I fly long haul international several times a year. I’ve tried ALL the neck pillows and the foot hammock. I hate them all. I agree with almost everything you said. Love my compression cubes. I dress in layers. I always wear pants on a plane. I wear a tank/Tshirt with a cardigan over it. I have never needed a blanket. I often use the airline pillow for lumbar support. I try to avoid bringing many liquids so I use solid bar shampoo. I do use reusable squeeze bottles for my conditioner. I must be a 1%er because I do use face masks and eye patches on the plane! I don’t sleep on planes and my skin gets dry so after the plane is dark and everyone is asleep, I bust out my mask/patches. It helps me feel better. And, frankly, I don’t care what anyone else thinks. 😂

Lol I can't really sleep on planes either. So maybe that's why I refuse to lug around a neck pillow. I've had quite a few people in the comments here say they use face masks and eye patches so you're not the only one lol. I just picture Mrs. Doubtfire in my mind when I think about it. "helllooooo" lol.

Agree with you. My pants are cinched at ankle or calf. Wide leg pants on the bathroom floor, yuck. I always use my barefoot dreams cardigan, and it works perfectly whether as a jacket, blanket or pillow.

Packing cubes are a godsend for cross packing. I pack a whole outfit in each cube and throw some in my husband's case and vice versa. If one of our bags doesn’t make it ... trip saved!

A use case for your own towel is a microfibre towel for your hair - if you have frizzy or curly hair you know what I'm talking about. the great thing about microfibre towels is that they can be very light and pack up really small and they dry quickly.
@ThickGirlzGuide
@ThickGirlzGuide Месяц назад
This is also what someone else said with curly fine hair, so that makes sense. She was also saying she uses it as a blanket on the plane so definitely maximizing what she is bringing.

I am with several others about the packing cubes. I had used them on several trips and was at a point I was ready to give up on them. Then came my aha moment. Packed concourse, lines of people going overseas and at 4 of the counters were people scrambling to get their luggage under the weight limit (those pesky souvenirs can get hefty!). Our turn came and dang, my bag was heavier than I thought. Popped the suitcase open, pulled out my two heaviest cubes and weighed them, popped them into another bag and done! No one watched my undies or other clothes being scooted around, it was calm, easy and quick. That trip made me a packing cube believer. So my take away was make sure I pack my luggage scale and use my compression cubes and my trip will be much easier
@ThickGirlzGuide
@ThickGirlzGuide Месяц назад
Lol, this reminds me of my mom and I flying back from Hawaii and her suitcase was overstuffed and she had to pull a bunch of junk out. I use compression packing cubes but not regular packing cubes, but either way my mom could have benefitted either one in this scenario. I swear by my luggage scale, so I never have this issue. It's a life saver!
@flooshoomoo7104
@flooshoomoo7104 Месяц назад
My take on packing cubes vs compression cubes- if your suitcase already includes a compression system or you are a roll packer, there isn’t much to compress. It’s just gonna have more of a pinched the edges a bit. The downside is that compression cubes usually don’t open all the way around and a huge reason I love them is unzipping the whole cube and popping it on a shelf or in a drawer. I can pack or unpack my bags in five minutes perfectly tidy and organized.
@ThickGirlzGuide
@ThickGirlzGuide Месяц назад
See I would unpack the packing cube lol, not work out of it. So that's why they don't make sense for me. I have never seen a suitcase with a compression system, only the strap to help it not shift around. So, I'll have to look into that.

Towels.. only 4* or 5* hotels provide 'pool towels' in UK and Europe, the towel from the room are for use for the shower/bath, therefore if you use that 1 (they only give 1 per person) for the pool, you wont have a dry towel to then use after your shower. I've started to carry one of those very thin/linen ones as an extra as take up no room, but if we stay 4*/5* we rent the hotel pool towels, and I fully agree, they take up way too much room. from the UK
@ThickGirlzGuide

Ok interesting, I didn't know it helps with circulation and leg swelling, that would make more sense to use in that situation. Compression socks I can absolutely see the use in wearing on a long flight or if someone has bad circulation as well.

FYI- flight attendants agree that the plane blankets aren’t cleaned between flights. Gross! So, unless you’re the first person to use the blanket, you have no idea what’s on that blanket. If you’re on a long haul flight it’s a good idea to just bring your own blanket.
@ThickGirlzGuide
@ThickGirlzGuide Месяц назад
I can understand not wanting to use the airplane blankets, but I'd just dress in layers, so I don't have to lug a blanket around.
@_brandixx
@_brandixx Месяц назад
Completely agree on all these. I’ve found that most travel items tend to just take up a ton of space and are generally only “useful” for people who check bags or don’t care about luggage weight. Like, a 3-day trip? Sure, bring your neck pillow and foot hammock and towel and 15 pairs of heels for costume changes for your IG reel and lug it to your single destination in a taxi. But a 3-week+ trip with a suitcase full of plus size clothes, pjs, undies, shoes, and maybe a cpap or work-related electronics plus a bunch of bs “travel must-haves”, and maybe multiple destinations using public transport or high speed trains or budget airlines? No way in hell. So much of these “must haves” are for IG aesthetics or people who travel in 1st class and for some reason need the full comforts of being on their couch for the whole 6 hours of their flight. Tres tres bizarre.
@ThickGirlzGuide
@ThickGirlzGuide Месяц назад
Exactly! It's no joke trying to lug a bunch of stuff around on a long trip. You have to maximize what you bring and ensure you will really use it/wear it multiple times.

