I saw this movie alot on HBO in 1996. Jeremy Irons was awesome as Simon Gruber. Those riddles and puzzles were great. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson had great chemistry.
@@robertlangmuir86 I have always thought this of De Niro. He is basically always the same character with a slight mood change, but not big enough to matter. Then I saw Awakenings and saw his range. But other than that, I find him fairly overrated.
I have NEVER understood people laughing at Die Hard 2 and saying it was crap. It's my favorite one. It's so fun, snowy/Christmasy, has a cool setting, a scary concept that could happen to any of us, and it's just a perfect action movie.
it's dark, has pretty much the same level of gnar, action as the 1st, is more Christmassy than the 1st, Solid sequel. John is tested physically, where the 1st, it was mentally, the 3rd, whit. the 4th, tested the audience, the 5th, TESTED THE FRANCHISE. 2 is 1 of the best sequels, the 5th is crap, 4, passable.
For me it could never rise above being "Die Hard 1, but at a airport." It really is just the first film all over again. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually just re-used the same script but just added the new setting. I'm usually ok with sequels being a repackaged take on the original film. But for some reason Die Hard 2 isn't exciting enough to overcome quite literally being "Die Hard, again." First, it's largely kind of boring imo. After the first act and first big action beat the narrative just kind of lulls and spins its wheels without much energy or momentum. We're just waiting for the next action scene. I've seen the film numerous times and the film still can't really recall the film in any great detail. Airport. Terrorists. A shoot out, the money shot of McClane using the ejector seat...that's really it. The action itself isn't as memorable or tense as the first film, either - just generic boom-boom bam-bam stuff without the expertly executed shot composition, blocking, and editing found in McTernan's films. The villains are more bland, too. Eh, I WANT to love Die Hard 2. It's just very un-exciting.
People sometimes act like we MUST like the first Die Hard the most. But I've always liked the third one the most. Samuel Jackson and Jeremy Irons were absolutely fantastic, and the story was excellent. The original film is my second favorite, but I definitely love the third one the most. Thanks Minty.
I actually enjoy all of them, for many reasons, but, yea, John McClane is a great character. Too bad we will not be seeing more of him. Need a box set of all 5...🤓
First is the best for me for lots of reason, it's definitely more solid film wise. But I love DH 3 no doubt and even with its flaws (not many but there're there), I still think it's a great film. Its strengths make up for its weaknesses almost enough to displace no. 1 for me. Almost...
It's no act. The first is much better. Plus, I love how they gloss over the water bottle puzzle. Just terrible. Plus the forced white/black differences.
One of the best action films of its time it still holds up today and whoever thought Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson together deserved a massive raise
I've met Bruce Willis several times and the first was the day before he went to start filming Die Hard With A Vengeance the second time was outside a restaurant in L.A. He was very kind both times and I wish him and his family the best. Bruce has brought so much joy to all his fans. 😻❤
Simon and Hans are clearly 2 of the best movie villains of all time. They've got that sort of odd "Lawful Evil" thing going on, where it almost seems like they'd be alright guys to have lunch with, so long as they weren't at work.
Gosh this movie is freakin fun. It was a good idea to break up the formula, the chemistry between Willis and Jackson is great and the pacing is on point. Also thank you Minty for another awesome video :)
I liked him as John Tuld in Margin Call. Also cant forget Scar in the Lion King and he makes a pretty decent Alfred Pennyworth in the current DCU movies
@@susannpatton2893 how did you watched Star Wars? :) Was episode 1 your very first Star Wars movie? I view the first one as a prequel to the one I watched first, its that simple.
Die Hard with a vengeance is my favourite by far, the action is great, the character dynamic is brilliant.. i love this one, great video as always Minty!
I watched this so many times as a kid. Been ages now but man I'm going to watch it tonight. That's what i love about your channel Mark! If I'm struggling to pick a movie you always remind me if the greats haha. Appreciate you mate 😊
Saw this in the theater with a friend and my dad when I was about 12. One of the best times at the movies I ever had. A roller-coaster ride from start to finish. Willis and Jackson are great together.
The movie where I first got to know of Jeremy irons and Samuel L. Jackson. Both were fantastic in this movie and easily one of the best for Bruce Willis, and he would star with Jackson again in the equally fantastic Unbreakable movie.
The other thing with DieHard 2 was that John was no longer a NY detective, but an officer/detective with LAPD, then in DieHard with a Vengeance he is back as a NY detective.
This movie’s great! Loved seeing Coleen Camp(the maid in Clue) and the idea for the liquid explosives was really cool. When that nerd guy puts just a little of each on the paperclip and then throws it in the corner 💥 then everybody freaks the fxck out at him 😂
That fat bomb tech nerd guy was awesome. Remember later when they try to make him evacuate and he learns kids are still in danger and says "I'm stayin".
