I think the video might be better named as the similar traits that both ADHD & Autism people have because it didn’t really address how someone who has both would present. I get that you might not be able to answer that but it might be cool to do a collab with someone who has both and someone who has only ADHD to do a comparison. Either way great job🎉

I'd like to see that comparison as well as I feel like both conditions work against each other. Eg; needing structure and routine but when it comes to implementing that routine easily being derailed by time blindness, zoning out and becoming totally absorbed in something else or procrastinating and not being able to focus on what I'm supposed to be doing because my thoughts are elsewhere.

I completely agree. This video does a good job of discussing the similarities of ASD and ADHD, but I would be very interested to hear more exploration of how the two work together and against each other in the same person. I experience all of the points he mentioned, but I feel like it is the differences between the two diagnoses that make the experience of having both more unique than discussing either diagnosis separately.

I feel like my ADHD hyperfixations and autistic special interests sort of merge into a merry-go-round of fixated special interests that I rotate out intermittently. 😅 Things that I've been interested in my entire life that I'll focus on and then put to the side to focus on something else or something different, but never fully dropping the interest. It just sort of goes dormant until my interest in it is re-ignited. And occasionally new things will get added to the merry-go-round.

For me the biggest thing with being an AuDHDer is the conflict between special interests and the inability to focus. Talk about two things that don’t work well together! 😅 The autism wants me to focus on a special interest…the adhd wants me…sorry, red squirrel 🐿️, to jump around like crazy. And then the maddest thing happens…I start reading or watching something and what feels like two minutes later and it’s actually hours and hours. If only I could command this hyperfocus! …And then adhd brain kicks in and I totally lose interest in the thing and can’t get started with it anymore… A mad life 😂

What you describe kinda just sounds like ADHD, not to dismiss your experience. I say this as someone diagnosed with ADHD a while ago who’s gone down a big rabbit hole of realising how much I identify with a lot of autistic traits, getting referred for potential diagnosis and now second guessing myself a whole lot. I dunno. I think terms around neurodiversity may change a bit in the coming years.

I think you listed off some issues that people with either condition can have, but you didn't mention any of the things that are relevant only when you actually have BOTH. As an example, the social thing. I feel deeply uncomfortable in social interactions, especially with groups of people, etc. However, I'm so impulsive that I often just... Forget? And jump into those conversations anyway and accidentally dominate them and I'm super loud and then when I get back home I'm extremely drain because my autistic side was in the backseat the whole time scared shitless about not being able to control the situation. 😅

Actually all of those are kinda terrible. Because you're focusing on the overlapping symptoms so they can only tell you that you can have ADHD "OR" Autism not "AND". Figuring out I was AuDHD was more about figuring out the non overlapping symptoms like, needing predictibility as part of autism but needing novelty as part of ADHD. Or struggling to focus even on things that I'm deeply engaged with. Difficulty resting or chilling without doing anything is clearly ADHD, but needing clear established rules is clearly autism. Stuff like that are much more useful. The overlapping symptoms don't discriminate anything, you'd have them either way. It's like, if I was trying to figure out if there are blue marbles, red marbles or both in a bag. If I shake the bag I can hear the marbles, I know blue marbles make that sound, I know red marbles make that sound so I can be sure there are marbles (for the analogy : That I'm not neurotypical) but it doesn't help me figure out what specific marbles are in the back (Autism, ADHD or both), so I need to find tests that discriminate between the different marble types. Assuming I can't open the bag, maybe I know that only red marbles create small craters on their surface because of what they're composed of letting air bubbles explode, so I can feel through the bag and if I feel a marble with a crater then I can be confident there are red marbles because it's a property that's exclusive to them. And if I want to prove that there are blue marbles I'll need to find a similar property exclusive to blue marbles (maybe they crack below a certain temperature, I dunno that's just an analogy I'm not a marble expert xD). So ideally if you want to figure out if you're AuDHD it's on those non overlapping symptoms you need to focus!

