yeah, that stupid menu that shows up if the stylus is moving to slow when drawing a line. little circle goes around the cursor and opens a quick menu. idk what its called, but I can't find the setting that gets rid of it.
@@PeterGreatness It could be because you were selected something else like text or something, if that is the case, then click "select" and then click none, it should fic the problem :)
@@picklepixelpaperpepper8487 It' probably just because you hold it down on it for too long, that used to annoy me aswell but I started just doing it quicker
Great video lessons, thankyou Davies, here are my issues with GIMP, 1) When moving the dialog tool box, even when i touch teh blue border of teh side it doesnt attach/connect, instead it creates a floating dialog 2) there is sometimes a yellow border or white border on a layer/object adn when i click Esc it doesnt d-select, even wehn i click Edit> Select >None the selection lines remain (i was PaintDotNet user) I prefer Esc since its easier to reach, I tried changing the chortcut in GMP but it wont let me assign Esc 3) When i want to delete a selection it doesnt let me use teh Del key, i have to use Ctrl-X but that is slower to reach on keyboard 4) the layer blend options are confusing, it would be good if there was a image example for every layer to show what it does. Having said all taht GIMP is super powerful adn free and has many many great things to offer, so i dont want to sound ungrateful, but they are the things i experienced since moving form PDN(Paint DOt Net). Thankyou for your great tutorials, imo your lessons re GIMP are the best . I fist moved to GIMP becasue teh perspective transofrm options in PDN were slow and i stll use PDN for basic stuff, but yes GIMP is impressive too. Thankyou Davies Media Design adn Thankyou GIMP :)
Thanks for making this video. Being an occasional PS user, i have always been frustrated with GIMP. Here's a list of things I would like to change about GIMP - Automatically change layer size to content. Why would anybody like to have empty space around the content of a layer when they have erased it - Erase to transparency automatically. Erase means "erase", not "paint in my background color" - Do not present an options dialog when adding new layer. This is just an extra click and flow breaker - Create a layer out of the the image that I pasted into GIMP. Why keep it in a floating state until one presses the a button layers panel. - Confine selection to the image perimeter. Why would anything be allowed to be selected outside of the image confines :s - Improve interface. All interface elements, the cursors, selection lines, transform bounding box; everything feels janky, bloaty and unpolished - and most importantly, *optimize GIMP*. It is WAY TOO SLOW. Everything is "low FPS" in GIMP. I just doesn't feel snappy for even small tasks. Of course I do realize how much (huge) effort goes into creating a software of such scale and on top of that providing it for free. I'm very thankful for being able to use GIMP for free.
pretty much agree with all of this, except sometimes there are reasons to have empty space around the content of a layer. for example, if you have content with a transparent background on your layer & the layer is cropped to its content, warping the content or applying gaussian blur or using the drop shadow filter thing would all end up cut out weirdly in abrupt straight lines, right along the edges of the layer.
as an artist i disagree with you on some points, i use those you want to change quite regularly and are important for my work. i love it the way it is, and it is not PS user friendly.
Thanks for the video. I don't know enough GIMP yet to be annoyed by anything, but you showed me how to do a lot of simple things (mostly shortcuts) that I haven't been taught in the dozen or so GIMP classes that I've taken.
Nice video, but I think it might be helpful to distinguish “beginners” from “transitioners from other software (mostly Photoshop).” Five things that annoy image editing novices and five things that annoy people moving from Photoshop, perhaps?
TIPS FOR GIMP DEVS : - The simple way to fix the save feature is to unify the Export+Save options or to replace the labeling.. "Save NATIVE" instead of "Save".. that way it's much more intuitive. - Fix the Select Multiple Layers! This is a ruining behavior on the workflow - Add the Hand tool , it is a one icon addition that can save so much beginners frustrations - point 7 and 8 : make the crop to layer AUTOMATIC behavior, same for adding alpha channel, thing that are common sense for users should be automated Bonus: - Integrate the SIMPLIFY plug in (to improve the path tracing function since its very bad right now)
Thankfully I found this video, I was just about to give Gimp away and delete it but your video has resolved most of the problems I was having so thank you for this video.
Excellent tutorial - thank you. The thing that most frustrates me is managing image, layer and canvas sizes. For example, it is not (always) clear what the difference between image, content, layer, selection and canvas is. In some cases it is obvious but not in others.
Wonderful stuff.. I learnt using GIMP by watching your tutorials and that is too within a very short period of time! Respect and appreciation for your dedication! For the sake of improvement, I would like to suggest to keep your words speed slightly slow as it will make these videos more easy to understand for people whose native language is not English!
Very usefull overview. An other trick I use often is to affect a letter to "paste as a new layer" (for exemple "Ctrl+y) and to do Crtl+c, Ctrl+y, Maj+Ctrl+a, to work on a new copy of an area.
