Thank you for your time and videos....I'm still waiting for my Violin to come in, I actually bought it for my Bride in hopes we can learn together. Being the Rock and Roll drummer 37 years now am looking for an instrument to be able to make music all by ourselves, so please keep up the great videos and wish us luck.. thanks again

The thing I enjoy most involving your videos is your enthusiasm. You really emphasize a degree of care, and as a student it is greatly appreciated. I am just learning and passing my beginner piano knowledge onto my son who is six. Stay GOLD!

yes, rolling. Also you could place your finger sort of on both strings in preparation to help to rolling.

To warm up on the pipes, our band plays tunes that include the scale and arpeggios. I just saw on you tube, violinists warm up to Bach.

Thanks so much for all of your informative videos. They're very helpful, and encouraging, for me through my violin learning process. You're the best!

I see you often hold the bow with the wood bit pointing towards the scroll. That is how it always should be? Mine tend to point towards me, but i think i do something weird with my wrist... I watched your "how to hold your bow" a few weeks ago, but didn't really notice it then, so didn't ask. Sorry for unorganised questions! 😜😂 And thank you for this! Do you also do a video on how to do scales, please? 😊 i would love to watch it if you do!
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 6 лет назад
I do tilt the bow, but thats a more advanced bow hold. I would recommend for now you just play flat and NEVER play with the wood towards you o you will end up in a world of trouble down the line. I go through scales in my violin lessons 11-20.

totally depends on what lever and how many scales etc...you should practice until you get them right...

After only 6 months of learning I would say no as being a teacher requires more than just knowledge of an instrument - it requires many years of experience and being in the field so to speak. If you were to tutor you would only be able to offer the very very basics, if that, as you would not yet be proficient enough even after 6 months or even a year as it literally takes years and years to even get a little bit good. I know its not what you probably wanted to hear, but im being honest. Sorry :(

Hello Allison, when scales are played up and down, why is the last note of the scale only played once before descending again? I've got into the habit of playing it twice, or should I go back to playing it only once? Thanks a lot. Garry
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
It just is, will and always has been. I really dont have an 'actual' answer for you as it is just one of those things. Try not play it twice as its a really hard habit to get out of :))
@gvp999999
@gvp999999 10 лет назад
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Thanks Alison, I only started doing it twice to give the right hand little finger a bit more work to do. Playing it once does make it all sound more fluid though. Thanks for your answer, very nice of you.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
I would advise not doing that though - its not not life or death, but should you ever want to take an exam for example you wont have a bad habit to break and scales generally do not repeat the top note as standard - in the UK at least i should mention.
@WeAreEnglishCubers
@WeAreEnglishCubers 10 лет назад
You could play long tonic scales instead so that tonic lasts for two beats and the rest of the notes last for one beat, that way the top note can be played over two beats which is kind of like what you are doing
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
yes true, but the top note is still traditionally only played once.

Is there any way you could do a video showing the difference between majors and minor scales on the violin. all i can find is for piano. i know the scales are the same for all i just would like to see the difference in were you place your fingers.

Hi Alison, I recently started trying the D major scale starting from the G string all the way up to the B on the E string. I'm only in first position, and I'm not nearly ready to advance to second position or higher. Is it wrong to play the D major scale in first position how I am doing it?

@TheOnlineViolinTutor

well its not really the D major scale. I would just play it 1 octave starting on the open D going up to 3rd finger on the A string

The lady in red Is dancing with me Cheek to cheek you know that song? why you look very nice today Alison. Alison do you think a new bridge may improve my beginner viloin's tone? so far I've had to change rosins, the bow, strings now the bridge if I change the violin then it would be a perfect violin : ) looking at a better quality bridge like a dispeau(? ) my violin w/o the mutes is a bit shrilly. Nice scale vid I'm up to 3rd position Bb scale tunes in fact I ran into Mozart's Symphony 40 wow!

