In this video I want to share 10 things I wish I knew before I started a Bullet Journal over 4 years ago. I hope that these lessons I've learned can help you on your BuJo journey, whether you're a beginner, been at it for a while, or have yet to start! The Bullet Journal system is an amazing one and has changed my life for the better, but it can be easy to fall into certain "BuJo traps" that don't serve you. I know from experience! Let's help each other avoid these common pitfalls by sharing our experiences and giving advice in the comments :)

I learnt to create ‘fake calligraphy’. I got out an everyday, average pencil and wrote in some loopy handwriting, then I thickened the down strokes more than the up strokes and it looked neat and tidy. You don’t need expensive pens, brush pens or anything to do calligraphy. I’ve done fake calligraphy so much that I’m struggling to transition into fountain pens and such though which isn’t very useful lol.

I wish I knew that not everything had to be pretty like you see online. You don’t need a colour scheme for each month, you don’t need to use piles of washi tape, you don’t need to do fancy watercolour for every drawing. Sure you can but Turns out the minimalist style is what helps me the most

I wish I knew 1) what kind of paper and size of notebooks I like so I wouldn't have wasted a year in a notebook that annoyed me 2)that just because someone say a spread is a must for them doesn't mean I have to use it 3)what works for me changes depending on if u have school or I'm working or what else is happening that month /week 4)it is okay to merge your diary and bulletjournal (I have done this and it helps me actually stick to both)

@@PlantBasedBride i prefer something in between a4 and a5 size and thicker paper(120gsm) , I also need the paper to not be slippery so I prefer it to be more of a marker/paint type paper (I have tried 4brands so far and finally landed on nuuna as the closest to what I want) and ofc dotted paper is preferred :)

1. I wish I knew a bit more about what makes a good notebook before I bought my first one (it was a fairly cheap one - but there are certain things about it that were very irritating to me and I won’t waste the last third of the book because I want to start my nice new one) 2. A four page layout for a week is fine and what works best for me but it took me forever to find that out because I was so set on 2 page weeklies. 3. There’s no need to try to be artistic in spreads - picking a font and a colour is just fine and makes it look minimalistic and put together (I can’t draw but I can do fonts) 4. You can add as many features or things to your weeklies as you need to make it convenient - if this means amalgamating parts of one spread into your weeklies that’s fine

@flynnryder3943

I wish I had realized earlier on that there can be a happy medium between a minimalist and super artsy spread. I used to pressure myself to get a cover page and decorations done at the start of each month, but when I tried to cut it out altogether because I didn't have the time/motivation, I would get bored because I was seeing the exact same thing over and over. I wish I had realized that it's okay to leave pages simple with a nice title to leave room for the future if I feel like decorating it later. Your bullet journal shouldn't feel like another thing to check off of your to do list and all of the decorations you add don't have to be there immediately, you can simply wait for when you're feeling inspired to decorate your bullet journal or you could never decorate it at all. You should allow yourself room to be artsy if you feel like it without pressuring yourself to get it done. That increased my enjoyment a lot.
@flynnryder3943
@flynnryder3943 4 года назад
Also, I wish I had allowed myself to have running dailies earlier. One of the biggest things I hate to do in my bullet journal is have wasted space, so having a pre-set weekly never worked for me. However, once I switched to doing running dailies, I found it harder to plan ahead. I remedied this by starting with two pages split into four sections, and having four titles set up at a time to allow myself to plan ahead without restricting myself to using a certain amount of space. I have small handwriting, so it worked pretty well for me.

I just learned today that I don’t need to be an artist to have a bullet journal. And it’s been the thing holding me back from even trying. I’m not artistic, I can’t draw, and I don’t have time to even try to get fancy, so I have been looking at planners and Pinterest spreads wishing I could have a bujo. Well, today I decided I will start my very own bujo, and it will have messy writing on some days, nice layout on other days, or just a brain dump on others. It will be whatever it wants to be, and with time I will figure out what pages are useful. It will evolve into something I can’t even picture yet, so why am I worrying and stressing? Thank you for setting me free!