Die Hard With A Vengeance is the best Die Hard movie hands down ... But this is set at Christmas time... they even mention it in the beginning... it's not Christmas Eve and there happens to be a December heat wave in NYC... Great video as always Minty😃👏👏👏
I definitely put it on par with the first movie and i felt that it took chances and dared to break the die hard rules unlike the second which totally played everything safe and probably why it did fall flat.. the main three villains stood out and the female villain love interest of simons was played beautifully by being silent and deadly was truly memorable (even though her name isn’t 😉) truly a great movie
@@DavidLLambertmobileI have seen it on die hard box set.. it does feel out of place tho but I can see what they were trying to do with it. I have to agree with minty tho the theatrical ending is more fitting in my humbles..
@@Trashman702 don’t get me wrong I still think it’s a good movie just a bit too similar to the first one..I like the twist of the military team tho pesky villains haha
This is just a perfect action movie. Nuff said 😆 But seriously, John McTiernan has put the same effort he did in the first one. The script is well written (if you ignore the goofs), the characters are perfectly written, the chemistry between Willis and Jackson is crazy. All in all, Die Hard 3 cemented itself into legendary status. My personal favorite scene is the opening, that explosion out of nowhere without any buildup is just phenomenal. Also, given permission to ride thru Central Park was something I never expected. Also also, Vajna is pronounced more like Vaina, he's hungarian and J is pronounced differently🙂
Of all the Die hard movies, this is the best and my favorite. I remember walking near Central Park and seeing a prop of the taxi coming out of the park. This movie is non stop action. I can watch this movie again and again and never get bored.
Have you done a 10 things for Idiocracy yet? Tried looking for one and no luck. If not, I think you should! I'm sure you've probably seen it based on your content, but if not, it is a must watch. What was supposed to be a dystopian futuristic satire is borderline prophetic in 2023. I feel like it should be required curriculum right next to Fahrenheit 451 and Animal Farm. Love your content! Been following for a while now! You review the best deep-cut movies from back in the day, and it's awesome!
The panel truck that got flipped by the first bomb in the movie Atlantic Courier was the same brand that the Hans Gruber gang used in the first Die Hard.
Has anybody ever noticed how it looks like a big fight was cut out between McClane and Targo? After Targo is tripped by the chain it cuts away to another scene then it cuts back, McClane whips Targo with a chain a couple of times then it cuts to Targo all bloodied and beaten on the floor with the chain around his neck. It's as if a massive fight has taken place and then finished with McClane choking him with the chain, that's always bugged me
@mikeadams7904 I'm from the UK and I remember seeing this film in the cinema, there was a scene in the movie at the end when our two heroes get on the ship and a wire snaps cutting a henchman in half. I vividly remember seeing him being sliced in half at the cinema but when it came out on DVD it was cut. So they probably edited or cut a chunk of the fight
I know what you mean, the Touchstone pictures VHS/DVD version was atrociously edited and dubbed, but I've had a US, Australian and German version of the film and they're all uncut but that scene is still terribly edited. As far as I know, no version has ever featured that fight in full, but there's definitely something missing because it's so terribly edited. He had a violent fight in Die Hard 2, which resulted in McClane stabbing the guy in the eye with an icicle, so I can't imagine it's much worse than that
God bless Bruce and his family. I saw this movie opening weekend and it was fun to watch with a crowd. Would loved to have seen one more Die Hard directed by John McTiernan to wrap up the franchise.
This is by far my favorite of the series. It still does have some Christmas references with McClane saying he was looking for a fat jolly guy with 8 reindeer, and the shoplifter kid saying "all the cops are into something, it's Christmas you could steal city hall!"
I saw this film at the cinema when it first came out and was-BLOWN-away !!! GREAT time at this movie, car chases,explosions,gun-fights and a-GOOD-villian, Never a dull moment. LOL.
I watched Die Hard many times on TV, and on VHS while a kid, then got to watch Die Hard with a Vengeance in the movie theatre. Man, I was completly blown away. This movie is still a master piece. Excellent story. SLJ once again stole the show.
I work in the Federal Reserve building depicted in this movie. The gold is really there. Its the largest gold vault in the US, even larger than Fort Knox. And when you are down in the vault, you can hear the subway going by. However, the subway tunnel is much further away than what is shown in the film. In fact, that Wall Street stop was a fake. The real one is several block further south. When they were building the fake subway stop and filming the scenes there, Bank staff were watching out of the windows. One thing that drives us crazy is how easily the bad guys entered the building. I assure you there is no way you are getting in, just by saying you have “an appointment”.
I saw it in the movie theatre when it came out. I thought it was great, although maybe 15 minutes too long. Gotta search it out to watch again! Thanks Minty, that was great ( and as ever, *great* intro graphics ! )
Here's what I like about the Die Hard movies, at least the first 4, I haven't seen the 5th one. There's a natural progression to them: the first one McClain deals with saving a building, the 2nd one deals with McClain having to save an entire airport. The 3rd one deals with McClain having to save a city, and the 4th one deals with McClain having to save a country.
5 was pretty bad. It was more about his son and John was just in for the ride. And it feels nothing like Die Hard. Its just a mindless action movie that happens to be connected to John.
