Hello, you have built an awesome cargo trailer conversion. This is my favorite design. It has all the essentials (shower, cooking area, heating/cooling & a toilet) & it still maintains a compact footprint. I am considering such a build to supplement my work life on the road.
Right on! It is small, but if your ok making sacrifices in comfort and space I think it’s an excellent option. I like the smaller trailers for towing and getting back to the nice campsites closer to the lakes.
Another well done video. Very smart, practical solutions for a camper conversion. I was surprised you didn’t include your awning. We camp in a small off the shelf trailer, Escape 17B, and feel the awning is invaluable. It keeps the area in front of the door way dry, shoes left outside are dry, we can cook under it, provides shade. We can enclose the sides when needed. It’s not bug free bug, we carry a Clam for that.
Thanks! It’s very true I love our awning! Great for the shade and the rain! I think your bang on…. especially with a small trailer that little bit of extra space outside is 👌
Our kitchen hangs on the open barn door in back on cleats. Pop up counter on the other door holds toaster oven, airfryer or what not. Nose built in counter does the coffee maker or the cookers so we do not have to go outside if its raining. We stow them inside on the road. That leaves much space inside for a table and 2 little chairs so the beds can be left down. I made a 2X2 frame and screened it for the open back...love it. We found we could modify our screen tent to go over the side door and side of the trailer with no trouble, so no need for an awning...takes 10 minutes to set up. No bathroom, sometimes use a solar shower in our little shower tent, but mostly don't shower at all. We are in the water most camps. Potty cassette is dynomite. Those are my faves!
You should post a video of how you modified the tent. I am getting an already somewhat modified cargo trailer. From a dealer in a few weeks. Would love to see how you did it so maybe I can eventually make one for mine.
Thank you so much for "let's get right to it:. So tired of run on conversations. I just fast forward them. Was undecided about back doors vs swing open. Possible deck on one, though on doors you can tarp (or have made) marine grade canvas over doors & slightly down sides thus giving you covered outdoor patio or outdoor kitchen or shower.
My Hubby and I converted our 6 x 10 cargo trailer that's a similar make and model to yours. We love... 1. The 20 inch clearance 2. That it's completely versatile and minimalist and can still be used as a cargo trailer, if need be. 3. The total cost, including the trailer, was about $5,000.00. 4. We use it more than we ever used our 26ft C class Lazy Daze RV. 5. It's 100% our decor with none of that RV feel. It's so COZY!!! 6. We actually love our outdoor shower but don't usually camp where there are bugs. I sponge bath if there are bugs, LOL! 7. It's easy to tow...weighing in at around 1,700lbs fully loaded. 8. The solar panels. 9. That it has NO wall cabinets. 10. The barn doors and screen that exactly like yours. What we hate... 1. The interior height of 5'7!!! My Hubby doesn't care too much for it really because he's 6'1 and has to crouch a bit but since I am a little under 5'7 it really doesn't bother me at all. We bought the cargo trailer for a move and never considered converting it to a camper trailer. If we were to buy another cargo trailer it would probably be a 6 x 12 with a 6 1/2 ft interior height. Nice video! Do you plan on doing a "What we hate about my cargo trailer conversion" in the future? Oh...cute dog too! Happy Camping!😁
Wow some really good features! Love that you use it more! I really feel that’s the whole point what gets us out there enjoying nature. 👍👍 I was thinking about doing what I don’t like but have to really dig to come up with 10….. 😄 I’d say one of mine would be the trailer size also, although mine is 6.2” inside I really wish it was 7’ wide with the tires under the trailer if that makes sense…. Not sure if they even make them that way. But my trailer was free so it is what it is. Thanks for the great comment!!
Thanks! Definitely a bit tight inside it wouldn’t work for everyone but we generally live outside when camping…. And when I can park it right on the lake 👌😄
GOOD STUFF - I like how you did the uni-strut for the solar. I want to do something similar. I hope you have a more detailed video how you approached it. I'll search your vids... Thanks
Thanks for watching….. Highly recommend the unistrut it was easy to use, keeps the panels protected and I think very flexible if I have to change the panels in the future. Here’s part one of the install- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GZc66FvvPKc.html.
