I've watched a minimalism video where they said it's not about depriving yourself. Minimalism is about not letting in things that are unnecessary. So as long as you get value and joy out of something, it's perfectly fine!

*side-note: although we get value and joy out of it, it's always good that we keep the environment in mind. :D

minimalism is not equal with zero-waste life style. if someone's minimalist it doesn't mean that they are not making waste. they just don't make as much as other people, because they only buy/use things they really need.
@AverageAufa
@AverageAufa 5 лет назад
I mean, preferably, for the good of the environment, we all learn to lessen our wastes. Regardless of whether we're minimalists or zero-waste.

This is good. I think a lot of people are under the impression that minimalism is about not buying things and having five shirts. But really I think it's about the things you DO have or purchase either have a defined, practical purpose, or just truly bring you joy (thank you Marie Kondo). Your lifestyle and things should serve YOU, not the other way around. It's about having what you need to function and thrive, and no more.

A great alternative to Ziplock bags are Stasher Reusable Silicone Food Storage Bags. You can buy them on Amazon. They come in three different sizes (snack, sandwich and half gallon). Another place to bring your used books is to a Free Little Library. They might only be in the US though.

I also found what is called solid shampoo that does not have parabens and lauril sulfate, and you don’t waste plastic to contain it. It’s a bar of soap but it’s made of something that makes your hair look clean and soft. Very nice for damaged hair. Cheers!

Minimalism is personal and there are no rules... you can still be a minimalist and do all of these things. It’s about picking what to minimize to spend less time on what doesn’t bring you joy or more time/money on what does. Minimalism isn’t a box to put yourself in it’s a tool to use to create the life that you want ... just wanted to put that out there :) I’ve been a minimalist for 3 years.

I'm a Minimalist and it's not going to stop me from buying ALL THE CHRISTMAS THINGS!!!!!! My house is pretty clean, open, with not many house decorations other than throw pillows and a few bits and pieces. But come Christmas time... all bets are off. I'm buying all the things. Santa throw pillows, and blankets galore. Reefs, porcelain houses, sparkly fake christmas trees, twinkle lights from ceiling to floor. You name it, I buy it. No regrets. 😉😍
@NeverStopLovingMe
@NeverStopLovingMe 5 лет назад
I normally only have very minimal decorations too - I furnished my home in a way that it looks pretty good without them for most of the year. But come Christmas time, I'm the same as you! 😋 It's a time of year that I always look forward to, and buying a few new decorations every year to expand my collection is just so amazing! I do choose quality over quantity so I can use them for years to come, but I totally buy new additions every year.

I really loved this video! Actually I love all your videos hehe. I’m on my way to trying to become more of a minimalist and video was so perfect! The diva cup is the BEST I use it and it’s helped my wallet, cramps and it’s way more convenient only having to basically change it twice a day, it feels like I don’t even have my period when I’m using it! When your body’s ready go for it!

I use a purple shampoo because I have Albinism. The shampoo makes my hair not yellow. I use all natural conditioner and ACV as a rinse. I love plants too. We eat out too, and we buy vegan remade organic food. I homecook a lot but convience is great. Minimalism is what you make of it and as long as you are organized and happy it's great. I'm A minimalst and do my best to live sustainable with what we can do.

I love the honesty in this video! Especially as someone who is trying to be more minimal and aware of my effect on the environment! It's so discouraging sometimes to watch videos of people who have it all figured out and everything is picture perfect and planned. It's nice to see someone who is on a journey, still figuring things out, and is being true to who they are!

Hey Sarah, if you tend to eat out more, and you take your leftovers back home with you... it will feel really weird at first but take Tupperware container or beeswax wrap (which is re-usable) with you and ask them to pack your food in there. It will help the environment and I thought it was a great idea when I heard this.

I love how honest this video is! The most discouraging part about trying to practice minimalism is extreme material testimonies where they suggest that if you're not fully getting rid of all your things, then you're not really intending on living a minimalist lifestyle. I haven't been able to explore your channel fully, but I'm curious on how you practice minimalism with children (clothes, toys, books, crafting materials)? Most of the minimalist individuals I've come across are single, which makes it so much easier for them to not have a lot of things. Hope all is well!

