I'd like to provide a data point: Like humans, the level of intelligence will vary with the individual. :D One time the vet looked down at my Moe and said "There's only enough room in that head for speed and love." He wasn't wrong. :)

If any1 thinks it Doesn't take some smarts to be able to track & catch a fast-moving prey animal (or, better, a tossed toy), at Speed, I'd say: Try to Program a Robot do it. It's Not Easy. --- To all presenters / creators of RU-vid videos, here are a few TIPS on "How to the Get Best Audio for your video": 1. Get the Microphone as Near to each speaker's Mouth as Possible The Thorium Community has a Terrific documentary Filmmaker in Canada (YT channel: Gordon McDowell ), who travels the World capturing talks, panel discussions, debates, etc. on New Nuclear Reactors (eg, Safe, Small, Green, Liquid-Fuel, MSR = Molten Salt Reactors, due ~2030). He's perfected the art of capturing Great Audio, eg, by clipping a tiny MP3+Recorder to each speaker's lapel(s). He use 1 or 2 tiny (slightly-modified = a free firmware upgrade) devices. The result is: Even in a fairly Noisy place (eg, busy restaurant, etc. if Not an extremely noisy disco), a speaker's voice is heard Way Above the Noise. Even in a Home, Office or less noisy Auditorium, getting the mics near the mouth can keep room echos & other distractions out of the soundscape of your YT video. If you don't want to "scare" would-be viewers away before you win due credit for their having been attracted to your videos, keep the mic close to speakers' mouths, so it's easy to listen & hear them. Many TED talks show the presenter wearing a head-mounted "boom mic'" Their voices are crystal-clear, & I've only seen 1 case where it was at all problematic (Cf "Letting go of God" by Julia Sweeney; also on RU-vid; view it also for its Humor) 2. Better to Speak Slowly & Be Easily Understood Compare these 2 TED talks: (faster pace) RU-vid: "Thorium: Kirk Sorensen at TEDxYYC" Enjoy Kirk's Passion; miss a bit when he "speeds-up" (slower pace) RU-vid: "Pedersen TEDxCopenhagen" Subtle Danish hints of passion; you may take more info home --- I hope this helps... :~)

My grey is offleash all the time, always comes and obeys. You have to spend the time teaching thats all. I dont buy expensive food, it's fine, just have to find the right thing. I use Nature's Recipe dog food. My dog goes out twice a day, and could easily do 1 I'd bet. If he's pooping that much the food is wrong.

Never muzzle your greyhound. Instead train them properly with a leash. Never sign a contract and let pretentious people like this tell you what you can or cannot do with your dog. Find another adoption group. There are plenty around if you look. Feel free to train your greyhound, form a strong relationship and have them off leash in reasonable situations. Any dog can have a high prey driver, don't list to this ignorant person.

The idea that you can't let a greyhound off the lead is not fair on the dog. I homed a greyhound 4 yrs ago who has a really high prey drive. However it's something that I manage. Greyhounds are born to run and it's lovely to see them run and play with other dogs. Firstly I use a muzzle to prevent him from catching rabits, deer etc. Secondly I choose where to let him off the lead i.e. away from livestock. No off the lead time for a greyhound is no quality of life for them.

Not true. I know a couple of people who have adopted ex-racing greyhounds. Both bitches and who were gentle and had fab natures. Both never won races but were placed numerous times but were then "discarded". After a period of settling in and taken for walks, both were determined they did not have that "drive for chasing". They walk off lead to this day and have both been trained to a recall - never had any problems.
@tonichealthacademy7587

Total poo about them not being able to be off lead. Assess your own dog, many can if they're trained properly.

I walk with my greyhound off the lead all the time, it really depends on the dog. My dog did 70 races on the track but the prey drive down is a trate of any hound. Mine hound has a super high prey drive, but I walk him on farm fields everyday, I just have to watch out for rabbits and squirrels!
@leonischmid1375
@leonischmid1375 4 года назад
Hi I had 3 greyhounds. None off them could walk off leash. Do you do any training? Because my dogs see the rabbits before I see them. They have a really high hunting drive and they smell them. They also look constantly for animals when we walk. For me it seems impossible to let them off the leash. Doesn't your hound run away when he sees them? I am very interested and would love to let them off leash because they need to run otherwise mine aren't fully occupied. And there are no dog areas around.
@lachlanmorrison1199
@lachlanmorrison1199 4 года назад
@@leonischmid1375 yeah I did a bit of training but nothing formal. We start off going to enclosed paddocks and every time we came back when I called him a gave him a small treat. Then once I was confident ish with that i took him to enclosed footpaths or parks and did the same. Then just kept getting bigger and bigger until he now walks entirely off the lead. It's hard to spot the rabbits first, but I suppose it depends where you walk, I find large open fields good, because i have a good line of sight and can recall him for corners ect. I've had limited success recalling him if he has spotted a rabbit before me but you have to be super quick and break the trance before they run off. It takes time, but it is possible!

