Greenville, while sketchy in some parts back then, was more enjoyable and less crowded 10-15 years ago. Downtown feels overrun now. My home (for the past 7 years) is anderson and feels like what greenville was in its growing phase, a blend of revival meets original residents. I hate to see the old school people who accept change be shoved out by newcomers, and that’s what I work to try to prevent here - working toward bridging the gap between the new folks and the longtime residents. As a native South Carolinian, I have a few corrections to make. First, mustard BBQ sauce is the primary sauce in the Midlands, Most of the other areas are .more likely to offer you vinegar based (especially in the Pee Dee area). My hometown of Cheraw, SC offers some of the best that you ever tasted. The other correction is regarding "Bless Your Heart." While it is true that bless your heart can be used as an insult, it can often be used as a term of endearment. You just have to listen to the context. If someone in your family passed, or you break your leg bless your heart is most likely an expression of sympathy. The funny thing about that term is that people who like to highlight that expression often come from places who use terms that are equally as bad - "God bless him" and "I am just sayin'"...

I’m surprised you didn’t mention that when it does snow ,even just one meager inch, that everybody goes to the grocery stores to buy milk and bread. @LongLeggedOne

Thats how Portland Oregon gets when people hear its gonna snow or it does. and it rains a lot, but people still speed in it and often i see em going down the street and looks like inches from hitting another car, and believe it or not, the western bugs can be a nuisance too but people act like their bugs and spiders arent a big deal next to whats in the south. Im more used to no see ums vs spiders. The stuff I dont like here, I am looking to correct moving to Columbia SC. Winters are generally mild until they aren't. This past winter many houses in my daughters development in Summerville had pipes burst on their exterior mounted on-demand heating/hot water systems (Navien). For the life of me, no clue why ANYONE would mount a system outside. I am ok with the mustard based bbq. Not the best, but far better than most any place up north.

There is constant building here and if you do not have a good income you probably cannot afford it here. Also there is no public transportation in many places. So if you are without a car, forget it. House and apartment rentals are skyrocketing too. Also did he mention the traffic and the bad drivers (especially from Ohio and NY) It is a matter of time before the insurance costs will rise to NY/NJ/Cali levels. The southern charm that he mentions is disappearing too. It used to be that people waved to you. It is happening less and less. @@PAULY-P Kind of is an understatement.. The Only reason I moved here, is because i finally met my biological father couple of years ago, and they asked me to move here closer to them. I did so after my grandmother died, as I was taking care of her at the time. From florida actually. And as much crap as florida gets for being the way it is, I would give anything to have Not moved here.. But here I am. In horry county. And you are definitely right about the people. Most everyone I have talked to here, is super nice. And the races arent anywhere near as split as they are most everywhere else I have been, and i find that Really awesome. Most of the idiots I have had to deal with here either worked for the government, and were so full of themselves because of it, or random idiots on the internet telling me to go back where I came from, while having NO clue as to what my situation is here.

@@adamn2850 Yeah, SC has some good parts but again it's a pocket state. I like some towns near the mountains and some towns near the ocean like the Murrells Inlet etc. FL is a pocket state too. There is more racism in FL than SC. People in SC come together. I'm house hunting right now and the only areas im interested in are DeLand, Ormond Beach, Flagler Beach areas and Plant City- east of Tampa. Im also looking into NWA (Northwest Arkansas) in the Ozarks and maybe east Oklahoma. Basically because of all the waterfalls, river, and the Ozarks. I know FL and Ozarks are alot different but i can get a couple acres in OK or AR with a decent house for around $100k or less. They also have stand your ground laws and have passive gun laws. SC is still a good option. Decisions decisions 🤔. Do i want land or close to the beach? Hard choice. Edit: FL is getting very crowded which i dont care for. In 20 yrs it will be unlivable. Plus alot of homeless everywhere, even in nicer neighborhoods sadly.

Being diabetic, I wouldn't fit in with the sweet tea thing. Stationed @ Myrtle Beach AFB 84-86 (I heard it's a big strip mall now) & loved going to the beach etc. However, gotta be careful re: fire ants. Possibly looking forward to coming back & settling down. Ya'll be blessed.

I have family that moved to Aiken. Not sure if i like it. The town is too spread out and not really connected. The old part on Laurens is nice but that gets old. I still don't know what to think of it. The people seem nice for the most part.

Down the road from you in a nearby town. Easley has grown up, so you don’t need to venture to greenville for good eats. I’ll recommend taco taco for (obviously) tacos, inky’s for subs, and pint station for a good beer selection. Also a few good new pizza places have opened up. The whole place has grown up in the past few years. Your first stop should probably be smoking pig though, a bbq place featured numerous times on espn and picked as the best bbq in the acc, an athletic conference deeply rooted in NC, the arguable home of pork bbq.

My fiancé and I have been thinking about moving to Charleston ever since we visited last year. We currently live in AL where he is from but I’m from OH. Charleston seems so perfect in every way. Any tips on which hospitals/cancer centers to work at there? Any downsides to living in Charleston?

I can tell you that Trident Hospital is the place no one here likes. However, MUSC and Roper are great hospitals.

Plenty of great hospitals throughout the state. Augusta, GA is a hospital hub, too, but it's a shithole, although places like North Augusta and Aiken aren't bad for the most part, and are very close. Lots of people commute to Augusta from there.

Owning a car in South Carolina is expensive as there is a stupid car tax every year (waste of your money!). Main tourist areas are Myrtle Beach, Charleston & Hilton Head Island. Alligators, Palmetto Bugs & Sand Gnats are very common here. Average 1 Bedroom rental goes for about $1,150 a month in tourist areas.

Coming to SC for the winter. I bought a few acres in Orangeburg. Can anyone tell me about the area? I just want peace and quiet, to ride my horses, and enjoy the southern culture. I also want to be in a red state. I hate where my state is heading. I promise I won't talk about anything being better back home lol except for maybe the pizza. 😁
