Hi K. Scholl. Thank you for these informative video. I did received my unemployment claims starting April. Does it mean I cannot write off expenses for my apartment rental and car expenses? Thank you.
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@Sorcierre Immortelle - I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you self employed? Did you generate any income through your business or self employment gig/job? You are not able to write off your expenses (apartment) if they are merely for living...has to be business related. You’ll have to pay taxes on your unemployment income, but are not able to write off business expenses to lower unemployment...business expenses would lower your business taxable income. Does that make sense or am I confusing you more?

From what I’ve learned some of the more successful / profitable entrepreneurs in your line of work focus on both the tax returns for companies/individuals as well as the recurring monthly/quarterly revenue from helping business owners manage their books/accounting. Helps your revenue be less seasonal I suppose. Truthfully, they were a gift from a buddy of mine and I don’t know where he bought them, but I suspect from Amazon. I used them when people would walk into my office with questions and I’d flip the 5-minute guy over and say, “I’m happy to help & chat for 5 minutes then I need to get back to work.” Worked every time. ...time management is clutch. @Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
Tracy - Excellent point! I just read that as part of the new stimulus bill that was passed. I believe this is intended to help stimulate more people to dine in restaurants because the 100% is only for “food or beverages provided by a restaurant.” Appreciate you for bringing this to my attention. Thank you! 👍🏻👍🏻
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@C L - Thanks for taking a moment to watch the video - appreciate you for that! It is my understanding that dine-in & takeout is fine...examples you mentioned should be allowed. Meaning, if you're having a 'business meal' with a client or prospective client and you "get take out" and eat it on a bench in a nearby park, then that would be considered a business meal. What matters (in my opinion) isn't necessarily dine-in OR take out, but rather the nature of the "business meeting" to make sure it is a legitimate business meal and not just you/people writing off their everyday lunch purchase. Does that help give you a little more clarity?

@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@SahuriPlays - If you’re using the storage unit as a means to operate your business then that would absolutely be a cost of doing business and a write off for sure. Best course of action would be to rent it in the name of your business, yes. If you want some other tips check out the self employment taxes & tips vid...I go into having a business P&L in that one. Thank you for sharing this video! First video I've seen of your channel. Definitely subscribing! Question... I have a sole proprietorship business cleaning commercially (no employees & not married) and I also have a part time W2 job but my W2 job doesn't offer any healthcare. So as of right now I don't have any Healthcare. Would I still be able to deduct my healthcare with my self employed business? #10: Can you claim 10 sick days normally or is this avaliable just because of covid? Would you recommend any books to read to better understand taxes, deductions, for small business owners/self employed etc? I do plan on starting another business in the health/wellness space. Where would you recommend someone to go for a financial advisor/business advisor or something along those lines? Thank you so much for your time.
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 2 года назад
@Grounded & Aligned - Lots of questions...will try one at a time... - Yes, I do believe you can still deduct your health insurance premiums against your self employment income - please confirm this with a CPA. - I am not sure if the sick day tax credit will be normal moving forward each year or if it was just because of Covid...I believe it is just for Covid because the FFCRA was passed in March of 2020. - Books - I do not know of any books for you to read regarding the topics you mentioned above. Googling stuff, reading info online, reviewing IRS website, and most importantly - talking with your CPA would be my best suggestions. - In my opinion, you don't need a Financial Advisor to help you with opening up a new business...I think finding a mentor that is further along in their life/business/career than yourself would be a better option. Seek someone out in your area and approach them for coffee/breakfast and ask if you can just pick their brain...that would be a great place to start because you'll get some 'real world' type of responses that you won't find online or in a book. Hey, thanks for checking out this video and the channel...really do appreciate you. Cheers boss lady! Excited for you and the endeavors you're on...awesome!

My wife and I love all your videos! She is a teacher, and I am an entrepreneur ..any tips on a Insurance plan with HSA for self employed ?
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@luis rivera - Oh wow! Thanks so much for watching...happy to hear there’s a few good financial nuggets of information for you to scoop up. 😃 I’ll be real with you, my wife and I have been blessed to always have group health insurance plans and I haven’t ever had to research individual health insurance policies...so I’m not as well versed on that topic as I am with others. From what I’ve researched / been told / heard about from other people...the monthly pricing and coverage aren’t that good for an individual health policy compared to group policies. That said though, if you’re dialed in on getting a high deductible plan then your premiums shouldn’t be too outrageous and you’ll be able to contribute to an HSA (as you already know - clearly). A simple Google search would be where I would start and dive into links/reviews/comments from there. If any other folks read this thread and would like to comment and help out Mr. Rivera that’d be great!