@snakecharmerism
@snakecharmerism 4 года назад
@@lachlanmorrison1199 that's exactly how I did it although being inner city swap enclosed paddocks for enclosed basketball courts, then enclosed dog parks (they are tiny in london), small parks then the big parks and canal paths. Ditto with breaking the prey drive trance, can snap her out of it and get recall but needs to be done fast..that said I'm not bothered about her getting rats and squirrels, just the risk of killing a cat or chasing one into the road. No cats in big parks, so that just leaves the risk of the odd encounter with a canal boat cat. Funny story I came across a group of boaters by the canal under a tree where one of their kittens had climbed up 20 feet and was stuck on a branch and couldn't get down. I tied up hound and climbed up and managed to get the kitten and was half way down when it ran down the rest of the tree and jumped straight towards the dog. Dog lunged at the kitten and missed it by about a foot thankfully. Could have been a very different story...Man throws kitten from tree to feed dog!

Hi, I keep hearing that you cannot let a greyhound off the leash, but they do need to run every once in a while, right? So how do you deal with that? I´m considering adopting one, but there are no fenced dog parks where I live and I don´t have a garden, so I don´t think it would be as good of an idea for me as I thought when I started researching the dogs.

I have a lurcher (greyhound x Labrador) who’s just turned 5, he is my life, because he’s a greyhound cross and he has a low pray drive as we live with two cats we let him off lead but it does all depend on the dog and the adoption company. He is such a gentle sweetheart who just wants cuddles and love. The most annoying thing is how much attention they want ❤️😂, they are needy and so loving. I honestly couldn’t imagine life without him.

Fence your yard cuz u can let them run...although u don't need to let them run as long as u leash walk. Sensitive belly is not a big deal. Feed them what they ate @ their rescue. We never muzzled once home. As for prey drive, ours were small animal tested as we told rescue we had cats. Separation anxiety is cuz they are raised & raced in kennels. Take them out on leash every 2 hrs whether u think they need to pee or not & praise any pee pee or poo poo outside. Took us less than 24 hrs to train ours. You will never know a better love!

Cyndi D not everyone is that easy! I’ve had fosters that pooped in the house for weeks, even with frequent potty trips, I’ve had cat safe fosters take chunks out of my kitties nose, I’ve had separation anxiety with 2+ greys in the house at the same time. I’ve had the exact opposite of all of this too!! It all matters on the dog, each is their own special case. :)

Okay friends, just to keep in mind; THIS IS BASED OFF OF MY EXPERIENCE. I have seen a lot of comments in regards to walking greyhounds off leash, I completely understand that some people some places can have different experiences, but due to the history of the breed and their tendencies I have been taught to never walk them off leash. It is okay if you have heard / learned different!! It is just my experience. Also. I am not complaining about my dogs by any means, i love them to pieces and they are the best thing that has happened to me. Thank you for all the sweet lovely comments, I’ll be uploading more soon hopefully as we’ve adopted a second!!

I totally agree with you. I had 3 greyhounds. None of them could walk off leash. They like to hunt so badly. I let them run in my garden. With one of them it was possible to let him off leash for a bit in areas which are animal low but he had a very low hunting drive. Of course you can work with them but one time my dog jumped off my balcony which is 2m high just because he saw a cat. Luckily he had no injuries at all but it is very dangerous to let them off leach. Of course some might have no hunting drive. But I am really surprised when I see a greyhound off leash because I just can't imagine that with mine. If anybody has some recommendations I am very interested :)

I also think people who have greyhounds, especially ones that have raced before, need to be aware that they will probably be extremely food orientated. when the greyhounds raced, they usually would be with other dogs in small kennels and there would be a competition for food. So when they get adopted, they aren't used to having food all to themselves. so they will often try and go for other peoples food as they feel as if they need to fight for it to survive. Often, greyhounds being adopted are previous racing greyhounds who did badly in races, so they never received any special treatment from their owners as they didn't win. So just beware to shut your cupboards, and your bins! I am speaking from personal experience but have talked to many owners who have had the same experience as me :)

@mindtpi
@mindtpi 5 лет назад
It's the law in lots of places, plus they have a strong prey drive and if a small animal they don't know runs away from them, there's a chance they will take off after it, so better safe than sorry. It's not to stop them biting people or anything like that, they're not aggressive at all.

In Australia, we have a program called Greenhounds. It retrains Greyhounds to limit their prey drive and legally allows them go roam around muzzle-free when in an off-leash area.
@bombygriz

Fellow grey owner here. Your point about food being pricey is correct BUT please look into switching from grain-free food. DCM is a horrible heart condition and many of our greys are dropping dead much too early from it thanks to the grain-free/limited ingredient food trend. It's best to stick with brands that align with the WSAVA guidelines. They do not name specific companies but a list of things to look for when choosing foods. Our grey does great on ProPlan, some of them need the sensitive stomach blend due to tummy issues but others do fine on the plain meat/rice blends.

