I had a shovel in my car when I got pulled over at night at 16. One of the cops shined his light in my car and asked "why do you have a big stick". I said "sir, it's a shovel" and he was like cool. So after they gave me the ticket, my curiosity got the best of me so I asked him "Officer, you were asking about the stick, but you're cool with a shovel? So if I assault someone or beat em to death, that's bad, but if I bury the body, it's acceptable?" He didn't find that funny at all and I didn't get home till way past my curfew

Wow! I was babysitting infants at 11 yrs old! I was experienced, being the eldest child. Our parents had no problem leaving us alone while they hung out at the neighbors 3 houses down. Times have changed!

A couple of things. Here in Texas you're allowed to carry any kind of knife, sword, any blade pretty much anywhere. While there is no legal age when a child may be left home alone, 12 is pretty widely accepted. The parent IS responsible for the child's safety either way. Oh, and a child may drink at a restaurant or at home as long as they are within eyesight of their parent/guardian (with their consent) at all times. None of this applies to all states.

Actually the drinking age one is similar in the US. At least in some states (like mine) it’s legal for minors to drink alcohol at home/with parental consent

In Texas, it's legal for a spouse, a parent, or (I think) a grandparent to give someone alcohol as long as they're present when it's consumed.

Same here in Ohio perfectly legal provided it's at home and your parent gave it to you. Theirs actually quite a few laws like that where it's a loophole if your parents did it.

In the US, if babysitters had to be 16 years old, we would lose half our babysitting force. My daughters started babysitting when they were 14 for neighbors who wanted to go out for the evening. By the time they were 17, they had "real" part-time jobs and did not want to spend their free time babysitting.

I grew up in Hawaii and we could be left alone at home if the parents felt it was safe. I was a latch key child, so I took care of myself at home till my parents came some since I was about 6.

The home alone age limit list surprised me. By some of the ages mentioned, I had babysat younger neighbor kids. When I was 11, I went with an elementary school friend on a bus to Downtown Cincinnati and we bought tickets from a scalper (reseller) to see the Opening Day Cincinnati Reds baseball game. (That game is now such a big deal that you wouldn't necessarily have a hope of scoring a ticket at any reasonable price). We didn't have neglectful parents; the other kids' father went on to be a member of the local school board.

I was left home alone for the weekend when I was 12. My family went out of town but I couldn't get off work...yes, I had a 30 hr/week job - with the city's parks department no less - when I was 12 years old. And the first time I got paid to babysit someone else's kids at was age 10. None of this was particularly unusual in Idaho in the 1980s.

Yeah, nobody really gets interested in age limits. Every child is left alone at least once. Besides, does it make any difference if they're alone on the street or at home?

No limit in Maine, though they must be able to feed themselves. Not cook necessarily, just be able to get food and eat it on their own. Although, under 12 is generally frowned on, and if something happens to them while home alone, you can get in serious trouble.

Age 12 is a common age to start babysitting in the U.S. After they get a driver's license (age 16) they charge much more. As a child, my brother & I were left home alone around ages 9 & 10. They went to a friends house every Friday night to play cards. So maybe 2 or 3 hours. I do remember being left home alone at a much earlier age. I was home from school, sick on the couch & my mom asked if I was okay with her running some errands. I agreed. I may have been 6-ish.

yeah when i was in like 3rd grade i was basically left home alone on a regular basis and just told "dont answer the door". and before that i think there was periods where i was left alone at home. my mom left for work at 5am and came home around 6pm so basically i would just wake up, eat, wait for grandma to pick me up or in 4th grade just ride my bike to school (that was the big thing the school let you do in 4th grade). and then there was unsupervised playing outside. i was only told "dont go north or east" because it wasnt the best neighborhood and that part gets really really sketchy but everywhere south and west was fine. just had to be home by dinner or 8:30

Growing up in the 70/80s I was left home alone pretty early...maybe 8 or 9. But I was an only child. My mother said no way would it have worked with more than one child. And i absolutely love that there are places in the world where it's just not deemed necessary to carry a weapon. Just the idea of "why would anyone need a gun?" (even the police!) is kind of awesome. But I live in Texas, so.... Also, I love your wallpaper! Very stylish!

I was home and on my own at five years old. That was in the 60's in the suburbs. We even had to walk to school because we lived within two miles of the school so we weren't eligible to get picked up by the bus. Even as a kid I thought it was funny when my mother would tell my brother "watch your brother" when we walked to school. I was five, he was six, what could he do to protect me?