I started using a bujo in 2016. I started with a composition notebook following Ryder Carroll’s simple method. I’ve stayed in composition notebooks but moved to a graph style. I enjoy watching others using and creating their journals but never really felt any need to do what others do. I draw inspiration from others. I use mine primarily as a planner. I lay out goals and plans for the year then use my monthly and weekly spreads to plan actions towards those goals. My collections are generally things to support my goals. I add memories, quotes and images. I doodle or draw in the white space. I use washi to tip in some things I wish to keep. It’s customized for my needs. It works.

I'm fairly new to bullet journaling (watching bunch of videos of everyone else's and just in awe only because of how organized they are) I wish I new beforehand that it is perfectly okay to not have a set plan for the notebook. Mine so far consists of goals (mentally, physically, and book wise), quotes, a homework assignment, and a little doodle. I just enjoy not having strict lines and can do whatever I please in the notebook and can sometimes do a mixture of little doodles with what I am planning.

I've been bullet journaling for about 2.5-3 years now. I started strong and had some froofroo stuff. As time went on though it was brought to my attention that it was taking up a ton of time. I am not super creative but I thought I had to be. I was liking that but my family began to complain. As time has gone on, I've found I love habit trackers but I can't finish the month then I'm depressed. I've found that I need a calendar, a place for notes and reminders, a place to memory keep and journal. I've learned that it's ok to not touch it every day. I do take it most everywhere with me so if I need it I have it but sometimes it stays in the car or on my desk and is never opened. Other times it's open all day and I'm using two full spreads for a day. Its great! Relaxing when it needs to be and kicks my booty when I need it. 💙📘

Bullet journaling for me has been an evolution. When I first started 5 years ago it was a book of chaos. So much that I never had to worry about showing to anyone because nobody would be able to make heads or tails. Over the years, I’ve managed to make it neater and more organized, but even now it’s still all over the place. It’s also worth pointing out that even if you find spreads that work for you now, the same one might not work in the future as your life and needs change.

I started my bullet journal with a very cheap notebook, and used it for 6 months until I totally finished its pages. It's super cheap that I didn't spend extra money on it. It's the type of notebook that my daughter used for school, she had one left that she didn't use, so I took it and made it my bullet journal.

Same. I found grid notebooks that are just cheap paper in a spiral bound book. I make a lot of mistakes which drive me OCD-crazy so I like being able to rip out pages easily. No, you can't write on the back of the pages because the pens bleed through, but that's ok by me. I'm glad I'm not spending a lot of money on notebooks and I can rip out a page without it affecting all the other pages in the book.
@AammaK

For me it’s been freeing to remind myself I also don’t need to know everything right away and get it completely right from the start. You don’t need to look back and be sad about what you didn’t know back then. It’s okay to make mistakes and realize something didn’t workd because that’s just how you learn, how else? Copying stuff is totally fine if not even advisable, and it’s good to learn methods from others until you have enough ”data” to create your own. Being all excited about the esthetic side of this is also fine, just know you can make a U turn any time and give up things you already started, as well as start something new in the middle of a month if you feel like it. Whatever helps you get started and whatever keeps you going.

I like the fact that you can gameify certain spreads to encourage yourself with projects you feel anxious and are procrastinating about. Eg. Creating an artistic bingo card for going back to work after being a SAHM for 7 years and feeling totally disconnected from my previous professional life. 3 x 3 grid with some doodles and nice text with milestones like create CV, reach out to recruiters, get a haircut, work out my makeup look, figure out work wardrobe, apply for first role, reach out to referees, get thru first interview, secure job, start job...etc

I really loved all your points. I wish I knew to start bullet journaling with a pencil. I'm getting back to bullet journaling after a half-year break and having to start in a new and different notebook. By starting with pencil, I'm not as scared to just start and if some parts of the layout doesn't work for me, I can erase and not have to waste pages. Starting this way this time around has made it easier to find a system that works for me. Once I have completed a spread I was comfortable with, I switched over to a pen.

