3:42 uhhhhhh im 5'4 too and get a *lot* of dysphoria around my height and not being seen as "masculine". Just FYI I want to point out plenty of cis men are this height and it shouldn't stop anyone from passing or being perceived as feminine. not trying to be offensive, loves ur videos and stuff I just think society shouldn't gender height

Another sign from my own experience: fixating on gender norms, especially as a child, and either trying very hard to uphold them or trying very hard to break them. For example, when I was a kid, I decided that pink was my favorite color because I was a girl and it was a girliest color, therefore it *should* be my favorite. I still have conflicted feelings over the color because it's hard to tell if I ever truly liked it, or if it became part of my identity as an expression of femininity that I tried so hard to fit into. And also, I dont know if its just a me thing: but also if all your romantic partners/closest friends are all trans/enby, and you have a fixation on the trans/enby experience you just cant explain. I personally have never seriously dated a cis person, and not even through any consious decisions. Not only that, but I feel an instant draw towards anyone gender non-conforming to the point where my trans radar never fails, because I will just walk into a room and if there is a trans person there at all, my brain will already be fixated on them, and how cool and awesome they look/are.

OH MY GOD- I- i feel exactly the same towards the colour pink, it used to be my "favourite colour", and it was for a long time, but then i started questioning if it really was my fav colour, just to end up figuring out that it wasnt and i felt like actually scared to tell my family that my actual favourite colour was green and not pink. i guess since i practically didnt fit at all into the "girl group" at my school i had to *at least* have something to "prove that i was a female" lmao. and, abt the second thing, my only official romantic partner came out as trans, so i guess thats something. edit: also, i just saw your pfp, kris is someone who gives me huge gender envy, lol

For the longest time my two favorite colors have been green and red. And for the longest time I realized they were both gender neutral colors and didn't care. I remember my mom telling me that "green isn't a boy's color" or something like that. And I just recently found out I was non binary.

Number 7 is kind of just my entire obsession with elves, changelings, and robots/cyborgs; like every one of my favorite characters could fall into one or more of these categories. Also it took me forever and a half to realize the wanting to *be* someone rather than wanting to be *with* them. That and several squishes confused me so bad!
@SpaceyAces
@SpaceyAces 2 года назад
Totally! I wish I had elaborated on that even more because nonbinary-ness is so often portrayed through non-human creatures (which is problematic, but true nonetheless), and I oftentimes enbies see themselves reflected in that more than actual human characters.

@@SpaceyAces There's always futures videos! It is an interesting topic. On one hand, I don't mind relating to these characters because they're cool. On the other hand, it gets to the point where I wonder if I'm just less comfortable relating to human characters when there's an "other" I'm more used to liking. It would be nice to see aspects of my identity represented in and originating from a completely human character, for a change.

"You're very aware of your gender expression." Younger me needed to prove my femininty so badly as a "cis" person. I didn't even like women's social customs, I just thought I had to be as girly as possible. Maybe it was just denial?
@SpaceyAces
@SpaceyAces 2 года назад
Maybe! When I say this, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you had queer gender expression. I was hyper feminine as a kid; I wore leotards and tutus with gum boots and, like, 12 different hair accessories every day, loved girly stuff (though I do still do these things…). I just mean that you have some sort of particular relationship with expression. And that could be a negative relationship in your case. But I know that girliness (as an AFAB human) was definitely part of my early relationship with gender expression. Don’t know if this is useful at all. Thanks for commenting!

I'm cis, but when I was younger I definitely seemed "particular" about what I wore. Looking back... I think it had to do with a combination of not liking being told what I was "supposed" to wear and simply the fact that the girls clothes I owned were way less comfortable, so wearing dudes clothes helped my ADHD focus. I can also distinctly remember there being a person at my church when I was little and I could never figure out their gender... I didn't necessarily like or dislike that trait about them, I was just trying to guess and hadn't been exposed to very many queer people😅. However, I can very vividly remember HATING it sooooo much when people misgendered me as someone's little boy with long hair. It just felt so... humiliating. Which I think gave me a bit more understanding and empathy for people who aren't cis, what only had to happen to me probably less than 20 times in my whole life is something trans people who don't look like their gender have to go through on a daily basis. I got to have a small taste of that "nakedness" and feeling of having your sense of self stripped away. It fills you with shame and discomfort. Made me realize people aren't "soft" or "snowflakes" for wanting to be called by the correct pronouns, and they they are a lot more than "just words". At some point in time, I stopped being so picky about clothes. I owe an insanely huge thanks to the help from a neighbor who told my mom to "not worry about it, she'll grow out of it" when she asked if she should be making me dress more femininely. My mom has since had a change of heart, but I guess my neighbor was right because I did eventually, mostly, grow out of it. I'm so glad I was allowed that time of exploration and wasn't forced to wear stuff I hated all the time. So yeah, I think we should normalize cis people thinking about their gender identities because I think it's a lot more complicated and individualized than we make it out to be. Thank you for coming to my 3am Ted talk with no coherency whatsoever Edit: I just gotta say: your hair is SO. COOL. Kinda looks like the aro flag a bit with the black shirt, I love how it's darker on the top and light green underneath it's very mesmerizing 😂

