I've seen an interview with Carrie Henn, she said that every year her new students find out that she was the little girl in Aliens and bring DVDs for her to sign. She tells them they should not be watching the movie that it is rated R, but she gets a kick out of it.
I was... 6 or 7 when I saw Aliens 🤣 My mum got me into the films - same goes for the Terminator and Predator movies. I even watched Child’s Play (before it was banned here). The only film that affected me as a kid was IT, and that’s because I was already terrified of clowns 😩
@@wangson it's not a film for kids I agree But there's a kid in it wtf I know there's plenty of horror films with children staring in them but Ive always thought that though ?
@@jackwatsonepic626 Yeah! It's weird...right off the top of my head I think of Friday the 13th part 4: The Final Chapter with a very young Corey Feldman...I've a feeling that some of these kids' parents allow them to act in these films but don't allow them to actually watch them... I'm also certain that there are some very lax parents who allow their TV's to parent their kids instead of spending time with them. I'm happy to say, I wasn't one of those kids! It pissed me off though when my mom or dad would take my brother and I to rent movies when I was 12 and he was 10...they wouldn't even allow us to watch PG-13 films until we actually turned 13!! In retrospect though, I genuinely appreciate the effort that they made. They clearly cared for us.
Personally Terminator is the more amazing of the two considering how broke James was at the time. The man would use a 2 for 1 coupon at McDonalds and save the second Big Mac for the next day so he could eat. %}
Terminator 2 Judgment Day and Aliens are the two greatest sequels of all time. All the subsequent movies in both franchises sucked. I lost interest in Alien 3 during the first five minutes when it was revealed that Hicks, Newt and Bishop were all dead.
In the words of Newt (Rebecca): "AYE-firmative!" If she had survived, that could have led to more sequels - with Newt leading the resistance against the machine.....sorry the Aliens (which made their way to earth, according to "Alien Resurrection") and run into Hick's twin brother Reese on earth, protecting the mother of the resistance fighter, John Connor and a certain Commando known as the T-800.;) Would make a neat cross-over if done properly.
@Jason Lee Trater What about Terminator vs Little Red Ridinghood ? Can't be worse than Dark Fate (at least they didn't lie, what's going to await the viewers). Or Judge Dredd vs Ghandi ? (will probably be a very short one) Or Godzilla vs Bambi ? Oh .. right, that one already exists.
@@andrewmurray1550 The problem with that, given that the machines and the aliens exists in the same universe, is the timeline. Reese was sent back in time in 2029, so if Newt was to meet him during the resistance battles against the machines she would have to arrive at Earth before that date. However, the Hadley's Hope colony was overrun by aliens in 2179, and then there would be some time before she would arrive back on Earth. That's a time gap of at least 150 years that makes it impossible. Further, there is an official timeline to the alien universe, in which Weyland creates his company and the androids. This is featured in Prometheus and continued in Alien: Covenant. So the Armageddeon and rise of the machines does not fit into the Alien franchise timeline. So a cross over with another franchise would make more sense.
@@johnnydarko6187 A day in the marine corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal a banquet, every paycheck a fortune, every formation a parade I LOVE THE CORPS!
These are supposed to be seasoned, professional veterans of several operations yet they are (in order for us to understand that they are soldiers) very stereotypically treated as raw recruits.
Depends .. the first movie is the far superior horror movie, while the second is the far superior action movie, while the SF i s in both just added in as background setting. But yes, it was an exceptional movie and was deservedly successful.
They are two different movies. Alien far better horror and suspense. Aliens, way better action on par with a war movie and even has bits of humor. Alien was almost entirely serious.
Equal parts horror, action and suspense. Aliens is an absolute thrill ride and no Alien film since has captured the essence of the franchise like this one.
An all-time classic. My favorite line is when the Marines are under the nuclear reactor and have to disengage their weapons, Frost says "What are we supposed to use, harsh language?"
@@marccolten9801 Fusion is still a nuclear reaction, but it's the combination of atomic nuclei into a larger nucleus, as opposed to current fission which is the separation of larger nuclei. The risk was that the platoon was under the reactor's primary heat exchangers, which if ruptured due to errant weapons fire (Colonial Marines' standard issue ammo has light armor-piercing, explosive heads), the chain reaction would flash roast the facility as fusion requires extreme heat to (theoretically) fuse the atoms while also producing vast amounts of energy. The explosion at the end wasn't so much a meltdown, but more of the reactor's heat igniting LV-426's atmosphere.