In regards to habit tracking. Just track one habit first. Don't start with like 5. Just start small. Habit tracking is great. I track work, exercise and medication as habits. I started with tracking one first. Xing one box a day. And then level up slowing. Don't overcommit initially. That's my advice for Habits tracking

I’m so glad that you always emphasize that a bujo can be anything that works for you, as long as it improves your life! Things like habit trackers never worked for me either, they’re too high maintenance to maintain and it puts way too much pressure on me. I have never been able to finish a bujo before because I always feel pressured to use it to organize everything and being a stressed person it would make it worse. Now on the first page of my bujo is "This notebook is for me to use FREELY"

WOW, thank you so much! Really, that was the most helpful advice about journaling I have ever seen so far. I am a passionate writer, scribbler, doodler, painter person with lots of stationary and everything needful and beautiful things which are ready to get used. But I never dared to start a BuJo, because I was so confused from all the stuff one apparently needed. Yet I am always overwhelmed by my own stuff, ideas, piled up notes, drawings, pens, colors. To hear that it is not necessary to use it in a BuJo, but helps to get my brain organized, and therefor my life, is a game changer. I will start right away. Again, thank you! (I do hope, my English is understandable)

This is a good video for those who are starting to bullet journal. You pretty much nailed every point. I wished I just had started simple and not discouraged myself because I wasn't a good artist or a planner. I have been bullet journaling for 9 months and it took me a lot of trial and error to develop a system that works to fit both personal and work.

Love this video! I started a super simple bujo to manage work projects last month. Your two-page weekly spread has been SUPER instrumental in getting me to a usable form quickly (daily was way overwhelming, monthly was too long of a term). I have also adapted it to a two week spread when the to do list on the left is being stubborn. I combine it with kanban boards in the same book for tasks I've delegated but need to keep progress on. And I may have finally found the relief my brain needed. I love the idea of the brain dump. I would love to use this for personal journaling too, but I'll add that later when I've gotten used to to the form.

Agree with so much of this. It took courage for me to drop the habit tracker even though it was becoming more negative than helpful. Also took a few false starts to get going as I was so intimidated by all the beautiful journals online. My first year was about trying what worked for me.

Thank you very much for that video :) I've been journaling for over 1 year and a half now, and I remembered having troubles starting it, although I was really really in a need for more organisation, and yes, a place to have my brain down on paper ! It worked well for me since, I am artistry and it allowed me to spend some time drawing while getting organized, just what I needed. I also already had a lot of pen, whashi, notebooks (just discovered dotted ones, and they are my favorites now), so it just allowed me to expend more all of my collections ! But recently, I had more troubles using it. Decorating it was a burden, something I had to do instead of something I wanted to. And it took me some times to realize it is ok to go back to something simpler. I do not change much my set-ups over the months, but I can go for a much more simpler doodle instead of a fancy illustration. And that maybe, the way I was tracking things over the month was not right, and maybe I can try new things, etc. And I found it hard to explain to my entourage why I had those troubles, and what bothered me, even to my roommate who is also BuJo addict. So thank you, it is very comforting to see that others are having the same problems and questions that I had :)

Like you I discovered habit trackers were the best way to not build that habit - in the end I stopped trying to force myself into them. Same with mood trackers - those tended to just exasperate me as I couldn't decide what was most indicative of my mood that day and putting all the colours didn't seem to be quite what it was intending me to do XD Cutting out what wasn't working for me streamlined the whole experience for me - as well as stopping holding myself up to the standards I set upon myself by watching artists who make stunning spreads month in and month out. It took a couple of years though!

