As someone who lost a parent at a young age I have to agree. I just wasn't the same person, you weren't going to see the same ten year old doing what all the other kids did
I was just saying the same thing before I saw your own comment. My dad died when I was 13, and my older brother died when I was 16, and both times I was practically a zombie for a while instead of the class clown I normally was as a kid!
I was gonna say the same thing. I've known a few kids who changed for a while when their parents died. They got serious, deep, philosophical, really into their own minds and trying to figure things out. A lot like Mark
13:43 I wonder if someone saw this poster thought it was a family film but then saw the R rating at the bottom side of the poster and was like wait what
I remember watching this as a young kid and being like somewhat terrified of Macaulay Culkin, and also confused as to what was wrong with him. I was probably far to young to understand what was going on. Nonetheless he definitely disturbed my 5 year old mind.

@@dannymiller7187 Why is a 5 year old watching an R-rated movie?
@ Well then you probably would have not liked my father because I was four and five watching R-rated movies courtesy of him. I'm like a movie expert because of that. Predator, Terminator, and Terminator 2 Judgment Day are three of my favorite movies.
If only Macauley Culkin had been able to make more films like the Good Son as he grew up. Not necessarily evil characters, but more serious types of films.
Culkin was GENIUS casting. This is supposed to be a psychopath who charms everyone around him by playing the "good son," despite being rotten on the inside--so what better actor to use than a beloved child star? Especially one who had gotten us to root for him in a comedy where he burns and stabs people? Mac's fame for being the adorable little scamp makes it believable that only Elijah Wood knows the real "him" behind the blonde boyish facade. The movie doesn't need to spend time making us believe that Culkin's character can get away with murder, and can then focus more time on how creepy Culkin can be when no one is watching. Oooh, sinister!
I sort of agree about Elija's character acting like an older person, but let's look at the fact he lost his mother that he loved. It's the type of thing that would change the behavior of a child. I'm using that as a reason he doesn't act like the child that he is.
I agree. Elijah’s character was a little more hardened by sadness and bitterness by his mother’s death. That’s a lot for a kid to deal with at that age. ❤️
That's exactly what I was thinking when he brought up Elijah's character acting older. Like the kid lost his mom and is grieving, do you expect him to still act like some happy, carefree child? lol
My mother died when I was 12 in a traumatic fashion that I witnessed firsthand. I can assure you Elijah Wood's acting and mannerisms are spot on. You're forced to grow up literally overnight. Notice how during the scenes of the funeral it's Elijah basically by himself surrounded by adults who all of course care for him, but aren't really all that concerned about him. That's 100% what my experience was. Similar to the movie, my father had to leave town right after my mother died but he took me with him. Mark (Elijah) is simply going through the motions of life and hasn't had a chance to grieve because not only has his life changed forever but now he's dealing with a psychotic cousin. Oh to be the therapist that has to work with Mark after this gauntlet of catastrophic events haha. Sorry for the long reply, but you're all correct in your thoughts on why his character was acting older. I saw this movie about 3 years before my mom died and have always identified with Mark in how he dealt or rather didn't deal with grief after such a horrible life event of losing his mother.
Absolutely. A real life example: When Princess Alix of Hesse was six years old, in 1878, her mother and younger sister died of diphtheria within less than a month of each other. The trauma completely changed her personality, she became introverted, melancholy and serious, and even though those traits were idealised in the Victorian era, hers were seen as excessive. She would only ever go back to being extroverted, chatty and smiling when around her closest family and friends.
The mark character was so serious and seemed 40 years old because he was an introspective withdrawn kid to start with. Then his mother died, and he was sent to go live with strangers who had an insane serial killer kid. I think the character was well written, and in real life, would have been very much like what you see in the movie. When I was 8 people used to tell me I acted 70. Sadness and trauma age the mind.
Totally disagree about the Mark character. He was supposed to be overly serious & mature. That gave Henry the leverage to try and blame everything on Mark. Henry was just a “normal kid” being naughty while Mark was a little adult. Also, I’m a teacher and I assure you...there are LOTS of kids who act like 40 year olds. Idk why adults think all kids are fun loving and inarticulate. That’s a myth.
@Europa: The Last Battle on Bitchute dot com Every time I see you make ONE comment on RU-vid, I'm going to tell TWO white children about how "White culture" is really just black culture with the serial numbers rubbed off. E.g. today I told my neighbor's daughter that Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" is really just a Bo Diddley song with lamer lyrics and less guitar.