I grew up in a household that was quite the opposite of minimalist. I have found that having so much stuff makes me feel trapped and cluttered. I am a college student who lives in a very small apartment. I am currently starting the journey towards minimalism. When I made this decision, I didn't even know where to start. Your videos are helping me get past that block and get the courage to start. It's helped me realize I don't have to change everything at once, but that I can take it one area of my home at a time and that it isn't wrong to keep the things that you truly enjoy (such as supplies for my favorite art form) so long as they bring positive things into your life and do not cause clutter or distraction from what life should be about. Minimalism is a slow journey which makes it much easier to start and commit to. It's about only keeping around the things that bring you joy and hold true value. Thank you for your helpful videos!

Thank you for making this video. To me, minimalism is of course about quality and being content with less stuff but at the same time there’s the balance of keeping the things that bring you joy and add value to your life. Even if they may not be best price or for the environment, or whatever reason, no one should have to sacrifice what brings value and joy just to have the title “minimalist.” That lifestyle looks different for everyone so I really respect the fact that you still keep some of these items in your life

Don't know if this helps, but maybe takes some of the guilt out of not using coconut oil for everything 😊. Coconut oil is an emollient and somewhat occlusive, it doesn't moisturise the skin. A moisturiser should have hummectants, emollients and occlusives in it to really work properly. On the face coconut oil is comedodogenic, which is not great. On hair it can build up and make it heavy if used in excess. So, even though it is a great oil it isn't a do it all product 😁 There's a very nice dermatologist on RU-vid that has a video about the pro and cons of coconut oil, her name is Dr Dray 😁

Menstrual cups are the best! I wouldn’t recommend a Diva specifically though, just because they don’t actually suit many body types and put many women off. There are loads of RU-vid videos out there which can help you to determine which one is best for you, Precious Stars Pads is a good channel. I switched 7 years ago and I’ve never looked back! I use a Super Jennie (and apparently they suit a wide range body types) but there are so many to choose from!

Girl, being a reader, I completely agree on the book idea. I love pages, the smell...🥰😀

So nice to hear about someone mixing fabric diapers with the disposable ones and making it work. This is really one of the things that breaks my heart about having children, all the disposable diapers that you will use. It feels super nice not using tampons and pads, and going back to that mountain of plastic waste is not appealing.

minimalism is personal, and i believe that even when we try to cut down on our purchases an belongings, we can still indulge ourselves and buy things that make us happy. its not a competition to see who can get by with less stuff, its a personal journey to being a more aware consumer and owner and human being :) its nice to see that youre not going too far too fast with this like some people do, its absolutely important to let yourself have nice things as long as they bring you joy!

I HATE digital books. It takes away from the whole reading essential. Besides, I read books to ESCAPE the screen, not to put my head in a screen again. And, it's not good for your eyes, especially blue light. I get that people nowadays want everything easy, quick and as small as possible so you can take it wherever you want. But to me, it's weird as shit. I love physical books, especially the smell, and like you said the feel of the book, the pages, the weight of it in your hands. I'm 21 and I always feel like I'm born in the wrong time period. I absolutely hate the digital world, and I don't use any social media. The only things I use are youtube, email and WhatsApp. But my phone is actually just meant for pictures and music. I don't have any friends of my age that likes reading books, doing jigsaw puzzles, playing board games, drawing and painting. Nobody cares about "real" things anymore, everyone is sucked into this unhealthy digital world. When I deleted all my social media a year ago, I lost a lot of contact with people. That's because the only way to get contact with people nowadays, is through a social media post, or a picture, or a quick dm. I'm glad I lost contact with those people, if you can't give me the time of day or contact me without social media, you are not worth my time. Sorry for my rant, I'm just sick and tired or people using 'kindle' or an eReader when most people wouldn't pick up a book if their life depends on it. They all pretend to read all of a sudden, but when talking about actual books, the conversation comes to an end real quick. Everyone can and does read online, but there's an extreme difference between readers and people who read things online and say they are reading. Thanks for this video, sorry for my rant, think I needed it