Hi, first of all thank you so much for your videos, they really do help and offer me a great affordable way to learn violin on a budget in NYC! Quick question, when going from C on the A string to a F on a D string as in Minuet in G, is there a trick to making that transition? I've been using the the sides of my second finger and kind of rolling it from the C to the F while changing bow direction. Is that how you are supposed to do that? Thanks for everything, again!

I leaned piano accordeon as a child, and i didn't play for 12-15 years, the only scale i remember is c major. It helps with the fingers of the right hand, but with what i play nowadays (only for fun, for myself and family), i don't miss the scales. I don't improvise, i just use sheet music. On every sheet music the key signals are written in front and for me that means that i can see exactely for which note i have to press a black key. (right hand sinde, left is a completely different story) Same would go with the piano i would guess.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 11 лет назад
well it all sounds like you are playing it corectly, but i just wonder whether you are not used to the sound? The open strings are resonant and ring out, when you put the fingers down they will sound muted compared to that and also the acoustic guitar which, still maintains some level of resonance even when you are fretting. Does that make sense?

Hai alison, Im soo impressed with your violin lessons.i have gained basics of violin from a local trainer.and i wanted to advance in violin.so im following your tutorial videos and its really helping me a lot.i have a doubt which i would like to ask you.while practicing scales violin what approach i should take.whether i should practice one particular scale then goto next or can i lean different scales simultaneously?another doubt is that should i memorize all the scales in all octaves?could yiu throw some light to these doubts..i hope you understood where i stuck in violin. Thank you..
@TheOnlineViolinTutor

You can learn a few scales at a time - usually ones that accompany the level you are at. You can and should memorise scales.

Hi ^-^ I've been playing violin for 2 years now, I used to have a teacher but then I left my classes cuz of uni, then I discovered your videos, which have helped me a lot! I just have a question, if my violin pegs wont hold a tune?, I've been buying new strings because last time I tried to tune my violin I couldn't reach the G tune. I hope you can help me. P.S. I hope you can understand my English since it's not my first language.

Hi Allison! I learn a lot from your videos, which I totally rely on after having a personal tutor for 6 mos. I've been playing for a year now and had been performing live after 6 months of training. Do you think I am competent enough to tutor as of today? If ever given an opportunity, I would like to refer my student to your website and I might as well, with your permission, transcribe your lessons and make it my guide as I teach. Actually, I'm also a transcriptionist, that's how I got the idea.

i've been following your videos for a while now and i must say your efforts are very very much appreciated. just a quick question; when bowing on open strings, my violin sounds much better compared to when i am fretting. note that i am quite a seasoned guitar player and so i am quite used to fretting rather cleanly. however on the violin, the sounds have a muted effect and is not as bright as when i play them on open strings. thoughts? string quality may be an issue (beginnner model)

It totally depends on what level you are at and what you can and can’t do as to what scales would be best to start with. You can easily find scales online if you search. They are literally everywhere.

Hi alison, i got frustrated with this very hard instrument, but being the stubborn person that I am I picked it up agin,as I said I took six months of lessons and my teacher never brought up scales to me,I realized that I was playing everything in c ,no sharps no flats,now I'm having trouble getting used to this adding these into my playing any advice frustrated in Florida
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 6 лет назад
You need to ease yourself into playing pieces in keys with flats and sharps. The whole reason we do scales is because this helps us with that (apart from dexterity etc etc).

Will you be doing a video on modes of a scale? And on reading music? I wanted to task. Is it a good idea to play chromatics and modes of a scale in a go for practice?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
I have briefly explained modes, but they are not used so much in the violin/piano so I didnt really think it necessary. As a guitarist yes, but since i dont work with them and i teach violin and piano, they are not really relevant to violinists or pianists.

I still have yet to hear more than one good reason to learn scales besides “Play by ear”. I don’t plan on that. They were useful when I started. No longer are. I can play a scale in a specific key for an hour. Give me a piece in that key and not one thing remains the same. The visual patterns change. I start from zero. I should mention I’m at RCM 5 piano.