One reason I bet not many people will think of for bringing your own towel, scent sensitivity, which I have. Fabric softener and most things scented with synthetic perfumes give me a headache, sometimes a full blown migraine. I can maybe dab some water off my body real quick without transfering too much scent, but I cannot use a normal towel to get water out of my hair without tons of transfer. The towel I travel with is a turkish towel though, much more compact than a regular towel.
@ThickGirlzGuide
@ThickGirlzGuide Месяц назад
Great point! That makes sense, one of my cousins was allergic to fabric softener. So, I can see having to be careful about this when traveling.

Agree on most of what you listed except two: Packing cubes: Been using thrm for awhile & I like how I can organize my clothes (e.g. tops in one cube, pants in another cube) Towels: I prefer my own towel, large & some fluff plus its clean. Many hotel towels are thin & who knows how they clean them! 😄

@ThickGirlzGuide Месяц назад

People bring their own towels cause for beach resort trips the towels given are not always clean and /or u get just one which u clip to your chair so u use ur own to dry off etc… and many more reasons… microfiber ones are very packable and dry quickly and are great! Compression cubes im a true believer after ive seen people having to unload their undies at security etc.. and it prevents bed bugs or any bugs get into your clothes etc…
@ThickGirlzGuide
@ThickGirlzGuide Месяц назад
I've never been to a resort or hotel that limits towels, but if someone wants to bring a towel and that makes them more comfortable, then go for it. And I don't think packing cubes are going to prevent bed bugs, if the room is infested then they are in the bed, carpet etc. When dirty laundry or PJ's hit the floor/bed and are put back into your luggage when you leave then those things are getting into everything. But again, if people prefer to use them when traveling then that's ok, you 've got to do what works best for you.

I agree about the neck pillow. HOWEVER, I like to travel with the soft pillowcase from a neck pillow - that has a zipper to get inside, and a snap holding the ends together. I’ll stuff the case with my hoodie, scarf etc. so I (1) have a pillow for neck or back coming and going. (2) have a pillow between my knees at night (3) snaps to my suitcase if I don’t have room for the hoodie/scarf in my carry on only luggage. Win/Win

I have an inflatable pillow that rolls up into the size of a burrito. It allows me to lean my head to one side and then goes across my body so I can kinda “hug” it to hold it in place. Gives me the perfect sleeping position given that I only fly in window seats. I also take a shawl or sweatshirt-type jacket because I undoubtedly wind up getting cold in that window seat & there’s no way in hell I’ll use those community blankets on the plane unless I’m flying business or 1st class in a lay-flat seat. I also love packing cubes, compression & otherwise - I have ADHD & they help me get and stay organized, especially because I don’t like to fully unpack depending on where I’m going due to concerns about bed bugs. And finally I have 100% used face masks on planes! I have a 13 hour flight in two days have already packed them. On such a long flight, the air is so very, very dry, and why not treat myself when I already have the things at home. Somehow I always wind up getting them as gifts. I’ve used them right in economy; I’m no influencer & I don’t give a damn who’s looking at me, lol, but for sure when I’m in business class or higher.

I wonder if the hanging foot rest bothers the person sitting in front of you by putting too much pressure on the tray table.

Hummm maybe if the person using it was shifting around a lot. But if they are pretty still it's probably ok

On my last cruise, the bathroom towels were so thin and smelled absolutely disgusting. So next month I’ll be taking a hair towel to dry off

I bring my own wrap towel with snaps when I’m going to be sharing a hotel room with girlfriends. Putting a bra on immediately after a shower is no fun!

I bring my own towel when I'll be on my period.

Yeah, I can see how that might make you more comfortable during that time of the month.

Agree on everything with 2 exceptions. I have a zippered stuffable neck pillow I always take (empty) with me so if I want to purchase something I just fill it with some of my clothes on my trip home and make more room in my luggage. And second I always take a thin microfiber towel with me and this is non negotiable! My hair is naturally curly and fine and there’s no way I’d let a regular towel touch it! 😂 But it folds up tiny and I also use it as a blanket during the flight

That's a good tip for the stuff able neck pillow, especially if you're doing carry on only. And as long as you're using the towel for multiple purposes and it's very compact then that makes sense.