The movie feels similar to _The Bad Seed_ back in the mid 50's. It's about a mother trying to find out if her own daughter is capable of murder, after an incident with a fellow student. It's incredibly underrated, and worth checking out.
Yes i made a comment about it to the good son is just a remake but a good one Mintyshould of talked about it but he may not know hes just a kid after all
I’ll never forget seeing the previews for this when I was 6 years old. I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure I cried after the commercial when it was over. I just couldn’t comprehend a child killing his family and it deeply disturbed me. Now it’s just another movie. Boy, I miss that innocence..
This was one of those VHS movies for me that my mom randomly brought home from the convenience store. We were't allowed to watch rated R moves so she obviousy just saw Mac and thought it was a kid's movie. I thought it was brilliant acting as a child when I first saw it and this is still a "go to" favourite for myself and my husband. I screamed when I saw you did this Minty!!! SO GREAT! Also the first time I heard the F word in a film. Such memories!
This is the type of role that keeps a kid from being type cast. Both young men are very believable in their roles. This is why they'll be remembered, at least by those who can appreciate their craft - acting. Would love to see Macauley in more movies. I hope he's doing well. Elijah continues to shine. ❤❤
I'll bet you anything that more than a few kids in my generation were taken to this by mistake. Mac Culkin = for the kiddies, amirite? I'll bet you also that some of them considered it _an instruction manual._
No surprise about Siskel & Ebert's comments on the film, as they tended to hate & trash horror films, & often gave ridiculous & stupid reasons as to why they thought a movie was bad.

Also, one of their criticisms was that the movie wasn't made for kids?? Uh, last I checked it was rated R.......................NOT PG! C'mon, S & E!
I remember going to see this movie with a friend the weekend it came out. We knew it was going to be a bit disturbing but we didn't know how much it would hit home. We went to school with a kid who was just like McCauley's character who displayed these same sociopathic tendencies. While watching the "Highway Henry" scene we both looked at each other because the kid we knew had talked about wanting to do that. As the film went on and on the similarities where astonishing. A few weeks later we got word the kid had been sent to a group home for displaying all this same behavior from The Good Son. If you have kids, be very in tune with their mental well being. Last we heard the guy is 45 years old now and his been incarcerated for 20 years for manslaughter.
Is there any news reports about the guy? Like what's his name? I'd like to do some research on this guy's history, it's not everyday you hear about crazy stories like what you mentioned, it's interesting
@@smol_fries7774 I'd love to give you the name of the person but I could get in trouble for harassment. The stories go even deeper. Once on the way home from school he invited us into his backyard. He shot a squirrel, gutted it out and grilled it on the family bbq grill while manically laughing at us. My buddy went home and told his Mom what happened. I didn't say anything to my parents, I figured this was what kids did around these hick towns for kicks, I was new to the area. Another time on a hot summer day, we decided to walk to the super market, the asphalt was hot and I could feel it cooking through my chuck taylor converse hi tops. The same crazy kids house was on the way. He saw us and said he wanted to say sorry for the last incident and asked us in his side yard for a cold beer (shouldn't of been drinking at 16). But I had one anyway. It cooled me off instantly. He asked "What to see something cool?". Before we could answer he dug up a shoebox of the dirt. He opened it up and it was a dead bird. Smelled awful. He danced around with it like it was a prize trophy or something. After that I always took the long way to school and back. Was mortified.
@@vectorhold6489 Damn, it's all very interesting, I feel like I've met crazy kids like that before but I just don't know of they're whereabouts to this day, and if you would've told me his name I wouldn't have said anything to anyone, I'm not a reporter, I just like investigating on crazy people and they're bizzare public history
I really enjoy the movie! I have problems with it but I think the performances are fantastic and the third act is sublime. I never cared about Home Alone and all that so it was cool seeing Culkin play such a devious role, but Elijah has always been my favorite. Glad to see he's so involved with the horror genre now.
@@drphot6050 I can't believe grown people liked "Home Alone"! The kid proved to be a terrible actor in it. Things like this movie and My Girl showcased him as a much better actor.
