7:21 "A Wonderful Life is a lot more slow and laid-back" meanwhile there's me running around giving villagers their 5670 gifts aday and trying to keep my farm afloat at the same time
They really missed a great opportunity that instead of Heaven mode they should have added a mode where you play as your child as an adult and you just can keep playing as them for however long you want
This is what I wanted as a kid. They probably didn't do it because they would've felt compelled to create a new slate of characters to replace the aging villagers. It'd have been awesome, but maybe not feasible with time or budget
Yeah but let's remember, the player, the farmer, is the grandson of a farmer, the father of the farmer left the farm to go to the city and do their own thing, then the farmer visited the farm as a kid and wanted to become a farmer, and the cycle repeats, the son of the farmer goes to the city to do their own dream and the grandson of the farmer takes upon the farm of ol gramps, that's why we can't play as the son of the farmer
Is anyone else kind of upset they changed Murrey so much? He was supposed to be a homeless drunk, I mean one of the scenes in the original after you gave him a certain amount of money was that he spent it all on drinking instead of going home to po-po valley.
You aren't the only one, because of his antics made him one of my favorite characters in the orignal. But I guess they thought he was too negative? But they changed his personality too, and his trademark Moi, so it doesn't even feel like the same character. Imo the biggest mistake this remake made of what I've played so far. Outside of that though its pretty great. Only other complaint I can think of is removing some of the orignal records, but I get its to tie it into the newer games
I understand them not wanting him to be a drunk, but yes I miss him being depicted as a more realistic homeless person. The new design doesn’t make me feel guilty and want to donate money like the old one.
I thought it was just me but after reading some of the comments I realized I'm not alone when it comes to preferring the original's art direction and graphics. The original feels gloomy, warm, and cozy, akin to the feeling of a cozy rainy day in real life. The overall atmosphere and feeling of the original felt so much more calm, muted, quiet, home-y, and not overly bright like this remake kind of seems like. Other than that, I think the game is lovely! The original was a great portion of my childhood.
it somehow had a feeling of it being creepy because previous games wasn't the same at all with AWL. it seemed more mature and for us. i feel like the colour scheme could be the same, but alas, new gen are coming in
YES, you totally put it into words! This feels artificial, and like sickly sweet if that makes sense. It's a game I'd like to play in bed at night, but it's way too bright. The art style alone has me hesitant to pay $50 for it :(
Yeah it would be super cool if they did something like what Spyro reignited did with their sound and be able to give you the option to go back to OG graffics in the settings or something! I hope they update it and fix it cause i want it but it almost reminds me too much of Pokémon sword graffics which isn’t bad but it’s just not what I want from AWL
Oh damn that sucks. I haven't played the new one yet but that was my favorite feature. I loved the simplicity of it. And those rainy days were the best! The screen would darken a bit, there seemed to be a slight fogginess as well. I loved.
lol no, it's everyone with a brain. The remaster is horrible and an insult to the original. Not a single soul wo worked on the original worked on this remaster, obviously
I hope so, it's what made the game so great. I remember my character dying and it was the first time I felt like I completed a game and could never return.
this was my absolute favourite game growing up. the only thing i cant stand is the graphics compared to the original. the original is so beautiful. the new one, well, it seems pretty cheap and just watching the horse run for example is pretty disappointing. very blocky looking compared which is unfortunate as i absolutely loved taking in the artwork so much as a kid, id stare at the characters and buildings for hours redrawing them and such. it doesnt look beautiful anymore. its got the modern cheap look now.
I think the problem stems from trying to maintain the same overall look of the game, and keep things like the old map and so on. If they were to build a new game from scratch, in the same style but with a new design, it would probably look better.
totally agree with you. there mightve been some positive changes in the remake but the graphics and art style were not one. The original unique and very beautiful. i wanted to live in forget-me-not valley! The new one looks like a cheap mobile game with horrible coloring and poor stylistic choices. unplayable for me.