Some really good points. Id add to it they are very strong dogs. Much stronger than i expected from their slight frame. Mine has penchant for pulling the leash and with bk injury his behaviour is particulary painful. He is with training getting much better but its a work in progress. I had alsatian in the past strong enough to pull a wee sledge in winter and to my surprise the greyhound we adopted is not far from that level of strenght. He spent 7 years racing in Macau and he just cant get enough of the outside world so i cant blame him for his curiosity really. Greyhound did not get the memo about being sleepy lazyboi and he talks..a lot. He'll whine to join in on conversation whine because service is too slow and he wants his food right now whine because he saw a cat and has to leave the house asap with one of his hoomans on super urgent business 😂 he ll sleep but not all day he will want to play min 20 min after each walk. Ah and he will walk as long as you ll let him. He did not get the two 20min waljs a day only memo. He goes out for 2-3 long walks and few 5 min walks whenever he needs them.

The greyhounds’ owner was visiting family that summer and was very kind to me but I’m sure it was annoying. Now that I live in a warm climate, I’m hoping to get a greyhound. Thanks for all the info!

Getting in trouble for letting a greyhound off the lead in stupid. Of course be responsible about it ..... but not to the detriment of the dogs happiness. I work as a dog walker and the greyhounds I walk will chase deer but I a) muzzle them b) they always come back, usually within 10 minutes.

Never off leed? Ever hear of lure coursing? If the dog has accepted you, they will return to you after running the course. Muzzle when out, why? They aren't dangerous and live to be with people and small children. Super expensive food? Good quality, yes, 22% protein, grain free no. You have no idea what some of these dogs are fed daily. You have a long way to go and are posting half truths. Having had over 30 fosters, I think I'm ahead of the curve.

Absolutely we have, but it’s not something that is insanely common here and very expensive. I don’t worry about leash walking because it’s not really that big of a continence. We simply muzzle them together when they are off leash in a large area to make sure to prevent injuries (nothing crazy, just scrapes and bumps they may get while playing. Expensive is a loose term, but it’s not like the food is cheap, and that’s something people to know!! I do know what they’re fed, trust me. I appreciate your input, and I fully understand having a ways to go; we all do in things we are interested and passionate about!! But I think that belittling someone who you don’t know on the internet because of a video they are equally passionate about is a little silly. You obviously are here because you were looking to learn more too. And I hope you got that :)

This video is lovely and thank you for championing the greyhound (they need it) although I would say the never letting a grey hound off leash comment concerns me a bit, if you have a rescue yes your right you can’t just let them off untrained and take taking risk but you owe it to them to find local areas where they can run RUNNING is when you see these awesome dogs display pure joy, dog parks enclosed fields or areas that a big but fenced in are a absolute must, we’re in the uk and while obviously where you guys are the focus is on not letting them off ,here you would struggle to adopt if you couldn’t prove ample safe running / playing space is available !

What the hell does thin skin have to do with wearing muzzle and going for a walk? You never completed the thought.
@silviadee645
@silviadee645 3 года назад
Plastic basket muzzle: it allows you to “mould” it and adapt it to their particular shaped “noses” avoiding friction injuries in the upper part and the lower part of their mouth because it doesn’t touch it at all. A soft muzzle goes around the mouth of the dog and that would easily burn the skin of a greyhound, that is particularly thin and sensitive. Summing it all up: my guess is that she meant that if you seem appropriate for your greyhound to wear a muzzle when being out for a walk, because of their soft skin the basket muzzle would allow them to move their mouth freely without harming themselves and, the one that shows made of plastic is even better to them and softer to their skin

I think it matters on the dog!! Lots of places will small animal train before you adopt, our boy is a little quick around small dogs but our girl could care less. We just feel more comfortable keeping a bucket muzzle since they still have that natural instinct!!

Just wondering, with greyhound racing dying out, who will breed them just as pets? The racing is a nasty business but what will happen to the breed?
@monicafranklin7811
@monicafranklin7811 5 лет назад
the number of greyhounds bred if racing them stops will depend on supply and demand. there will be some people who carry it on not as many as now. the italian greyhound is much smaller than these so it is likely those will continue the way they are now.
@gregb2428
@gregb2428 4 года назад
The breed existed long before they were raced and will live on long after racing is gone, Greyhounds are mentioned in the bible (Proverbs 30:29-31, King James Version) SO all this rubbish about without racing there would be no greys is just that rubbish.

They won't disappear but obviously there'll be a lot less of them. Dog racing in Australia is not going to close down any time soon.
@forlornhope7121
@forlornhope7121 3 года назад
Good question. They are breed to retain the healthy qualities both in nature and body. Racing industry demands it. Hence the greyhound is currently preserved. But there are many examples of breeding for show or pets that have lead to poor nature's, spread of genetic conditions (hip dysplasia for example,) brought on by unregulated breeding . German shepherds, border Collies, kelpies are just three examples. Racing has proved to be able to humanely be managed. Look at Sth Australia, Greyhound Racing for yourselves. It doesn't need to be destructive or inhumane. Perhaps knee jerk reactions should be reconsidered in a calmer light

Stacy Jason don't bet on it. We've had one since a puppy and guess what he's nine years old and he still a puppy. We call them land sharks when they're that young they'll chew every corner off of every table and chair. We have had eight over many years ,six are ashes on my mantle piece and I still have two with us.