I started out in 2014, after a friend had pointed me to the original website. In the beginning, I mostly used the bullet journal to track my work as a writer, so I always wrote down my words per day and per project (stories and blog posts, mostly). I decided, after seeing that the suggested notebook for bullet-journalling was 20€, that I could very well start my own journal in an exercise book for less than 1€, just to try it out. I'd merely note the day and the tasks and other things, kept a page for a simple calendar (just the numbers 1 to 30/31) and one for my monthly to-do list and that was it. Until last October, I actually kept it like that and it worked well enough for me. Then I decided to put in a few trackers (a few habit trackers, cut back on some after two months, and a tracker for my words, so I had a visual representation), make a nicer calendar, and add a weekly calendar. I'm now using a cheap notebook for 3€, an off-brand black fine-liner, a text marker for a bit of colour (I have a set of six I use on rotation per month), and an old fountain pen I've had for decades. So no expensive stationery, just the things I feel I need. I'm not taking my journal along, but keep it on my desk at home (but then, I work from home, so I spend a lot of time there), so the exercise books and one notebook of the same kind I had for almost two years before my current one were fine for me. I'd advise everyone who wants to start with bullet-journalling to experiment, to see what is there and what they might need. The nice thing about the journal is that you can change it whenever you want. You're not bound for months, you can change a lot of things within a day or a week, so if you find something is useless for you, drop it. If you think something could be useful for you, try it out. Find out what works for you and don't be afraid to make changes, even after years of bullet-journalling. I did it and I'm glad I did.

I was hesitant to start my own bullet journal bc I am a perfectionist. I realized that I truly had to keep it super simple so that I would actually use it and keep it up. For me, I use pencil and do not add any artistic fluff bc I AM NOT CREATIVE! In the 3 months I’ve used my journal, my weekly/daily spreads have changed drastically. I think I finally found a spread that works for me which is exciting! Plus, I feel like I’ve struck a balance between super simple to set up yet aesthetically pleasing to the eye (at least for my taste). It’s exciting to know that it’s perfect for me! Knowing that, I could never buy another pre-made journal again.

I always used a running task list at work but I wasnt using it efficiently. I started looking into bullet journaling as a way of better organizing my tasks. It's still too big of a concept for me. However I have incorporated some of the tips I've learned through watching bujo videos. My handwriting is bad so I made my March spread on Word and then glued it into my notebook. I did similar thing for other things I need to track for work and glued those in as well. I use page flags and different bullets and highlighters to help with organization. It's not everything most bujos have. But so far it works (I started in February). I'm going to keep working on it and make it better over time. I am really grateful for this video and some of your others that I've seen because I'm more confident that my handy dandy notebook as I call it can be what I want.

Great video! It's good for people to know that the bujo has to work for them, not for someone else and if you feel like you're "failing" it then it isn't right. I saw my niece set up a bujo but I don't think she ever used it. I couldn't understand why people wanted to keep track of their mood, etc. And if all you're doing is creating a calendar, then just use a planner. So I didn't create one myself because I knew I wasn't going to use all the elements. I'm someone who jots a ton of notes in whatever notebook is nearby resulting in about 20+ partly used books and no idea how to find anything. Then I read that people who like to jot notes should keep a list journal. I went through all my notebooks and organized everything into about 6 different books in a list format (from craft ideas, to reading lists, bucket lists, shopping lists, etc.). However, I realize I only open one of the books regularly to keep of my orders and deliveries. So now, I'm researching what kinds of things other people are putting in a bujo. I'm pretty confident that I can actually create a bujo that works for me and all my interests...I can remove habit trackers or calendaring and add other goals. Thank you for sharing your bujo experience!

I watched a lot of your videos before but I actually just stumbled upon this one and I feel that what you are talking about is really true for me. My first bullet journal was in a regular school notebook that I bought in a store near my school. I didn't use a future log (tho I will include it in my next one because I felt a little bit lost not having any yearly overview) and at first I didn't use weeklies at all, and when I finally started the layout changed basically every single month until I found the one that works the best. When I wanted to draw something I used my sister's crayons or markers, and sometimes I didn't draw at all, it was all just black or blue pen. When I look back at those spreads they are a whole mess, something crossed off, something I had to cover with another piece of paper, some random text written in such terrible handwritting that I can't even recognize... But the point is, that it worked and helped me to keep my life together and improve my productivity and mental health, and I think as long as it works for me(because I don't know, maybe one day I will change my mind) , I will keep using a bullet journal because it really is life changing, at least for me.

