You should have mentioned one of the reasons for the iconic Pinhead makeup. Originally, the story goes, the makeup didn't include the vertical and horizontal lines. It was going to be just a bunch of pins sticking out of his head. However, it was the makeup people who drew a picture that included the lines so they'd have a grid to go by where they would place the pins. Apparently, Clive Barker saw the picture and thought it made a nice addition to the visual. He told the makeup artists to include it in the final makeup, and the rest is horror history.
Thanks for that information. I always love learning new things about my favorite horror movies. Whether it's the backstage processes, the make-up, the effects, or the crazy special effects that they use, it's always great to learn more about the world or horror movies. Thank you again! Much obliged, and appreciated!
Doug Bradley actually helped apply the makeup I'm assuming pins after having seen it done to him after so many weeks if different films. They didn't ask him to be in the last film they rushed to keep the copyright on. Some films must be made so the company rights don't expire. An I don't even want to watch the one wo Doug. Looks like blockbuster recommended b movie that doesn't sell so they recommended it.
Met Doug Bradley back in 2005ish at a Horror Convention. Was such a classy man. Took time to answer countless questions from us fans as well as stand up for more selfies than a 14yr old girls Instagram acct has. Showed him my Hellraiser tattoo which he complemented. Also met Ashley Laurence at the same convention. I have a mahogany and brass Lament Cube signed by them both along with a few Cenobite actors from a few of the later movies. My prize possession.
For your consideration, Mr. H here on RU-vid has readings from the comics that are certainly worth a watch/listen. He has a wonderful voice. I'd leave a link but it's iffy whether it will stay up but if you type in Mr. H reading Hellraiser comics you should be able to see it. Well done on the Lament Cube!
It’s interesting that they had originally wanted Julia to be the villain of the franchise as she is the main villain in the sequel (one of the most underrated horror sequels imo). And yes, Doug Bradley is awesome. I love his guest vocals in Cradle of Filth songs - such a presence.
I showed this movie in my college theater back in 1987 when I was a poor and starving projectionist. It wasn’t scheduled to be shown, but was used as a replacement when the originally scheduled film did not arrive in time. I remember people in the audience being utterly stunned by how violent and scary this movie was. I even remember someone (I presume a girl) screaming when Uncle Frank sliced open the rat. And when Frank said “Jesus wept”, just before he was finally torn apart? Truly a disturbing experience.
I think i'm more horrified at Minty asking of Ebert, "Who pissed on his sandwiches?" WHAT?? Here in the U.S., anyone pissin' on sammiches is of the DEBIL!! 😂
I've always found Pinhead more intimidating than scary. He's not really evil, he's a dispassionate enforcer of rules. He's like Hades in Greek mythology.
This is a great description of Pinhead. He's like some sadistic plumber or electrician who gets called out then given a lot of crap form the homeowner. He has the ultimate, "Look, _you_ called _me._ I don't want to be here, but I've got a job to do. It doesn't matter you don't want to be torn apart., That's what you ordered, not me. I've got 56,000 more jobs after this and I'm only 450 years into my 5 millennia shift."
@@jonathantillian6528 Yeah, it's like pinhead must be thinking FFS, the extortionate price these plumbers and electricians charge nowadays, you should be thankful we are just ripping you apart it could be worse, you would have remortgage to give them their pound of flesh.
The cube is the cubensis mushroom. Pinhead is the first formation of mushrooms. The cube is a puzzle. Need to feed it right, then have a voice to god and ask for forgiveness.
I am not a horror movie connoisseur, but I enjoy the sincerity and respect Minty shows his subject matter. It's what got me subscribing. Thanks again for opening doors on these movies.
One other thing about the Priest from the book, the creature's pins were all decorated with gemstones and other pretty trinkets. The entire look of the Cenobites was that they were beautiful, yet horrible to behold at the same time. Pleasure and pain, heaven and hell, indivisible...