@@truthoftheuniverse4179 and the Irony with it, is they all want to see strong female leader/warrior types in it, and Ripley is pretty much the embodiment of what it takes, starts out afraid, and confronts her fear, takes control and kicks ass,
FireTiger941 completely agree... his score was amazing! He and Cameron nearly came to blows over the delivery of the finally scoring though. Very interesting interview on the blu-ray about that. They didn’t work together again until Titanic because of that.
Aliens and Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan are probably Horner's best scores ever. Horner was best when he created a new sound. Check out Glory (Charging Fort Wagner) and Field of Dreams for some of the amazing work he did. Unfortunately, many of his scores were rehashes of previous work. Especially Clear and Present Danger was a best of James Horner audio reel, but producers loved him for it. They could always temp the movie with previous Horner scores to get an idea of what the soundtrack would be like.
Well, I'm almost 70 so I'll allow the only. But don't forget many geniuses do their best work young and then spend the rest of their long lives looking for a comeback.
You forgot that Apone was also played by a former marine. He was the one that gave military training to the marines in the movie. Also, they split the cast and had the marines (actors) spend some preshoot time together to form a closer knit group. This helped with Weaver and Riser coming in as outsiders. Check out the special editions making of bonus features.
1970's was the best decade. Godfathers 1 & 2, Jaws, Star Wars, The Sting, Smokey & The Bandit, Woody Allen's best films, Close Encounters, The Exorcist, The Omen, Taxi Driver, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, etc. There's many more, but I'll stop here.
Everything came together for Aliens. Director, actors, actresses, producer, musical score and of course those amazing Aliens created by artist extraordinaire, HR Giger. Without his artistry, none of this would've been possible. James Cameron is an amazing director. His vision for Aliens was spot on. His gift was his ability to put everything together. Gale Ann Hurd is a kick ass producer. Without her, none of this would've occurred. Skillful and multi talented. Able to get everything and everyone together. Sigourney Weaver. In my opinion, she is the most perfect actress. She combines talent, skill and knowledge to get her character as believable as possible. A daunting task, but she made it look easy, despite the fact she was at first reluctant to play the role again. She made the movie period. Her acting was flawless in my opinion. Al Mathews aka Apone. He literally served in Vietnam. His veteran status, real war experiences, just gave the fighting parts that much more realism and the thing is, he played it for real. Right down to how his fellow actors utilized each of their weapons. Underated for sure. His cigar was epic. Bill Paxton. Without Bill in this movie, one liners and bits of comedic relief might never have been possible. Bill was a terrific actor. Often under rated. I felt very bad when he passed away. But to quote him from this movie regarding his fight with disease...." game over man " Jennifer Goldstein. This women, being of slight build and not actually that strong, was just amazing in her role as Vasquez. She really had me convinced initially that she did a hitch or two in the Corps. I love her character. Typical Marine. Bravado, macho ass shit and kill everything I shoot. Micheal Bien. I doubt anyone could play the role of Hicks with as much charisma as Bien. After, Terminator, who else was there? The man is drop dead gorgous, funny, super nice and intelligent. His role defined what being a real Corporal in the USMC ought to be. Leadership. The man exuded it in his role. I thought killing off his character was a huge huge mistake in Alien 3. I wanted so much to see him and Ripley get together and take out the Aliens together. HR Giger. Of all the science fiction artist past and present, he is without a doubt my favorite. What sort of mind can create something so unbelievable? Yet, affect everyone that sees his work. The Alien creature is by far the scariest creature ever created. The last time I was scarred by a creature was, " The Creature from the Black Lagoon " made back in the 50's. That creature gave me the willies. Even today, as a grown adult, I am affected by this monster of the deep. Even though I know it's fake. However, the Alien creature, with that iconic elongated head. Razor sharp daggers for teeth. An inner set of teeth. That menacing hissing sound and the slimy wet look. Nothing could prepare me for Alien when I first saw it. The chest burster scene was way scarrier vs that scene in Jaws, where the Chief discovers, that dead body on that drift wood. It popped out and sent people out of their seats, but Alien topped that. It sent people out of the theatre, It was that scary. People went home thinking about it. The fear factors created by HR Giger thru his creation were on a whole new level. I so respect his artistry. I love the Alien design. It appears so real. Like something we would truly discover on some world far away from ours. Only a mind so deep in darkness could conjer up such a creature. Carrie Henn. A unknown and simply plucked off the street quite literally, her screams were amazingly real and yeah, they were real in some scenes. The beauty of James Cameron is his ability to extract very deep stuff from his actors/ actresses. Not easy. Especially with a child, but he did so and the rest, as they say, is history. I thought Carrie did an awesome job in her part. Her connection to Sigouney in real life was very touching. Such respect between two people. Truly amazing. Yes, everything and everyone came together to create the finest example of science fiction film to date. Oh I know there are others, but none will ever surpass Aliens. It literally was a perfect movie. Even today, even within its own Alien franchise, Aliens stands as the finest example of sci fi movie magic. One last note. I happen to believe in life on other planets. I hope one day, when man ventures out to the far reaches of our galaxy and beyond, that we exercise a little humility and remember, respect other life and their right to exist. I often thought about how cruel we were to those Alien creatures. Assuming so much and demonstrating our arrogance and quite frankly, our ignorance when dealing with such magnificent creatures. Perhaps the world they came from was destroyed and they simply looked for what they believed to be an uninhabited planet. One they could start again. Who knows, but mans arrogance knows no boundaries. Personally, I found myself rooting for the Alien creatures in the movie. Too me, they were and are magnificent creatures. Intelligent, brave, team players, defending themselves no matter. *END TRANSMISSION*
Oh God, I spent many nights in bed as a kid, terrified thinking about the Creature from the Black Lagoon! I remember seeing it on a Saturday afternoon UHF Creature Double Feature. Scared the hell out of me!
