I was in a very depressed state and forgotten how to smile due to some very tragic experiences in my life. One day I met a burnese puppy in my apartment elevator. That was the first time after 6 months I genuinely felt happy and laughed!! ❤❤

It's sad that you need to explain that it isn't bad for him to live in an apartment. A dog is absolutely not interested if he is living in a huge house with garden or in a caravan with 8 m². The main thing is that the dog is getting attention and having the chance to run and make brain exercises till he is tired and then the dog needs a pillow or a place on the floor, nothing more. You're doing it great, Benny looks like a happy dog and that is what counts, that the dog is happy too, not only the humans.

@@danceswithcarsdc BMD are very gppd guard dogs without being too agressive about it. if you have a farm like us, a BMD will absolutely bark at strangers - ours outright hated salesmen and litterally caged them in their own cars as they refused to come out and instead called us on the phone. however they are very friendly to persons they either know or are greeted friendly by their owners, to the point where our neighbours could visit us and he didnt react at all since he knew their car and their smell.

My girlfriend and I have a 1 year old berner. We used to live in a townhouse and all she ever wanted to do was go outside so we decided we needed to get a house with a yard for her. We fenced the yard so that she could have free reign whenever she wanted to go outside, but she really only wants to go outside if we are also outside. She doesn't care where she is as long as we are with her.

I just want to emphasize, that you should only get a berner when the climate you live in is not too hot. Those are furry mountain dogs, most comfortable in temperatures below 10°C. They prefer being in the snow. They have their own opinion, and have a natural sense to guard (but basically they just want to greet everyone, not actually guard). So don't be surprised if they do their own thing if they are bored. They are family dogs, they love their family, and no matter how heavy they get, they will always be lap dogs, and are super friendly to everyone. Be prepared for a lot of heat and no personal space. But they are absolutely adorable. I love bernese mountain dogs. Greetings from Switzerland. :-)
@schoggikuacha1166
@schoggikuacha1166 4 года назад
@@danceswithcarsdc Well trimming is a controversial topic. Here in Switzerland they do not recommend it. Berners have 2 layers, the topcoat is for water resistance, dirt protection etc. and the underlaying, wooly coat is for the temperature regulations. so trimming the topcoat doesn't make sence, and trimming the under fur can actually cause it to grow stronger back, therefore start matting. and berners regulate heat by panting. so by trimming actually leave them endangered to sunburns, getting wet and sick, but dont help them regulate heat, as they can't sweat like humans do. there are also some evidence that by trimming the fur can fall out, or doesn't grow back properly. the only thing that really helps is to brush out the under fur every second day, especially when they are shedding.
@Genesis23OPB
@Genesis23OPB 4 года назад
@@danceswithcarsdc agree with the other person that i dont recommend it at all. the Berner Sennenhund loses too long fur by himself and regulates temperature like every other dog as well. ours love to bathe in small rivers to help cool down too.

Yeah, after having 2 male BMD, both were mother-hens. Love kids, and offsprings of other animals as well. And socialize also with strangers. Neighborhood kids came to ask our dog for a walk, sometimes had to say that come to play in the garden with him instead, because these kids had their head about same height as the dog's. And can't give dog to so young kids no matter how well behaving he is.

When we lost Gunnar shortly after our our granddaughter was born we got Miss Gabby our 1st female. Best dog in the world, so great with our human baby even when she was in pain from a weird genetic ailment. And yea they do need a job during the day like following you around everywhere and flipping your hands off the keyboard, and they need to exercise, but like a lot of large breeds they prefer to flop around after they’ve done their duty, as close to you as possible of course. Our BMD used to lead us with her teeth gently to bed when she was tired. They are heartbreakers and characters for sure!

3 years a pup, 3 years an adult and 3 years an OAP...any longer is a blessing. I've wanted a berner for 30 odd years, ever since a customer on my milk round, who had 5, and I got "attacked" on my first day...the fear when they charged towards me that so quickly changed to affection got me hooked and I carried biscuits with me every day after that 😂 It's never been the right time for me to have a dog though. But now as I'm older things have changed and I'm going be looking at rescuing to one to go with my 4 cats. Gonna enjoy watching yours, and 100's of others, till then. I know of plenty of berners who are much healthier on a raw diet. Even know of some living to 12-15 that were just fed tripe their whole life.