Minty, the difference between Kevin and Henry is that Kevin is just misunderstood whereas Henry on the other hand is just plain evil from start to finish. SIMPLE AS THAT.
i've absolutely LOVED this movie since I was a kid. I remember cheering like I was at a football game when the mom let go of Kevin's hand. I'm sure to some its a controversial decision....but when you think about the fact that he just basically admitted to killing Richard AND attempted to kill his own mom, she knew what she had to do. Not an easy decision by any means, but necessary. This movie was wonderfully written, directed, and acted by the entire cast.
When I was 17 I had to move in with my father's family. My 11 year old cousin was very much like the Good Son. He even talked like him. He woke me up with a loaded weapon pointed up my nose and blamed stolen beers on me. He later grew up, robbed a hospital, and somehow ended up a marine. Now he looks like a serial killer.
I had this neighbor kid who acted a lot like Henry, he was nice and friendly to his parents but when they weren’t around he was a sadistic foul mouthed little shit who often beat the crap out of his little brother and liked to torture animals among other things, I often had to babysit them, I really had to refrain from hitting him because he was such a violent little psycho, I wanted to tell his parents how twisted he was but I felt bad because they were such nice people, eventually his mother saw his messed up behavior during a fishing trip when he started stabbing a fish, and they got him professional help and he’s a better person now because of it.
Yeah, I was trying to remember his last name in Goonies, but couldn't right away, so I went with Rudy. Besides Bran Walsh snapped his fingers and killed half of life in the Universe.
yeah, they almost talked my dad into taking me, my sister and brother out of seeing "Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend." jerks. I wonder if they get to critique Hell... "Sky Den.... that "Hell" comment was a bit too far."
They hate slasher movies because they cant wrap their head around needless violence and try to take literal meaning from them like come on guys, nobody is seriously seeing Friday the 13th and thinking "well gee, everything's trying to kill me! Better stay inside! Thanks jason!
Elijah Wood is one of those actors I will watch in absolutely anything. He is just such a good actor. I’d love to see Macaulay Culkin back on the scene too. He’s a quirky eccentric kinda guy.
One head cannon I had was, Henry didn’t die but lived somehow and grew up to become Mark Whalburg’s character in FEAR. He, again, somehow survived and would go on to be the stalker in Prom Night or the villain in The Hitcher. Too many movie nights brought that into my head I suppose.
Yes, at 47 I vaguely remember the title and have never seen it. My parents even owned a video store when I was young. Seems this shouldn't have been missed.
I wasn’t aware of the movie until I was 13 looking up Macaulay Culkin’s IMDb page and it came on tv shortly after I read about it, even though I was 6 when it was released, I don’t remember any news articles, reports or anything like that at the time surrounding Culkin playing such a dark role as a child actor.
I first saw this movie when I was 8. I had seen a lot of Macauley Culkin movies so I assumed that this one was no different from his others or that he'd be the protagonist but boy was I wrong. I had been watching horror movies since I was like 3 or 4 years old so it didn't disturb me but it definitely showed me a different side of Culkin and how far his acting talents could go. Now I like to tell my friends about this movie and blow their minds lol
Probably because it’s pretty common knowledge, and Minty tends to report on the more unknown facts / trivia behind the movies he reviews. I remember when it first came out in 1993... I was 10 years old and it was all anyone ever mentioned... and besides, they almost look like twins lol. Wonder if she ever appeared in anything else besides The Good Son..?
@@SmokeyMcPotProductions Yeah, she voiced his little sister in "Wish Kid". I think that's all she did though. Then Rory who appears as Richard in the photograph went on to have his own career.
I don't know why people didn't like this film. I saw it back then and I liked it. I was about 12 or so at the time. I was also a fangirl of Elijah Woods and liked seeing an evil Culkin. lol I also didn't have an issue with Woods' character since he was depressed and down after his mother's death, so I can see him acting really serious because of that.
I still remember my mother buying the VHS release with the first type of image on the cover. She also thought that it might have been another Culkin's comedy movie given his mischievous look on the cover. Although being 8/9 years old at the time, I was really impressed with Culkin's skills as an actor, changing from a comedy style to a more somber and chilling one and really liked Wood's performance as well. I cannot say that I watched it often as other movies during my childhood but when I wanted a more 'serious' movie that was my choice. A very good movie overall. Thank you very much Minty! Keep up your work!
MacCauley Culkin: Hanging out in France with friends, going out partying. Hanging out in California with friends, going out partying, and doing podcasts. The rest of the time hanging out in the Midwest (US) with the RedLetterMedia guys, watching terrible horror/fantasy films for RU-vid. Me: Eating a Hot Pocket, in a bathrobe, while surfing You Tube...