Really love this advice. Starting a bullet journal has always stressed me out because 1. I know it won't be aesthetic at first, it will be a mess and 2. I know I won't stick to it daily. I also picture them being extremely high maintenance; something about all of the decorations and pretties. But I love how you've reframed this for me, there's a lot of info I keep track of on the regular in multiple different apps that I just think would be nicer on paper.

I remembered when I got so dang inspired, like really extreme adrenaline rush in the night and thought : "Hey, I should start journaling!". So I went to the DIY store nearby and bought it instantly. My first journal was just plain, only using black pens but wow I enjoyed it. The first 5 days went great, until when the adrenaline rush had gone away. Not because I don't like it anymore, it was because I got into depression and it just hit me differently and I was no longer interested in doing anything with my life. I did marked each date when I'm journaling and let's say my first journal was very depressing. It took me absolutely 2 and a half year to recover and now I'm giving myself another shot on this. Thank you for this video :)

Such fabulous advice! I don't know if I wish I knew certain things before I started as the process, the mistakes and what not, have been invaluable for me. What I have learned is a) that a simple soft cover Leuchtturm B5 is the one for me despite buying more expensive ones b) like you I need my habits/health trackers on my weekly page c) your rolling weekly is awesome! I then split each day in to tasks, events and notes. My brain doesn't take in the symbols so well. The same with my task list. I split it in to Home, School, Food and Other. So much categorisation :) When things get hectic I need my bullet journal the most - with so many entires I needed it broken down more d) I really enjoy creating a pretty journal that is highly functional e) I love the community of creative bullet journaling goddesses. I definitely learn the most from you

Wish I knew: adding a margin down the left side of the page (just like the loose leaf paper in school) was the #1 thing that made the bullet journal finally work for me. And I do NOT like most of the pretty spreads. Like to see them for others on IG and YT, but they clutter my own book up. And I NEED a calendar. Separate insert in my TN specifically for a monthly calendar so that I don’t need to worry that I’ll forget to pay a bill. Thanks for this video! ❤️
@PlantBasedBride
@PlantBasedBride 4 года назад
That’s a great idea! What do you usually use the margins for?
@kitdubhran2968
@kitdubhran2968 4 года назад
Plant Based Bride he margin separates the text (wall of text is hard for my adhd brain to focus on) from the actual bullets. So I can just skim down the left with my gaze and stop at any tasks, or whatever bullet I’m looking for. Then I glance over and read what I wrote. It makes the whole process more smooth and keeps me from losing any important things to the mess. Keeps all of my bullets in a neat line. I also put the date on the bullet side of the margin. And whenever I’m writing fiction/story, I add another margin to the top of the page, so I can tell at a glance that those pages are not for journaling, they’re creative writing. So I can write in my book and not get overwhelmed with anything butting in or getting lost.

I wish I knew I didn't need to follow the systems I saw online, nor that it needed to be fancy and/or artsy. I also wish I knew I preferred a more minimalistic style. Honestly, the only things I need for my bujo to appeal to me is: washi tape and stickers to make it more lively, colours (I'm very visual and need things to be clear and colourful) and a colour scheme for each week/month.

This is less something I wish I'd known and more something I'm glad I know going in, and it's how simple the bullet jorunal can be. Going in with the knowledge of the OG bullet journal has allowed me to come up with my own ideas! I've already learned calligraphy so I think my headings are gonna be in calligraphy but everything else is just gonna be nice and simple, and my "theme" is literally just going to be, like, writing the months in the colors i associate them with. :P It was good for me to learn the very basics and base what I wanted to do with the journal on my own skills and comfort zone (I'm really not an artsy type outside of calligraphy). :P

While I loved the writing and drawing (when I felt like it), carrying a book around to all my different things I do became prohibitive for productivity. Switching to a digital version with iPad/pencil/GoodNotes means I have it updated and available in my phone, which I have to carry all the time, but also get to write and doodle and set up my pages as I wish each day/month. Best of both worlds!