This race is the answer for people wanting a permanent puppy that's upscaled 10 times and lives for 10 years :D I had a Golden from 2002 to 2015 too. These are very nice too. Also sheds heavily. Mixing dark and bright dogs could lead to interesting amounts of shed on your clothes xD At least with a golden you can wear bright clothes and vice versa with Berner (dark clothes). If you have both, you can't fix it, you will ALWAYS end up with dog hair clearly visible on your clothes.

I saved up my $ and found a great breeder that has 13 year old berners (no promises). Leonardo has been the absolute best! His breeder called him out as a therapy dog so that's what I trained him (and me) to be. (Google "leonardo therapy dog" and his website should pop up. He's out of work right now but doesn't understand the social distancing. I should make videos but I still work, "essential". Plus I can't stand haters and cyber trolls. I love your videos. I’ve always been fascinated by this breed, they immediately put a smile on my face whenever I see them. My vet has only owned BMD’s. They must be really special if people buy them knowing that they don’t live as long. After my chow passed away I got a little dog because I wanted a friend who would live a long time. However I miss having a big dog in bed with big snuggles, and I miss having a dog that would enjoy the outdoors and hiking. My little dog is terrified of being in the woods with me. Dogs bring so much joy, it might be worth it getting another one, especially since I’m working from home right now.

Benny seems like a happy dog :) Our bernie spent his first 1,5 year in an apartment, and it's really no issue (apart from when the power went out, and the elevator stopped working, and I had to carry him down 4 flights of stairs, lol), as long as they get plenty of time outside. Our boy has just passed 2,5 years of age, and has started calming down significantly the past 2-3 months. It's really noticeable. This is great! I have been thinking about getting a Bernese Mountain Dog in a couple of years, and have been wondering one thing if you don't mind me asking! How long are you able to leave and come back, depending on the age I suppose. I understand it might be better, if someone was to be gone for a good bit of the day, to leave him in a dog daycare type place, but I was just curious as to what someone who has had experience with the breed might think? I would definitely make time for the majority of at least the first year to spend bonding with him, but say I get a busier job after that, what might be the best bet? Perhaps I hold off? I'd appreciate a response, but no worries! Thanks!

@@jessicamyers9557 - Hi Jessica! I'd say that with a whole lot of proper training, it should be possible to leave a bernie for 5-6 hours. Our boy has a fair bit of separation anxiety, but we're now to the point where we can leave him home for the ~4 hours each day that me and my SO's working hours overlap, and he's been home alone 5-6 hours a few times. I would caution you, though, that every dog is an individual, and you never quite know how a dog is going to deal with being alone... Bernese Mountain Dogs were bred originally as farm working dogs in the Canton Berne in Switzerland. They were used for herding cows and for pulling small carts. When I grew up in 1950s Switzerland, you didn't buy milk in the supermarket. The milkman came every day and you put out special coins (milk money) together with a dedicated milk kettle. Our milkman had a cart with a milk urn pulled by a Bernese Mountain Dog named Barry. The dog absolutely loved his job.

I have learned with my currently three Labrador Retrievers that I absolutely have to start the day with an hour and a half walk in order to reduce their energy levels to civilized proportions. I have had 15 month old Mossy since she was born. When we are all out on a walk, she loves to come back and sit on my foot and lean up against my leg. When I'm sitting down in a folding chair out in the field, she likes to jump up with all her hundred pounds or so into my lap and either sit there for a while or else immediately jump down to mix it up with the other dogs.

I was looking for another pound puppy and found a “Bernese “ a year later she is missing about 100lbs and not a Bernese but it’s okay once I saw that they have a short life span and that would kill. I haven’t been able to have children and my girls are my kids so not having them, I just can’t. But i love watching your fur baby.

It appears that you have plenty of room. The way I have heard that it is is that you have a large place for a Bernie run, play, stretch their legs. You just taught me that they are not long distance dogs, but rather short distance which saddened me. Looking for one for a therapy pooch so a Bernie has jumped up top of my list. Great video! Thx!

Most of the traits you describe sound so much like my own dog (not a bmd). She is a BGS (Bayerischer Gebirgsschweißhund) and all the things you described (like loving people, strangers, laying on top of you, jumping on park benches etc.) sound so much like her. She is such a couch potato and doesn't even want to move a lot all day.

I have an adorable 15 month old Bernese Mountain Dog. What is unique about these dogs is that she is just like a child more than she is like a dog.When I tell her I love her, she smiles. She seems to understand words more than any other dog I have ever had. She is so the best!! She's my little 100 lbs baby!!!

