@DrIncompetent But it's not hard to see the difference between the two, but I'm still shocked how many fail to see the difference. So I do appreciate you, actually doing listing befitting of the title.
Having grown up on Moria, Boss and Omega, I love that Roguelikes are still being played by so many people. Moria was actually one of the first games on a computer I ever played. With every key used as some sort of keybind, I learned to use the keyboard almost entirely from playing Moria. I was so addicted to it, I even snuck a copy onto my school library's computer, and had to break through the parental lock to do it. lol
@@DrIncompetent Moria was one of the first, but if you want something a little more interesting, I'd go for Boss (syfy elements and... a job...), or Omega which has a little bit of just about everything (way before it's time).
@@DrIncompetent I wrote on the JH reddit that I wish the dev would make a spiritual successor to DiabloRL like he did with DoomRL, and he replied it's something that might actually happen in the future :D
@@raglanroadworkscheck out Path of Achra. I’m not gonna pretend to know the developer’s inspirations (I think it’s just one guy), but I can see a clear Diablo-influence in the gameplay loop. There’s a free demo on steam.
Thank you for your efforts once again! Although I know and have extensively played pretty much all of the games you present, it's still quite interesting to listen to your opinion about them, what makes them stand out for you. And it's nice to see people having a similar taste and passion for this kind of niche stuff!
Haha, thanks my friend ;) Yeah, this is a lot of staples for those new to roguelikes that just have to be mentioned at least in this first video here but I hope some of the lesser known indie games might pique your interest ;) If you've played and enjoyed all of these like I have then it is truly awesome that we have such similar and (amazing haha) taste ;)
You got me hooked on the RL's and happy this popped up on suggested today. Added at least half a dozen new games to my list of games to play. Great vid as always!
Great video Doc, I appreciate how you not only listed your choice roguelikes, but also briefly described what made them special and enjoyable for you (and potentially other viewers interested in the genre). 🙂
Thank you! I am so glad you found this video to be fun and informative ;) I want to make more like this when I have time--this was kind of an experiment ;)
@@DrIncompetent Indeed that would be interesting, maybe worth making for the other game genres you play! (though I'm _personally_ just here for the roguelikes 😅)
I remember when Tales of maj'Eyal was Tales of Middle Earth, a hugely expanded variant of Angband. I appreciated the desire to add more narrative and quest-driven feel, but I preferred the vanilla.
Interesting! I wish I could go back and see it at that stage, before what I can only assume was some kind of copyright mess that caused them to be, at least slightly, less on the nose about the LotR stuff ;)
Cool to give Zorbus and Doors of Trithius some exposure. Fantastic efforts by both devs. Doors is currently the closest to my ideal RL, where you have to purchase supplies and plan ahead before going on adventure. I'm crossing my fingers for a caravan system. It's really getting along well and the dev regularly updates.
Thanks for great list👍 I absolutely fell in love with Caves of Qud. It's so amazingly good that I cannot stop playing it. Thanks to you I finally got into cataclysm and well that's my second favourite for now. Btw. meanwhile a Moonring comes out and it's really beautiful and free roguelike.
Great list! Thanks for a couple new roguelikes to check out. Hopefully Quasimorph will be on your 2024 list.. awesome title if you haven't found it yet.
The first traditional roguelikes that I really felt I was grasping the game and actually having fun were Tales of Maj'Eyal, Golden Krone Hotel and Wazhack. I'm here cause I really want to get into the genre, I tried DCSS, CoQ, ADOM and stuff before (and I still do from time to time!) but I always feel like they're too hard for me to grasp. I just know someday it'll click, I love the concept and it just feels so interesting, but it's still an effort for me to feel like I'm actually enjoying the games and not just struggling to understand them. Well, time to try again!
I feel you! Some of these roguelikes are really dense and unforgiving. I do have guides on the channel for DCSS, CoQ, and ADOM, so maybe those will help a bit! ;D
@@DrIncompetent thanks for answering bro! Didn't know your channel until now but you're really one of a kind, just subscribed. I'll make sure check your guides, hope I can learn them too!