Ditto. Animal Parade is such a good game and really could prosper from updated graphics and framerate/loading screen updates. I'm hoping that they are going to keep the trend of "Original made Story of Seasons. Remake an OG Harvest Moon"
I don't only because one of my favorite parts about that game was the diversity of all the rival kids and filling up the school, it was so satisfying. It felt like the town was really evolving. But since they're no longer doing rival marriages that's a huge chunk of the game just... Gone. Really takes away the rewarding incentive to talk to anyone besides your partner and their family
@@dougdimmadome8915I think about this all the time! AP was the only one with rival marriages that I ever played and it added so much more depth to the characters and time progression. I wish they’d put it in all farming sims but I’m not sure how they’d make it work with same sex marriage being in the games now (and I don’t want that to go away either soooo…)
I just really dislike how vibrant it is. I much preferred the more earthy tone of the original. And, I’ve always disliked the character and animal designs. I’m still buying it, but those two things really bother me.
@@nolanschotanus2769 Unfortunately changing the brightness won't change the color palette. It will still look very cartoonish compared to the art design of the original, which balanced cartoon/anime design with more subdued and realistic color palettes.
Agreed. I think they tried really hard to fit the scenery to the more modern anime art style, but this and Mineral Town’s remake just makes me wish even more that we could see anime-styled games that were more grounded again. It doesnt have to be all brown and muddy and gloomy, but something a bit more down to earth would be appreciated.
The only thing I wish they did was add an actual city or somewhere to go when you go up the hill. They had a lot of room to add a lot of new things but didn’t
@@NaraKwonPoD what's on your list? Nothing is coming to mind for me, but I haven't gotten to see all of Josh's content because it's been more streams than videos about this game.
@@mike1024. It's totally all personal. I have the game and have played through it (I live in Japan and speak Japanese). So for me the biggest downgrade are the bubble animals (pink sheep and the cartoon chickens). The breeding process for dairy farming was a huge part of what I loved in the original so it's a downgrade for me to see that removed. And finally I don't like the removal of animal sickness and death! It kinda lessens the whole message behind the game of life/time marching on and ending! But the remake is soooo good imo it's hard to think of downgrades!!!
@@NaraKwonPoD Haha the changes to livestock raising would be a benefit for me! I hated having to breed cows to get milk because you inevitably had cows in queue to become pregnant and were past milking season. It made animals less productive, and I like the productivity aspect of animals in these games. I didn't notice the changes in animal models yet. I do agree the more cartoony designs for animals aren't as good in general.
I know everything is about money so they want things to be "safe" but how cool would if be to have a rated teen harvest moon game? It doesn't need to be M (that would be neat tho), I just want some dark aspects of life and a slightly more realistic look to the game. Almost dark fantasy like.
I'm interested in playing this but I'm also turned off by the new art style. It just looks like the new "story of seasons" style which has weird proportions and overall not a fan of it. i think there's a certain charm to the original a wonderful life art
This was one of my favorite games next to A Magical Melody, and I'm happy to hear and see the quality of life improvements! I would definitely be interested in knowing what was left out and if they changed anything that wasn't so great. Thank you for the in-depth showcase of some of the new features! This is definitely on my repurchase list for nostalgia.
Me too. This game and magical Melody. I'm replaying the magical Melody all the way through actually trying to get all of the notes this time instead of giving up after I only have like 10 left I sincerely hope that they considered doing remakes of more games like magical Melody and Animal Parade. I'd love to see it + honestly I just want all these games to be playable on the switch
To be completely honest, this has made me even more excited to play the remake when it comes out, knowing that the animations are snappier and less tedious. Also the chicken coop bell makes me so happy to see! Thank you for this video, I learned a lot and am glad to hear about all the quality of life improvements.
Sometimes I feel a smidge guilty while playing the current Story of Seasons on the switch because while I love them, deep down I'm constantly hoping Trio of Towns will get a remake as well.
I actually like the heavier tools since using them builds the characters stamina way more compared to the lighter tools, I see they removed this mechanism because of newer gamers but I wish they kept some of the older mechanism through options in the game menu when starting a new file
Playing it right now I definitely prefer the look of the original. The original had this "lived in" earthy tone to it that I just adored whereas the remake feels way to bright and cheerful. I also feel some of the character redesigns are a lot less charming than their original counterparts and hate how they've made livestock immortal. It's my understanding immortal livestock has been a thing for the past few games already but I really dislike it as it takes away the consequences of being neglectful in the care of your animals. That said, I'm still very much enjoying the remake as it's been very nostalgic revisiting these characters from nearly 20 years ago and the QoL improvements are definitely most welcome.
