ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist, and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

This was such a great checklist! I definitely have more work to do this year. But I have had one win - I had found that I was switching to electronic entertainment partly because I didn't want to "get out any more mess" because there was so much clutter. Last night I spontaneously got out an art project I've been avoiding since the Christmas of 2022, and I look forward to working on it again! Home makes you feel stressed? - Most rooms. Misplace or lose items often? - My phone 😂 (it is much better when my room is picked up, though!) Stress or binge eating - Not much, though stress scrolling? Definitely struggle with that. Takes a long time to clean - Yes Avoiding inviting friends? - Working on that. (It is a big stressor for my Mom.) Owning things I haven't used in years? - Yes (and more of them than I need) Decision fatigue? - Improving! Oozing drawers and closet - I've almost conquered this one! They close... just not all the way comfortably 😂

My uncle taught middle school art for many years. He found if each child had their own 64 color crayon box it was harder for them to do a project compared to a child that had two colors. The two color kids were more creative and freer with what they attempted than the others who had to make more decisions.

I could relate to most of what you said, but then I spent three years decluttering, with the goal of minimalism. Once I got there things felt a bit bare so I added back a handful of items ( 2 plants, and a couple decorative bowls) and it now feels homey and comfy without feeling stark. I feel so free with all the excess gone. =)

That’s fantastic! I think it’s 100% OK to add things back in if it doesn’t feel cozy. A lot of people confuse minimalism with deprivation, but I think it’s the opposite - comfort and alignment!

@@AtoZenLife I wanted to add that although it wasn't because you wanted to, I liked that your family was able to move in 6 hours. My goal when I started decluttering was to have things so tidy and minimal that I could pack my whole place in a day. I think I am pretty close to that goal, but it would take more like a weekend. i think it's close enough. The basic idea was to never again have a move like every single move in my adult life has been, which is chaos. I wanted to be able to get a small Uhaul and just take one load of stuff and call it done, and I am definitely there. =)

If your car is essentially a storage unit on 4 wheels, you have too much stuff. If your home has the same smell as the Salvation Army store, you have too much stuff. If your cat prefers to drag things outside instead of dragging things in from the outside, you have too much stuff.

We ended up in a massive villa due to our “stuff”. And we stay outskirts so we can afford it. Aaah! My husband travels 2 hours a day just to stay here. Our only feels bored despite tonnes off toys as not many people stay here and me overwhelmed all the time with all the stuff and work. Realisation started. I’m happy I came to know that things and stuff can never make us happpy orelse I wouldn’t have changed. RU-vid esp your videos helped a lot. I gradually devluttered in an year’s time. Now we are planning to move inton concur now that house that avoids travel, a house half the size of our current house and I am sure it will still be spacious and peaceful. One question to myself helped me to declutter. Is it worth paying rent which is too high and own such house just to keep this stuff. This thought made me discard immediately.Aaaah ! The relief Deep gratitude 🙏 May you have alll the happiness dear. I can resonate with every word of yours. Our family is living a simple and happy life You helped us do that.

This is why I secretly throw away stuff when I am back at home. I don't care if it's rude, or if the things are not mine! If my family is unable to take care of their things and things start to be too much, dirty, rot, etc, everything is getting thorwn away or donated. I have stopped caring about people's feelings on this.

I used to hit all of these points, but I got an opportunity to start over when I moved. I only packed the things i was willing to pay to store because I was going to have to put everything in storage for as much as 30 days. The cost increased as the size of the storage space increased. I also packed only my favorite clothes to use while in my temporary location and learned that I could get by with a lot less clothing.

I've just moved house & am determined to fit my belongings into 5-6 large-ish tubs for my next move (which may be in five months; the new house I'm in is going to be extensively renovated). As an aspiring minimalist who has decluttered well over half her possessions, I was feeling pretty smug watching my former flatmate declutter late last year. Until I moved bag after bag of mixed, disorganised stuff into my new place. My new criteria is, "Do I want this item so badly that I would go to the trouble of moving this again?"

When I start thinking I need new organizers that’s usually a sign the clutter is creeping back in or that I have more than I can manage for the size of my space. We just received new scarves and winter hats for Christmas and I’m torn between finding a new bin to keep them in vs choosing which ones we like best and sharing the extras. I know, the answer is share!

I am a disabled introvert. I live in an apartment complex that was formerly a motel. My studio apartment is essentially a master bedroom with a kitchen counter. Space is limited and precious. I have a mobility scooter and a manual wheelchair taking up valuable space. As much as I would like to have visitors in my home; having them in my bedroom seems too intimate. I welcome any and all of your advice as to how I can create a living space that is comfortable and inviting.

I have taken a adjusted No-buy year this year. I’m not going to beat myself up just because I haven’t been doing a perfect zero in the first week because my goal is to be more aware of my choices and not to mindlessly just buying my feelings out. And my true end goal for 2024 is to finally become a minimalist, with only collections of happiness.