Gee. In the 70s kids in the 7th Grade(12-13 yr old) regularly took a little safety course at school and then became reliable and well paid babysitters. I am pretty sure they are not 😌mature enough to do this today. 😕

I was left home alone at a pretty young age. I walked to school by myself from 6 years old onward. I was left to feed the animals when I was 11 and onward. And left by myself to plow a field with a tractor from 13 onward (and that took like 7-8 hours to do)........

@@johnnabuzby6103 Can often be turned on oneself in a struggle, I have an antique sword stick, rarely taken out in public unless very unsteady on my feet due to age and illness, good days and bad ones, but is a weapon whilst still sheaved due to its weight being a Lignum Vitae cane, the heaviest and hardest wood, it does not float in water, aided by the weight of the thick carbon steel blade and I would probably be dead by the time I could actually draw it from the cane. Lives by my front door during the day and beside bed at night.

@@wigginingeneral This is the absolute most asinine argument ever and it keeps getting spouted by the anti gun people. Here in the U.S gun ownership is a RIGHT, not something that is "allowed." If you have a gun and it gets taken from you and used against you then you are not properly trained and therefore have no business carrying.

And lets keep this interesting and say - compare Switzerland to Ireland without dragging the US into the discussion - in 2019 Switzerland had more rape cases per capita... On the other hand - the UK, where access by the general public to firearms is subject to some of the strictest control measures in the world, rape cases as much higher then both Ireland and Switzerland combined, but still far behind with Turkey, who has in turn quite lax gun laws. So from that first observation, it seems to me that neither the presence or absence of guns are an indicator or influence on rape statistics...

We used to allow 18yo to drink beer and light wine, but after all the 18-20yo motor vehicle accidents, that was pushed back to 21. I believe every state has done that now. Here in Maryland, it was made 21 back in the early 80s.

Allowing underage drinking or tattooing pales in comparison to Canada or some US states where gender is optional and fluid for almost any child. Courts have ruled against parents who attempt to stop a child from taking puberty blockers for the purpose of changing their bodies to match their gender identity.

We had moved to America from Belfast a few years earlier. Mum and Da at work, I was about 10. Burned the kitchen down, same day my sisters burned the front garden down about an acre. The fire men were not happy with us or our parents.

Hmm, my state is pretty conservative, and I definitely got the pill from my GP before turning 18, and do not recall having to take any pregnancy test. My older sister was about 11 & I was 6 when we were left home alone after school since both my parents worked. I had no idea what the minimum age was, so I just checked and there is no age limit, apparently.

In the state I grew up in there was a slick catch-22 about underage drinking. Minors could not buy alcohol or posses alcohol and it was illegal to buy alcohol for a minor, however in the minors home with parental consent you could drink. However the parents could be charged with a felony charge of providing alcohol/drugs to a minor.

In the state of NY there is also no set limit on how old a child has to be when left alone so I guess we're the same as you guys in Ireland.

"Unaliving" yourself is not illegal. It is the only act I know of where ATTEMPTING it is illegal in the US, but SUCCEEDING is not. (These laws are rightfully changing, though. Usually the person is taken into custody and treated rather than jailed.)

The whole "public nudity" thing reminds me of something I saw years ago when I was in a small town in Vermont. At least at the time, the state didn't have a ban on public nudity, so in the summer a bunch of high school kids (boys, all of them) decided it would be cool to walk around naked downtown. This caused a bit of a ruckus, to the point that the town council decided to hold a public meeting to let citizens have their say on whether the town should have an ordinance banning the practice. The general consensus seemed to be in favor of the ban, until one woman got up to speak. She was about 80, obviously monied by the way she was dressed. She said "I've lived here my entire life. It's September right now, but won't the weather take care of this issue in a month or two?" I've never seen support for a proposed ordinance evaporate so quickly in my life.

I only happened to see it because I was in my hotel room and it was on the local access cable channel. They finally did pass an ordinance in 2007.

I babysat at 15 (no idea if it was legal) in the United States but I felt like I was safe to do so because I had helped my mother with her small daycare in our home for years before doing so. However, I know many young adults that can barely take care of themselves let alone another person. It’s super interesting that different states have different ages, seems like testing for a license might make more sense. Restaurant workers in my area have to be certified in food safety and it isn’t perfect but it does help.