The main thing I'm pissed and sad about is the lack of rival marriages. Like, I understand the removal of them in other games, a bit. Buuuut in AWL, you literally have to get married in the first year. You HAVE to. Meaning you can't date/marry past that. So taking out the rival marriages after year 1 is just absolutely boring and nonsensical! It takes some or the charm and character development away. I wish they'd add it back :(
I appreciate this remake so much. It still has the same magic as the original but with so many improvements. I’m very happy with it and have been playing everyday
I really hope they one day recreate the Nintendo 64 one! The egg festival and harvest festival where my FAVORITE. I hope they keep the layout and everything the same and just make it 3D. I’d probably cry if they did cus I loved that game SO MUCH!!
Hey Josh. Found a cute little game that I think really flew under the radar when it first released. It’s called Bear and Breakfast and after playing it I think it’d be right up your alley.
just tried this game yesterday, it's very chill and have many free time to socialize with people. unlike the original where you have to rush here and there cuz you spent 6 in game hour just to take care your animals and crops.
Don't misunderstand, I'm still absolutely going to play and enjoy this game a ton, but I must admit that I'm kinda disappointed with how bright and modern-anime it looks at a glance. Maybe I'm getting into the territory of someone obsessing over minute details, but there was something about GameCube AWL that felt so... dim. Calm. Like a softly glowing incandescent lamp in a Resident Evil Save Room. It was reminiscent of the aesthetic style of Shepherd's Crossing Ps2, another one of my favorite farming sim games. This remake looks very Animal Crossingified, if that makes any sense. Which isn't BAD, mind you, but I'm sad that we basically never see that more somber, quiet aesthetic that some older games had.
Yea. Nothing wrong with the new art but it doesn't really FEEL like A Wonderful Life. I feel like the colors need to be toned down and made more down to earth.
I have a (and another) wonderful life on GameCube. I was playing a bit ago. The controls are very clunky going back. Hopefully that's been fixed a bit too. I can't wait for this game to come out on the switch. I have so many fond memories of this on my Mickey Mouse TV as a kid 😂
Do we still have to meet the love interest at specific times to trigger the cutscenes? I had an old notebook with all the times and places.. wonder if it will still work 🤔
I remembered playing countless hours in this game. I loved selling stuff in the afternoon near the bar haha, talking to people passing by and selling stuff.
I tried playing Wonderful Life SE on the PS2 as a kid and could never get into it because of how slow everything felt (like, you'd leave your house at 6am, and it'd take 30 in-game minutes to walk to the barn). May have been an issue with my disc or console, but the footage here shows everything moving at a much more satisfying pace than I remember. Might be time to revisit
I was impressed at how many changes from Another Wonderful Life were carried over. Chapter length and a few other things. But I greatly look forward to the new game.
A wonderful life wasn't my type of game, I liked friends of mineral town, DS and rune factory 1/2 a lot more, I just couldn't like the game no matter what, and I think even now with the remake it'll not be for my tastes, looks more like a downgrade version of pioneers, I can only hope it sells good so they make a DS remake too because it was my favorite harvest moon game, so many cool characters, interactions, festivals events...
I never got a chance to play AWL, so I am so glad that not only is it getting a remake, but that it's a good one! I'll def be playing this as soon as it comes out :D
This makes me all the more excited to relive such a precious piece of my childhood. It's clear that they took so much care when bringing this game back and amplifying its features for a modern audience without eradicating the charm entirely. Thank you for walking through all of this with us! I'd definitely be interested in seeing what suffered from the remaking process, though, too.
Probably one of my most played gamecube titles and the gamecube had a lot of gems. But yeah, I don't really... 'like' the new graphic style? As someone else pointed out it's too colourful, but also it looks a little clunky. Like the animations and graphics are actually interrupting my suspense of disbelief.
Absolute missed opportunity not to adapt content from the DS version of the game. It’s a remake after all. Btw you mentioned a good point about the Bachelors not being good-looking because originally Natsume didn’t plan on making a female version till after the success of More Friends in Mineral Town in GBA(technically the first female version).
That chicken bell is a Game Changer. Getting the chicken yard was still nearly pointless ‘cause it still kept the chickens too far away!! If you have a full coop, the rain shower might be over by the time you can drag all the chickens back inside, whoopsie daisy now there’s a risk of them getting sick, and to be stuck turning RIGHT back around and letting them out and HOPING IT DOESN’T RAIN AGAIN. It was NOT that risky to let my barn animals graze. I will never understand why they didn’t just put the Unusable Shed/Chicken Yard right next to the coop or…just make Upgrade The Coop to have a chickenyard attached to it!!!
