These are very valuable rules for anybody who wants to get rich. Unfortunately, most people who will watch this video will not really be able to apply the principles. We may not want to admit, but as Warren Buffett once said, investing is like any other profession-- it requires a certain level of expertise. No surprise that some people are losing a lot of money in the bear market, while others are making hundreds of thousands in profit. I just don't know how they do it. I have about $89k now to put in the market.

Understanding personal finances and investing will most likely lead to greater financial independence. By being knowledgeable about money and investing, individuals can make informed decisions about how to save, spend, and invest their money. I know someone who made over $350k in this recession influenced market, but to the best of my knowledge, it was through a financial advisor.

That's awesome! Investing in stocks with a reliable trading system can lead to great outcomes. It's fantastic that you've been working with a financial advisor for a year now. Starting with less than $200K and being just $19,000 away from making half a million in profit is impressive! Keep up the good work!

One of the most articulated conversations about money I've heard: The 10 Lessons: 1. Money is important ( it's all about your mindset about money) 2. Money = Time ( how much money you exchange your time for) 3. Money = Value ( Seeing yourself as a person of value. You & your time are worth all the money) 4. What people say it doesn't matter ( They speak from their own perspective, it's all about them, not about you) 5. What people say it matters when it's your opinion about yourself. What affirmation am I telling myself? What do I define myself? Am I using empowering words? 6. It's really simple - just listen to what Grandma told you. The essence is this: Spend less, earn more, invest wisely & most of all - Value yourself 7. Simple, it's not that easy. Understand Parkinson law - Why most people retire poor. When it comes to spending I'm a 12 year old. To counter it and be successful as soon as the money comes in the account, it goes to special accounts for investments, for tax & for living expenses. 8. Being broke sucks. Everything is urgent. You are a full-time problem solver, and it takes all your thinking space. Breathe, Free your mind, and be successful in the direction of my purpose. Find my purpose and stop sabotaging myself and become successful 9. Stay broke - Epictetus said " Wealth consists not in having many possessions but in having few wants" - the porodox is that the more money you have, the more quiet and no wifi you want. To be present in your own life. Choose to live like you are broke 10. Money is not important - when you have it!

Sadly I think people in the comments are missing the point. The circular structure of the talk is absolutely beautiful and true. It doesn't end with "money isn't important"-if you have it. Quite the contrary money isn't important once you've realized their importance and adjusted your life to that importance. It only then stops being "important" like that jewish mother's advice "If you spend less than you earn, you will always be rich". and this should be the conclusion from this video that money isn't important when you realize that you can minimize your wants and some "needs" to the point where you can have extra money at the end of the month, and so always live in abundance. In other words, abundance is relative to your behavior towards it, and thus the importance of money is relative to your behavior towards it. If you allow yourself to be stranguled by monetary issues then money becomes more important than yourself, but if you can educate your impulses you can control the magnitude of importance of money in your life, and this goes for any level in society but like she well said, it is almost impossible when you're struggling to make ends meet, to plan ahead. Without planing ahead you are bound to make poor decisions and so not regain control over your finances. On the other end of the spectrum, if you're earning quite well and have increased your comfort and "need" to match your income, which we all do, it will be almost impossible to refrain from spending money you know you have. This discipline is almost the same in both scenarios, with the difference being in the motivation, one is fear driven spending, whereas the other is temptation spending and also fear of missing out maybe. I know because I've been in both situations, and I can confirm it's just as hard.

Not so sure. The bit about not being able to afford a cake was a complete lie, even poor people know about overdrafts. It felt fake and cringey. When you have that enough experience and education you have a massive asset, money will never matter like it matter to most people. This seemed more like a white rich person problem and is probably misleading for most people. I'm willing to bet that the IRS probably took all her free cash but not her house. It's like those rich celebs who are like I went broke and then came back, so can anyone else. It's completely different. Plus half the talk seemed to just be about how it's ok to be a bad person just ignore all the haters. I didn't see how that fitted in with anything at all. Sure it's great for her and there were some nuggets here and there but not good TED talk and probably more misleading than anything.

dionysusnow It's about both, actually. If I ask ten people who live in the same city to tell me about where they live, I'll get ten different answers even though they're all describing the same place. Why is that? Because they're ten different people with ten different sets of experience and values. Those things filter and color everything in their lives uniquely. So yes, sometimes what someone says about you is about you, but it's still about them because 9 other people will say something different. Even when two people say the same thing about the same person, they'll still say it in different ways. So it's still about them.