Keep asking around your inner circle or other business owners that you know personally to see who you might be able to get introduced to that comes highly recommended.

Great content. The only part that was misleading was the LLC vs. S-Corp tax breakdown. You didn’t add back the W-2 wages that get taxed from what you pay yourself from the S-Corp. the figures will be a lot closer.

As a landlord, my rental income is shown on Schedule E. It is not considered "earned income", and as such, cannot be used for a tax-deferred "deductible" IRA.
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@Jim Ross - Thank you for watching the video, Jim! Appreciate you taking the time to do that. Yes, you are correct in your remark, but instead of being able to deduct that income in the form of a tax-deferred qualified retirement account contribution you have other deductible items at your disposal such as depreciation, operating expenses, & repair costs...and depending on how you take your vehicle accounting...the mileage driving to/from your properties...so you're looking good there. You seem to have a good grip on things, but I'm happy to help if you have any questions. Appreciate you! Cheers!

Thank you for the detailed information! I am a bit confused looking at the IRS and website regarding the sick leave. Does this apply to contractors without a business? My husband was out of work for more than 10 days but as a contractor, he doesn’t have a “regular” rate of pay.
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 2 года назад
@Yesi Ibarra - Yes, it still applies to your husband even if he doesn’t have a “business” name…he’ll just use his real name as the company name and his personal social instead of a company EIN. I go over how to calculate the “regular pay” in the video…it’s basically the same number from his Schedule C that he files along with his tax return. Good tips. I do have one question. In your LLC vs S-Corp example how is the QBI deduction reported to offset self employment tax? Isn't this an above the line Federal tax deduction not an SE tax deduction?

Simple informative vid as always. Question on the LLC vs S-Corp comparison. For the LLC, does the 15.3% Employment Tax get applied before or after the QBI deduction is taken? The example in the video shows it as after the QBI deduction is applied. I know that is the case for Federal Income Tax, but was not sure about Employment Tax. Thanks!

Yeah, I believe I goofed up on that part of the video...your QBI deduction does lower your Federal Income Taxes by lowering your AGI (Form 1040 Line 13 for 2020), but it does not lower the calculation for SE Tax. I apologize about that inaccuracy. Thanks for commenting on that...appreciate you. Cheers!

@Alex Bradley - My pleasure boss! Glad this one was helpful and hope some of the other vids on the channel are helpful as well. Sounds like you’re a W-2….you may like the HSA vs Core health plan vids. 🤷🏼‍♂️ …or perhaps the Roth 401k vs 401k stuff. Regarding your question, I’ve got bad news for you big hoss….you’re not able to write off employer reimbursed meals. If your employer gives you money then you’re not allowed to spend it yourself on meals and call that a “business related expense” and write it off. You can spend it on meals…no problem…just can’t write it off. To that note, many of the deductions/write-offs mentioned throughout videos on my channel are for folks that have 1099 revenue, are Sole Proprietors, or have an S-Corp or business they run of some kind. Thumbnail for this vid says “Self Employed” on it intentionally. If you have any other side hustle income that you are able to generate outside of your W-2 earned wages then many of these videos regarding tax deductions and such would apply to that revenue, but not your W-2 income. I dislike being the guy to deliver bad news and hope you don’t hate me for it 😬, but had to mention that. Hit me up if you have more questions…theme of many of the vids is…I love tax credits/deductions and love anything Roth-related. 😂 Oh, and you don’t need a Financial Advisor to become wealthy. Lol. Anyway, appreciate you taking the time to check out the video. Cheers, boss!

Schedule C, line 15 does specifically mention “insurance (other than health)”...but it would actually be a deduction that would show up on your 1040 page one...which is from your Schedule 1-part 2-line 16...your royalties would be noted on line 5 of your Schedule 1. @Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 2 года назад
@Rene Jacques - So, my initial reaction is 'no' because the room you're referring to is not 100% used for it's intended business purpose. From previous conversations with multiple CPA's, it is my understanding that this is one of the more complex write-offs to legitimize due to the area also being able to be used for normal living & not 100% dedicated for work/business. If we are taking business/client meetings on Zoom calls while working from home while eating lunch at desk... is that where the 50% deduction kicks in?
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness Год назад
Regarding the home office deduction, it is my current understanding that the area has to be 100% dedicated to work. Meaning, if you’ve simply converted a dining room table into an office with a laptop on it…then I don’t think that counts because you can simply move the laptop and eat dinner. However, if it is something more permanent/fixed then I think you’d be ok (like a dedicated work office perhaps). If you’re referring to meals, then it can’t be alone by yourself, eating at home. It must be a “business related” I believe in order for the meal to have a chance at being a legitimate deduction. Thanks for checking out the vid!