Even some of the biggest breeds, like Great Danes and Newfoundlands, can make perfect apartment dogs. I don’t think the size matters as much as the energy (and willing/able to provide an outlet for that energy) and temperament. 😊

I have had Golden Retrievers growing up. It took about 2 years for them to settle down. As I got older I adopted rescue dogs. They all were great. One was 4 and the other 8. I now have Emmett who is now 8 adopted at 4. He is a Golden Retriever Great Pyrenees. He is also a 90 pounder.

know that one scene with a border collie Devon running in circles, from a movie with Tom Hanks? thats my bernese in our garden at times. she gets tired quickly after it, but she can repeat it several times a day. she isnt annoying unless shes active and can slack off under the table if she tags along to my coffee. however, if she gets the opportunity to hike, she can go on for a long time :D

They are big yes, but are the most gentle babies ever! Mine is 11 months, and his father was brought from Switzerland and his family grow very big. All they want is attention 😂😂 Mine loves giving hugs and licking toes for some reason. They think they are tiny puppies. Also, mine was extremely quick to house train (took less than a week id say)

My brother has had 3 berners , they have all been incredible with the best personalites. Who cares if you have a bernese dogs in an apartment. Drives me crazy when people say that. As long as they get out and get exercise , thats whats matters. Can clearly see that you love your dog, which is probably the most important thing. Take care

They are really sweet and cute. I know small places may make them feel trapped for luck of space. Also be careful with temperatures inside the apartment or house, because of their think fur coat they can get over heated and can suffer a heart attack or stroke. Remember they are alps dogs,and they love cold weather and they don't do well in hot weather. Other than that, they are just beautiful dogs. I love them!

I had Burmese mountain dog 🐕 named Fritz. He was about 160 to 180 pounds normally, except during the winter he was around 220+. This one lady my dad me had one almost 300 pounds. So I think only purebred average around 120. But if there not pure, they can get significantly bigger. Amazing dogs, very friendly, loving and energetic. Even at 10 years old he still acted like he was 4. I really miss mine since he passed away. He was almost 12. But definitely getting another one when we get a house.

I once read that BMDs are actually the best (big) dogs to get when you live in an apartment. They're couch potatoes and are fine with having space to unwind when they do go outside.

I have a 10 month old Bernese. So much shared here is on point. Super smart, sweet and stubborn. 😂 It’s as if it’s a person who wanted to reincarnate as a dog. I feed my Bernese fresh dog food. He’s developed a hive like rash on his belly recently that I think came from products the groomer uses. We also have dry winter weather right now. Are there canine skin supplements anyone here uses that they like? I’m trying to figure out what’s recently caused this rash.

Everyone loves Bernese Mountain Dogs. I have 2 now, and had 2 before these ones. I feel sorry for all the Bernese dogs everywhere that live their lives left alone all day just waiting for some food and attention and years of wearing a leash for their daily walk (especially in urban areas on concrete sidewalks). Horrible life in an apartments and downtown condos for this breed. If that's your situation I'm sure to get some haters from my shared thoughts here. This video has so many clips of "as I have read/researched" its amazing how many people found this to be useful intel to make their decision to buy a Bernese.

Btw - If you walk him and play with him as clearly you do, you're giving him exercise, and play, and mental stimuli, then it does not matter if you're in an apartment. Those negative comments are ridiculous. Besides, so many people have their dog behind a fence thinking they will fun around and get exercise when the opposite is true. They aren't getting the different smells and mental stimuli (such as an obstacle course) they need. They are only getting their same back yard creating their need to dig, bark, and be anxious. Blessing to you. YOU'RE GOOD DOG PARENTS! Dogs don't know the difference between an apartment or castle. When inside, they just want to be with you.

I had a berner when I was a kid sadly he died from cancer in his belly when he was 5. He was just as sweet as Benny and he always held my hand when we went for walks. Every spring he would lay on the last teeny tiny piles of snow until they melted. Every winter if you made a tiny hole in a snow pile and asked him to look at it he would stick his head right into the pile. ;D

Apartments are fine to have a dog in as long if your allowed to have a dog. The most important thing is for any breed is that you have the time for them and love them. Dogs know ever much whether you love them or even like them. Dogs are like having children they take a lot time and care. Don't listen to people negative comments there always be a person who has something to say. I love to have a dog however I don't have the time for one. Wouldnot be fair to the animal Hopefully one day I will though
