That’s not a common cause of significant head injury. Not to mention highly variable. That specific occurrence isn’t a high mark parameter. It was “acceptable”, not “good”.

I agree, how can you give an acceptable rating when the rear passenger’s head hits the back glass and the shoulder belt cuts into the neck. Did you get a bribe to come up with that result? Also, the Tundra got a better rating than the Fords or Chevy even though the shoulder belt cut into the neck as well. It seems as though your ratings are biased to favor the foreign automakers. I expected better from a government agency but these ratings are total bs, imo!

Sometimes I question who rates these. A jeep that contained less damage in cab was poor but hitting your head on the back window is acceptable….

Side airbag never deployed in that test. It also rolled in the small overlap test.

The criteria is documented clearly and available on line. There’s very little subjectivity in the rating. There are payoffs for best car awards, not for this.

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is super safe. Since it's always, ALWAYS in the shop due to 'electrical issues' you don't ever crash... Assuming you don't crash why the electrical issues are happening at 75 MPH. DO NOT but a GM vehicle they absolutely do not care if you're vehicle has spent more time in the shop than being driven... They will fight you tooth and nail rather than taking even the least amount of actions to make the issues right.

Our last 3 GM products were lemons. GM treated us like crap. Our Buick 3.1 v6 started knocking at 25,000 km. GM said it’s not an issue and talked to us like we were dirt. That engine blew at 96,000km! Last straw! There will never be another GM in our yard.

I slammed my 07 Duramax crew into the rear axles of a semi tractor trailer that crossed in front of me, both of us traveling at higher speeds than these test videos. My work truck cab was full of tools, parts and inventory, but I only shattered my right leg/ ankle/ foot and broke my wrists ( don’t try to keep holding the steering wheel ). It was hard on internal organs as well, but I still look the same as before the crash, not too ravishing. At least the dash cam was working, but replaying that is horrifying and not the best therapy. What these tests don’t indicate is the PTSD that comes from being crushed inside for 2 1/5 hours or so while they saw, pry, and pull your truck apart with log chains. After a few years, I still can’t climb radio towers, I hate the tiny man lifts in grain elevators, and I have to sleep with a small light on like some little kid. Pathetic. Drive safe, don’t try to work 20 or 40 hours straight, and let the crash dummies take all the damage. P.S.: When you vacate your life for a second (seems much longer), not all of you may return, and bad things can hitch a rough ride back with you. Non of the surgeries or meds will fix that, since I don’t belong here anymore. Maybe I never did.

For those that are confused about the Rivian test: It is not the damage to the outside of the vehicle that determines the rating, but rather the damage to the inside of the can and the passengers. In fact, unusually a more damaged the outside is better. Vehicles are made with “crumple zones” on the outside. These zones are specifically made to be crushed during an impact. When the vehicle impacts a surface, it undergoes a collision and a transfer of momentum. As seen in the Impulse Momentum Therom (Ft=mv), a collision that takes place over a longer period of time will result in less force being applied to the object in the collision. In context, a vehicle that crumples more and for longer on the outside will reduce the force applied to the cab and the passengers in the cab. The goal of auto manufacturers is to reduce the amount of force delivered to the passengers on the INSIDE. They don’t care about the outside of the vehicle. Force inside the cab is what splits your skull open. Hope this makes some sense, i’m not exactly a physics teacher. 😁 The one where the dudes head smacked the window was definitely not safe though lol.

Ok back in 2019 IHS did the same test on 1/2 trucks. My Ram had an overall rating of good, now for the 2023 ram model are rated poor. The 5th generation hasn't changed, so why a poor rating this year ???

Same thing with the new tundra last year was one of the best overall tested and scores. 🤷🏻‍♂️ now bately pass... The rivian 2 test seemed awfull against cabin structur and scored good.... 😅

Why not show the same test for every truck? Seems the Rivian had a cherry picked test here with no rear passenger while the others did. If you are going to do a comparison like this,, show the SAME tests for ALL the trucks in the lineup. Also, why are these tests showing different ratings than the same ones from just a couple years ago? Example, the Ram 1500 didn't change, but now it has a poor rating on the overlap?

That’s very true, it’s a very scary possibility that is not being talked about. However, gasoline is equally as scary if the tank gets ruptured. Vehicle fires are not as common as RU-vid makes them out to be.

I got into an accident with my 2022 Chevy ZR2 Colorado and it folded like a tin can. It was completely totalled and the kicker... the airbags never went off. I have since switched to Ram

Considering the overall performance for rear passengers is poor, why not fit a B-Post airbag that can deploy to cushion rear passengers for upper body impact protection in forward movement? Ive been involved in the automotive industry for 30 years, and this would not be a hard technology, or expensive to implement!

because that was the "original moderate overlap" test, not the updated one. All original ones didn't have a rear dummy, because they weren't testing for rear passengers, the updated one tests for rear passengers.