Great Camper, thanks for sharing your ideas! #11 has to be your rear screen keeping out bugs while you enjoy the #10 view. My 4x6 v-nose toy hauler-camper-theater is quite a bit more compact. Front 4x5 deck plus roof rack and hitch rack is extra room for 2KW Inv-Generator, Solar pnl, Awning. Planning a folding room pinned onto my ramp that will be outside galley and inside privy w/shower pan. 3 cabinets hold cooking equip. and the 24"TV/entertainment ctr. Twin tri-fold sofa/bed goes in car making room for my scooter. 5K BTU AC, elec heat and induction cooktop complete the collection (so far) And I pull it with a Scion XD getting 20 MPG (headwind) and 28MPG (tailwind)
Thanks! Yeah those screens are absolutely a must in northern Ontario but like you mentioned it’s so nice to open up those doors to the great views. Wow that sounds like an awesome little build! I would love to see a video of that…. Have to admit I love the smaller trailers the more compact the better, and great gas mileage! Perfect 👍
@@waysoutback I'm now debating about skipping the add-on ramp-room and doing the screens for the scenic view. I've yet to camp anyplace with a view but y'all are an inspiration!
@@waysoutback I've never done a video but I may... The 4x6 is taller than a teardrop and the entertainment center/power options is Great! A comfy bedroom for 1, quite cozy for 2... 6x8 awning adds 50 sq ft, May get the 'room' for it. Trying to avoid the 2 hr setup/take down
@@johnw65 yeah for us the view is such a big part of camping. It probably depends a lot on what your style of camping is…. We also have a clam pop up shelter I kind of like the mobility of moving it to a different spot then where your camping…. Like if you want your trailer in the shade but sit out in the sun etc…. Maybe go with the screens try it out and if you don’t like it you could always add a nice exterior room.
First video of yours that I've seen and I subscribed. I have a 5X10 cargo trailer conversion I did for me. What I love: 1. My outside kitchen - I have a cover for it in bad weather but prefer not smelling what I ate while I try to sleep. 2. bunk beds - in case I invite a friend. 3. Wood burning stove - nice ambiance and I'll never be out in colder than -10C which my winter sleep system can easily handle. 4. Cross ventilation - I have two small port windows high on one side and two small RV windows on the other. Stick a fan in a window instant cool down. 5. My clearance - trailer came with semi-beefy tires and 19 in of clearance stock. Can't wait to match the axle and tires to my 4Runner. 6. Inside height - I can stand in it. 7. Same width as my tow rig - very easy to maneuver in the bush. 8. My outdoor bathroom/shower setup - very private and keeps the humidity out of my trailer. 9. My storage - I have soo much storage! Especially since I have set up my rig and trailer to be a combo package. 10. My locking system so I can leave the trailer to explore. I have multiple locks and cables set up to avoid theft of my trailer.
That sounds awesome…. I absolutely love the idea of a wood stove inside. If I had that it would probably be my number one favourite thing especially camping in the winter. I sure would love to see a video of your setup! It sounds great and similar to mine in that it’s nice and small to get into those back lakes! 👌👍
Well that’s good to know… it definitely was a bit of work to build, but in the end I think it’s worth it… we get a product that is just right for us and our style of camping. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks! It’s really worked for us… we really didn’t want fixed bunks, that way when it’s freezing or pouring outside we can still play cards inside. I also knew I needed a shower 😁
I'm still building out my Isuzu camper but we have close to everything you put in too. Next I want to finish the shower and then add solar. I'm glad yours is working out so well!
So true, I bought them without doing any research. It was just before I converted the trailer. Since I was using it just around town for construction I didn’t really care…. Now I’m just trying to wear them out a bit so I can get some quality tires. Every time I go out they are in the back of my mind….. good warning for everyone looking at tires. Thanks
I want to put a futon type bed in my 5x10 The mattress on the floor works, but would like the option to fold up into a couch to chill in case of bad weather/bugs
Have you seen those benches that have slats… as the bench extends the slats slide out to form a bed…. Seems like a great set up for a fold up couch. You could make it the exact size you needed to fit your futon. Maybe that would work
I just picked up a 6X12 trailer already done. I have the same rear doors. Where did you find the screen? I’m having trouble locating one that size. We have one on the side door and thought the rear would be incredible for air flow and view. Great video!!
