10 strand Matthew Walker + 5 strand plait

This is a 10 strand variation of how I start most of my bellropes and keyfobs. The 5 strand plait is very easy. The 10 strand Matthew Walker is on the other hand is much harder. Having said that if you take it one step at a time, don't cut corners, and put it together in a methodical way you should get the hang of it. It is after all just a series of overhand knots, easy eh?!
Hope this is of some use, please let me know. If you like my video please share and like, It all helps.
All the cord I use in my videos is made by me on my own rope walk. I sell cord in a range of colours through my shop, here's the link.

I learnt this MW tying method from Mikko Snellman who has some really wonderful knotting videos. I'll put a link below, he also sells great knotting tools and hard laid cord.

I'm in boy scouts and I've been deemed the "knot guy" of our troop for my interest, knowledge, and skill of all the knots and more that we use in boy scouts. I just want to say that this knot is beautiful and I would really like to incorporate it into some of my knot related projects soon. It was well explained and fairly easy to follow. Good job!

The MW knot is very handsome! First time I've ever watched someone else tie it. As a young sailor(US Navy), I purchased Clifford Ashley's Book of Knots in 1972. During a 6 month deployment to SE Asia, I taught myself to tie many knots, eventually learning the MW. I've only tied it with 6 strands, and I commend your 10 strand example. My other favorites to tie are the Turks Head and Monkey Fist. I guess I need to get back into a bit of macrame' and fancy rope work. Thanks for posting this!

how much length of cord before you fold over for starting the ten strand matthew walker?
@jayj4142
@jayj4142 3 года назад
Hi, Philip - if I wanted to tie this knot along with a star knot afterward, how long should each cord be to have enough to do the star knot as well, along with another MWK after the star knot? Trying to get an idea of how much cord I’ll need before I begin cutting them into shorter lengths...thank you for sharing this video with us!
@plemas
@plemas 3 года назад
Hi Jay, thanks for your kindness. I’m sorry to say that I’m not much help. I’m hopelessly unmethodical when it comes to lengths and often get it wrong. Sadly I also Never take notes. The down side of making own cord is I don’t really need to be careful with wastage. Sorry, good luck though.
@hansdurietz8427
@hansdurietz8427 5 лет назад
Nice video! BUT...that's an awkward way of tying it - having to tuck each strand twice. If you - after having made the first overhand knot (at 3:25) - pick up the next strand to the LEFT, and then follow with each strand to the left in succession (going counterclockwise) , instead of, as shown in the video, the next strand to the right (going clockwise), you only have to tuck each strand ONCE. A lot simpler, and quicker! (Following the lead [pun intended] of The Ashley Book of Knots, p. 118, knot # 678).
@jayj4142
@jayj4142 4 года назад
The way Hans describes is how I do it too...same end results - half the steps.
@plemas
@plemas 4 года назад
same result as you say so you are of course completely right. I find this way a little easier when doing large cord count knots as you don't need to release your thumb when adding the next cord, so the cords are less likely to lose their order.

@plemas
@plemas 5 лет назад
Hi Tasha, Definitely yes. I use this and some easier knots as the hanging end of plant hangers. If you're brave you can do a 12 strand Matther Walker which will leave you with 3 sets of 4 which you can use to make a 3 strand macrame hanger. Good luck

how much cordage did you use?
@plemas

Tough question. It was awhile ago so I don’t really remember. It really depends on what you plan to do after the Matthew Walker.

What would that knot be used for?
@plemas
@plemas 5 лет назад
Ben Hansford it’s mostly decorative. If you look at some of my other videos you’ll see it in use on a mini cat of nine tails.

What is this good for? I dont see its purpose
@plemas
@plemas 4 года назад
Traditionally it was used as a stopper knot in rigging. Tied with the three strands which make up rope. Now days it’s mainly decorative. I use it as part of a bell rope or key fob. Look at my other videos for examples.