Nikki Evers I don’t know what your hometown or full situation is like but I am 22 and my friends are all around that age and we have board game nights all the time, have attended painting classes together, go to beach/outside, and most of us read. And we still have social media. I don’t know, maybe try researching groups or events in your community, because you never know what may be in your area. My friend just joined a chess club at the local rec center. But part of my point is nothing has to be one or the other. Social media can be a tool for fun and good if used correctly. I’m currently in an online book club and it’s been super fun so far. I’m sorry you feel out of place but I promise there r still people out there who enjoy the real too. On the digital book thing, I used to feel similar and then I tried it myself and downloaded the kindle app on my phone. I read more now bc of it. I don’t have to remember an extra thing or put more weight in my backpack I can just click it out whenever I want. It prevents me from scrolling Facebook as much too when I’m bored or waiting. I like physical books too, but again it does not have to be one or the other and as long as people are reading what’s the harm. Most book devices also look like paper at this point and you can download blue blocker things on your screens to help with your eyes, so it’s all good. Idk if any of this info helps or makes u feel like the world isn’t all people stuck to their phones but anyways, I hope you find your niche.

@@logicandcrazy hi! Thanks for your comment and thinking with me, I appreciate it. I don't think we live in the same country, I'm from the Netherlands, Europe. I think it's great and lovely that you and your friends get to do that! But in my country, everything is either really expensive, or not intended for people over a certain age. We do have some sort of hobby center's, but those are intended for little kids. If we want to do those things, you'll either be joining a course which costs a lot of money, or you need to organize something yourself. So what I usually do is buy boardgames, fun things like clay and paint etc. myself and randomly ask over a friend of mine. Unfortunately, they always want to go out and "get drunk", they don't like the things I do. Or I'll play board games with my family, but to be honest, you sometimes like to do things with people your age you know.. But again, thanks for your tips! And about the social media, unfortunately it is either one or the other for me. I have been bullied my entire life, and the last years of my life it also turned into cyberbullying. Even after that, I tried social media because I don't "run away" from my problems. But when I noticed how incredibly selfish, arrogant, annoying, narcissistic and horrible people were on social media, and the numerous discussions I was sucked into daily, it actually made me mentally ill (more than I already was). I was under constant stress the entire time, I was constantly focusing on the wrong things, my priorities weren't straight anymore and I wasted my time and energy almost daily. Since I've deleted them (facebook, instagram, snapchat) I've become much more calm, don't spend that much time on my phone, and I'm less stressed. I get your point, but not everything is as simple as you think, especially when you don't know the entire story. I can honestly say social media ruined a big part of my life, and that's MY experience. I'm glad I'm not on it anymore, so to me, social media isn't a big deal. Maybe it is for some, but to me, social media isn't a great or good thing, but hell. I appreciate your message, but this is how I live my life and I'm glad I have got a lot of life experience at this age so I have MY priorities straight. People can do whatever they want and like, but this is my opinion and how I live my life. So I hope people let me do what I want as well. Social media has benefits for lots of people, but not for me, and I'm fine with that.

The digital world isn’t just bad. They are pros and con.. I find throught social media (Facebook) a lot of childhood friends, and they found me. I have contact with people all over the world. And I‘m sure more than you. I read a lot on kindle (no blue light) its extremely calming and sometimes I just want a little handbag with me, and a big fat book wouldn’t fit and the weight to carry all day..? I even find family through Facebook I didn’t know I have. Facebook is the only social media platform that you need to enter your real name.. I think its greate and no I study I‘m not a lot on the internet.. the most ist like 5 hour bc of my university.