I fix generators and landscape equipment but do not have a business and get paid in cash I am going to file using my social security only. Can I use these write off even if I technically do not have a business name? or business. I get recommended by word of mouth and use my personal credit card to buy my materials. Can I write off my materials even if I use my personal credit card?
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@Alan Rubio - Hey Alan! Yes, you can...however...you can only write-off what you report. So if you are getting paid via cash and are not reporting that cash as income then there is no proof of income and thus not able to write off the revenue you generate for your business. In your situation I would strongly encourage you to have a business P&L statement and divide your revenue between cash & the other forms of payment you receive - then you'll have correlating bank deposits associated with each week/project you complete. Short answer though is yes, you can still take advantage of these write-offs...in the eyes of the IRS you are simply a "sole proprietor" and are self-employed. As your revenues grow and your business becomes more complex (office, employees, additional insurances, larger revenues, etc) then you'll want to consider creating a formal business and all the other things associated with doing that. For now, you're good boss...just keep watching/reading/researching and you'll find answers. If I have an S Corporation and I pay myself with dividends (no payroll and no quarterly filings). Do I qualify to have a SEP or must I be a W2 employee of my S Corp?
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@Pete Juliano - It’s my understanding that you need at least $600 of compensation in order to qualify for SEP eligibility & paying yourself through K-1 distributions (dividends) is not compensation - it’s considered a distribution of ownership (not wages)...so based on that knowledge I’d say no you don’t qualify for a SEP. furthermore, I’m not a CPA, but I’m not confident that it is wise to file as an S-Corp and not pay yourself a “reasonable salary” and encourage you to seek a professional CPA in your area because this sounds like a potential flag to get audited (which isn’t fun)...you’re basically avoiding paying SE tax on a salary to only pay federal taxes on your K-1 Distributions...be careful there. Best practices I’ve seen/heard/read is to pay yourself a reasonable salary (depending on your industry) THEN take the remainder as K-1. Please look into that and let me know if I’m mistaken. Appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to watch this video...thanks boss! Happy to help if I can. Cheers!

@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
There are two definitions to be considered a HCE....the IRS defines a highly compensated employee as someone who meets either of the two following criteria... #1 - Owned more than 5% of the interest in a business at any time during the year or the preceding year, regardless of how much compensation that person earned or received...OR... #2 - Received compensation from the business of more than $130,000 in the preceding year and, if the employer so chooses, was in the top 20% of employees when ranked by compensation . ...the 2nd one is more likely to define most people as a highly compensated employee. @Liz DoggyFitness - Hey Liz! Thanks for taking the time to invest in yourself by learning & watching this video. Hope there are a few others within my content library that are also of interest to you. Please feel welcome to double check with a CPA, but the way I understand it you do have to pay the full 15.3% (payroll taxes) on the salary, but the K-1 distribution (profit from your business) that you will pay yourself is not subjected to the full 15.3%...which is why many like this tax structure...because you can pay yourself a 'reasonable' salary and then avoid paying more taxes by paying yourself the rest via K-1. Hope that helps! Congrats on all your success and hard work...I am sure it isn't easy at times. Keep it up!!!
@Gen-wo6ir
@Gen-wo6ir 2 года назад
@@Financial_Awareness Thank you for that!! So I just want to recheck with the equation you had provided. $150k in an llc will get the 20% deduction = $30k. So 15.3% taxed on the remaining $120k $150k in a s corp will get the 20% deduction, less the salary you pay yourself of $50k, so $20k. So 15.3% is taxed on the remaining $80k But you also had to pay yours and the business’s half of the taxes so it would still be 15.3% on the 50k salary for yourself. So you’d really end up paying that tax on $130k total when you add them together right? Just paying the 50k taxes more upfront and the rest later on

