10 Things I DON’T Like About Namibia! 

Alcohols are prohibited to buy from supermarkets, especially during Sundays and public holidays. But you can still buy from bars, Restaurants, and hotels, you are not allowed to walk around with alcohol in the streets of Namibia.

Namibia is an interesting destination with millionaires and high employment on the other end of the scale, and due to poverty crime rate is high. 50% of the food is imported which is why things are expensive. Thank you Lenox for sharing your experience. Cheers!

Your guest's example of the huge income inequality is not makesure. Of course, blacks will be mainly the ones working in the service industry. She seems to imply that we are just workers and therefore don't have money to visit these places. Firstly, Swakopmund is a tourist town. The white people you see on the streets and cafes during the week are mainly tourists from other countries. The local white and black middle class would be working in offices, schools, mines, etc. And naturally the only black people visitors will encounter in the city centre will be the ones working in the tourism service industry. But if you guys had come in December, you would have a different view. December is the month when most locals travel throughout the country, including the coast. But you can't expect huge groups of black locals to be on holiday every day for our small population.

Thank you for visiting Namibia.. 1. Namibia is diverse. Some places/towns are cheap.. some places are expensive..especially when it comes to accommodation. 2. Our malls close 6 to 7 pm,it assists in controlling crime and prevents vandalizing of properties. But super markets are open until 10 pm if someone wants to buy food or drinks,and service stations dont close,you can buy there. 3. Selling of alcohol in shops on Saturday closes at 2,and Sundays they dont sell,but bars,lodges,restaurants and most guesthouses do sell. Its a memeasure in place to allow small scale businesses like bars to make money,and it also helps in controlling street violence and alcohol abuse,Namibians can drink 😅

So in big cities you don't use transport to get around them? There are smaller and convenient taxis that transport people from one point to another. In other countries, smaller are quite expensive, you have to use a mini-bus which takes time to fill up. In fact fuel is more expensive in other countries like Zambia, Zim and SA.

Thank you for visiting Namibia, but just take note that in every developed country things are never cheap, for as long as we are crying for development in Africa we should also take into consideration that it’s not cheap to live in a developed country. Things might be expensive for travelers in Namibia but one has to plan very well when coming to Namibia, accommodation truly speaking is not cheap here, if you have a good friend in Namibia or you prefer to camp then it’s gonna be cheaper. Also take note that compared to many African countries, Namibia pays better salaries and employees has a lot of benefits, old people has a monthly income and many other social grants or benefits provided to citizens and that make it better for the Namibians to live better in their expensive country.

I’ll be visiting in a couple of days hope to see some changes since I haven’t been there since 2011.

In the area of the south and other towns here where I live in the U S, some Counties are Dry counties, Alcohol considered Illegal. It wasn't such a long time ago that my county wasn't allowed to sell alcohol at all! Now it is sold, but on Sunday's Not until after 1:00 pm. You could buy alcohol on Sundays in bars or sheebens. There are bars in various locations especially in the hood.

You need to consider context of the country's population. You cannot compare shops opening very late in bigger cities were the market is bigger with populations going above 3 million. The entire country has about 3 million ppl.

Mrs Tsitsi Mandlovu Dont embarass us.😴How does a Zimbabwean not know the word hawkers? Kenyans are highly educated and proficient in the English language. Also, taxis in Namibia (R13 to R20) are 5 times cheaper than Zimbabwe. However, I do agree with the Kenyan guy that accomodation and food are very expensive in Namibia. I worked in Windhoek for 7 years and I enjoyed myself over there. Lived in Ausspanplatz, Windhoek West and Eros near Joes Beerhouse. That time 2010, accomodation was very cheap, lodges were around R50 a day. Nowadays it's around R400 a day.

Lennox you were suppose to hook up with locals to take you around i dont think @Kishmyworld will have the same problems as yours cos he was mostly with locals, while you were just roaming around

Thanks for visiting our country. Your choice of accommodation location was a major disadvantage. Academia is mainly a residential area far from city centre. The people that live there mostly work in the city centre during the day so you'll hardly find people in the streets. It's the case with most Windhoek suburbs. Even certain areas in Katutura you won't find people in the streets during weekdays because people are at work. Which is why even hawkers will not be in the streets since potential customers are in offices, hospitals, restaurants etc. working. So it's better to get accommodation in places such as Windhoek North or Windhoek West. These are a few minutes walk to town. When talking about operating hours of businesses here you need to factor in our population size. It does not make business sense to open a shop until late to cater for a few people that remained in town and still have to pay workers overtime. Weekends are for resting so people usually do shopping morning hours. Again overtime kicks in especially on Sundays where the hourly wage is double. So one can't keep a shop open for hours just to cater to a few customers. Also bear in mind that Namibia is a multi ethnic and multi cultural country, and what is offered as local food at single quarters is mainly just from one ethnic group. But there are a lot of places that sell "local" food and not just in the locations. There's a lot of braai spots one can try as well. Even supermarkets in the CBD sell pap. I hope others who are coming to visit will take this into consideration.