Inviting and cleaning are really the biggest benefits of minimalism. Like yesterday. We decided to go swimming with our kids and wanted to tidy up and do some chores in the afternoon before there was a family gathering in the evening. Then my brother-in-law, his wife and their child asked if they could come in the afternoon and IT WAS NO BIG DEAL. Of course, there was a bit of chaos, we didn’t manage to tidy between the visitors, cooking and bringing the kids to sleep, but I was still comfortable having people at home because we always have room to move and it was a „fresh mess“, because I now am able to tidy „on the go“ and no mess hangs around for more than a few days. I love the spontaneity it gave us.

I have been considering making the leap into minimalism for a long time now, but I guess I'm scared to do it! I want to get started and truly let go of things, but I get a bit overwhelmed with the "what ifs" of it all! "What if I miss this after I let it go? What if I need this someday?" etc. I really desire that peace that comes with less clutter and less emotional baggage due to having way too much stuff that isn't enriching my life, but getting started is really difficult for me! I have so enjoyed your channel, and every time I watch your videos it encourages me to make steps in the right direction for a better life.

I find all your tips valid, but would love to hear your opinion on people living in small flats. My husband and I live in a 50 square meter flat in Berlin. You lived in Berlin yourself, so I am sure you are aware of rent prices and availability of affordable flats here. Yes, our flat feels cluttered. Yes, drawers overflow with clothes. I keep telling myself it is because this flat is just too small for all the things I need and often find myself having problems to implement tips because I need a minimum amount of items and also use most of them.

I suspect you have inadequate storing solutions/furniture and too many things. I live with my husband in 25 square meters. I am not a minimalist. We have hundreds of books, art and art supplies, extra towels, linen, special clothes for my hobby, a quilt in the making, extra pots and cups, plants... and we still have empty shelves and space to move around. An ikea bed with storage and utilizing bertical space were great solutions for us.

Another long comment. I'm so sorry haha. Oh man, I feel so stressed out when I go to my parents' house and in-laws' house. I wish I could declutter their homes for them...At least my parents have me clean their house for them every week, but it is frustrating they won't let me get rid of a lot of their stuff (once in a while they let me organize a thing here and there but they put it back within a few months because they are those types that like to SEE all their things and know where everything is somehow with it all messy). They keep so much on their counters. I told my mom recently, "Remember when you were really poor in the 1980s and had no clutter at all? It looked so much better before you worked full time..." I love seeing all these old photos of you and your family. I digitized all of my photos and have them backed up in a few places), but I am one of those who loves seeing photo albums and scrapbooks. They are "organized memories" I suppose. You look a bit like your mom, though like yourself too

I do tend to have a cluttered living , and sometimes bedroom. But i m not in debt! However i am an emotional eater with a slightly caotic and cluttered kitchen... And i would never have to clean / dust 4 to 15 figurines in a book case since im a genuine reader. I actually only have books in my book cases....

And now that we have a baby in our lives…I feel I can’t breathe in our small rented apartment. We received so much stuff and we Also bought quite some stuff …we mostly use them though…Can’t wait to have more time to declutter my space because it’s depressing me…Half of our living room is my husband’s remote office and half of it is filled with baby entertainment (bouncing chair, baby gym etc that I don’t have storage space to put away)
@MyFocusVaries

I first started minimizing decor when we had our son. Adding all his accessories (so much brightly coloured plastic!) made our apartment feel claustrophobic--particularly because I was in the apartment all the time. I got rid of tables full of decor and framed photos in favour of a super saucer, etc. Over the years I've kept the trend going, and now I have only a small set of floating shelves with serving ware as decor. No end tables, no bookshelves with decor, no console table. Instead I have a few pieces of art on the walls. It's so much easier to clean and it's visually so much more open. When your family or friends offer to help with the baby, take them up on their offer, and get their help decluttering! They can get boxes for you, help you pack, make decisions, deliver donations and clean while you nap. Hopefully you live somewhere with decent mat leave and can take a year to do the job, because you should mostly be napping for the first few months.

I totally feel you! We have a house buts it’s small. The first year of my child’s life I was also a completely sleep deprived zombie, so the task of figuring out how to place things was not a priority. Now expecting the second one, and the house is sooo much better. Had time to think hard about space functionality and got rid of unnecessary clutter and furniture. I also kept things that fold away easy (like jolly jumper or quick foldable playpen). The playpen also doubles as a bassinet. We change diapers anywhere with a portable change pad. That eliminates a change table. Don’t get too discouraged, it will pass! At some point you’ll have more sleep in you and will be able to figure it out! I also went minimal with the toys. Congrats on your baby 😊❤