I was really excited for this but now I'm having second thoughts with all the changes they made to the core mechanics. Feels like the reasoning for interacting with the villagers is taking a step back since we can now purchase our upgrades it seems? Do we still get early access to things like the seed maker and hybrids if we befriend the corresponding villagers?
I did get the seed maker from Daryl year one by befriending! I technically could have bought it but now I can save my money for barn upgrades and the like. Also I think there are some tools and things exclusive to befriending villagers.
Ok. Looks great, and I loved the Original ALMOST as much as the SNES and N64 Harvest Moon games... Now... I hear they are also remaking my favorite Rune Factory Game as well(RF3)... heres hoping you do a vid on that as well. What I'd really like to see though? A remake of Innocent Life, With Tons of QoL upgrades... It was Harvest moon, Except you were a Robot. I never completed it, cause my PS2 Broke. While Harvest moon(now story of seasons) and Rune Factory have new games, and remakes, Innocent Life: A futuristic Harvest Moon Is the only Game in It's Spinoff Series. Also... I saw a HUGE upgrade you didn't mention. Auto-Collect. No more having to pick up and put away one item at a time, one bottle of milk at a time, etc... they pop out or fall to the ground, then it picks them up RPG Loot Style.
I've never played a game for from this franchise, in fact I didn't know about it until I played Stardew Valley and heard this franchise was a major influencer of it. I have been wanting to give this franchise a chance and the more I hear about it, the more I am looking forward to it. Biggest appeal for me is the social aspect and 'growing older'. As much as I love SD, my biggest issue is the fact you don't do much with your children. Quick question are there sprinklers in this game?
Sure they all seem like decent changes for the most part. . .but jeeze it really looks like a cartoonish mobile game. None of the charm of the OG game.
see I didnt mind the sleep thing.; HOLD UP DID I SEE A STAMINA BAR ON THE NEW VERSION. That was the one thing I loved NOT having in the OG version >_> I HATE SATMINA bars in these games. Such a stupid mechanic
Honestly, I preferred the more rustic, earthy tones of the original. Not a big fan of the vibrant, almost chibi-like style. Nice to see the QoL changes, tho.
Yeah the desaturated tones really matched the pure oppressive dread and despair the original made me feel. Everything was a washed out grey, everyone was old or dead or mean. Matched the tone. Unless this new version got rid of that
The issue with a lot of Harvest Moon/SoS games is not that farm chores consume much time, I am thankful to the time saving QOL improvements but the real issue is the time and stamina limitations, it sometimes feel like playing Majoras Mask and not in the good way
I beat the game in two days and less than 10 hours. I guess I thought they’d add some new stuff but basically they didn’t. Sincerely disappointed in the game. But then again it was made 20 years ago and still felt like a 20 year old game. Definitely a waste of 50$. Each character says the same dialogue all the time. Money was too easy to make. Very few unlockables and upgrades. No collectibles. Unfortunately nostalgia didn’t do it for me
I played the heck out of the gamecube version i was not aware that one of the watering cans was supposed to cover more ground that would have been sweet.
5:25 is the horse customizable im assuming? or do you get different options when getting the horse? I gasped when i saw it wasn't just a boring brown. Also I'm assuming you only get the one horse? I know it's not necessary to have more than one but, it's something i had always hoped for the remake
thank you so much for this video man, agree with you on a lot of this stuff. i'm loving the remake of this game way more than the original honestly, i love the new graphics and redesigns for the characters. the homophobes and lgbt-phobes can fuck right off. this is a fantastic improvement and i love this game and the series so much. rock on 🔥
They also took out animal death and allowing you to push animals through the door, which hopefully they update (if you whistle your horse out and want to put him back in the barn, you need to take all animals out and put them all back in)
Yes, they will always give milk (and will also never die)! If they get pregnant they will give extra milk for a little while, but it''s not really worth it since they also won't be able to give milk for most of the pregnancy.
@@JoshGamingGarden Whoa that's worth highlighting! I missed that part if you said it in the video. That was one of my biggest complaints about the game because the pregnancy cycle took so long, you could only do one at a time, and it limited how many cows you could have in your barn because of the space requirement for the baby.
@@JoshGamingGarden yes.... something that i dont like in the old game is too realistic... 😂... how about the farming system ..we must watering plant 2 times in a day ?
