I agree with your point on garaging the cars. I want to get another one (I have an E38 & E39) but Don't have the Garage space. I would NEVER let these cars sit outside. Also I'd like to pick them up barley running or not running for "cheap" then you just do everything and know it is sorted.
Good video and content. I like BMW's. My brother has a 2014 BMW 528. So far he hasn't told me he had any issues. I'm beginning to Bmws are probably more reliable than some people say they are.
So glad my e60 m5 has 3 pedals. The used e60 m5 marketplace is a minefield of neglected examples; the best examples rarely trade hands. I'm on my third duty cycle of many wear items at 170,000 miles and 9 years. With that said, the f10 and f90 m5s are quick cars, but not nearly as analog as a v10 with 3 pedals.
Damn you Nate!!!😭😭 Just got my M5 a few months now.. haven't even driven it yet..now getting the chance to work on it.. waiting for my BE to come in the mail. Now I feel like I wanna freaking cry hearing u list out all that stuff😭🤣🤣. But keep up the good work.. your videos keep me up to date with what to do and how to do it 👍🏽💯💯
HAHA SAME, I got mine right before the pandemic hit, started working on it around the same time this build series started, I've got mine 99% sorted out, just waiting on one more part, but after watching this video I'm thinking "what did I get myself into"
I orders my bearings since January and still waiting.... waiting............. waiting...................... Omg I'm bout to have a pandemic attack!! But I'll get there with #Nate's help
How depressing. Thanks, Nathan. Just kidding. It's good that we have someone like you to be real and provide the real cost of ownership for such a car as a BMW, let alone the M5. It'll be interesting what other issues pop up once you get it back on the road. Paddle shifters costing so much? Who knew? I appreciate your candidness. Keep up the good work. I sold my E53, and although I do miss it, I don't miss the uncertainty of what's going to pop up next. I've since shifted my focus on helping a friend restore an '88 Land Rover Defender 110. Oh, the simpler days without Vanos, ECUs, and having to be a techno-wizard to diagnose a car. Now it's just rust and neglect. I still see another BMW somewhere in my future. I've spent too much money on silly tools to let them just sit there in my toolbox. :-) Cheers!
i bought from a seller in Germany the whole hydraulic system for SMG including the pump and the electric motor for 2400E without VAT, new parts in box. ( bought it on my company, not normal person). M5 it's a money pit until you fix it to drive properly then you only need to take good care of it, because everyone floors them i don't think you can find one M5 E60 in it's own mind without errors or broken parts.
Nathan where could I read about the vanos system? I am just curious about how it is better than my standard oil pump in my civilian car. PS I am so amazed how you deal with all these high priced parts and remain sane. I am sure the BMW driving experience beats the daylights out of my old GM cars. You have made me appreciate when I see one of these BMW's on the road what it takes to keep it there. Have a good day.
Nathan, what's the difference between the old vanos pump and the updated one? I checked on real oem for pre-lci and lci models and the pump # never changed. It's the same through out the production run. Am I missing smtg? Thanks
@@user-oj6vl8io3f My bad, I was thinking about the SMG II on the e46 M3, which is a regular manual transmission with an SMG clutch add on (that can be removed). The e60 M5 I think got the SMG III which can't be converted ... bummer. A manual trany swap does sounds like the better option.
LeverPhile it does. If I was smart I would have been gathering parts for the swap over my year of ownership of mine, instead I’m putting 2k or more into the Smg.
Lets not kid ourselves people.. if things go wrong with one of these, it's gonna cost a lot to fix it. I've had mine for 3 months now and was lucky enough to pick up a decent one..(Both previous owners had kept it well maintained) But you still have the wear and tear items to worry about. When I picked mine up I noticed the L/H door mirror (Passenger door mirror over here in the UK) was abysmal looking and couldn't really see much in it, these cars have Electrochromatic..(Auto Dimming) door mirrors as well as the rear view mirror. I thought.. "It's just a door mirror glass, surely it can't be that expensive" Big mistake on my side, phoned a local dealer and got a price for a replacement glass.. They wanted £485 just for the glass.. which equates to around $590 US.. just for the glass. I got one on ebay for £150.. approx. $180. Hopefully I get a bit of use from the car before something really expensive rears its ugly head.. FYI the video's are spot on Nathan, keep up the good/expensive work.
Yes the Ebay engine price is down, but the miles on those engines are up... and the number available down. You are almost in a space where a donor car makes sense, at least you have a shot of getting some history and scoring something with less than 100,000 miles on it and between two E60's you might get lucky and land 75% of a working vehicle.
Nathan you can have my paddle shifters . I had a carbon fiber set made . And I’m all about the m5 family. Let me know ( Duane Moore ) is my RU-vid channel
I don’t have any of that stuff . I’m a simple man . Mooreplumbingsd@yahoo.com . Email me address and I’ll send .. let me know you got this then I’ll erase post
Rich men have moved on the something else. Know these cars are in the hands of people who want to appear rich... Rich people don't care about pricing of parts and will just have a mechanic fix everything.
Man Nathan you want to talk about our money pit I didn't realize the m5 was that bad but you reported truly on it and I've been telling you now for get an E46 m3 04 to 06 even if the car is cheap the most you should have to put into would be 10K ! And it won't come back you like this M5 everyone stay away from this car unless you can afford
09:10 "...try and find one with the engine not blown up..." An M5 without a blown engine? Why I have never heard of such a thing. Do tell us more of this mythical creature.