Fortunately, we can save time by benefiting and learning from the lessons ("failures") of other people who are willing to share them. Yeah, I think she hit a key point. You cant wake up one day and decide you’re going to start your own business. You need to downsize your entire life for atleast 5 years. And if you think you can keep your current expenses - that are based on your current income, you are already setting yourself up for failure.

Thank you Dorothée for this reminder that I can rise and shine again :) even better

Excellent theme . Time can be your stock and trade so be careful with it. Money even if you have it may not give you independence if you feel guilty. So the best thing to learn is that the money you have is nobody’s business except your own, and probably when you do have money and independence, the most joyful moment you live will not cost you a lot of money if any. It is very true that being constantly wanting more makes you poor. Appreciate what you have, fix what breaks, do without does things you don’t need. Have compassion with others but appreciate yourself also.

As you said in your talk "people will only see things from their point of view", so please don't worry about those who call you a liar; this is just their level of awareness. You have a life experience that's worth sharing and you've helped so many by being bold enough to bring it to us, so thank you for your bravery and thank you for the sharing. Lots of gratitude.

A great video, this is what i tell my colleagues at work as they are mostly young students and this is what i learned myself also after my own life shocking moment. I feel happier now working multiple jobs and spending almost nothing then i did when i was younger and buying everything i could afford with the little money i had. By the way i like working so i work more but i dont NEED to work, big difference to someone that needs to work for money and are unhappy.

Nicely put Dorothee x Having been involved in four businesses; and enjoyed mostly, all, I feel that the experiences gathered are what is important. Appreciation, balance (something that I seldom achieve) and having fun; yes even in business has to be vital keywords. Success has to include one of the most important (jobs?) ............. That of being a Mum. More of the above please Dorothee. Be Happy x

She may lose her savings someday, too. We both work on one year contracts teaching English in Korea. She brags about how her job has kept her almost 5 years. Mine kept me just one year and before that I was unemployed 7 months.

"My impulse purchases included a car and a house" -- when will these people stop exaggerating at TED talks to impress the audience?!? A house is a purchase of investment or necessasity, not of impulse! And when she was broke, had 3 euros and change; why would she not look for a marketing job to buy her daughter that birthday cake she keeps refering to for exploiting the audience's emotions; after all she starts her talk telling that she had a successful marketing career...

Some of the people here were condemning her for "not paying taxes". The problem is that many small businesses fail... not for want of money... but because they have NO idea how complicated the government makes it for small businesses.. and the filing times are all different.. and you have to pay DOUBLE social security and medicare, and taxes on your business and yourself, and save reciepts for EVERYTHING, and file four times a year..and just when you think you have saved up some money and feeling good about what you have accomplished, it comes tax time and you find out that the state and federal government wants about 40% of what you have made --then you don't have it...then you get fined HUGE and unreasonable fines for not filing taxes you didn't even know existed at deadlines you didn't even know existed.. ---Maybe the really wealthy know all this ahead of time..or those who went to college.for a business degree..or studied super hard first...but many small business startups learn the hard way...no one gives you a book with all the crazy rules and taxes and unending deadlines...so 90% of small businesses fail and I would venture to guess that most of them fail because of the IRS...The U.S . is NOT small business friendly. I learned the hard way but it took me about three years... and two not very helpful $3000 CPA's--and lots of self-study to finally do it right... now I am doing fine. I give anyone Kudo's who got through those first three years and made it!.

Great take in summary after having such an experience. Money is time, more importantly proportionate to engagement in particular activities. It's very important to question our activities from a beneficial angle, both short term and long term to establish where we stand, projectively speaking relative to earning money and sustaining life as it's being lived.