@HealthHorror yea, I had read those things. And I saw how bad the critical reception was as well as the audience score and thats why I never bothered watching it, it just felt like little else than a money grab.
One more bit of trivia, the credits to this movie will say "South Carolina Crew." Despite still being in New York in the film, some of the movie was shot in Charleston, SC (where I'm from). The biggest scene, but not the only scene shot here, was Bruce and Samuel L. falling off the bridge onto a cargo ship. That bridge was the Grace Memorial Bridge built in 1929 (next to it, was a similar but wider Pearman Bridge, built in 1966). Both bridges were blown up once the Ravenel Bridge (a suspension bridge) was built in 2005. At the time, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson were filming here, I was in high school and working at a movie theater called The Ultravision (which was torn down in 1999). That's when Samuel L. Jackson walked into the theater. There's a story to that I won't share now, but I will say he came to see the movie Jason's Lyric, and was very friendly to us. Too bad smartphones weren't around yet, because I would have gotten a picture with him, since it wasn't long after Pulp Fiction shot him to the A-list. People just didn't walk around, or go to work with a camera in their pocket back then.
Me top. I was a kid in the 90s and this movie was on cable almost every day I’m glad it was because it was great It took me a few viewings to figure out the water jug puzzle
When this came out I was watching it for months, I don’t think I had seen the first one and I had seen the second one not knowing what it was, I was very young at the time. When this came out it was awesome and something I had never seen done before and Bruce, Samuel L and Jeremy Irons were great in it! Thanks for doing this one Minty!
This is actually the very first Die Hard I watched in the Cinema. It also is the first to deviate from the one man army and single location of the first 2 movies. It is my favourite of the Die Hard Sequels and Jackson is a great foil for Willis. Coming out the year after Pulp Fiction it has a neat wrap connection with the "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo."
If you notice in the opening scene when the words " Die hard " appears it uses the 3 towers to the bridge for the Roman numerals 3 for die hard 3. But of course minty you didn't notice it even though the producer's etc put it right in front of us to see it's the 3rd Installment of the franchise.
That Viagra joke at the end was awesome. 😂 I did enjoy this installment of Die Hard, but I actually did like the second one too. One fact that could have been covered, and sure how you could do it without angering the RU-vid censors, was the scene in Harlem with the sign which was how McClain and Zeus met. That scene was actually filmed in Harlem. But the sign was blank during filming, and the words were inserted in post production for safety reasons.
Die Hard With A Vengeance is hardcore and badass! That's why Die Hard 4.0 tried to replicate and went over the top to try and surpass the 3rd Die Hard movie.
I absolutely loved that movie, was lots of fun. I agree with you, it does feel fresh take on the character and his story arc. The only thing I can imagine why people didn’t think so might be because of movie trend at the time.
I was 16 when this movie came to the dollar theater for a long run. My best friend & I saw DHWA six times, two of which were in the same day. It was a cheap something to do back then that was better than burn gas driving around. This was an ultra modern movie theater in 1992 or so then was switched over to a dollar theater when they took out the left half or the theaters to build out more strip mall shops. Sorry, memories just came flooding back. That friend passed away 2006 from static fibrosis which I knew he had from the day we became friends on the bus as 12 year olds.
I love all THREE "Die Hard" movies. I can't pick a favorite though. It's really great they ended this as a TRILOGY and didn't make any more movies under "Die Hard", because they would have really sucked ass, and then I'd just have to pretend they didn't exist.
The second die hard was my personal favorite, because they filmed part of it in my town. They were following the snow storm that was going through town. They didn't shoot it all on a sound stage back then. Under Siege was a rip of Die Hard. Funny.
I saw this when it came out in theaters as a kid, and I remember being amazed at how the Die Hard movies kept finding new ways to make the majority of police officers seem like Keystone Kops.
I love the first, I love the third, but I still really love the 4th, Live Free or Die Hard. Justin Long and Timothy Olyphant were great and we saw an older McClane who hasn’t done anything like this in years but proves when needed he can kill them all.
Die Hard 1 McClane saves a building Die Hard 2 McClane saves an airport Die Hard 3 McClane saves a city Die Hard 4 McClane saves the internet Die Hard 5 McClane saves us from nuclear annihilation. What could have happened in Die Hard 6? McClane saves his cancer treatment facility after getting back from Chernobyl.
This one is my favorite but it is also the one I seen the most times as it was in either HBO or Cinimax back in the day when "Prime Star" was a thing. One of the first small subscription based small satellite dishes. It played constantly. Love this shit.
Laurence Fishburne was originally supposed to play Powell in the original. DH3 was supposed to have set pieces similar to the original, but nyc don’t like the idea of its city being violently portrayed, on film, so they refused to allow filming until certain violent elements were removed from the script. This movie is pretty much a love letter to nyc, as it seems the city itself is a character in the film. Also, Last Action Hero is not a bad movie. It just got released right after Jurassic Park and subsequently failed at the box office. Arnold himself said he is receiving residuals from it now.
