Summary 1. Commonplace notebooks (e.g. as a resource for essays) 2. Read an academic article every morning (not necessarily relevant to one’s field study) 3. Mind-map thoughts after reading a primary source before reading secondary sources 4. Use a referencing manager (e.g. Zotero) & write down page numbers when writing down a quote 5. Talk about what you are learning 6. Keep a list of questions & ask them 7. Read regularly 8. Make a study plan at the beginning of every week 9. Organize all of your files at the end of the week 10. Keep a list of ideas and theses Hope this helps someone :) & thank you for the tips, they‘re great

Writing our own thoughts before starting any reading on the topic is such a wonderful piece of advice. So much needed now, when too many students actually skip the original thinking part and start any brainstorming with AI tools. So detrimental to their future achievements, but also dangerous to their mental health and motivation

The dialog principle or Socratic method is really the standard method in American universities. Also STEM students often compose a one-page summary of an entire course, with key principles, equations, properties, etc, then keep those in a binder afterward. I never realized this was basically a commonplace book. Thanks Ruby.

1. write down an idea which come across at that moment AND REVIEW it later (thoughts, questions and just interesting ideas) 2. read an Academic article every morning before you start studying (NOT Necessary your specific topic, just for advancing wide reading abilities) 3. draw Thinking maps for 5 minutes before start studying Read regularly Organise all of the files the end of week not to lose anything and feel tidy (Energy preserving for what really important for you when you're researching and taking notes of topics, not focusing on finding specific sources) write questions what you want to learn more in single classes

@@RubyGranger8 Such a video topic would be very relevant for people of low income status who can ill afford to pay for their own education as is commonplace in developing nations and the US, in which a year of Harvard enrollment costs more than $60,000, which increases due to the interest rates of student loans. I have always enjoyed learning and would like my afterlife to be an eternity of learning and relearning various topics as a school boy in various facilities in an endless realm of reality in which the laws of physics are mostly irrelevant and inapplicable.

YES, thank you for mentioning the thing about the page numbers!! It's so so important and oftentimes people forget to do it. I was on the last chapter of my Bachelor's thesis when my supervisor noticed that I did not write A SINGLE page number in ANY of the previous sections (aah, inexperienced little me of one year ago), so of course I had to go back and do that again. It took me so much time and ever since then I am an obsessive page-checker. So thank you for mentioning it! Great video as always, Ruby 🤍

Just wanted to let you know that I shared this with my students (and several of my colleagues have as well now), and asked them to commit to at least one of these habits. I teach literature at an American University. The most popular were 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10. (I committed to #1 for my teaching notes this semester as well.) It seems to be making a difference in the quality of class discussion--we had superb conversations about Little Women. I will keep sharing this video with my classes for the foreseeable future (or until you make an even better one).

Thank you so much! For my first and second years of university (English Lit undergrad - you inspired me to take it) I rarely attended classes because of my anxiety and issues with some people in the class. I got many written warnings about it, but I just couldn’t go a lot of the time. I realised that I was wasting my education, and it strove me to do better. Over the second half of my second year I attended more and more classes, which gave me more and more friends; I wrote my essays in advance and ended up finished ahead of my peers, and I started to enjoy education again. I’ll be in my third year in October, and I’m going to give it my all for my dissertation, the same way I did in A-Levels, which you also inspired me to work hard on. Thank you Ruby, you’re changing so many lives

**With Zotero may I recommend to manually input your articles, books etc into Zotero then you won't have to spend three hours checking through it all at the end. Once you have added the source drag and drop the pdf file into the column marked 'Title'. It will change colour and then you just drop it and it won't change your manual entry. Also when you add an author to the footnotes are you familiar with how to add in the page number, prefixes and suffixes, if need be. The only reason I am asking is because I am editing a friend's PhD at the moment and their footnotes are a mess because they were unfamiliar with how to use Zotero properly**.

My top study tip for exams would be to put aside adequate time to review all relevant material. Also, you have to believe that you can do well. Some people don't have confidence when it comes to exams, and they end up doing poorly. Also, I think you'd love law school or a journalism program. Some other options to consider!