@@stefanigreeneyes listen, I explained in my comment above yours why I don't use social media. I get that it's great for some, but to me it's a burden. I have my reasons for that. I suggest you read my comment first. You can have your opinion on it, and I can have mine. I don't have to argue with everyone or defend myself as to why I have this opinion, this is what it is. No its not all bad, I never said that. But to ME, it is. So either accept my opinion or leave

My mom has a kindle paperwhite and it's actually pretty nice for reading, no blue light or eye strain or anything like that. I still prefer physical books but in a lot of situations it's simply not practical to carry a heavy 1000 page book around with you. So it's a good thing we have different options nowadays. I'm sure there's plenty of people your age who enjoy the same hobbies as you, it's just harder to meet people who like doing "indoor stuff" than people with "social" hobbies like drinking ;-)

Man I needed this lol. Mom of two. Work full time. Husband works like 80hr/will. I manage all the house work, cooking and family schedule. Plus school part time. So yea. I'm not going to stop eating out occasionally. I'm not going to stop purchasing things which save me time or make my life easier.

I know this is an older post, but would you be able to do a video on sustainable products, what "sponges" you use, do you do tin foil and zip locks? Etc. Also cloth diapers! What kind do you use and how do you clean them? I feel so overwhelmed with all the info out there!

Just would like to say... I started using a diva cup in the 6th grade on my second or third cycle. I recommend it for anyone, I still have my first one and there is no telling how much time and money I’ve saved. They’re easy and not scary at all to use, for anyone wondering.

It's so reassuring to hear that you're still on your journey too! I'm trying to incorporate so many things from minimalism every day, but it doesn't happen overnight. I used a menstrual cup for almost a year, and sadly it didn't work for me. I know exactly how to insert it and take it out, no problems with technique, but I'm prone to UTIs, and I had a lot more and usually after my period when I was using a menstrual cup. It just triggered it so much I had to stop using it. I'm pregnant now and really enjoy not having periods at the moment, but after I have the baby I'll buy some nice cloth pads from the same lady who I'll buy the cloth diapers from :)

I think you're doing so well with minimalism! And I think it's important to remember that a lot of minimalists you see on blogs and on RU-vid are in their early 20's with no kids. Which is most of why they can have one jacket and a laptop to their name 😂. kids need books to turn the pages of and learn to respect, they need toys to play with and learn to put away. Minimalism is about keeping what you use and/or what gives you joy. So buy those flowers that give you joy to see! Eat out once in a while to treat yourself and your husband! Live life and love the stuff you have without guilt! ❤

Not sure if you have heard of these before but Stasher Bags are a really good alternative to zip loc bags!!! They are made of silicone and you can put them in the dishwasher. They are also awesome if you want to cut up veggies and fruit and want them to last longer since its airtight and won't get your food moldy! :) you can use them for anything like sandwiches, fruits, soups even!!!

I'm a minimalist too but I still eat out once a month, buy certain frozen foods like veges so I don't have to worry about spoiling, shampoo/conditioner, and buy moisturizers although I prefer only 1 kind at a time. It's ok to buy/keep what gives us value, we use these things, it's not like it's just collecting dust.

Great video. I'm soon to be mama of two and I agree completely with you. It's sometimes frustrating to see minimalists videos from people living by then selfs and living in cities with bulkstores, everything sound so easy for them. My struggle is to find organic food without packaging, where I live the stores packages all organic vegetables 😒. I also feel that books is great to have, not only for reeding but it's also nice to have in a house to kind of show personality. I love to go through people's books shelf's ☺️. I switched to menstrual cups some years ago and it's great. I don't like it but I don't like tampons either..but just a tip, after having kids it's harder to get them to "hold" if you know what I mean. I had to try some different brands and sices before finding a cup that worked for me. PS. Congratulations to you and your family! What a lovely baby!

When you’re post partum and bleeding out don’t buy pads but get reusable ones I use them regularly but I’m sure they make big ones for post partum and it’s better for the environment

Bravo! This was a breath of fresh air. Sane and balanced, instead of mildly obsessive. One suggestion: you don't need a pretty, but rather apologetic, shrug or smile at the end of stating what it is you will continue to buy. You owe no apologies. Just tell your truth. Truly, I really enjoyed this a lot. Would you be so kind as to post your supplier for the natural purple shampoo? Many thanks.