I absolutely fell in love with Carrie Henn as Newt. Hard to believe she had no previous acting experience of any kind… She was thoroughly convincing. I don’t begrudge her not pursuing an acting career one bit, but she clearly would’ve been great at it. My guess is, her students have been very blessed to have her.
I loved my Aliens toys and was a fan of all the films. Actually got to meet Michael Biehn this year as well, his character portrayal in Terminator and Aliens was very important to my childhood idealization of "what it means to be a man".
That is actually an inside joke. When Jenette Goldstein showed up for the audition, she had no idea what the movie was about. Most other actors did, and were dressed in military outfits. But Goldstein thought it was a movie about illegal aliens, and showed up in regular clothes and makeup.
@@KarlHenryMartinsson Showed up in military outfits?? What? They never had Wardrobe then, did all the actors have to go to an Army Surplus Store before filming and hope for the best😂😂
@@macman975 This is actually a well know movie trivia. You know what an audition is, right? They don't give the actors auditioning costumes. The audition may be months or even a year or more before production really starts. www.cbr.com/aliens-actress-accidental-audition/ Since Goldstein didn't have an agent, that was all the information that she had to go on. While she had seen the film "Alien," she did not know that they were doing a sequel, so she figured that it was for a film about immigration. She told Starlog: “I had seen Alien, but I had no idea this was a sequel. It had been so long ago, it didn’t even occur to me. I thought it was about actual aliens, you know, immigrants to a country. I was wondering why they wanted Americans. I figured the movie was about lots of different immigrants to England.” So she showed up at the audition wearing "high heels and lots of makeup, and I had waist-length hair." She figured out that something was way off when everyone else was wearing army fatigues. It was when she went in read and saw posters for "The Terminator" that she knew that she was really in trouble. In a brilliant twist of fate, though, the nice blouse that she was wearing happened to be sleeveless, which showed off Goldstein's arms. She had taken up bodybuilding recently and it showed in her arms. She later recalled, "'She said, ‘Are you an actress or a bodybuilder?’” Goldstein laughs. “I was a gymnast. I just happened to be in the best shape of my life.'" So they agreed to see her again, only this time she wore army boots and pulled her hair back and everything and eventually, she got the role.
@@KarlHenryMartinsson I know what an audition is. There's plenty of them on RU-vid. You know one thing that they ALL have in common. No one is dressed up!.
One of my favourite action movies during the 80s and 90s. Many a sleepover with my friends involved this movie - I think it had something to do with a couple of us girls having a crush on Michael Biehn.
This movie deeply positively affected me as a child . It seems kind of ridiculous to say but I really think it did. I saw the film when I was 11 years old and at the time I was terrified of scary movies and hated them. My parents were divorced and I was lonely and had trouble knowing how to be a big kid... not yet a teen. I was at a slumber party with friends who had parents that didn’t know how to keep kids from watching late night HBO. 😂 The alien creatures honestly terrified me, but the acid i element kept me watching and it was mesmerizing... the idea that you could fight back and destroy them, outsmart and confront them was so empowering to me as an impressionable youth. As a child I could identify with newt (thought I would not have admitted it at the time) and admired Hicks the confident, reliable soldier I wanted be and Ripley the protector and ultimate hero that rose above any level you thought she was limited to. It was surprisingly powerful influence on me and my self esteem.