Is agender a thing? Like no gender. I know I'm not a man or a woman but non binary people seem to often affiliate with some sort of gender expression, and that feels very foreign to me. Ive told my friends before that I don't feel like a man, but I don't feel like anything else, so I don't want to call myself nonbinary since non-b's face actual societal issues and I just feel uncomfortable. I think I dress very androgynously, all I wear are sweatshirts and pants. But it seems like lack of gender is seen as masculine our society. Has anyone felt this way?

To point number 5 : I once got misgendered by that one man working in the hotel, where me and my family stayed for 1 week at the vacation. He said that boys in my age need some vacation too from time to time, and my sister was looking at me in confusing, while I was smiling like crazy (but I didn't show it, cuz I haven't come out to my family yet). And to make it more clear I am non-binary.

@The1stPurpleCat 2 года назад
3:26 ~ It’s kinda funny you say that. “You like the idea of being misgendered.” Idk what ‘gender envy’ is, and I don’t believe I experience it. However, there’s just something about girls who are easily mistaken for guys, especially when it’s a plot device in the story. And I have no idea what that even means for my gender. I can’t even describe what emotion I feel when I think of being in their situation. When I wanted to write a story about this girl who goes undercover as a boy to go to an all boys academy, I just loved the idea of hiding it. Irl I definitely don’t like he/him pronouns, but still, the idea of hiding my AGAB and gender sounds... good in a weird way. But, at the same time, I don’t want to be a “guy”. My gender isn’t male, so why would I be interested in that so much? I have things from my childhood that I believe are signs, but I know a lot of people would just say are me being a quirky girl or me being “not like other girls”. I liked pink, but in a defiant way. Like, I liked pink, but not in a girly girl way. I hated the idea of being pegged as a “girly-girl” and was disgusted by the idea. I was completely fine with other people being girly-girls, just not me. I hated the idea of being a girly-girl so much that I considered myself a tomboy, even though I didn’t feel connected to actual tomboys or acting/being masculine. I felt like I didn’t actually fit in the “box” of being a girl. Boys are race cars and action figures. Girls are Barbies and playing house. I was stuffed animals and exploring the backyard for bugs. I never liked the idea of having a sister cause I would be confronted with the fact that I wasn’t.... “fitting” what a girl should be. I was scared I’d be a bad sister for this (“what if”) sister. I’d be a good sibling, but I definitely wouldn’t be a brother... but I don’t think I’d be a ‘sister’ either. I was scared of the thought of a sister cause I didn’t want to confront the idea. Even now, I like dresses hypothetically. Like, wear a dress, look pretty, go to a party: idk if I really care too much. Wear a dress barefoot and run through a beautiful field: yes please! I remember my mom and grandma wanted to get me a dress for Easter when I was 6 or 7. I couldn’t find one I liked, because they were ugly but also because I couldn’t do ‘fun things’ in them. Once I did find one I liked, I told them I liked it... but then I got sad and asked “could I play in puddles with it?” Idk, it just feels very gender to mess around in nature in a dress. I chose my pronouns in 1st grade? Kindergarten? Idk, whatever grade it is when you practice pronouns. The thing is, they taught us pronouns, and we matched she/her to feminine presenting stick figures and he/him to masculine looking stick figures... but no one told me they were supposed to be for specific genders. So I went home and wanted to be nice to my mom, so before she could ask what we learned in school today, I told her we learned pronouns. We talked a little bit, until I randomly said, “I think I like she/her pronouns for myself more then he/him.” I felt like I should inform her cause I wasn’t sure how fem I came off as, so I wanted to clarify just in case. My mom says, “Uhhh... I’d course you’re pronouns are she/her. You’re a girl.” “Oh.” I never felt like I fit in with other girls my age, but I think it was mainly my interests not aligning with theirs. Me being aro-spec and ace-spec also heavily influenced that cause my friends are like “oooo, I have a crush on that person” and I’m like, “wait, you have a crush? I thought that was supposed to happen later?” That’s all I can think of right now. I think I’m genderfluid. I think I experience female, agender, and neutrois fluidly. I’m ok with being AFAB cause I’m normally fem-leaning with gender, but I wish I didn’t look so fem or look so AFAB. Idk. I like she/her and ey/em, but not he/him nor they/them. They/them is ok, but I’d much prefer she/her and ey/em. SPOILERS for Voltron and Oran Host Club: The only two characters I can think of that are a girl, but are mistaken for a boy, are Haruhi from Oran Host Club and Pidge from Voltron.

