This music performance lesson explores the essentials required in the delivery of scales and arpeggios then explains the finer points that can be applied in scales and arpeggios in order to generate superb technical control and musical sensitivity. Beyond the accurate delivery of notes, rhythm and fingering, we consider the use of tone, dynamics and articulation. We also consider how to achieve shape through dynamic control, how to play one hand louder than the other, how to play legato in one hand and staccato in the other, as well as other techniques that can be honed through scale and arpeggio playing.

On a scale of 1 to 12 that was fantastic. I also like doing scales in different keys in each hand. Sounds terrible at times but I find it a great way to improve hand independence. Thanks very much. Great video.

I like to practice using the grand scales which combine similar and contrary motion. I actually quite enjoy scales - perhaps I need to get out more.

Although I am right handed, my left hand is stronger, so bringing out the melody line is difficult for me. Using scales rather than melodies to strengthen my right hand is a wonderful idea. I am a woodwind player who took up piano late in life. Learning to read melody and bass lines simultaneously has been a challenge. A video on how to master eye/hand coordination would be most welcome.

Thanks, these are really useful tips! I guess I'm in the minority-and it can probably be put down to being a life-long fidgeter who cannot, under any circumstances, keep his hands still-but I find the repetitive nature of scales very calming and enjoyable. Especially with a metronome! I've only just, at 43, started learning to play piano a few months ago and, although I obviously also want to play actual music, I could literally just play scales all day long and be happy. So satisfying.

I’m still rather bashy but definitely working in that since your other scales vid. Great additional ideas here. Big area for me currently is that LH is very sluggish and keeps coming away from tempo and being generally inaccurate compared to RH. Always been that way but really obvious at new exam tempo! Thanks for another great video

Another interesting approach to scales is with polyrhythms, is challenging keeping both hands on time and the articulation balanced

Really helpful! I'm just starting out so am just learning my scales. Would you say we should spend our scale devoted time knowing all 12 scales in 1 octave before getting into the different ways of playing scales?
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB Год назад
I would certainly get the basics of notes, key signatures and fingering established first. These are then effective next steps.

For 10 years I have practiced all 12 key scales 10 times each every day .As you say , the sharps and flats come to hand with practice . As an amateur , if you skip practice you sound worse and worse until you sound so awful you don't want to practice !

Am I the odd one out as I like playing the scales? The reason is there is no reading from the sheet is involved 😀 , however I do have the problem of using wrong fingers when using both hands going down 😩. Thank you for a great tutorial as always.

Think about where your thumbs need to be coming down and think about the scales that have double 3’s in the fingering.

I was playing staccato notes at half the value of the written note. My teacher said I wasn’t actually playing the note staccato. “How long should I play it for?” I asked. She said, “just shorter”. Being OCD I just couldn’t handle “just shorter” as a answer. Today…… I am practicing to play the staccato note at 75% of the written note. Using a metronome set at 60 bpm, with bell at 4 beats per quarter note, crotchet, I play a scale, and hold each note for 3 of the 4 beats. I repeat this 10 times. I then increase the tempo by 10 bpm. Up to the maximum of the metronome. I then go back to 60 bpm but now I play the notes as an eighth note sounding each note at 75% of the written value of an eighth note. This takes concentration and I am still getting used to the counting but it is working. I am also practicing my scales by playing 3:2/2:3 polyrhythm. I “think” it is helping me with hand independence. I just thought,” what about playing arpeggios, using a 3:2/2:3 polyrhythm. Narrr, I think I will just go outside an play in the traffic. 😀😀