It affected me too, only I was much younger. I used to dread the nights my folks would have me spending the night at a friends house. His mom thought ALIENS was suited for all ages and would ask me why I’m not downstairs watching the movie. I was scared of basements after that movie too
Good. It's such a good movie even at the very least and I'm glad that you can trace such positive effects on your life directly to it. 👾👽👽👾👾👾👽🤔😲💣💥❤😀👍❤❗
I've practiced Bill Paxton's voice my whole life and now have it perfect. When things go wrong at work the guys love when I scream "what are we gonna do now man, what are we gonna do?" RIP Bill.
It wasn't just James Cameron who had problems with the film crew. Ridley Scott also had conflicts with the film crew on the set of the original Alien, and at one point even reportedly punched his fist through the ceiling of the Nostromo set out of frustration. Ironically, one of the reasons the Aliens film crew at Pinewood were so resentful of Cameron was because many of them still felt loyal to Scott, even though Scott apparently couldn't stand them either. lol

I have an odd story about the alien toy line. When i was in elementary school a friend and i came up with some new alien creatures for the toy line. Specifically the Bull alien and the Gorilla alien and a few others. We came up with stories and drew detailed pictures of what the looked like. Being kids we sent all this off to the company without thinking to keep proof of it. A few weeks we get a letter saying they appreciate the letter and drawings but they would not be using any of the concepts we came up with. Jump forward a few months and low and behold, a new series of Aliens figures with the exact same look and very similar back story come out.
I met him last year and he was really awesome. Beihn is very friendly and engaging and doesn't seem tired of fans at all. He had some really awesome stories to tell. He said ALIENS was his favorite movie he made, and it is mine as well!
Every time I watch your videos. I cry a little on the Inside. When I instantly transport myself to when I was a child watching these movies on HBO. Or on VHS. When both my parents where alive. I first saw this movie on release at the tender age of 17, with my three schoolmates. I told the girl I had just started seeing about it, and she said we should go see it as a second date, as she enjoyed horror movies. She lasted as long as finding the first “survivor”, with the chest burster, which is also how long the romantic side of our relationship lasted... We left the cinema shortly thereafter, but we did remain friends for another decade or so, until we eventually lost touch. Still, I saw Aliens on the big screen twice in four days: totally worth it! :)
I saw the first two films on first run in the theaters. Astonishing. Sat in the front row and was really really impressed. I have all the films, but the ones that still thrill me are the first two, even on the small screen. I wanted to get a model of the Sulocco but never found one. By the way, does anyone know what that ship's name means? The name of the original ship is Italian for "our man." Which was a foreshadowing that the ship and the robot Ashe would follow company orders no matter what -"All other operational priorities are rescinded." So, too bad for the crew. But what does Sulocco mean?
I distinctly remember watching commercials for the Alien toy line back in 1992. I thought the toys looked really cool even though my parents wouldn’t let us watch Aliens. I always thought it was strange that toy companies used to make toy lines based off Rated R movies. That’s something you don’t see anymore.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie!!!! Loved seeing a strong female character that wasn’t overly sexy or sassy (Princess Leia was a bit of a diva). Helen Ripley was smart, competent, brave, and kind. Even the semi-chauvinistic boys in my life (in the south in the 80s) had respect for her. No sex jokes or put downs from them. Just respect, which was so refreshing. Didn’t like how the 3rd movie and the rest went. Would have liked a happy ending for Ripley. She deserved some peace.
I like Aliens. I think it's a really great film and I've watched it a number of times. But there is NO WAY IN HELL that it is a better film than the original, Alien! That film was utterly brilliant and perfect in my estimation!!
FYI, related to your item Four: While the action-figure merchandising for _Aliens_ [1986] in the early-'90s didn't do so well, the earlier attempt at marketing an _Alien_ [1979] action-figure was brief before being squashed like the T-800 near The End of _The Terminator_ later. The action-figure xenomorphs were quickly pulled from the shelves, while many child-bearing Earthlings didn't think it was a great idea to market action-figures from an MPAA-rated "R" film to kiddies too young to see the film (without accompanying parent or legal guardian). They were much larger than many of the other action-figures they were making and selling in those days. And it had a button that made its xenomorph mouth pop out of its mouth hehehehehe I must've been 8 or 9 at the time and hardly remember, that It was removed from the shelves so fast it was astonishing, but not surprising: _Alien_ [1979], unlike _Star Wars_ [1977], was rated-"R". Wow, no wonder that happened at the time hehehehehe
What made Ripley so strong was her simmering terror at what these creatures might do if unleashed. It wasn't a "girl power" vibe: It was a "THIS way or no one survives and I will not let that happen" vibe. As stated, this first sequel equaled the original and surpassed sequel expectations!