I'm 26 and have been wondering for a few years if I might be nonbinary. I used to always put ace bandages around my chest in middle school and high school (note: please avoid doing this if possible, it's not safe), so I wondered for a while if I was trans, but that didn't feel right at all. I've been inexplicably allergic to being called a "girl" or "woman" for my whole life. A bunch of other signs led me to realizing I'm queer, which was a good realization, but I still feel... weird. Just not all the way like a human person. I never really let myself consider that I could be nonbinary because I feel most comfortable when there's a distinct feminine element to my appearance. The way I've been phrasing it is that gender doesn't make any sense to me and feels totally reductive, and you could use any pronouns for me and I wouldn't care. But there's something extra sweet about "they" because I feel like "they" treats me as a person, not a piece of meat. For the last few months I've been slowly dipping my toe into using she/they pronouns and it feels so right. Nobody ever they-s me, but just hearing myself say my pronouns are she/they and seeing it in my bios finally feels right. I still wasn't sure about calling myself non-binary until this video but this really confirmed a lot for me that I'd been hesitating around.

Unfortunately I got into a weird conservative phase after a bad breakup and hated the non-binary community, because I thought they were all confused. That way of thinking is kinda toxic in retrospect, but when you’ve tried to repress your gender dysphoria your whole life, your perception of people and their experiences does too. When I was in primary school I used to wear trousers (when most of the other girls would wear skirts) and I would wear big jackets instead of the little grey cardigans that were part of our uniforms. I think my parents picked up on the fact that the typical girl uniform didn't feel authentic for me. I'm so grateful that they were always so supportive when it came to self-expression! Also, interestingly, although I had always had very long hair and was never "misgendered" as a child, there was a point where I suddenly became very concerned that other people would think I was a boy??? I think I said it was because I had a "deep speaking voice" (reminder that I was probably about 7 or 8 at the time!). My mum suggested going to school wearing clear nail varnish so that I would feel more feminine. I've spent a lot of time thinking about this since! Was it that I could tell something was different about me and I was worried everyone would notice so I overcompensated by wanting to be seen as more feminine? Or was it that I felt left out because the girls in the playground seemed to have something I lacked? Or did I genuinely want to be more feminine? I don't know!!

I don’t know how it is with other gender identities but here’s an anecdote from someone identifying as agender: People have told me that they feel they are homo/hetero sexual and this was quite validating,since the way I found out I was lesbian wasn’t “I’m homosexual”,but more of just a standard “I like women”. I didn’t have anything with gender in mind. Also I love how you look!

@@SpaceyAces yeah. But how can you use she/her and be non-binary? I’m not trying to invalidate anyone I’m just wondering
@SpaceyAces
@SpaceyAces 2 года назад
@@graceinfalsettoland1329 Of course! The idea is that pronouns are just pronouns. For some people they may be indicative of their gender, for others they are completely separate or unrelated. They are just words, after all. For example, I use both she/her and he/him pronouns because I like/don’t mind them. They don’t really connect to my gender for the most part. Nonbinary doesn’t look one way, nor does it mean you have to or even should use they/them pronouns. You can if that’s comfy, but pronouns and gender are two different though oftentimes related things. Even cis people can use they/them pronouns if they want to, really. And enbies can use “binary” pronouns (for lack of better descriptor) even if they are associated with their AGAB. I also know that personally, I actually like to mix and match my gender identity, expression, and pronouns (and sometimes my sexuality, but that’s a bit different, haha). So I could be a she/her presenting masc, or a he/him lesbian lookin’ cute in pastels, or a they/them dudechic just chilling, you know? Pronouns are just an add-on to gender at this point. I may have just confused you more, but the point is that pronouns and gender are not interchangeable in any way, and have the ability to make up two separate aspects of your identity. They don’t have to “match.” Because, really, pronouns… are just little itty bitty words.