having both feels like having two separate entities in your head that totally sabotage each other 24/7 :D I must say I have so much respect for you, Orion. I work in multinational company and yesterday I actually attended a zoom call with Diversity team, and we spoke about neurodiversity (finally!). I was one of the panelists and I spoke about my experiences as a neurodivergent employee, and it was SO HARD.. i got so many feedbacks and words of support after that, thanking me for bringing up the topic, but I never imagined it would be so hard to openly talk about it. Maybe it's the decades of being convinced that "you are normal but weird, don't make big theory about it, just try being more open!"..
@yokoayumi1872
@yokoayumi1872 Год назад
Sounds about right with the two entities, only your inside head voice tho. It the conflicting feelings and thoughts all the time. For my experience my example is how I can zip through 4 books in a snap but at times I can only get 3 pages in which is so painful because I love harry potter but just cant seem to find the motivation to read it. Or having zoomies for like 5 minutes🏃‍♀️ yet being a slushy for the most of the weeks🫠. Your brain racing a 500mph but being unable to get the washing up done but you can build on sims for 12 hours straight, forget the basics.. like breathing, food, water🥲 and on the flipside you have no energy but then turn into a magical cleaning fairly in the night and tidy the whole house, most days struggle to find it in you to get up. you want to do something but can't get it done. How one task somehow becomes 16 tasks. You want to say something but spend so long thinking about how to word it, express it, body language ect that by the time you're ready you've been in you head so long the topics changed and now it's not a topic you can relate to, have knowledge of or interest in, then they ask you a question out of nowhere and PANIK. Decision making is super hard yet also can be really stubborn and adamant. Having to dice potatoes but you peel them too without realisingtill youre halfway through. Just thinking about it all is tiring and frustrating 😫😅 I'm so glad this topic came up at your job. Hopefully your experience has been noted and accommodation are made.

These are shared traits and not traits of someone with both. A more accurate trait would be something like being to bored in your house because very thing is the same but not wanting to go out because of sensory overload. Here are my symptoms. I feel like I can focus if the thing doesn’t really require really any mental effort; I basically have brain fog and like zero mental clarity. The big idea tho is that I CANT THINK at all. My mind basically blanks. This also affects my speech. I have trouble communicating to people (it’s like my brain doesn’t know what to say) and this has hurt my relationship with friends and family. I only have rambling thoughts when I’m trying to fall asleep; sometimes my feet are restless. I’m constantly fiddling with my hands and hair twirling, but you will never see me tapping my fingers or legs so idk if that still falls under “fidgeting”. I will occasionally shift my body while seated so nothing too noticeable. When waiting in line, I’m constantly re directing my gaze so i don’t appear awkward, is this considered being impatient? have a very poor working memory; I constantly misplace things and can’t recall information. For example, I’ll learn information at school and then maybe like 2 weeks later, I will have completely forgotten the material. I won’t be able to recall anything I just learned which is extremely frustrating. This of course affects my decision making. I can’t problem solve. I do struggle with a little bit of impulsivity. Instant gratification and procrastination. I turned in a essay 1 week overdue because I couldn’t pull myself to even start it. Thinking of words to type and organizing seems so boring and it takes me much longer than everyone else to complete it like everything else. I struggle with instruction unless there is visual aid. It’s like when they’re trying to explain something, idk what the hell they’re talking about and thus, get lost in their words. I try desperately to understand and I’ll act like I’m following along so I don’t appear like I’m not listening. Could this be some form of processing disorder or is it that I just can’t Concentrate?? I want to be social I really do, but there’s this mental block. I avoid things like presenting in class, participation, expressing opinions, etc. I am going to see my pediatrician so I will let y’all know what happens. ty 🙏