Carrie Henn, the young actress, was 10 years old when Aliens was filmed. The age of her character, Newt, wasn’t mentioned in the movie. But when Ripley followed Newt into her hiding place, she found a second grade award plaque featuring Newt, which the character would have received at approximately the age of seven. That suggests Newt was seven or a bit older, but certainly not twelve years old as mentioned in a later novelization.
Dude, I WAS a kid in 1992 and those toys were really unfortunate. My brother and I got the Ripley and Queen toys. My friends and I dreamed about ALIENS figures for years before they came out and they were indeed a disappointment. I remember the Evac Fighter toy showing up as a prop Christmas gift for Captain Picard's children in Star Trek: Generations. I agree about ALIEN 3 toys and how colorful they could have been. In fact, in 1994, while on a road trip I read the novelization of ALIEN 3 and the movie finally made sense to me. I had a hard time differentiating the secondary characters and background performers. But in the book, they all had names and personalities. I love it to this day. Thanks Minty!
Watching Newt's autopsy scene from Alien3 made me so sick, I struggled for the rest of the day to keep from throwing up (I was dry heaving). We saw it Sunday, opening weekend with my mom and step-dad. Going back to my dad's house and not wanting to cry about it (didn't want to stop watching Rated R movies) SUCKED!!! Alien3 still chaps my ass!
Took my Dad to see this movie when it first came out. He always fell asleep in the movie theater. He didn't fall asleep in this one. After he said, "Now that's what I call a real movie!" Great cast, great sets and great direction. Well done. Thanks, Minty!
One of my favourite Sci Fi movies, I know it word for word. Currently listening to the Audible drama Aliens: River of Pain, which is about Hadley's Hope and the last stand
One of the things that kills me about movies like this, and so many others? They ALWAYS run into trouble down on the planet and NEVER think: hey, maybe someone should stay on board the ship in case there's trouble lol At least in the last promethius movie, even though it sucked, they DID leave people on board to come down and rescue them.
@Bealzer Mcgraw yeah, it was far from great. Plot holes you could drive a truck through.....I mean, yeah, ok, alien world, let's fly down there and go walking around without any sort of breathing apparatus or protective suits on. "it's got breathable air" fine by me! lolol.
Fair call, but if people made good decisions there wouldn't be much going on in a horror movie. "Nah, let's NOT split up and let's use good quarantine techniques while we're at it."
@@yowie0889 But this is the kind of horror movie I want to see! There's no reason something truly terrifying shouldn't be able to get the better of even the most prepared and intelligent team of people.
I saw this movie at the theater with my dad when it came out. The part where the Chest Buster came out of that little kid hung on the wall scared the crapp out of me. This is definitely one of the big great action movies of the eighties along with a female hero and a movie where part 2 rivals the 1st film
I remember being 10 when my folks took my cousin and I to see this movie. I never knew until then how nice of a lining my jacket had up close. I still can’t watch this movie decades later. ☺️
One of my top 5 films of all time. It's the reason I got an Alien tattoo. FYI: Xenomorph isn't the proper name for the creature, it was just the one that Gorman applied to it during the briefing early in the film.
Minty talked about Marines training the cast to act like Marines. Fun fact: Al Matthews (Apone) was a real Marine in Vietnam. He was the first black man in the Marine Corps to receive a field promotion to the rank of sergeant. He was the real deal. RIP Sgt. Matthews.
He's coming in, I feel safer already. I guess she don't like the cornbread either. None taken. What're we supposed to use, harsh language? Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen. No. Have you? Ultimate badass! So many great lines!
I saw this in the movies when it was 1st released. It was scary. Alien and Aliens are two of my favorite Horror/Sci Fi movies. BTW, Ridley, was a perfect strong woman character. She remained a woman and didn’t need to insult or put down men. I hated Alien 3 because it kills all the characters we loved. The rest are not worth mention, except for Alien; Resurrection for being a try hard.
This my favorite movie of all time I have insomnia so when I couldn't sleep I would watch it. I knew the lines by heart and could tell by music what scene was happening. No one else could have been Ripley, Sigourney was the and is the best. And no I didn't have a life just weary from no sleep
Isn't it strange that both Aliens & Terminator 2 movies were sequels & the best of their series & both done by James Cameron, pity he couldn't do a Titanic 2, maybe set in the future, say on that fictions ship Clive Palmer is still not building ?.