The mental health struggle aspect is HUGE and can be incredibly hard to nail down, especially if you don't live in a supportive environment. I've had depression basically since puberty hit and only now, a month away from 30 have I finally had the courage to admit to myself that a lot of my issues ultimately stem from gender identity issues. I've toyed with the idea of being trans in my teens, but kinda chickened out and repressed it, cuz the reality of it seemed scary as heck and even that aside it's a huge, huge deal and I 100% wasn't ready for it then. Yeah, repressing these issues DID NOT help at all, in fact the more I repressed the worse I felt about myself and life in general. For a good while I even forgot how excited I was as a teen about this stuff, how nice it felt seeing guys confidently crossdressing or just not giving a shit about not presenting masc, plus all the little closeted experiments I've tried. Now I'm sure I'm at the very least enby, maybe even trans, idk yet, we'll see down the line. At the very least, having accepted this aspect of myself I definitely feel like a heavy ass weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

I am AFAB and up until recently, didn’t give that much thought. Someone once described gender like being able to feel your bones. They don’t feel like anything if everything is fine but if one is broken…. Normally, I just feel ambivalent about my gender and then sometimes I like to wear sexy femme clothes like sheer, lace, bewbs out, etc. but weirdly enough in just a shot of my face in a selfie, especially if I’m wearing makeup oddly enough, I’ll feel a little masc and a sort of get this thrill through me like “I like it” and it feels good. Same when I see myself with a masc filter on an app. I just be like checking myself out. But also femme feels good too. Ahhhgg it’s so confusing and frustrating. I should note I have 80HD. I’ve been tested for autism and I am not but I have sensory issues and social issues like eye contact/cues and special interests. I was a “fun fact” kid. I liked knowing things and telling people the things I knew.

I feel like half of these are also common feelings of most teenagers-regardless of their place on the gender spectrum. I don't say this to invalidate anyone's experience, but to confirm that these are common experiences. Also, as a neurodivergent afab, most of these signs seem more aligned with being on the autism spectrum (specifically the fixation on characters or celebrities and preoccupation with clothing aesthetic and material). Perhaps there's a big overlap on that venn diagram? I do no identify as nb, so I don't have authority here. Just wondering?
@SpaceyAces
@SpaceyAces Год назад
Hi! There is actually an astonishingly large overlap between gender non-conformity/ transness and the autism spectrum (I have a video about it!). It's a correlation that goes both ways; as in, autistic individuals are more likely to be nonbinary/ trans/ GNC, and nonbinary/ trans/ GNC folk are more likely to be autistic. I'm a neurodivergent human myself, and these experiences are drawn from my own, so I can acknowledge that there would be a lot of overlap, haha.

I've been wondering about this for a while. For several years, I have been fighting to get sterilised and due to the diagnose of an illness, this fight has turned a lot more active and even to the extend that I now want to get the whole thing (aka my uterus) removed. But no doctor wants to do it, because I'm too young to make this decision and I'm a woman, so it can't be that I don't want kids and find the thought of something growing inside me utterly repulsive. And a while back, I suddenly had the thought "Am I tho?". Anyways, this is a very odd situation for me because I never really thought about whether I "feel" like my biological gender. I'm not even sure what that's supposed to mean, honestly.

Wanted to say up top for other people in the comments: none of these points match my experience and that's okay! I've been a trans guy for 6ish years now and I'm starting to again look at how my gender might be more expansive or different from what I understand it to be right now. I think my experience with life is a little unusual anyways, and I've never had any of the signs discussed in the video really. So regardless of whether you relate to all of them or none of them, this video cannot tell you whether your trans or not! It's up to you to come to understand how you want to express yourself and to be comfortable with your expression changing throughout your life! You're doing the best you can and it's great, keep pushing through this mess that is life!