Oh, I forgot to suggest a game! How about "Jupiter Hell"? Is the spiritual successor of DOOMRL (which I also recommend), that is to say, a Roguelike mostly focused on ranged weapons inside space complexes.
Thank you for the list! I can add one more game I found recently - Lost Flame. It has very unique and interesting mechanics: skill based weapons (where different types of weapons have different skill sets) and telegraph enemy attacks (where you can see area of enemy attack and evade it, so need to learn how enemies attack)
Haha, hello Gordon! Good to hear from you :D Yeah, I was trying to be comprehensive with the list and include some hidden gems but also point out the classics for newcomers to the genre ;) I need to play some more ADOM so I can pick your brain about it haha--I have a lot to learn there ;)
CDDA is my first true traditional roguelike, i downloaded the game many times and deleted it after i give up. I don't remember how but one day i decided to seriously learn the game and oh man oh man... It's the second'ish BEST GAME i ever played (I have so much memories with gmod so i can't decide)
oh you're very clever, great way to hook me to all your old vids, I already added them all to my playlist and I said my fare wells to my family, I will be judgy so expect comment, very clever (ps judgy is not a word)
Thanks for this video list. This is a new genre for me so I'm very curious, I think the closest thing I've played would be crypt of the necrodancer (rhythm based tile movement), or maybe the original xcom from 1994, so I'm really looking forward to trying a few of these games out
thank you for the list... as a token of my appreciation, i'll give you my list of my favorites.. 1.Elona Plus 2.gearhead(mecha roguelike) 3. lost labyrinth(I recommend the old version) 4.Shiren series
I love Caves of Qud, and to a lesser extent Tales of Maj'Eyal. If you want a distilled fast Roguelike game, Path of Achra is hard to beat. I am curious to see how Dwarf Fortress adventure mode shapes up. I own Wayward, but haven't really put any time into it.
I have some videos on Path of Achra on the channel--it is a super fun game! I think I played it first after I made this list but it's a great recommendation, thank you for sharing it!
You know that was an oversite by me for sure--there were others I couldn't fit in. So there will need to be another list! Stay tuned ;) But in the meantime, everyone--check out Alchemist--it is a fantastic game ;) Get the game HERE: spellsweaver.itch.io/alchemist Full Alchemist Playlist HERE: ru-vid.com/group/PLLZqXZAwfuGeRwBAh8VkpS_K1IjjErixC
@@DrIncompetent eh, don't worry about that. It would be arrogant of me to insist I should be there with the likes of DCSS. Though if you do decide to include it somewhere, I am, of course, very thankful.

Great selection of games, with the most important features discussed for each one. Apparently you can't cover much in one video, so I think at least one sequel with more roguelikes is justified. Finally someone is talking about roguelikes and he actually knows what a roguelike is. This is rare nowadays. The norm is people talking about "roguelikes" without knowing anything about the genre. I'm tired of watching videos showcasing crappy bullet hell games thinking they are roguelikes while they actually aren't even roguelites. Sadly, it's hard to find a video like this one nowadays...
That's a great idea! I should do some followup videos that showcase more roguelikes! There are so many good ones haha ;D I know what you mean--Hades is a masterpiece but it's a roguelite, not a roguelike haha
@@DrIncompetentApparently you can't showcase them all, not even the "good" ones. That would be impossible even with a very short description of each one. But yes, I think at least a followup is justified. After all, NetHack is missing in the first video... HERESY! 😆
Thank you! :D I have to say I've never played Warhammer Quest, but looking at it on Steam--it looks like the old Hero Quest but more involved and with Warhammer? It looks great! If it is random each time, and death is permanent, then it certainly could be considered a roguelike! I should play it first before I say that with real confidence but it does look good ;D
That's a great question! I have had that game recommended a ton by viewers and from what I understand it is, but I haven't played it yet! I need to try it haha ;)
I would agree with all your selections with the exception of stoneshard. I have this as one of the shitest rougue likes of all time! I strongly disagree. Do further research on thus one before you waste your hard earned money on this game. Its a sad thing that you recomend this.
