I love when everyone gets off the ship, I feel like I found my own little oasis. I also send my kids on an adventure suited to them and it’s a win win for all of us.
