Which country is the least corrupt in Africa and Why? You’ll find out in this video.
In 1966, while gaining independence from Great Britain, a poor African country was written off as a hopeless basket case. At the time, Botswana was an extremely poor country. The nation had a total of twelve kilometers of paved roads, twenty-two citizens who had graduated from university, and one hundred from secondary school, with GDP per capita of $70. Fast forward to 2007, Botswana had 7,000 kilometers of paved roads, and per capita income had risen to about $6,100 ($12,000 at purchasing power parity), making Botswana an upper-middle-income country comparable to Chile or Argentina.
At independence, life expectancy at birth was 37 years. By 1990 it was 60, 10 years above the African average. The country’s performance is particularly impressive compared with that of other African economies. And over the past 60 years, Botswana’s economy has been one of the most successful in the world.
The country is Africa’s second largest producer of diamond and is the 5th best place to live in the continent. In today’s video we explore the reasons why this rarely heard about country is doing so well at tackling corruption in Africa. If you are new here, you are welcome. Botswana is one of the oldest democracy in the world practising the Kgotla system, and its also special as being one of few African countries to be a direct territorial continuation of a pre-colonial era African state. Botswana was a protectorate and was not a colony unlike its neighbours Namibia, S.A and Zimbabwe which were settled by europeans. Batswana leaders defeated the boers invadors over and over again, and as a protectorate There was pressure to make Botswana become a part of the Union of South Africa or Southern Rhodesia, which were colonies and threated africans terrible. This made Khama III, Sebele I and Bathoen I, whom are known as the three Dikgosi, travel to England to meet with Queen Victoria to whom they pleaded to remain a protectorate under U.K which she approved and they remained until gaining independence in 1966. By 1960 Britain were in the process of giving African states independence and it went smother in Botswana by the fact that it wasn't a colonised by europeans while places such as Kenya at similar time had the Mau Mau Uprising against british colonists. And not being a colony is why it got independence decades earlier than its neighbours Namibia, Zimbabwe, S.A and doesn't have the many issues that they have there like generational poverty as result of being moved to reservations. Because it was not a colony of europeans unlike its neighbours and other african states, it was the 2nd poorest country in the world during independence. Botswana is the best African country in term of living standard, and its success started in the 1800s when Batswana leaders protected their lands from european colonists and seccured their countries status as a protectorate which ensured they lived independently compared to their neighbours and other african terretories. And its one of few African countries which tribal chiefs have a place in the parlament called Ntlo ya Dikgosi. Botswana shows the success of low foreign intervention and colonisation trauma. Till today

I think you lose the fundamental explanation of what colony really means on practicality Botswana is non of that there was nothing of economic interest on British side to colonize Botswana instead British just wanted Botswana to provide a pass through the country like a railway line to its neighboring colonies former Rhodesia present day zimbabwe of which Botswana allowed in exchange for offering protection from south Africa and german Namibia try to read history about Botswana you will understand. Botswana fought against colonialism because it leant how bad a system it was from its neighbors, Botswana never fought to get out of colonialism but to prevent it

absolute nonsense! Botswana holds parliament in english, schools in english, presidential conference in english, then says setswana is the national langue . Their resources and minerals are developed by foreign companies. Get your head out of your ass. Countries like Tanzania put swahilli as their first language, their education their parliament. , Magufuli has placed a policy that Tanzania should have a higher share of their own resources that is why he lost his life. Seretse Kama had a walk in the park, thats why is death was not abrupt and was a natural cause.

The history of post colonial Botswana should be taught in schools all over the world. Many other former colonies in a similar situation to Botswana failed. The foresight of Seretse Khama is more impressive now that we can see the results. He established a government with separation of and balance of powers between different branches. Establishing a government as an organisation for the administration of the country prevented ideologies from taking over. The attitude of the government serving the people rather than the people serving the government has prevented power hungry people taking over.

the video has strong parts like explaining several especific yet important anti-corruption mechanisms, as whistleblowing protection and criminal prosecution of corruption present in botswana. but it intentionally or not falls short in several points like : . robust strong institutions, does this mean well stablished and well enforced formal laws and informal rules of conduct? or it means something else? how much of this can be traced to the one-party regime or even the authority of the founding president of the country? . the colonization intent, bechuanaland protectorate was indeed not a exploitative one, but it certainly was a strategic decision of the british to make the protectorate of bechuanaland, mostly to serve as a buffer or containment space first of the roaming boers free colonists and later of the imperial german incursions. the BSAC mining company of Cecil Rhodes thought that there might be mineral resources in bechuanaland as far back as 1887 but the tswana chiefs, specially Khama III (grandfather of the first president of botswana), with the help of evangelical missionaries and a record of close cooperation with the british authorities, petitioned successfully to the british authorities to force the BSAC to respect the tribal territorial boundaries of the protectorate. . defeating the resource curse through property rights, what this especifically means? what this especifically means in the main industry of botswana by exports, the diamond industry? is it the way that goverment semi-nationalized the diamond mining through shares buyout? or it means other things? this is probably the least explained but one of the most important issues presente by the video. however, i still appreciate a lot the videomakers for its informative intent and the quality of it.

One thing not really mentioned here in the early development, the country did not restrict technical or highly complex jobs or political positions to native-born people only. This is a common problem in poorer/developing countries as they often lack enough educated and trained people to fill those roles and it becomes an oligarchy and/or terminally incompetent fast. The founders allowed foreign workers to hold high-level jobs for quite some time until a few generations could be educated and sent abroad for training and come back...a slow and difficult process.

Botswana is lead by very good good leadership that take queue from its founding father Sir Seretse Khama. They have their African traditions intact in their lifestyle. They put Batswama first in practice not as a slogan. They are against corruption. In power politics the people are brought in by tribal authorities and Gotlas. They are a peace loving nation and that is evident in their conversations language and tone of speech thereof.They are strict on crime and corruption watch is everywhere. lts rare to see a Motswana arguing with onather to a point of a fight. extremely rare..Many African countries can learn a lot about good governance from Botswana.

I am waiting for them to remove the Colonial languages with indigenous language. Is there any other country in Africa with an ethnicity’s name in its official name ?

Botswana is a fantastic success story but it's not one that any other African country can emulate. It's circumstances were too unique.

But they are a pioneer for Rwanda. When Botswana has exited lists of poorest countries in all of Africa and become one of the richest, people of Rwanda are starting to genocide against one another

Very nice vid, but you need to work on your pronounciations. "Mandatory", for example, is "man-da-to-ry". Not "mandatry" (5:01)

Pieter Menten!!!!!!!, how do you relate with him? Is he your idol? Originally he was a Dutch citizen and when the Germans invaded the Netherlands, he joined the nazi and was given a uniform. He was an "Industrial SWINDLER", he WAS THE LAST nAZI TO BE CAPTURED.

Botswana is not all milk and honey as you claim sir you must do a deeper research because most of the things you said are true but looking the fact that we have many young people with no jobs + here the rich get richer nd the poor more poorer pls do not let mainstream media lie to you ask the people the youth of Botswana.

South Africa is bigger and richer but unemployment rate is high though there are many millionaires, billionaires etc Should we complain and not celebrate how the middle class is increased etc. I understand everyone has their story to tell. Its not false that Botswana is better via crime, corruption etc
@Kuricang31

Every country in this world is like that lol so what is your point? Sure the video may not highlighted the income disparity and high unemployment among youths but still Botswana did things to help alleviate the problem unlike other rich countries such as Qatar and Spain