Yes to a lot of these... Does anyone have any good advice for decluttering/organizing when your partner is awfully messy? Sadly we don't really share the same view on tidiness and cleanliness. I feel constantly overwhelmed with the state of our apartment but he doesn't seem to care. I already talked to him about it several times but it didn't change anything. So if anyone has some suggestions...
@MyFocusVaries
@MyFocusVaries 4 месяца назад
What's worked in our house is I've gotten rid of items under my control, which is most of the house. If you have less stuff, cleaning is way easier. (Less laundry, fewer dishes, fewer decor items to move when you dust) Decluttering is the key. Then don't buy more things to replace items you've decluttered. Then create a chores and cleaning checklist and divide it up. If he doesn't clean, get him cooking?
@simplycorinne

I struggle with the same! My husband has had so many sports related concussions that the part of his brain that helps with organization is damaged. Pay attention to things he's not using. Go around with a box and load things up. Then bring him the box and ask him if there is anything in the box he feels he needs to pull out to KEEP (key word keep, because the hope is most of it is left in the box to donate). Sometimes people need to have things in front of them in one place to make decisions. You may have to encourage a lot of the decluttering. My husband won't go through things unless I ask him about specifics. Sometimes it's even item by item. It's exhausting in the front, but once you get through it with him less stuff= less to deal with. I've also found that giving my husband a dedicated closet/room/space for a lot of his stuff, I'm less stressed because it's somewhat contained and I'll shut the door. Also, be strategic where things are placed in your house. If clothes end up on the floor in the bathroom, put a basket where they usually end up. Make it crazy simple in stratigizing storage solutions. 1 step solutions- no lids, no covers, nothing that requires other things to be moved. When storage has to be shuffled around that's usually when it fails.

I agree with the other suggestions. My husband is also not on the Journey, however, He also doesn't buy stuff, but keeps his old accumulations. Since I am stressed out by clutter I took the following steps: 1. Decluttering my stuff and most of the generic kitchen utensils I thought useless. He never noticed in the last year... This also included my books, but I only gave those of mine away of which I knew He would never be interested in. I kept the rest and Had space to arrange them more nicely. 2. I wanted the living room and kitchen area decluttered and calm since those are the spaces I am spending my time in. He wants his old stuff there too partly, but it all is tiny and looks so random and not nice that I decided to get a three-tiered tray and arrange most of it on there. And that worked great: He believes his stuff has a very special place and I can accept it now that it is contained and forms an entity. And with the rest of the space I do as I like. 3. Most of the bigger stuff that was around everywhere I told him I was concerned for the dust and everyrhing to ruin it (Trust my, I was Not concerned at all) and we could agree on putting it into nice boxes. He even got rid of some stuff in the process. But I suppose it is Harder when your spouse brings in new stuff constantly

i love your videos + what you do. you are inspiring by modelling an achievable, practical approach to decluttering + minimalism. i was just a bit surprised about the "usual" cost of almost 300$ for the course you're offering, since you are also promoting frugal living at the same time... could you explain the reasons for that, maybe?
@AtoZenLife
@AtoZenLife 4 месяца назад
That's a great question! I've seen other decluttering courses go for upwards of $500-$700, so I think this course is still incredibly affordable for the amount of value that is packed into it. I would also say that, for me, being frugal isn't about NOT spending money at all, but rather spending money on things that add value to my life. So as a passionate course-taker myself, I know the life-changing power of courses and that this one has a lot to offer! Plus, I would also point out that between the $350 worth of bonuses, which include budgeting/minimalism printables and a mini-course on how to sell clutter, this course could easily pay for itself within a month or two -- not to mention the money saved with the intentional shopping practices and reduced need for extra storage spaces. Hope this clarifies things for you. 🙏

@@knizia_klimperbein sure thing! I actually just had a woman in the private Facebook group that came with this course share that she’s already made $280 off of a few things that she sold on eBay since taking this course, so the course has more than paid for itself already! Cheers and take care. 👍

I watch this video, and for half of these signs, my reaction is "Yes, that's true for me, BUT..." I'm living in my grandma's basement with two kids, no kitchen, no dressers, and only two small closets. I've been trying to reduce our possessions down, but it's a simple fact that we're living in too small of a space. Of course our clothes are spilling out of the closet- we have three people's entire wardrobe sharing a single closet. Of course our pots and pans are spilling out of the cabinets- we have only two cabinets and two drawers for all of our kitchenware. Of course I can't save money, I'm unemployed. A lot of the things regarding emotional eating, weight gain, and trouble making decisions are happening because I'm new to being a single mom. I feel like these might be a good measure for people who live in a large enough space and aren't going through tough times. But for folks like me, a lot of this has nothing to do with owning too much stuff.

Actually we have almost nothing, considering we are a family of tree . My son had his 7th birthday party yesterday, it was a house party with just a few kids and parents (we live in two bedroom apartment ) . Usually we can deep clean our home for less than hour . But this was a NIGHTMARE 😭 (legos , toys everywhere, cake on the walls and doors , juice spills and the apartment is all white ) . I know they are kids but this seems to happen even when we are all adults I guess because we don't have much space. The thing is that the mess is so overwhelming to me , it makes me don't like having guests at all 😭
