My favorite bird moment was the (Portland game I think) lefty game. He shot the whole game left handed and scored 4o or 5o pts . Someone asked him why did you shoot all left handed shots this game? Are you injured? He said no .. . I'm perfect, we play the Lakers tomorrow night and I want to make sure my wrist wasn't wore out from todays game... Another great one was the 3pt contest... He walks in the locker room and says ok so who is finishing in 2nd place and then doesn't even take off his warm up jacket while killing the competition and winning the 3pt competition. Dude was on a whole different level. I couldn't imagine him in today's NBA he would make guys quit basketball and probably be sued for emotional distress.

It shouldnt be. Bird would be most baluable on court even with 15 points because he would impact with game making space making or picking moments to play and impacting. The stats dont capture that, there should be a weight of critical plays for all stats and then stats on game making apart from just assist

I get so sick of hearing people say that Bird couldn't play today because the players are more athletic. It's true there are more players that are better athletes now. But today's players are not better athletes than the best athletes from previous eras. Who today is a BETTER athlete than Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, a young Dr.J, David Thompson, Bernard King, and the list goes on. Or what big man that has played the game today or yesterday is a better athlete than Wilt Chamberlain? Look how Bird played against many of these guys. When you outsmart and out work someone, you don't have to jump over them or outrun them.

@@berndtherrenvolk1951 my personal opinion on him leaving franchises is what I believe people don’t want to acknowledge and that’s the NBA being watered down for years after adding too many new franchises in the 80s and 90s. Im not trying to take anything away from legends but the bulls 2nd 3 peat and every championship team after that won titles with stacked teams. Yeah the 80s was stacked too but it was even. Many teams had 1 star for years and that created the worst possible situation for stars because that player was good enough to get them to the playoffs each year but never anywhere close to actually winning a title. I mean look at shaq and Kobe. Who else had a two star team when they 3peated and honestly they should of won 6-8 straight. I don’t think lebron is the goat but the things people used against him are the things that would of made him the absolute goat without any debates. His finals losses were mostly expected. If he won his first finals appearance that would of been it. He wouldn’t have need to win 6-7 titles 🤣🤣 if he won the first time against the warriors with kyrie and Kevin being hurt then a legitimate case between him and Jordan would of begun. People would been more satisfied if lebron stayed on one team and wasted prime years and then jumped from team to team to win a title then to do it while being able to dominate because when he does it the way he’s doing it they can’t use any excuses why their favorite player is better. Meat riding has become more important than talking about real basketball.

Every single game without exception he brought you to your feet with some bb play that was just extraordinary. The man was an Artist, a Genius … and I’m not exaggerating. Bird had all the intangibles that don't show up in the Stat Book. His fakes were a thing of beauty. Like you say people just see the same old plays. If you watched him play the games he did so much. One of the Celtics best comebacks being down double diget starting the fourth Bird didn't take a shot but effected the game so the Celtics could win. No other player could do that. He had the greatest court sense and he purly willed many wins and all those clutch shots. Magic Johnson is right. There will never ever be another Larry Bird. People don't get it Stats only tell a fraction of the story. What Bird brought to the court no other player has. He got the whole team involved that's how he beat MJ every single time untill he learned he can't do it himself. very valuable lesson learned. Just a quick note to add that Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5 in DWS. Bird was once 2nd in DRTG and was 6 times in the top 10 in DRTG. In 1983 Bird finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award and Bird was on 3 all defense teams = 2nd team. And as a rookie won the ROY award and was 4th in MVP voting and then in the next 8 years in the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd again. Bird was the best all around player I have ever seen and is a top 5 player ever. People talking about Bird falling out of the top 10 in these modern "lists" is due to people not knowing or looking into Bird's talent and skill.

Skill for skill, and when you add his clutchness and leadership, I think Bird is the best player to have ever played. He's also got the best game film and highlights of probably anyone, including Jordan, whose highlights are often about him just straight jumping over people and dunking. Bird's highlights are wave after wave of perfect shots from crazy angles, faking the hell out of the best defenders, and passing in all phases of the game on an insane level, as good as Magic.

My favorite Bird play is an assist. Game five, 87 Eastern Conference Finals against Detroit. Bird steals the inbound pass with five seconds left, dishes it to DJ who lays it in with one second left to win the game. How he managed to both keep his balance, and stay in bounds, still amazes me. During his rookie year Bird went through a fairly lengthy shooting slump late in the regular season and the writers and fans were freaking out about what was wrong with him. And Bird's response was that he didn't get what the big deal was because in his mind he was still playing well (rebounding, passing, defending) and they were still winning. In the end, he knew his shot would return, but he always saw the game as so much more than that. One of the greatest shooters ever and in the midst of a slump he's not freaking out, but just focusing on playing well in all of the other areas of the game and, above all, winning. What a great player.