Do you have experience with deducting a portion of identity theft protection services? We pay about $13 a month for 2 adults' monitoring, so if my husband as sole proprietor is considered by himself, would we take 25% of $13 times the months he was self-employed in 2020? Probably not worth it, but I have been doggedly pursuing an answer on this because I remembered when companies began starting to write it off for employees. I didn't know if that would still apply to us as sole proprietors. Just being clear, NOT filing S corp or LLC.
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@Jeffrey Holliman, Jr. - Hello Jeffrey's wife! lol. So, my wife and I have LifeLock (love it...it's saved us on multiple occasions)...and I do not write if off against the self employment income that I generate because the service that we use is for our personal use and not business use. If you were using identity theft for business accounts (which I haven't even looked into if that is even a thing...I'll have to research that), then I would say it is a deductible business expense - if it is for the business and paid for from a business checking account. However, as you mentioned, it would be such a small deduction it probably won't move the needle too much. GREAT that you're thinking this way and researching your options...so keep doing that! But yeah, I doubt it is something you can write off. Hope that is helpful. @Useful Posts - Keep track of all your tutoring sessions, track your income, track your gifts, yes you report it (the earned income - not the gifts below $15,000), yes you can deduct those work-related business expenses, yes you simply add it all up and subtract out your expenses. It isn’t terribly difficult to do, but I believe you can do it…watching videos like this one, others from my channel, and other ones from YT are super helpful….but in my opinion if you do all that to grow your knowledge base THEN go find and speak with a CPA…then you’ll end up being super knowledgeable and prepared to have a productive conversation with a CPA rather than just listening and nodding your head while saying “can you just do it” to the CPA. @Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 2 года назад
@R J - I would get a 2nd opinion from another CPA to confirm what you've already been told. From my understanding the home office space deduction is a very challenging deduction to successfully claim for some due to a normal 'home office space' also being able to be used for other needs than just for your business. As a contrast, I film my videos in a small office space in my primary residence...which is the ONLY use for that space. However, I edit my videos all throughout my home from my iPhone, but am unable to deduct the space where I edit because all those other chairs/tables/sofas can be used for other personal use as well. Bottom line, a CPA would be the better person to ask this question and it seems like getting a 2nd opinion might be a good use of time...if for nothing else than to just confirm what the first tax preparer already told you. @Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 2 года назад
@Tony Nameless - Such a cool hobby! If you’re not including that income on your tax return then I don’t think you can claim the COGS (cost of good sold) on your tax return. However, if you decide to make this hobby a small, self employed business and start tracking all your expenses and income (via a profit and loss statement likely) and you’ll actually begin to pay taxes on the money earned then in that case…yes I think you should write off the… - equipment you buy. - the mileage it takes you to drive to/from said places where you find said used equipment…same with selling the equipment…even if it is just driving to the UPS/FedEx store to ship it…track those miles! - any meals that are business related to this side hobby - are there other people you discuss or do this with? Do you ever have a meal where you specifically map out your plans for this hobby for the upcoming week/month? Do you ever take a potential customer out to breakfast/lunch? - the supplies required to make the repairs. - do you sell over the internet? Do you need a computer/phone/internet connect to market and sell your repaired equipment?…sounds like a write off to me. - etc. My CPA has advised me not to take losses multiple years in a row in fear of a potential audit…so we avoid red flags. For example, in 2020 I invested a lot of time/money into this channel…so I showed a loss, but I got monetized in 2021 and so even after taking some business related deductions I showed a profit. Hope all that helps! Keep it up man! Cheers

If you were paying quarterly and still owing more at year end when filing your annual tax return then you simply did not pay enough in quarterly estimated taxes and then prob spent the difference which is why you had to owe at year end. If you list out all the deduction examples I just named in a previous reply I would bet you’d actually show a loss and would owe no taxes. No, what I was simply trying to communicate was to encourage you to find legitimate “business expenses” that will offset your $651 of earnings so that you won’t have to pay any tax on $651 of gross income for that side hustle revenue.

@@Financial_Awareness im just using free version of turbo tax, if i put my expenses, i need to upgrade to 120 dollars plan.. so ill just want to pay the tax in that 651 earning. so ill put 0 right.?? Btw, 651 earning, just 50 dollars Gas expense. so its ok not to upgrade in 120 dollars turbo tax plan.

I'm contributing to my daughter 529 I'm self employed but her mother aslo have a 529 for our daughter 529 . Can I claim what I'm contributing or only one can claim 529 for our child even though we file separate taxes? Thank u
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness Год назад
529 contributions are not tax deductible, so I’m confused by your question. However, if you’re referring to an ex spouse and you sharing the costs from like a divorce/alimony/cost sharing perspective then yes count it…but again from a tax perspective you cannot deduct 529 contributions unless you live in a state with state income taxes and contribute to their plan for a state income tax deduction…just not federal income tax deduction.