This channel has helped inspire me a lot throughout my A-Levels! I do resonate so much with the imposter syndrome feelings as well as the self-doubt etc. For me particularly, I graduated GCSEs in 2021 and had due to the Pandemic alongside undiagnosed ASD really crashed hard in that period of time, to the point that I failed most of my GCSEs and by 2022 was in a really bad state and dropped my College BTEC course. Despite that I enrolled on A-Levels in September 2022 and just finished with AAB, maybe not impressive to a lot of people but this would've been unthinkable to me 2 years ago. I'm going to a Russell Group University this September to study History & Politics and I am the first person in my family to complete Post-16 Education and to go to University. Honestly, A-Levels has been very isolating and I definitely feel the imposter syndrome and feelings of inadequacy overtook me, yet when I look back now the people who got straight 9's 8's and 7's at GCSE who were in my Sixth Form who made me feel real inadequate at the beginning (not that they isolated or teased me, just that I didn't feel on the same level as them and so really just isolated myself) all except a few got worse A-Levels than I did. I'm now going to University in about a months time and right now just focusing on dropping the last of my bad habits to ensure that University will be a good time and that I will be able to integrate fully. For me, University represents a lot more than just the ability to study and get a degree, for me it really does represent the opportunity to escape once and for all from my previous life and to begin a new life in a completely separate place. Even though until 2022 I never even had a thought of continuing education past GCSE, I have since being a kid dreamed of running off and starting somewhere anew, and University is the perfect opportunity to do so. I don't really plan on returning back to my home town other than to visit my parents and for short-stays (I will be getting a Part-Time job in University during the Academic Year and full-time over Summer to ensure this) so this really is the beginning of a new life for me. EDIT: For those wondering how I was accepted to study A-Levels, it was due to me having done GCSEs in 2021. The College operated a course swap scheme until a month after enrolment, so if I performed really badly on the first formal assessments, then I would have been made to drop A-Levels.

Problem solving might be more effective in developing synoptic thinking than reading widely, at least in my experience. Having access to lots of different domains gives you more places to look for connections, but making connections is an exercise in knowledge discovery. The best practice I believe is tackling big interesting problems you have no idea how to solve. It's a situation where you can only make progress not so much by approaching the question directly, but by first discovering as much as you can what exists inside universe in which the question lives and figuring out how they behave, their relationships, and how they interact with each other. Those are the connections between them. Reading widely expands the domain of investigation. Could be wrong though

Oh yes please speak in PRIVILEGE to me 😂 These tips are all very good and I understand they work really well, having applied all of them some time or another. But please be aware that they are EXTREMELY time consuming and might not be good to be applied by all students. If you’ve got other chores, if you work, if you are busy in any way besides studying… please do not believe that this is the only way to go forward in your learning. This is not efficient for the majority of students. I know that writing by hand increases the chances of you remembering the material, but when writing essays and not taking exams maybe it’s better if you note your quotes with a computer, for example, for quicker access. Also, those Muji super slim notebooks are f* expensive if you need to use them for extensive note taking and different projects! Super convenient to carry around but hey, any random slim pocket notebook will do, or even a stack of post-it notes. I know that she’s got and incredible love for learning and romanticising what she does but please do not believe that you’re a bad student just because you cannot take pretty notes in super smooth and fancy paper. You do not need to write everything by hand. You do not even need to write down everything. You do not need fancy stationery either. Go and be the best student you can be without comparing yourself to others!

Hi Ruby! Could you make a video on how to do critical reading properly? When reading an article, I often find myself just agreeing with everything the author says, like “yeah that makes sense”, and I don’t know how to engage with the information. And then I tend to forget the arguments after a few weeks. I mean especially general critical reading for class or for pleasure, rather than for an essay. If you have a way of approaching critical reading, making notes on it, questioning the information etc, would you consider making a video? It would be greatly appreciated ❤️

This is such a good question and there isn’t a quick fix because it is definitely a skill you get to learn during your time at education. One of the best ways to practise is to read really old criticism (like from the 70s). You’ll find it much easier to disagree with parts of it, which kind of trains your brain not to trust everything you read in an essay! x

Ruby, you gave some excellent tips to students who are going to study at University. It might help them get higher marks in their essays. When are you going to do your PhD?

The great majority of people would need to combine self-driven learning with a full time job. Do you also need to balance that circumstance?