The most talented and gifted basketball player to ever play. Born to play one sport and play it better than anyone ever. I've watched a lot of basketball in my life but I can truly say that before Bird the NBA was good but struggling, during Bird, it was phenomena, and after him, it's been a trail of bread crumbs. Sorry but there was nothing like 80's. The only time that NBA ascended to the heights of the NFL. Now it's way down the charts. When you don't have the GOAT anymore, you just don't have much. In 1974 Larry Bird was my P.E assistant when I was in the 8th grade and he was a senior at Springs Valley High School. At the beginning of each P.E. class we always ran 10 warmup laps around the gym. One day, a trampoline was set up on the basketball court and there was Larry Bird bouncing on it. As the whistle blew and we reluctantly lined up to run our laps, our teacher (who was also Larry's basketball coach) blew his whistle, and said "Larry is going to take 10 shots while jumping on the trampoline. If Larry makes any shots, each one made will delete a lap that you must run." Coach threw the ball to Larry and right there in front of me and the entire boys Jr. High P.E. class, Larry proceeded to hit 7 out of 10 shots while bouncing up and down on the trampoline, 35 feet away from the goal. Larry set an incredible example for me as a young boy in French Lick, Indiana that helped me through my entire adult career. If you are willing to work very hard and never give up, your dreams can and will come true. Thank you Larry.

What's my favorite Larry moment? Have to be a whole game. 88 finals against Dominic and Atlanta where The Birdman dropped 60! It was like the Harlem Globetrotters were all rolled into one man. It was the greatest one man show I'd ever imagined could happen. Everytime he touched the ball something supernatural happened! I agree he was the goat killer! Without the back issues he would have played another 8 maybe 10 yrs. My money says MJs championship tally would have been cut by as much as half!

As a kid in the 80s, an employee of MSG told me they saw LB practicing alone during the morning hours, dribbling the ball over every square inch of the court to see where there might be an uneven surface or anomaly he needed to be aware of. This was just one of the small details that would give him an edge over opponents. I heard this before he retired and became the legendary player we know now. This account came from someone from NYC who wasn’t a Boston fan, of course. LB was finding a way to have the home court advantage on the road!

I haven’t watched a basketball game by choice since Bird retired. Magic was already out of the NBA who I enjoyed watching too. Jordan’s style was pure athleticism and not fun to watch. I did see a few games because friends watched as I hung out but without Bird it ceased to be a team sport at the level Magic and Bird could make it.

As far as I'm concerned that Larry Bird was if not the GREATEST PLAYER he was certainly in the top 3 to 5 of ALL TIME. I considered myself fortune to get to see him play in person at the Charlotte, NC COLISEUM off of Tyvola Road years ago. He did pretty good that game, 40 or so points. I kinda forgot it was about 30 years ago. The only other GREAT PLAYER that I got to see even longer ago was PISTOL PETE MARAVICH while he was still in college at the OLD COLISEUM on Independence Blvd. I believe he set a record there that still stands. He was a HELL A PLAYER as well. Poetry in MOTION for BOTH OF THEM. 😉😀😀😀😀

It was weird that Bird shot 40% in threes during his rookie season then suddenly dropped to 20% the next few seasons. I'm not sure where I read this but one of the reasons Bird's 3-point percentage and attempts drastically dropped after his rookie season is because Bill Fitch considered the 3-points to be a bad shot selection. He did not want Bird to shoot threes. KC Jones gave Bird the green light hence increasing his attempts during the 1985 season and thereafter.

One of the Best Players Ever and he gets overlooked by the Younger generation who sees the flashy Dunks and Monster Slams by these outstanding athletes. And yes it looks cool but Larry Bird would out rebound bigger players and out hustled his opponents in every aspect of the Game. And NOBODY ELSE EVEN COMES CLOSE TO HIS OUTSIDE SHOOTING ABILITIES. He could hit the bottom of the net from anywhere on the court. Passing like nobody else. Larry Bird just knew how to play Basketball 🏀 like nobody else. Except for the Dunking ability. Think about that if he could jump like the rest he'd would averaged 18 rebounds a game. But he ONLY AVERAGED 10 a game. That's still better than most Centers in the Hall of Fame.
