My wife and I saw Gremlins on our first date the day after it opened. She gabbed hold of me when the first gremlin jumped out of the cupboard at Billy;s mom and hasn't let go since. We'll celebrate our 35th anniversary in September and stuffed Gizmo I gave her a few days after that date still sits by the bed.
For those that are too young to remember, they had these toys come out in the 90's called Furby's, they looked very similar to Gizmo, so Warner Brothers sued the maker of the toy company due to copyright infringement.
@LordRain1031 - They don't actually record anything. They were supposed to "learn", but all that did was that the longer they were active, the more "words" they would use. It was a lot of panic over nothing.
I am glad Phoebe Cates and Zach Galligan were cast. I like them both, innocent, gentle personality's, with cute looks which fit . I first saw Phoebe in an 80's 2 part series called 'Lace' so recall her from this. Zach I love in 'Waxwork' also.
To be honest that scene about Kate's Character talking about how her father died made me love her even more because she has a very vulnerable moment where she shows a lot of trust to Billy in all this chaos and destruction and revealing something very personal about herself. Something she probably would not have done to anyone. And it totally fits her not loving Christmas and being very depressed around that time (as she mentioned it earlier in the movie). It left a huge trauma for her but it just makes her even more likable & believable because despite this traumatic experience, she still remains a very sweet, loving and supportive person. Someone you just wanna love and protect. Phoebe was perfect in that role and in all honesty i still have a huge crush on her.
I just mentioned that before I saw your comment. I agree! It would have made no sense for Kate to snap at Billy about hating Christmas without explaining it later in the movie. The scene I’m glad got cut was the ridiculous subplot about Mrs. Deagle and her stock-swindling dead husband, Donald. You can hear hints of this subplot on the news just before Mr. Wing comes to the Peltzer house etc reclaim Gizmo. On a side note, if Joe Dante had cut that scene, we wouldn’t have the hilarious callback in Gremlins 2! 💚🤣🤣💚
People still argue that Gremlins isn't a "Christmas" movie because its mock horror. BS its a Christmas movie. Still one of my favorite Christmas movies, as a matter of fact. PS I had the Atari game as a kid
@ The skull on my desk wears a Christmas hat all year long. But I guess the only serious contender for being more of a Christmas movie than Gremlins is Die Hard.
I was so spooked by gremlins I used to piss out of my bedroom window if I woke during the night, because I was too scared to go to the toilet.. it was the “there may be a gremlin in your house” line that cemented it in my head forever
A lot of people are probably aware that voice acting genius Frank Welker led his talents to Gremlins. Not as Gizmo, of course. Most people know he was voiced by Howie Mandel. But I remember being stunned, as a kid, to see that the equally legendary Peter Cullen’s voice was also used in Gremlins! Peter and Frank are the best of friends and are of course amazing as the voices of Optimus Prime and Megatron! 💚🤗🤗💚
LOL, I would love to see a 3rd one come out with today's media. I can picture gremlin Selfies everywhere. Can just imagine the flasher taking a selfie.
While I love the first and kind of like the 2nd, my best guess is that 3rd would turn out to be horrible and ruin the franchise. Just look, what the did to Men in Black.
@Ultra CNC Well Carpenters 1981 Thing remake of the 1954 (?) original was imho pretty good (the 2011 prequel not so much), same with the Alien Sequel by Cameron. And to be honest, the RoboCop remake looked pretty good, it was just ruined because they wanted to avoid R and went for a PG-13 rating. More violence, blood and a lot more cynicism and it could have been pretty good (yes the actual result wasn't, I agree). Same with the Total Recall remake. Good actors, excellent FX, good photography. Could have been pretty rad, but a bad, formulaic script lead to a just mediocre result, far inferior to the original. I guess the issue is not the "remakes can't work", but that most studies just use a formula for doing remakes instead of trying to recapture, what made the original so outstanding. I'm pretty sure you COULD do Gremlins 3 that would work if you put someone on the script who really knows what he is doing (eg Columbus/Spielberg), but that rarely seems to happen..
@Ultra CNC See ? I told you to go to law school and I also advised you to win the lottery yesterday. But did you listen to me ? No ? I'm just your old Mum who can be ignored. You even ignored me, when you were little and I told you to clean up your room. So don't blame me now, for you not listening to my advise.
