I had been a fan of Levitt for several years before this movie. About 1994, when Angels in the Outfield and Holy Matrimony came out. And 3rd Rock From The Sun had already been going for a couple years before 10 TIHAY came out. They filmed at Stadium in Summer 1998, in between my junior and senior year. They weren't allowed to do any filming during the school year, so they had to wait until summer. The actors and crew were spotted in the afternoons after school got out towards the end of June. It was pretty cool to see the changes they did to the school before filming.

I one saving grace of "Taming of the Shrew" is it's "play within a play" framing that most forget. It presents the drama of Kathrine, Bianca, their suitors and Kathrine's torture and mental destruction as being a play presented as it's own mind game to the man watching it (I think I recall another video saying it was a pauper set up as a prince). But to this day I hold that "10 Things I Hate About You" is a far more palatable translation of the story.

Yeah but Shakespeare forgets his own framing device and never wraps Christopher Sly's story. Directors wrestle with that part all the time. I've seen shows that drop it and my favourite version by Windmill finishes it for Shakespeare by having Katherina punch Christopher at the end for enjoying her torment.

@@Firegen1 God only knows how it was performed on a day to day basis back in Shakespeare's time considering the way early editions of all his plays vary. While this might be a stretch, my Shakespeare prof pointed out that it's possible to make the play more palatable to modern audiences by playing Kate's last speech differently-- because the fact she was tamed did mean her husband got lots of moola, so you could possibly play that bit as Kate submitting with a hint of sarcasm and with the intentions of ending up with the riches, but again it's a stretch. Not to mention Shrew is a derivative work from another play from the period which did conclude the framing device, which is something to consider.

For anyone saying “oh that’s just how things were at the time” no it wasn’t. This was controversial even at the time. To give you an idea, John Fletcher (Shakespeare spiritual successor) wrote a sequel for the play in which the Petruchio remarried after Katherine dies and his new wife puts him through all the horrible stuff he put Katherine through and at the ends breaks his spirit the same way he broke Katherine’s. It’s called “The tamer tame”. Yeah that’s how hated that play was at the time.

This is in the top 3 best off-text Shakespeare adaptations. The other two are "O", a version of Othello set in a prep school, and "Scotland PA", a version of MacBeth set in a fast food joint. All three are amazingly well written and made.

O is a fantastic movie. It especially impressed me in how it dealt with the change in venue and time. Iago is a jealous monster, but Hugo is a sad, wounded boy. And check out the difference in Iago/Hugo's last line: "From this time forth I never will speak word." In the original, it's meant as "fuck you, I'm not explaining nothing, you all can go fuck yourselves." But in the film, it's "I know my fucking rights, you can't make me say anything." A subtle difference, but a great example of how to interpret the same line two different ways. It was a great transition, really well done. (If you get a chance, get a hold of the DVD with the commentary. The director's got a ton of interesting stuff to say about the film.)

3:57 Every time I watch this part, it's astounding how Bianca barely acknowledges the fact that her arrow went through somebody's back. You'd think that she would be doubled over in shock and falling over her knees apologizing to that guy, but nope. And it's not like she's unaware, she sees it and gives no reaction whatsoever. She's focused on Joey who's annoying her.

By the way, Petruchio IS tamed in the original. The point of the ending is that she has figured out how to get what she wants out of him. To us now, it looks like she's agreeing to be a doormat, but for people of the time, it would have come off as a woman getting very smart about how to deal with an egotistical asshat who isn't bright enough to understand what's going on. For that era, it was actually a pretty radical play.

Aaaahhh I've never been a big fan of that reading. Although myself and my best friend have spent hours of our college years trying to convince the other of our interpretation. even dragging eachother to see the play multiple times! To this day we will bicker about it if we have nothing else to talk about. For what it's worth I have always thought Shakespeare was a man of his time, and Kate submitting at the end is a lot more "if you know what's good for you" than a meeting between equals. I don't see this as radical I don't see any of his work as radical (genius use of language and plots - yes. A progressive he was not) I think a big thing is if he steps on her hand at the end (which very few interpretation of the play will have him do - but my god it silences a room if he does) Anyway. I haven't argued this in a while... Thanks for the nostalgia trip!!! Think I need to give my friend a call 😁😁😁

It's not a meeting between equals. I never said it was. But Shakespeare's women tend to be strong, tough, and able to run rings around the men. Kate would not be the only one who got what she wanted. It's easy to interpret this stuff as being sexist and all that, but there is such a thing as subtext, and Shakespeare definitely made use of it all the time. It helps if you've studied the language he wrote in, as Elizabeth English is rather different from our own. No matter how much folks now may think they understand it, there's a hell of a lot of nuance it's very hard to pick up on now, as his plays were full of references to things we don't know about anymore.

