🏠 Renting an apartment in Colombia, especially in Medellin, can be challenging due to strict requirements and the necessity for a guarantor.
💼 Colombians are known for their entrepreneurial spirit, but this can lead to a culture where people are always looking to take advantage in business dealings.
🚗 Traffic congestion is a significant issue in Medellin and other Colombian cities, impacting commute times and daily life.
🍔 Despite the perception of a healthier lifestyle, the Colombian diet consists of greasy, carb-heavy foods, contributing to health issues like heart disease.
🛍️ Online shopping in Colombia has limitations, but services like freight forwarders can help access a broader range of products.
🤝 Colombian social circles can be cliquey, making it challenging for newcomers to integrate, but online communities can provide support.
💑 Dating culture in Colombia differs from the US, with a more traditional approach and an emphasis on family involvement.

I would like to see a video you ranking all the other youtuber's that have come and gone in Medellin! I think that would be comical and could bring back an episode of the Colombian Podcast for our enjoyment!

Cali traffic is terrible too. If you're driving a car, you have to worry about sharing lanes with motos. They will swarm around you -especially at intersections. You have to be really careful, especially at night because a lot of them don't have working lights on them. Strangely, I've *never* seen an accident happen, although I've seen many near misses. Driving in Colombia is like playing a constant game of "Chicken" where you have to decide if the damage to your car is worth the extra minutes shaved off your trip. I have been stopped only a single time by traffic police and it was because I was looking down at my phone at an intersection because I had Google maps guiding me. People go through red lights, ignore stop signs and park pretty much anywhere etc. It's a real adjustment after learning to drive in N. America because you have to always be on the defensive and can't expect others to follow the "rules of the road". In fact, you're better off if you forget any rules you may know!

Thanks for the tips! I never knew about the saying yes and in a bit. That explains a lot of misunderstandings I have had! For rent, would someone from another country be able to pay the rent for the entire contract up front to avoid some of the requirements?
@MedellinBuzz
@MedellinBuzz 2 месяца назад
Glad it was helpful! And yes, but it depends on the rental agency. Some have strict policy that doesn't allow for paying a years rent upfront. Furthermore, if you do pay the rent upfront, they can cancel the contract and ask you to leave, pay the fine for breaking the contract early, and you're out a whole year's worth of rent. So it can be tricky.

The driving requirements by all means have changed and for the better. It's like 20hrs class time and 28 driving or the other way around. That didn't start until 2017 before that yeah, you could just pay to play if you will. Plus, let's not act like people don't know people with the 'hook up' if you will. It'll be good one day, but it's better now, then say 10 years ago. That being said, it's still pretty damn bad.

You aren’t kidding about the saying “yes” part of Paisa culture. It takes some getting accustomed to and can be very confusing at first. Like, sometimes the person can just say they dont know instead of telling me the wrong info. Colombians run on their own time schedule too. You didn’t mention how the line will be 50 people deep and the lady at the register will have a 5 minute conversation with each person they know. If you see a Colombian in a hurry, its because they’re on fire. I love this country though. The people are wonderful. The weather is perfect. The nature is breathtaking. I have a few complaints but they’re all first world problems. I hope Colombia continues its upward trajectory. Medellin is cool but Manizales is my favorite so far.

Hey Andrew, I’ve following your channel for a while, thank you for the great work you’ve been putting in. What is your take on the xenophobia situation in Medellin now created by the major, and lately there’s been all kind of xenophobic sign saying no gringos etc now the perception of gringos as completely changed and being look at as these monsters that come to take advantage of minors. I’m from the US and I’ve bought my ticket to come to Medellin for the first time next month in June and now watching this unfolding all over youtube. My question is. How do you see the interaction with the gringos by the locals as of lately from your experience in your surrounding? Are gringos not welcomed there anymore?

Thanks for watching and the kind words. I really appreciate it. First, remember RU-vid isn't reality. It's just a glimpse of reality. Furthermore, most creators bank on views to make some money (small amounts); therefore, they need the most alarming and noteworthy content to capture the view and retain it. That being said, you don't have much to worry about. As long as you are a good tourist, coming to learn and experience the culture, you probably won't experience any xenophobia.
