One thing I learned from Sir David Gilmour about breaks, in an old interview: During some solos, he plays only when breathing out. This assures his playing has rests like a vocal line might. This is something that has helped my playing immensely, as it's something very simple to practice, yet it requires some concentrarion(Which prevents you from overthinking your lines and therefore encourages you to play more intuitively and trust your ears and fingers)
@NewJazz

GREAT input!!! Thanks.
@2ndbleak
@2ndbleak 4 года назад
I think Miles Davis coined this as well in his autobiography; brass players and singers naturally have to make breaks to breathe in so mimicing that with guitar works very well and sounds natural to the ear.

Was a city bus driver in Montréal for 18 years until 1998, piano is my hobby and I really enjoy your classes. I just wish the Internet came earlier for me to learn all this and get way better than I am. People say I have a nice sound, but deep inside I know I'm missing in part the drills you're showing us thru your videos. I became lazy and transpose my keyboard to stay mostly in C, so that's limiting. I now just have to retire from my latest job and start practicing to stay alive! Thank you so much. Donation to follow. Regards, Pierre.

This video is the positive answer to “can I play piano if I only played guitar”. As a former guitar enthusiast not finding in the guitar a nice choice for jazz, I find this video a huge motivator. In guitar (unless you study like a pro) you rarely are aware of theory behind, just “oh this arpegio sounds good over this chord”, “cool I can substitute this chord with this one” and then lookup the shapes in some catalog/app. Thanks for this. Exactly what I needed to get started without a too frustrating learning curve.

This is great stuff, thank you very much! It may seem like an half-an-hour lesson, it actually is a roadmap for a lot of evenings fun with practice. I'm glad you didn't dive into theory about scales and such, since there is already so much great material about it. However, not a lot of lessons help me with a schedule, something I can work to and keep me busy for more than a couple of hours. You have a calm way of explaining and have certainly added excitement to it!

Dear Mr. Prehn, Thank you so much for this video, it is one of the best lessons I have seen on the internet. Everything is explained perfectly, and the playback is absolutely superb. Moreover, you insist on the essential elements, not only in jazz but also in music in general: the silences. Finally, I congratulate you wholeheartedly for your courage, your devotion in spite of the necessity to practice another profession than music. I can guarantee you (but you certainly know it in your heart) that by simply listening to this lesson we understand that in addition to being an excellent teacher you are a magnificent pianist.

This is great! I'm a long time self-taught improviser on the keys, and I found this to be an inspiring video with a lot of great technique all in one place. It also reminds me to leave more space when I solo -- I tend to be too much of a rocker/shredder, and it's good to be reminded to step back and let your playing breathe a bit.

Another winner. I can't say how necessary this lesson was to me, even if i already do all or most of this, analyzing it that way helps gain consciousness, balance things out. When you played all the notes on your five-finger grip (ironically because you were talking at that moment about leaving tones out) I noticed how good it sounded as a chord. I guess it's a Cm7 suspended fourth but that would be a taboo voicing because the one and three is in there, demonstrating that one should always see what happens when guildelines are broken. In this case playing your handgrip together and cluster chords instead of sparse (leave out notes) voicings. The main thing I can apply this to is now having an easier way to go "outside" and back in again, like a map. After over half an hour I still haven't checked or cared that much what the actual progression is except that it's a few bars in (maybe) C minor, and I'm gonna do that right now. It was exactly right for you to avoid that whole aspect of it. Thank you thank you. Very smart lesson
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 5 лет назад
Thanks a lot :) Yes, the grip is actually a great sounding chord. In the next lesson (I hope it will be ready between Christmas and New Year) we actually use the grip in the left hand to play the chords while we improvise with the right hand. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year :)

Grazie a nome di tutti noi, davvero molte grazie! Thanks, Oliver, a great lesson!