@@TheEmmaHouli What is even funnier about this interpretation is, having been raised in an household with a super controlling father who wanted nothing more than "tamed" family, you actually do what the first person said. You learn to control them & let them think they're the boss. If 13 year old me could work that out I suspect Katherine who is much smarter could have. Having said that the play was written by a guy so if he understood just how much "managing" of men went on in that era by their subservient wives I'd be surprised. Though Strangely Petruchio see's Kate as a Falcon to be tamed to hand ie to learn to trust it's owner and he does it the way you tame a falcon & even goes about it the same way, which always makes me wonder just what he sees in her, because a falcon is not a pet it is something you work with to go hunting, not a chicken you keep captive in the yard for eggs.

+wwaxwork Exactly. Shakespeare understood women far more than a lot of people give him credit for. And the fact that he lived 400 years ago doesn't mean he couldn't see what went on around him. All you have to do to understand that is read how he wrote the women in his plays. If he really was a sexist and dismissed women, they would not have been half as strong, interesting, and compelling as they are. As to Petruchio, well, obviously he wasn't interested in marrying a doormat like Bianca. He LIKED Kate's strength and sharp tongue - he just expected to be obeyed as a husband, which was the norm for the time.

@@Serai3 I don't think Shakespeare was sexist - that would very much be a case of reading him by our modern standards. I just also don't think he was radical. I think he was of his time. In saying that, gender norms and roles were very different back then. This is a play about societies expectations and gender norms which were probably more subtle and complex than we give it credit for. None the less I still think the play ultimately (in my opinion) it comes down on the side of "happiness is when everyone knows there place". Interesting point being brought up though about her (for want of a better phrase) topping from the bottom. I can kind of see it, but that final speech just puts blinders on me. I just don't buy that she is doing it sarcasticly. But i concede that's my own bias. I am trying to keep my tone at a good level here. But it never comes off well in text (or a RU-vid comments section) I love talking about this play! And I really like your insights!

I loved that movie when I was a kid. They really did make it funny and I was a Liz/Dick fan(okay I was a weird kid) so that added something to it. I actually blame them for me not realizing how problematic the story actually is for years and years.

This movie is my all time favourite, not because it's an oscar-winner drama with deepness and world changing thoughts, but because whether I'm happy or sad, want to laugh my ass off, cry my eyes out or just in the mood of not giving a fuck I can watch this masterpiece and just pretend for half an hour that Heath Ledger is still among us

Yeah I don’t claim to be an expert of the Bard but I know it’s considered one of his worst plays. Of course everything that Shakespeare wrote had a huge impact to some degree (its Shakespear, come on) but that doesn’t make everything he wrote good. This one looks disgustingly hard to read or witness. But the movie’s actually fun for what it is. And shockingly effective at points

God Heath Ledger was so freaking hot back then. It makes me sad, wishing he was still alive. An incredible actor with so much talent, gone way too soon. The 1990's was a great decade for movies and adaptations of original plays. 10 Things I Hate About You, Clueless, The Matrix, and so many other great movies with compelling story lines inspired by literature and philosophy.

I think you've misunderstood the ending of Taming. It's subtle, but you can see Petruccio being as devout to Catherine as she's to him. Basically, they've tamed each other. Or, he tamed her on the surface, while she tamed him under the surface. As has often been the case with many working relationships even in present day.

Not long after I saw this movie for the first time, which would've probably been about 19 years ago as the wait for DVDs in the UK back then was quite a bit longer than it is now, I was talking about it with a couple of friend in an electronics lesson, you know where you learn how to put basic circuits together and stuff, and we had a substitute teacher that day who overheard and joined in the conversation and told us all about the fact it was loosely based off Taming of the Shrew. I must have watched it over 20 times since its release as even now I go out of my way to watch it once a year, and I'm sure there are times I've watched it more than that. From the first time I watched it to now it is still my favourite movie, and to think the main reason I wanted to check the movie out is I wanted to see what Alex Mack was up to 😆

I remember one of the classic movie renditions of Taming where it stuck to the play more, but had one interesting note at the end. While Katherine is tamed in that movie, she gets in one last jolt of independence when she leaves Petruchio stumbling over himself to catch up as they enter his estate, while everyone laughs at how despite his attempted taming, she still has her ways to show her man that she's still got some power over him.

Please do a "things you didn't know" about Lone Survivor I think it would be a Credit to the people who serve not just in the special forces But you just serve It's my favourite Movie and because I know a lot of the real facts that the men went through and what Marcus had to go through even been captured by the Taliban for over 30 hours And one team member to win the first medal of honour since Nam and Mogadishu much love from Ireland!

@cinefix what source has dated Taming of the Shrew to 1591? It seems early. Brockett and Hildy just refers to it as one of earlier plays.

Here in Brazil there was a soap opera called "O Cravo e a Rosa" or "The Thorn and the Rose", and the story was set in the 1920s, and it was a good adaptation too o/

You should do a "What's the Difference" episode on Labyrinth since you like the fantasy genre so much . And yes, there IS a book about Labyrinth by A.C.H. Smith and Jim Henson.