I caught the very ending of this movie when I was a little kid, where she lets go of her son and lets him fall from the cliff. Just that scene without any context disturbed the hell out of me lol
Watch the movie "Party Monster" Macaulay Culkin plays real life murderer Michael Alig. He does a great job in a role that you wouldn't have thought he'd be in.
@@tomunderhill8037 I absolutely agree, though I wonder if Minty has a certain time frame in mind when it comes to his reviews... as most of his uploads are in films from the mid to late 80s and all throughout the 90s... and if memory serves, Party Monster was released in 2003 or 2004. Regardless, I think it would make for a great video. Anyone who’s a fan of Party Monster really should check out the documentary or the “Shockumentary” as it’s called, that came out in 1999. The theatrical film was based off of a combination of it and James St James’ book Disco Bloodbath. But for anyone not too familiar with the story behind the Club Kids, the documentary goes a bit deeper than the movie, and it’ll really give you an appreciation for the choice in casting for the film. Culkin and Green nailed their roles in everything - from their looks and mannerisms, down to their vocabulary. Even the actor who played Angel looks like the real dudes freakin’ twin. Definitely worth checking out if you liked the movie.
I absolutely love your videos and it's so awesome that you have your very own action figure. 😎 The movie "The good son" is loosely based on the movie "The bad seed" First filmed in black and white then remade in colour but it that was about an evil little girl. Plus Macaulay Culkin's real life sister "Quinn Culkin" played his sister in "The good son"..... another one of Kit Culkin's demands. 😕 Kit Culkin worked his son almost to death with movie after movie, that's why Macaulay's last movie was "Richie Rich" He retired because he was completely burnt out from working all the time and really needed a break. Unfortunately it's an all too common thing with child actors 😞
Even though the movie doesn't come out and specify whether Henry really is evil, has a mental illness or a personality disorder I think it's safe to say that Henry is a psychopath. His words and deeds fit the criteria, and the scary thing is that everything in this movie is plausible. That's why I still find it so chilling.
Saw this movie in the theater when it originally came out. A literal cheer rang out when the mother let go and Macaulay fell to his death “Noooooooo.......”
My buddy and I saw it in the theater also. We were chanting "drop him, drop him, DROP HIM!" (There were only about ten people in the place) And they all cheered when she dropped him too. It was great.
I was 13 when this came out on vhs. My mother rented it for us (me, her, and my brother) to watch as soon as it released... at least at our local video store. She raised me on horror (Stephen King, Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc), so I was skeptical in regards to this movie and how much it would "scare" me... I'm happy to report, that even after all these years it *still* creeps me the fuck out just as much as it did when I was 13... especially Mac's performance... and *especially* fresh from having watched him in "Home Alone"!
@@sitrepproductionsatlanta8538 Well you are right. But the thing is he _tries_ to be entertaining. Which is annoying. Ironically, in the early days I enjoyed his take on movies. But his ego got to him.
I really enjoyed this when I was a kid. It was creepy but that's why I loved it. Not because he was a sociopath, but rather it was cool seeing such a serious movie with kids where it wasn't just some paint by numbers drama where the kid isn't a big part of the film.
Oh shit!!! I remember my dad renting us for this when we were like 5 and after an hour my mom was like wtf did you rent for them Pat!?!?!😂😂😂... Then again, he also got her to let us watch Bravehart because it was "educational"...
Pretty much any tv show or movie that was still under the banner of everything Disney bought is now Disney. Disney know has The X-Men and Fantastic Four they could use in the MCU
Eijah Woods character was prob so serious because he just lost his mom. Not to many kids could lose a parent and then act like they are having a great day at Six Flags unless they are deranged. i found the portrayal of his character pleasing and exact.
Macaulay Culkin's father, the jerk, was a big reason why Macaulay Culkin's career came to a sudden end. Hollywood studios just didn't want to deal with that jerk anymore.
5:16 too be fair, Kevin was creating the traps to protect his home from two dangerous criminals who we see in both Home Alones have no issue hurting or killing a child. As such the traps could easily be considered self defense.
I just loved watching this movie when i was thirteen. I kinda became obsessed with it as i was a Macaulay Culkin's fan. The ambiance, acting, photography...the gloomy, dark, and cold atmosphere...and the psychological theme of a psychopayic child made me get really into it.