Hi and thanks for making the time to do this video. As someone who's 44. Spent the first 40 ish years not knowing I was different, just having to learn and cope and fight without even realising other people didn't! Then spent the last 4 years having found there is an autism spectrum, and thinking yeah that mostly sounds like me. To then just a week ish ago finding out that ADHD even closer sounds like me and deciding I must have ADHD. And now just tonight finding out you can have both at the same time. I'm gobsmacked. It's now 5 hours past my sleep time, so that's another day down the pan tomorrow. I have to know more about having both. And I want to watch a video on what it's like to have both, or how having both compares to having either one. So I can see if having both, which I now suspect is right, is an even better fit for me than just one or the other. I'll subscribe now. Let me know if you do such a video in the future. Thanks

Now, that said, I definitely believe I have severe ADHD, but a lot of the things I've learned about autism that apply to me 100% aren't encompassed in the ADHD bubble. As a child, I was just seen as a problem that needed to be solved. (not by my parents. They were honestly trying to help me, from a place of love, but they really had no idea how to help, so they relied on the advice of professionals) I was medicated out of existence. When Ritalin was no longer super effective, they tried all sorts of drugs on me. I was one of the first people in the world to try Prozac and Welbutrin. Autism wasn't really "a thing" when I was young, unless you were rain man, or non-verbal, and I'm what some would call a "high functioning" autistic person. (don't get me started on "functioning" labels. I could rant for hours about how harmful they are) I am a highly intelligent person with a well above average IQ, and I have a very large vocabulary, and I'm very communicative. I'm also VERY good at masking. At a very young age, I learned what behaviors to hide or suppress to not be ostracized. (still got ostracized, but, yeah) I don't "present" as autistic to most people. The few people I've mentioned it to IRL have either disbelieved me, and dismissed my claims, or given me "that look." My partner has been extremely supportive, and she's learning as much as she can about autism and how it affects me, and is very accepting and loving. She's my "someone to talk to" when I have no one else. I'm rambling.... Sorry. It's one of my things. Anyway, yes, I can identify with being misdiagnosed. Society likes to slap a label on people then put them away in a drawer so they don't have to learn to understand others who may not be like them. I've heard many, many, many stories of women in particular being misdiagnosed, specifically with BPD. I'm fairly certain my partner is also on the spectrum, but has been "officially" diagnosed with BPD. I'm sorry for the challenged your misdiagnosis has caused you. You have my utmost sympathy. ♾️

Had to rewind a few times caus I zoned out without noticing.... Like in the first min 😂 #ADHD Thanks for cutting this video up it helps a lot! Also I felt watched when you said ''moves feet and vingers''... I was doing that at the time LOL Also i have light sensitivity but i never mentioned it to anyone. I always wear a cap outside and also in the office for years (they said they could not fix the light for me since others were bothered by the dark..) So i had my pc screen on a darker lightmode and my cap on during office hours 😳 if i didnt do that I get a heavy headache and my eyes hurt. O and i wanted to ask something about anoying sounds that trigger me. I am not sure if this is something others deal with but I get very aggresive (internally) when i hear someone chew gum (or chews loudly). I actually will passive aggresivly move to another side of the room or transportation vehicle. Also have this with arabic music (some kind of pitch in the song) and I physically wanna cringe and just get the hell out of there (think about a cafe that plays the music on the background). I really feel bad afterwards becaus its my issue but its really overwhelming I cant rationalise in that moment at al.. Maybe its just me caus I havent heard anyone else about it... hahha anyway I hope to hear your thoughts!