11:00: So, it is up to the parent to decide when their child is mature/reliable enough to be left at home alone, rather than some bureaucrat looking at averages. Some people were left home alone at age 10 with no problems (I was one), and some shouldn't be left at home alone at age 30.

In California, USA there is no requirement for a pregnancy test before receiving contraceptives, unless that contraceptive would prohibit you from having your mental period. In those cases, you would receive pregnancy testing to make sure you weren’t in the early stages of pregnancy without knowing so.

At least in the state I live in you can be served in a bar or restaurant if you're accompanied by your parent, guardian, or spouse of legal drinking age who approves. The establishment serving the drinks of course has the right to refuse service but it is legal. This exception also applies at home.

I think my younger sister and I started staying home alone when I was 14. I'm grateful to have caught the tail end of the more lax days when there wasn't a rule for everything. The drinking age was by state until 1984 when congress decided to deny road funds to any state that didn't raise the age to 21.

Indiana (Next to Illinois, the state shaped kinda like a boot) we have the same law as Ireland, you can leave your kids home alone at any age you deem acceptable, however you are responsible for anything the child does while you're away. That law is in effect until the child turns 18 years of age.

Arizona also does not have a minimum age. When I was a child in the 70’s, from age 8+, I would walk to and from school alone, less than a mile. I would also be at home alone for a few hours before my parents got off of work.

Diane, I have been a fan your RU-vids for a long long time. And I have to say that a couple of things suddenly occurred to me. First off, are you broadcasting from your actual bedroom? Are you sitting on the edge of a family bed somewhere? Is the door locked from outside,... seriously, blink like 3 times if you're in trouble. And also your voice is so soothing and practical. I think it would be just chilling to have a totally sensible soothing voice like yours describing powerful armaments and horrible destruction you could do in a video game. Like a really soothing overlord voice telling you lethal info,... chilling. Keep up the great videos.

In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Fancy name for the state of Massachusetts), it is legal for any person under the age of 21 to consume alcohol in a private residence, including during such events as parties, with parental supervision/consent.

We have sections of some beaches in the U.S. where nudity is permitted, or at least the law looks the other way. Defense weapon ... easy! You just take Editor Diane with you wherever you go! Until recently you could be nude anywhere in San Francisco. They made it a crime to be nude near schools. I've encountered nude protesters, a group of nude bicyclists (don't ask, sounds bad to me), abd a nude couple at the farmers market, but the nude areas of the beaches are the more common places to encounter nudists. The cool and windy weather might be a problem for anyone that wants to come try it out though.

Since I was a child, the end of the school day has moved back from 4pm to 3:30 or 3pm in places. Most jobs don't finish until 5, what are families supposed to do about having their kids home alone? When I was young we had neighbours in the neighbourhood rather than close to our house, the next street or so where we could go for that hour or two. Gotta love these extended "families" x

Eamon orgs run expensive after school day care programs on school grounds! If u can't afford them or can't get in due to limited space! Then parents have to hire private child care watchers with their own cars to pick the kids up from school taking them to a private residence! Many couples must work different shifts to accommodate day care needs! So one parent can be home with kids! Where it gets bad is when minimum wage workers have to work night and weekend shifts! Up till now the us gov hasn't helped families meet the costs of childcare! Some providers won't accept us gov subsidies which will pay towards extremely poor child care costs! Think i heard this maybe changing! Let's hope so!

Eamon i meant the us gov won't pay childcare for night or weekend shifts! Heard this is due to change? Also for past 25 years or so the us gov will pay a welfare rate for childcare costs! Which means the child care provider earns a much lower amount then they normally charge for services! Problem is the program is voluntary! Meaning poor people don't always get reduced childcare costs! Heard the gov may soon help families more?

Either it's legal for kids to drink with parents in Louisiana or some people think this is true because it's super normal here. I'd take sips of my dad's beer back in the day. Alcohol and bar laws and customs are more lax here than the rest of the US. Like at least in New Orleans, there's no closing time and you can bring drinks outside the bar. We have drive thru frozen daiquiri shops.

My daughter has been on oral contraception since 13, but for different reasons, for hormonal imbalances and to curb chronic migraines. I know she wasn't doing the dirty, cuz since 10yrs old she has had agoraphobia and has been home schooled, she's now 19 and enrolled at Clemson University online. And has a good job online.
