It was later established that the guy driving the boat was drunk. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and died before he could come to trial. His estate settled with the people he hit. It wasn’t the first time he had hit someone either. There was a big story on this in the Seattle Times and local TV stations covered it extensively. Not for the fact that he died, it was eventually established the man had a long history of drunken boating going back over forty years and this was the first time he had ever faced charges. The last time as well.

After serving 24 years as a Merchant Marine I can tell you with complete honesty that there is no such thing as a minor maritime accident. Even if the repairs at the shipyard only cost tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands, the cost of investigations and accessment of fines by the controlling government agencies can get up into the tens and hundreds of millions. Especially when there has to be cleanups.
@glennrishton5679
@glennrishton5679 4 месяца назад
Exactly. In the case of the two ships what looked mostly like cosmetic damage was likely hundreds of thousands of dollars if not over a million just to the one vessel shown. The hull and deck damage possibility included tank cleaning, gas freeing cargo tanks making safe for welding before repairs even begin.
@georgepowe4898
@georgepowe4898 4 месяца назад
@@glennrishton5679 Exactly. Most people don't even consider that the inner hulls and voids have to be gas free before the ship yards can begin hot work repairs. And IT IS NOT cheap. And it takes a minimum of 24 hours forced air ventilation before the inspectors even check the gas levels in the voids and ballast areas.

Some time ago, a catamaran yacht cough fire, and sank in a channel. The owner was ordered - by the Coast Guard - to salvage the vessel ASAP, and for each day the fine for blocking the channel was 50,000 USD. The fire was started by an acetone explosion: Caused by one worker to fiberglassing on one side of the vessel, and the other guy not knowing anyting about the other one, working with welding and angle grinder. BTW, Acetone vapor is like gasoline vapour, and acetone is also like linseed oil, if put in a bag. About linseed oil, Linseed oil is highly flammable due to its chemical properties. It is a drying oil, which means that it polymerizes upon contact with oxygen and forms a hard film. This process generates heat, which, when combined with the low flashpoint of linseed oil, can lead to combustion.

BTW, Vashon's second syllable rhymes with "lawn". And I've ridden enough WA state ferries to know their horns can wake the dead. I don't know how anyone could've slept through that. All I can figure is the person below-decks prolly thought he was PASSING the ferry, not about to be HIT by the ferry. Although ferries don't typically wail on their horns while they're en route to or fro.

Ship, barges, and smaller boats crash into bridge supports much more often than people realize. The Hornblower one is another example of bad seamanship. The proper response is to drop all anchors to reduce the speed at which you hit anything and to have the engine room crew hit the kill switch on the engine. The boat probably would still have hit the sea wall, just at a much slower speed. Like going 1/2 to 1/3 as fast. Crews are not trained in emergency procedures any more and it shows.

This video SHOULD be titled, Multiple Ridiculous Mistakes Published Online." 00:04 - Technically, that's not a cargo ship, locals would refer to it as a barge, maybe a boat, but not a ship. 00:11 - During that segment (which we'll get to shortly), you state that everyone got off the tourist boat, yet here you say it's "full of passengers," so which is it? 04:30 - "Thankfully, nobody was on the boat when it crashed." You've already made it repeatedly and amply clear that the boat was unmanned the whole time. 07:06 - Deryun didn't collide with Kin Shing, a proper description would be exactly the opposite. Also, "shorter" for a ship usually means distance from bow to stern; the script should have used the word "lower" instead. 09:24 - Those safety crews "rushing" to the bridge in Changsha must've teleported into place, because what we're shown onscreen is a City of Miami workboat... and the last time I checked, that's in Florida, which is in the USA, all the way 'round the other side of the planet from that bridge. (Also, see my comment for the 00:04 voiceover error.) 0947 - Venice is in NORTHEASTERN Italy. 10:12 - That is NOT a "three-deck cruise ship" -- according to the MSC website, Opera has at least 8 passenger decks, plus some off-limits to passengers. The tourist ship that was in the wrong place at the wrong time... Okay, THAT one has windows & awnings that look like a 3-deck ship...! 14:02 - You mean "grossly UNDERestimated its speed" (not to mention that the correct ending phrase should have been, "It's not the kind of ship you'd want to have crash into you.") 15:54 - Tuapse is on the NORTHEASTERN coast of the Black Sea, totally opposite what your voiceover states. 16:19 - That's a lot more than "floating toward" another ship -- that's running into another ship. Do you guys pay any attention to your scripts (and have a native English speaker write them) before publishing your videos? (No, I don't want to see another video just like this one, thanks.)

I enjoy these videos but, the thing I find most irritating about the ones, particularly from the US, is the annoying, "Oh my God," repeated over, and over, and over, and over, . . . . . ! Can't they think of anything else to say!

If I were about to be run over by a huge boat, I don't think I'd be worried about some stranger on the internet complaining about how I express my fear or shock.

Oh, my God, like, they could LITERALLY say like, anything else, like, I dunno, literally, like, "Look Out!" or, I dunno, like, "Jump!" I mean, like, literally, those people need to find, like, literally something else to say, instead of like, the same thing over and over. Literally, dude! It's just so annoying!!!

People don't understand how slowly big ships change course. If the captain makes one small error in judgement the repercussions can very often be catastrophic.

Just to pile on to all the narration errors others have pointed out . . . 14 minute mark: that boat didn't overestimate its speed, it underestimated it.

One major thing you left out about the massive cruise ships that go to Venice is that they’re so big that they literally “shake” the parts of the city that are near the port

I cant believe #1 wasnt the freighter MV Summit Venture that on May 9th, 1980 ran into the Sunshine Skyway bridge in Florida, destroying one span causing six cars, a truck, and a Greyhound bus to plummet 150 ft (46 m) into Tampa Bay, resulting in 35 deaths.

These ships look so graceful until they run into something then you see power and toughness needed to move them. What you mean no one was on the boat the sinabung crashed into. You can clearly see the guy moving.