I really wonder how they rate vehicles on this tests. There are way to much inconsistencies in here like the Gladiator (yeah, we all know It lacks on the air bags, but it performed amazingly) and the rivian for example which took damage almost into the cab in the front crash and still gor a good rating while the other trucks managed to stop the damage much earlier (causing less risk into the cabin) and got Acceptable at most. This sounds like government driven tests to promote electic vehicles over fuel operated ones.

I heard several years back that it was to help clear the windshield after an impact so if the vehicle is still moving and the driver still is capable of steering, they can see where they are going IF possible depending on the accident. I believe it’s also one of the reasons the front air bags need to deflate as quickly as possible. Don’t quote me on that as that may be incorrect info I heard.

Damage is subjective. In a perfect crash, the vehicle absorbs all the energy and the occupants receive very little. A perfect outcome. Time to get a new ride though.

to anyone wondering why the rivian had no rear seat dummy, i think its because they did the rivian test a year ago, and only now they are testing rear seat. the rivian is a hard to find truck, which is why they couldnt test it again here. just my opinion ]

Every evaluation that ends up with a poor rating should mean that the manufacturer should have to redesign their vehicle to be safer. I can get a ticket for not driving with my seatbelt on, but these major manufacturers can sell me a vehicle that will still hurt me badly even with the seatbelt on? Makes no sense

it's not a legal requirement for manufacturers to make a safe car. They improve safety for their sales, because better safety sells more than poor safety.

The seat belt prevents you being launched through the windshield or thrown around the vehicle. The manufacturers are forced to fit them by law, same thing for the occupants.

From watching this and surprisingly seeing every truck for the most part on the poor side I’m assuming the weight and size is its strong and weak point. Not only do the crumple zones have to take the grunt of the impact but also the force from the weight behind the impact.

Bottom line: I was impressed with the Jeep, thought it would fold up like a cardboard box. And I will take a full framed truck over a uni-body any day. How they can rate a Maverick as better than a Silverado torks me up!

Except for the part where they weren’t tested the same as all the others with a passenger in the back flopping around and breaking their neck. Bet all the others get much higher ratings without the data of the back passenger negatively impacting (phrasing) their score.

@@jefffalks1519 No one gets a “pass”. The rear child side dummy is a new addition to the test (added last summer I think?), so the Rivian must’ve been tested before that. Indeed, when there’s a new test or new component to a test, most vehicles struggle to get it right until the engineers have time to engineer specifically for that test. Still a remarkable engineering performance by Rivian to get the highest rating for a pickup in its first outing.

The Cybertruck hasn’t been tested yet. The video that Tesla released was a different test, conducted internally by Tesla. We don’t yet know how the CT will do in the front offset test.

All the trucks tested had the 34 year old and outdated Gloomy Grey, Charcoal Grey or Boring Black interior colors that became popular in the last Millennium. Yep they’re all NEW except the interior designers are just as depressed as they were in 1990.

It’s a proven fact that when the economy is shaky, there’s wars and rumors of wars, there’s civil unrest people desire dark, gloomy, drab colors, but when the world is at peace, the economy is stable and there’s civil rest, people enjoy bright cheerful colors. Seattle, Washington is a prime example. The skies are normally gray. Most houses, businesses, vehicles are gray and gloomy. The interiors of vehicles are dark gray or black. The interiors and motif colors are gray. Seattle is the suicide capital of the USA. Gray is everywhere in and around Seattle. My wife and I are very optimistic and tend to be happy with life . After 34 years of gloomy, drab, depressing, outdated, boring gray, charcoal gray and black automobile interiors have been shoved down everyone’s throats by every automaker since the last millennium and we are sick and tired of it. What happened to classy upbeat, happy colors? Why be like everyone else? What happened to everyone’s individuality?

I think these tests could be a little misleading. I would find it more useful if they were testing in more realistic conditions. These test are at low speed with stationary objects. I think it would be more if the test was with 2 vehicles traveling at the same seed that crashed into each other. How often are people crashing into stationary objects vs other vehicles? Lets see some real tests.

2 and a half year ago I was T-boned in my tacoma at 60 + according to the police report I rolled 4 times and landed upside down 2 broken ribs and a Punctured lung 4 broken vertebrae and a broken hip but I survived the state trooper said if I had been in anything else I would not have survived

The only truck to get good ratings was the rivian. Small overlap, 40% offset frontal and side impact. 2/3 of collisions are front end collisions. The object most likely to kill you in a crash is a tree. 80% of fatalities are single vehicle crashes.