When I heard about people trying to remove that tragic story scene from this movie, I was relieved in knowing that they left it in. I always thought the scene was essential in bringing the audience back to reality after all the shenanigans the gremlins caused. In my opinion the gremlins unleashing chaos is meant to be funny, but to show that chaos isn't okay there is that somber scene to pause the comedy and laughter for a little while.
*I absolutely love Gremlins .* *I actually liked the story of how Christmas was ruined for kate .* *Also it did not come out of nowhere .* *It was mentioned a few times that she did not like Christmas & no one knew why .*
Was going to say the same thing. She mentions she didn't care for the holiday. So, when she went into detail it wasn't a shock to me. Made her character more believable.
@@SweWolf74 I thought of the same thing: the follow up, or sequel story, that Kate begins to tell of a traumatic incident of Lincoln's birthday (or President's Day?); either way, she starts to mention meeting a man who looked and dressed like Abraham Lincoln, however, Billy is instantly over it and turns his attention to more pressing matters, almost like saying it's what he should have done in the original film. :-)
I've always had an issue with the third rule, "Never feed them after midnight". This means they can only be fed up until 11:59pm the day they're born. It would have made more sense if the rule was, "Don't feed them from sundown to sun up".
I like that they joke about this rule in the sequel. What would happen if the Mogwai are on an airplane and they eat something while crossing a time zone? Does daylight savings time count? Lol its still a great movie!
On 3/19/2022 I FINALLY found a dancing Gizmo toy like you have. My pets wondered what it was but when I turned it on and it started to sing and dance, they jumped back as if they're thinking 'What's that?' The best thing about it was that this Gizmo was the LAST one they had left so I quickly grabbed it.
the scene where Kate explains about her father dying makes sense because several times during the film she expressed her dislike of Christmas. when finally pressed by Billy to explain how anyone could dislike Christmas she needed a humdinger of a reason i always felt "never feed after Midnight" was too vague. don't feed between 12:00am and 6:00am, 7:00am, whenever would have tightened the script
I love how they covered it in the second movie 'but what if it eats before midnight, gets a sesame seed stuck in it's teeth and swallows it after midnight?' A gremlin then made rather timely interruption.
One of my favorite Minty videos so far. Loved the "low tech" new clips. Have you ever made ONE showing all your cool stuff and memorabilia? I'd love to get to see a beyond Minty type set tour video. Totally love your videos on all those great 80s movies
FYI: the set of "Hill Valley" or "Kingston Falls" has been used in numerous other movies and TV shows (it is located in the Universal Studios backlot.) Off-hand I can think of "Bruce Almighty," "Groundhog Day," and "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark." The set's generic "town square" set-up is relatively easy to redecorate with alternate facades in order to give the set the look of different towns which, shockingly, all have the same street plans: basically, a square of roads, guarded externally by connected buildings/businesses, around a large, open, squared central area which is usually backed by a large, often government type building. (i.e. the courthouse/clock-tower of "Back To The Future.")
I don’t remember Gremlins being super scary when I was watched it as a kid, but I was watch rated R horror films at the time too. Lol Also, I’m looking forward to “The Burbs” review being reuploaded soon. 😁
That christmas tree scene... and the stairlift scene used to get played, rewound (slowly on vhs for comedic effect) and played again. And agian. DVD generation wont understand the comedy found from slow rewind - including audio... priceless. Also at the end of Casper when the kids on eachothers shoulders run into the string lights while trying to prank the party, that was the BEST in slo mo rewind... My sides are still sore.
Hey Minty, I'm on board with your suggestion, 100%. Let's get a petition started or something so that we can, after decades of waiting in white-knuckle angst, finally get to see that smug, last-beer-guzzling vagabond E.T. get blasted. I will put my signature down, of course since it's for a good cause, you know, for the good of humanity or somesuch thing.
Thanks Minty you've definitely grown over the years in confidence and how you present your videos. I can tell you're a genuine person and a good guy, I'm always happy when I see your videos they brighten my day for 12-15 mins. You're in a tight race with Bearing for my favorite Aussie on RU-vid I love you both but no worries you're a much kinder person than he is!😂...Keep up the great work can't wait for your next video...See Ya!