Just that I was never a very feminine woman in my mind, my brain feels nerdy and curious and not limited by gender, and I'm not that into fashion and big nails like most women. I do like makeup though. There's a good chance I would dye my hair dark green if I didn't work a very traditional job. Also, I'm demisexual, sapiosexual and demiromantic. For a while I thought I was bi, but I never got to test that theory. I'm gen X and never stopped to think about being a little non-binary. Is "a little non-binary" even a thing?? I'm confused. (TW: mentioning of SA and bullying) I‘m currently having a really hard time figuring very fundamental things about myself out, most of all my gender identity. I‘m assigned female at birth and also enjoy being a woman and being perceived a woman, but I feel like I am more than that, that I‘m partly genderless or that I don’t feel female every single day but rather genderless on some days, so I thought about going by she/they pronouns and settling for the demiwoman gender identity. However I‘m concerned that I‘m subconsciously influenced by trauma (I was bullied during my preteen and early teenage years and sexually assaulted and blackmailed when I was 17/18) which left me feeling unworthy of love and attention and with an incredible amount of hatred against my own appearance. Therefore I’m hesitating to officially use they/them pronouns in addition to she/her because I‘m afraid I‘m only subconsciously feeling that way, wishing to be perceived less "boring" or not being compared to other women as much with the result of feeling better about my appearance. I‘m probably overthinking but it really exhausts me not knowing who I am.

I don't have dysphoria really, I like having male parts and having heterosex.. but i don't really like males. Idk I do kinda like when someone calls me a girl or whatever. But that had been such a problem with other nbs. I think some people take their pronouns way too much.

@SpaceyAces
@SpaceyAces 3 месяца назад
Generally, most people don’t think of gender identity as a choice, per se. Anyone who identifies with a gender that they were not assigned at birth is technically trans; but as a nonbinary person, you can choose whether you identify with being trans or not. There are many nonbinary identities that are not simply “in the middle” or completely cut off from the gender binary; for example, genderfluid people have a shifting sense of gender identity (perhaps something to look into if your feelings change like you’ve described), and demigirls are nonbinary girls, essentially, identifying with some aspect of girlness and femininity, but not entirely. I personally don’t think you can choose to be nonbinary, but you can certainly choose your gender expression, and if you “want” to express your gender in such a way that overrides the gender binary, you may be nonbinary or gender-nonconforming.

So I don’t think I’m non-binary or really anything other than cis girl but I watch these because I’m curious. I could be, I wouldn’t mind if I was, but I don’t think I am. I don’t feel “feminine” exactly, I feel like me and I have never been anything other than female. I am ok being female. I have insecurities about my body but that’s normal. I look very feminine so I never get misgendered to my face but there are some RU-vidrs who say “hey dudes, bros, guys” or gender neutral greetings or greetings other than feminine ones. I don’t *want* to be misgendered, but I do notice it and its pretty much “that’s new. Interesting. Anyways…” I am also thinking I might be aroace, so I seem to feel aesthetic attraction rather than actual attraction and I think androgyny looks cool. By putting everything together in one comment I’m realizing these are several signs of being non-binary. I think my final decision is “if I am, cool” but I am currently happy enough as a girl so I am probably going to continue being a girl.

I know that I'm an enby, it's just funny to see this video to see what fits. And really almost everything did! But the clothing thing was different. When I was a teenager I didn't look at my clothes and wasn't interested in the way I wore them 'cause to me it was just a way not to be naked in front of others, I hadn't much emotional connections to it. But I was (still am) also a weeb. So clothes might get dirty, wore out or destroyed, but manga least for your entire life. For me it was only logical to by manga instead of something I wasn't interested in a few years later, anymore. Today I also look at my style and experiment but my weeb part often gets me, again.

If ur curious about it u can try referring to urself as non binary or using pronouns like they/them, they/she, they/he, etc. If ur not in a safe environment where u can openly do this u can try referring to urself in ur head and see how that makes u feel. Its fine to label urself as something if u really feel like thats who u r at this moment, u may not always identify with being non binary but it doesn’t mean u aren’t now. And just remember that not all enby people experience gender dysphoria. Non binary people also don’t owe anyone androgyny and can dress how they feel comfortable, ur gender expression doesn’t define ur gender identity. Hope this helped

It’s normal when you’re young to not feel like you fit in . Everyone feels that at some point . We should all be happy with our bodies ,you shouldn’t feel pressured to change who you are . Dress however you want , it’s ok .

As a cis person the most obvious thing that told me I was cis was that I didn’t like people confusing me for a boy. Not even when I was a child.