Thanks…. Your bang on… In the summer it’s awesome to get that air flowing through the trailer. I bought it off Amazon. If you look for one that is for double doors… Here’s the one I got - www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07RBJPL72/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Hey yep in Canada, I picked the screens up off Amazon. Here’s the one I got - www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07RBJPL72/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Definitely need that to get started 😂 I’d recommend a used one…. Even if it has a bit of damage it’s ok… we are cutting them up and modding them anyways If you want a small one seems more of them available…. I think construction guys upgrade to a bigger trailer quite often.
Hello. Thanks for another nice tour of your conversion. I am curious, where did you find these stabilizer jacks? They need to extend quite a bit to do the job with such a clearance. Thank you.
I picked them up off Amazon I think I maybe list a link to them in the description of my trailer tour video. When level they work great but if I’m on a hill I add 2x4 or two under them….. I’ve been trying to come up with some kind of leg extension I’d carry in my cargo box. Maybe a 6x6 post cut that will slide over the foot…. Not to sure. If you have any ideas I’d appreciate it. 👍
Great video, what size cargo trailer do you recommend, was thinking of a 7'x10' dual wheel. The store bought RV'S seem cheaply made and super expensive, Great video.
Thanks and I completely agree! We just did some light backroads with a friend that has a small store bought trailer after the calking was cracked and the walls were separating due to the flexing. Even light off road I’d recommend a cargo trailer you can’t beat steel, or aluminum welded walls, etc. As for the size I think it really depends on your tow vehicle and your style of camping. The smaller ones are easy to maneuver down the back roads but are tight when building. If I had to do it over I would probably go Aluminum 7’ wide with wheels tucked under so it’s almost the same width as mine by 12’ long. Probably just single axle because I have such a small truck for pulling weight…. Though you get a much better ride with tandem…. When one axle is in a pot hole the other is still on the road. Definitely recommend building your own….. just search rv trailer soft floor on RU-vid 🤯
@@waysoutback Since my last post, I have purchases a new trailer, and now in the planning stage. Purchased a diesel heater and had time to install electric brakes before we received our first 12"+ of snow in cottage country. Will use the winter months accumulating items needed, especially the R/V windows.
0:37 you clearly mean the opposite of what you said. You said you did an "axle over the leaf spring swap" which would lower your trailer You did a really common modification called a spring over the axle swap. SOA. Opposite of axle over spring.
On this older version I was about 2200lbs with 20gal of water, but on my newer version I added about 1000lbs to that. Tongue weight on this one was about 300lbs
@@waysoutback Thanks for the insights. I'm building an emergency communications trailer for disaster work, and paying really close attention to things like tongue weight. The battery pack and inverter account for almost 20% of the useful load by themselves so I really have to be careful.
Not that I can remember they are usually under the table for the majority of the time. Probably would if it was down south in some extreme heat and sun?
Good question! Actually quite a few reasons. But top 3 - Cheap, Built it how I wanted, Much stronger then an RV. I built this all for under 7K. I built in a large water tank, great heater, tons of batteries, 300w of solar and it’s fully insulated, I’ve camped in -38F and showered with no water freezing. It’s solid steel welded structure - my Dad has a small rv and he tries to come on some of the mild trails but his wall seams started opening up because it was flexing so much can’t do it. I am hoping next week to make a video on this very topic….
I have all the specs in my guide that’s for sale… here’s a link. www.waysoutback.com/product/how-to-guide/ If you watch all my videos most of the measurements are in there also… I definitely recommend the layout we really like it. 👍
I haven’t noticed any difference…. It’s a bit harder to pull but I think that’s because more of it is sticking up in the air now. But it’s still very true and straight to pull. I travel quite often on the freeway with it.