Some of this I painstaking learned, some I learned from you previous videos & some were new to me. As always a great tutorial, thank you. Big 👍# 5 Stay well, Joe Z
ive been using Gimp for 10 years and i admit i am the beginner :c , thanks for this very valuable tutorial and hope i will be alive during this century for the next update :)
Thank you!! I am getting back into creating images (had to take a medical break) and just uploaded the newest version. I love all the tips you give us. I am definitely going to be trying out some of the new Text images that you have created. Love the Wave one you did!!
For a second i was imagining Item 7 would be that weir dbehaviour where if you are drawing and erasing in one layer, you can still see what you erased because the color information is there, it's just set it's alpha to be completely transparent, so if you mess up with the export or export to something like GIF that doesn't support alfa beyond 1 bit, you get all the things you thought you erased back. Absolutely fun when you're working on a bitmap font and you suddenly get a garbled mess because the eraser tool kept the RGB channels of your previous strokes intact.
Tremendously helpful that you "preorganize" the presentation around problems users run into rather than "how to use" a particular function. I had given up on using GIMP again because it was just too much of a hassle to track down what I needed because I didn't understand enough to know what I needed to know. Your approach gives a huge "leg up" on this problem. Thanks!
<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="879">14:39</a> I think the wording is a little misleading here. what really moves the layer group is having the move tool set to "move the active layer". it worked in the video because the tool was set to "pick a layer or guide" and the shift key toggles the other mode, as covered in the 1st tip, but if "move the active layer" is already the default, holding the shift key only reverses the effect. thank you for the video, though :) very straightforward
Awesome video! I didn't know about using gray as a color for painting on a layer mask with some transparency. Groovy! By the way, "dialogue" should be spelled "dialog". :) Thanks for posting!!!!!
Seriously!!! I at least am old enough to have 2.5 magnification readers at the ready... I'm going to introduce GIMP to some teachers and *this* will be very handy to refer them to.
Great video and perfect timing just today I downloaded Gimp... Moving tool was messing me up... I couldn't move the layer pixels it was just moving my selection 😅
Something that annoyed me was the layer boundaries. When I was working with several layers of different sizes and I wanted to paint outside that layer's boundary, it wouldn't let me, I thought it was because I had something selected, clicked Shift+Crtl+A, and still wouldn't let me. Now I understand that the layer boundaries exist and how to change them in the layer menu (perhaps there is a quicker way, I'm still learning).
awesome video!! there is something that i really dont like about the workflow in gimp. whenever i scroll with my mousewheel through the side panels it accidentally changes values of different parameters instead of scrolling. i was wondering if there's a way to turn that off. thanks:) all the best.
How can you record the video of using Gimp? Whenever I start screen recording, Gimp doesn't work properly anymore. Specifically, it doesn't let me drag & drop anymore
Hello! This is the closest related video I could find to my problem: Every so often when I switch over to the eraser tool (with E) it automatically toggles "Anti erase". I shouldn't have to hold down alt, since most of the time it just switches to the regular eraser, but having to manually uncheck "Anti erase" every third time or so is driving me crazy. Any idea what the cause could be? I'm using an old Wacom drawing tablet, if that makes a difference. Thank you in advance!
You managed to scale a layer independently of the other Iv got this job with multiple layers (a .pdf from a scan) & yes ofc Im a Gimp noob ...I cannot seem to drag just one layer into to align it within the ruler guides I was set - without all the other damn layers copying that move OMG what am I not doing or seeing here??
Hello Davies.. Sometimes I fail to save a jpeg with exif in gimp. That doesn't happen always. Though the original file has exif info, after saving as jpeg from gimp, it doesn't show any exif info. Any solution? Thank you.
So people scale down a layer from say 3000px to 1000px and wonder why the layer has lost quality? Do they want 1000px to look as good as 3000px? Are they being stupid?
Love your channel it has been very helpful with my photo/video editing. Do you know of a way to cut a section(s) out of an image and keep that section(s) transparent? Transparent to the point I could apply it over a video like a filter, is that possible with GIMP? If so how does it work?
Yes - simply right-click on the image layer and click "Add alpha channel." Cut out the area you want to make transparent using any of the selection tools (i.e. rectangle select, lasso, ellipse select). Then, export to a filetype that supports transparency such as PNG.
90% of the time, I can't get any tool to work, because it wants to be the move tool. Right now, I've clicked the fuzzy select tool at least 50 times and when I hover over the image, it changes to the move tool, which is absolutely obnoxious.
Hello! Been watching your vids lately since im looking to get into some small editing of my own pictures and stuff like that. DIdnt find any movie about this spesific case however. If i have a picture where there is bunch of small hair slightly covering an eye on a photo, i couldnt find any way to remove this. Even with the heal function on gimp:) Any tutorial possible?
Only one complaint -- 83-year-old ears cannot understand a video well enough. Is any of this available in a form I could print out myself? It is so taunting!
No doubt this tool isn't fun, which implies you only use it when you really have to. Result is that there's no chance of gaining any proficiency; the thing defeats itself. I almost cannot say how much I hate it.