@soori nc - Hi there! Thanks for taking the time to check out this video and invest in yourself by learning. Keep up that attitude / behavior up and you’ll compound your knowledge growth over time. Well done! I have no affiliation with Vanguard, but love their low cost etf’s and last I checked their 401k platform was relatively well priced (from an operating maintenance fee perspective). Yes, IMO, I believe it is worth it. Not sure what your income is, but 401k’s have no income limitation for setting up your 401k with a Roth provision…which is nice. Alternatively, it might be easier to set up through the payroll company you contract with to run your payroll (I know you said you’ll do it, but just offering that up as an idea). If you have no employees now then it’ll be a solo / individual 401k…which will change once you add employees. You could also check out Fidelity’s 401k pricing / offering. Let me know if that doesn’t help answer your question or if I misunderstood you. Seems like you’re off to a great start and on a good path. Sweet! I appreciate you! 👍🏻👍🏻

@Financial_Awareness 2 года назад
@Caroline Much - Hey Caroline! I have waited to reply to your comment until I had the time to re-watch the video regarding the question you have. Here are a couple thoughts from me... #1 - within the first minute of this video I encourage folks to watch this video...THEN go speak with a CPA to get more knowledge about your specific situation. I also mention speaking with a CPA multiple times throughout this video and others of mine as well. Although I do feel confident speaking about taxes, deductions, investments, and self employed business owner topics...the fact still remains that I am not a licensed CPA. #2 - the $80k profits ARE taxed for State & Federal income taxes. In the video I was simply discussing the difference of the 15.3% SE tax between LLC & S-Corp...paying Federal Taxes on the remaining amounts left over is an assumed action and is the same action that needs to be taken in either scenario...so I was simply highlighting the difference regarding the 15.3% SE Tax. Hope that clears up your question because if you re-watch the video you'll notice when I discuss the LLC & QBI info before the S-corp example, I also do not mention Federal/State taxes...because it is assumed in the comparison that those taxes are still due. Again, I was simply highlighting the difference in SE tax. #3 - kudos to you for investing in yourself by watching this video and many others I imagine to further your knowledge about taxes and personal finance. I applaud your efforts to learn more about these topics and hope there was a financial nugget or two that you've gained from watching my content library. Appreciate you...thanks! Cheers boss lady!

@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 2 года назад
@Final Plays - You cannot count expenses & mileage. So if you’re taking mileage deduction business expense then how much you spend on gas doesn’t matter…because you’re taking mileage. If you’re deciding to deduct actual expenses, then mileage doesn’t matter at all and you’ll want to keep track of all your expenses. In either case, these will be a deduction against your business revenue…which in turn lowers your taxable income.

IRS says "Your self-employment tax cannot be lowered by claiming the QBI deduction. This is due to the QBI deduction not reducing your self-employed income that is reported on your Schedule SE. The QBI deduction is a subtraction to your taxable income that is reported on your 1040 form." But your video says it can.
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 2 года назад
@Susan Kapusta - Hey Susan, thanks for checking out this video and the channel...appreciate you making the time. Yes, you are correct, I believe a while back when I filmed this video I mistakenly confused the QBI deduction with the SE tax. I do make an effort to confirm the material before filming, but I believe this one slipped through the cracks. Thank you for holding me accountable and sharing your comment. Moving forward I will try not to make such errors.

I'm a self employed 100% disabled military veteran who owns cryptocurrency. Am I tax exempt from paying taxes on my cryptocurrency?
@Financial_Awareness
@Financial_Awareness 3 года назад
@you'llfloat2 pennywise - First off, appreciate the sacrifices you've made to help provide the blanket of freedom we all are grateful for - so thank you. Being 100% disabled has certain challenges that come with it and I'm super pumped to see you watching RU-vid videos and learning about personal finances and crypto....just want to pat you on the back and encourage you to continue watching and learning. If you compound those efforts over time you will become a smarter and smarter investor with a rock solid financial plan. Keep it up, boss! In short, no, you are not tax exempt and you will need to pay taxes on crypto profits. I am aware of some of the benefits provided to our military that is 100% disabled and am aware that your tax situation is different/unique compared to others...meaning...I'm aware you do not owe taxes on your monthly disability checks...and you have no property tax bill. That said though, if your taxable income (Single fliers) is $40k or less then your long term cap gains is 0%....and short term cap gains will fluctuate based on your taxable income for that year, but the min is 10%. Therefore, if I were you, assuming you have "taxable income" under $40k....I would hold onto your crypto for at least one year and then consider unloading some of it (if you feel that is a good investment decision for you) so that you can realize some of your gains in as a tax efficient manner as possible...just a thought. Here are two links to websites I read before responding to you... www.magnifymoney.com/blog/investing/bitcoin-taxes/ turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/tax-payments/tax-tips-for-bitcoin-and-virtual-currency/L1ZOgU00q ...Hope that helps!