Thanks I'm eagerly awaiting my ASD assessment (on a waiting list) and I'm burnt out at the moment been for more than half a year. I know I'm autistic even though I'm not sure if I'm autistic enough for the medical diagnosis, I definitely think I am. Not the point, this overlap between ADHD and autism and the overlap between Dyslexia and ADHD (I officially are dyslexic) makes it hard to see if I just especially in an for me extreme exhaustive time and recovery. It's really hard to see might I also be a bit ADHD and my more calm analytical days I land on the overlap gives me a false positive and more stressed or anxious days I'm gonna catch them all. And the solution are that I will wait for my assessment, give myself time to see what feels true after I had time to get used to official label and the support that might give me and of course recover from my burnout. The thing that makes me suspicious are that I relate to AuDHDers and tips from ADHD friendly techniques. What makes me less likely are what made me feel like Autism fits. When an ADHD person describes there inner thought process, (obviously not the part of being neurodivergent in a neurotypical society) I don't relate as much. When they describe their day, routine and workarounds I do relate. With Autism when someone describes their daily routine, I don't relate. When the talk about thoughts, experiences and communication I do relate so much. So I relate to neurodivergent struggles, Autistic inner experiences and neurodivergent friendly tips works well for me... when I go oh that might help me with this and no that would just stress me out or I already have a working system for this.

I think we have about the same profile: I relate to ADHD (well ADD actually but...), and autism when it comes to social struggles or specific interests, not so much for routines. Yet, I've been diagnosed with ADD and ASD about a month ago. But I can't help but thinking a different doctor could have made a different diagnosis.

On some days I think they are both part of the same spectrum, merely on different axis. Exponentially increasing variety... I wish we knew more of both developmental brain scans, and comparisons between them. But, if we had that much information, we would of necessity need to compare the scans of persons clearly diagnosed with only one of the two conditions. If we wanted to find differences!

As several others have pointed out, this is more a listing of overlapping symptoms rather than having both diagnosis. Examples of living with both ADHD and autism: - You get easily overstimulated, but when you accommodate for your autism who likes routines and stability; your ADHD says HEY, THIS IS BORING! LET'S HAVE CHANGE! And if you accommodate for the ADHD side and change things up everyday, your autism side screams for stability. - You have the urge to be a perfectionist and do things slowly and detailed (autism), but at the same time you don't have patience for that (ADHD) - Your ADHD would love to attend a big party, while your autism gets overwhelmed just by the thought and wants to stay at home with a few friends. ..and the list goes on. Even though they are similar in some ways, they have to be accommodated in opposite ways, which make them quite difficult to live with.

some times I have something I really want to say and no one will give you break to say what you want so you just blurt it out instead. Also I'll have to watch that people wont get bored when i'm talking alot and realize that they aren't interested or getting bored and have to stop talking so they can say something. I can have hour long conversations, with people i meet online, they freind me, next day/many days later, I"ll completely forget about talking to them and what about, and sometimes it takes a specific trigger for me usually visual or what we talked about for me to remember and if its been to long I have no memory. Also if someone says a lot of steps for me to do, often times i'll forget the later steps or only remember the last steps they told me, and when I simplify the instructions, so I can create a memory aid, the other person, adds back in the complicated instructions like i'm stupid, so I forget anyways, instead of letting me simplify the instructions then at each step the simple instruction lets me remember the complicated instructions for that step.

I have an ADHD diagnosis and I feel like my biggest problem isn't that I don't pay attention to *anything*, it's that I pay attention to *everything*. For instance, I can't tune out a song or ambient noise the way other people can so I end up with song lyrics stuck in my head instead of what I was trying to pay attention to when the song was playing. I work in a restaurant so this happens a lot, especially with songs I hate. I get distracted by multiple conversations around me and end up putting them together in my head so I forget who said what. I also get overstimulated when things are too loud, too close or too bright but no one else seems to be bothered by them. Am I alone in this? Is this more an autistic thing or can it go with both conditions? Awesome video, and I can listen to this guy talk for hours.

I have ADHD, and suspect I have autism, but I do have a tendency to interrupt, but it's because I will literally forget what I was going to say, and have a need to say it while it's fresh in my head. I don't do it to irritate, monopolize or be rude to the other person talking, but to give my thought process about a situation in that moment, and hopefully to get the other person to understand my intentions or where I'm coming from, and to acknowledge what they are saying. I've also found that long conversations are difficult, because I will forget what's been said after a while, and I have a tendency to zone out accidentally. Idk if that makes sense?😅