This film was both funny and scary but is an 80's classic Gizmo is soooooo cute and the Gremlins were funny I love this film minty take care yourself and stay healthy ❤👍❤👍❤👍
Another great video Minty! You can see you have gained more confidence in your videos, but still you had the gift back then as you still do now dude! Keep up the great work mate! ;)
About the Kate scene: It would have been weird for Joe Dante to cut it out, because it was foreshadowed earlier in the film when Billy walks Kate home from Dorry’s Pub. Also, maybe it’s because I’ve watched both Gremlins movies countless times, but it bothers me that Kate is described as the barmaid at Dorry’s. She worked at the bank with Billy. Waitressing on weeknights was something she did for free as a favor to Dorry so he wouldn’t have to pay an extra waitress. The woman was a fucking Saint, which is why it was so funny to see Phoebe Cates play a complete bitch in Date With An Angel!
I can definitely tell an improvement in your presentation and allowing your personality to show since the first video. I want to watch every movie again after watching your videos. Keep it up!
the death story scene was great. having just a little bit of twisted darkness was the thing that made this movie so appealing to kids, who it was obviously made for
Gremlins was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I too watch it from time to time as a grown man. However when it's Christmas time, instead of Gremlins, I watch the old cartoon of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
im new to your channel so this is the first time i have seen the gremlins one, im 41 and my mum allowed my siblings to take me to see gremlins in the cinema when i was like 6 or so when it came out, she thought it was advertised as a childfrens movie. i loved gizmo, but when they turned green i screamed my head off and i had to be removed. but really love the movies now lol. and i have an original gizmo from the time the movie came out. loving all these videos :)
I'm 39. I didn't see it in the theater. But, my family rented the VHS a few years later. I was NOT A FAN. I think I lost it when the one was microwaved & blended, and was freaked out by the Santa story. I know I didn't watch it again for a decade. It was my most hated movie for a long time. Oddly enough, I didn't hate Gremlins 2. Probably because one could talk. 🤷😜
Minty! Great work! Check out the dude wearing glasses and puppeteering the gremlin in the Christmas tree attacking “Billys Mom”. (Best seen in slo-mo. I was freaked of what may have been lurking in our tree, then I saw that guy and was very grateful for the reassurance “”it’s only a movie”
I saw this in the theater. I was 8 and my mom took me and my friend to see it. My friend got so scared when they turned into gremlins that he waited in the lobby for the rest of the movie.
I don’t get the confusion over the that’s how I found out there was no Santa clause scene. People would be losing their shit more if it had been removed saying why is there that scene where billy walks Kate home and she tells him she doesn’t like Christmas yet it’s not explained why she doesn’t? But what do I know
I love the Gremlin duology, and Gremlins came out on my 5th birthday on June 8, 1984. At a local comic-con, I got to meet Zach Galligan and he signed both Gremlins movies for me.
And despite it being an enormous success it still took six years for the sequel to be made, in which time the latex puppets from the first film had started to disintegrate so the props department had to make completely new ones.
Keep up the good work! I enjoy you and videos. I would love to see movies like "Fast Times", " Up The Academy", " Porky's" & one horror "Silent Night, Deadly Night"
I first saw this movie as a kid when it was on TV in the late 80s and I never thought it was a 'family' movie. I always thought of it as a scary movie; what with moms and pets getting viciously attacked, coupled w/ that scene about how Kate's dad died. Its crazy to think that's what it was categorized as back in the 80s lol
Rumours of a 3rd installment of this movie have been floating around forever. Personally I'd love it if they would make it darker instead of goofy. Also I think it would be awesome for a climax scene in the 3rd one if Gizmo purposely eats after midnight near the end of the movie in order to gain some size and strength for a final fight with Spike. They always pick on Gizmo once they turn into Gremlins and I think it would give him a fair shot if he turned into a good Gremlin. Honestly if you think about it; the other Mogwai are already bad in their Mogwai stage so why shouldn't Gizmo metamorphosize into a good Gremlin. I think it would be epic!
Phoebe Cates thought the father story was a joke the first time she read the script. She did a great job with it, but the story was just so contrived. Although, as a kid watching the movie in 1984, I didn't think it was at the time.
#4 is not completely out of the blue, actually. She does mention earlier in the movie that she doesn't really like Christmas, and this is the explanation as to why. I remember a MASH episode where the doctors are trying to keep a soldier alive just long enough for him to not die on Christmas so that his family/child(ren) wouldn't have the holiday associated with his death. So while the story and timing may be bizarre, it really does fit in. I wonder what the explanation would have been if the others had gotten their way.