My husband and I (We're 53) have been together for 14 years. He owns all of the Hellraiser movies and some cool figures. I had NEVER seen any of the films until just last weekend. I'll tell you, I am now OBSESSED! What a spectacular movie!! I loved every minute of it! I can't believe I waited this long to watch it! We're planning a Date Binge Day in a couple of weeks. (Halloween weekend!) 🎃 Great video Minty! 😍
I'm 45 and I ADORE the original Hellraiser trilogy. I loved Hellraiser Bloodline, too - I thought it was highly underrated - but it was sad to see the franchise spiral down the drain. BUT! I just saw the NEW Hellraiser a couple of days ago and it is SUBLIME! I can't recommend it enough, and if they decide to continue the franchise from there then I am all in! xx
Game changer!! As a huge horror kid of the 80s it was so frefreshing to see a horror vilan that didn't crack Jokes, or have to run around boiler rooms or, woods to get the victims. Also the fact they didn't show up until half way through the movie was genius. Hellbound is prob one of the very few sequal that's as good as the first. Everything after that was just bullshit.
I think that's why I never watched it. I was assuming it was just another stupid horror flick. I got over them pretty quickly by their 80's. I finally watched it last weekend. I loved it! (I'm 53)
Coil is great. My introduction to them was a mix CD that a friend put together that included several of their tracks for Hellraiser. It's solid, and would've been a fantastic, moody soundtrack for the movie.
I was disappointed when I heard this. Saw it in the theater, and I know we all would have lost our shit if we saw that. Maybe someday we will get a mega crossover?
You have quite a bit of the sequel mixed in with your video clips. The special effects achieved in this film, considering the filming conditions and budget, are astonishing. A true testament to the sheer talent of those involved. It was very much a labor of love for the material and it shows. The footage of frank "growing" out of the floorboards is one of the best things put to film practically, and it was completely made up on the spot. For anyone who has only seen the later movies.. the first two are something special and on a completely different level. Fun fact about the sequel, you can see the crew in the shot of the demon chasing her down the hallway if you look closely, pushing it along on a trolley.
A deeply dark , creepy horror classic, this gem gets under your skin... I love it !!!! There’s something very unsettling with S & M gothic horror. A must watch! Doug Bradley is amazing! Ashley Laurence nails her character perfectly & she is quite attractive! The music score is phenomenal & haunting. "WE'LL TEAR YOUR SOUL APART....!!!". Also fans I strongly recommend reading " Hellbound Heart" ....chilling brilliance!
One of the most iconic movie posters. Though after finding out that one of the crew, a middle-aged lady, suggested the title be "What a Woman Will Do For a Good F*ck", I can't help but picture that with Pinhead's snarling face. Makes it seem more taboo.
I had a bootleg copy of the full Coil soundtrack and I thought it was brilliant. If they'd used it I'm sure it would've given the film a really creepy and uncanny feeling. Coil have this ability to write music that can really get under your skin, their use of occult themes and sexuality strike a bit of a nerve in most people. Their music can be very unsettling.
Maybe it's just me but in the original movie when the female cenobite was playing with her throat gash I got a little excited. I'll just uh....I'll see my way out.
I remember when this came out it was awesome. I had already read everything. Clive Barker had written up to that point so it was very familiar with it, but he did a great job. I've met him a few times over the years at book signings and he's always been wonderful to talk to
Shit! I had the original PS back in the 90's and never bothered with #2 - #5. Was going to get it if the FF7 remake was good, but it seems pretty mediocre from what I've seen.
I'm re-reading Barker's works and while I love the original Hellraiser (and Hellbound even more), and I really enjoyed the new one, I feel like stop-motion animation would be the best medium for his characters. There needs to be an extra layer of uncomfortableness to really emphasize the otherworldly sensations.
@@mickeypye2593 have you seen "Mad God" or anything by the Quay brothers? That's the kind of visual madness I picture when I read Clive Barker's books.
@@jaymanwitt have you seen the documentary about Phil Tippett, it's incredible. I watched it back to back with Making Apes, about the makeup effects in the original Planet of the Apes, and it's just incredible to watch these guys create worlds with their bare hands.
I rented the house in 1989-1991 as an up and coming computer scientist and my bedroom was in the attic 😆 I am not kidding. I had no idea at the time but sitting their in my bedroom watching a VHS of the film, I shuddered 😩😱😂 When I told my roommates and showed them the film, none would swap rooms with me 🤪🤭
I was just watching the ten things you didn’t know about pinhead last night and I remember being surprised to not find any other Minty videos on hellraiser… until today, what a coincidence 😁
I do not like horror films in the slightest, but felt I would do myself a disservice to not watch this masterpiece classic. It is one of the very few horror movies I have ever seen and I agree with you it was very well done!
I remember as a lil kid goin to the DVD rent store near my house and looking thru the horror section, I was so intruiged/scared by the DVD poster of hellraiser, I really wanted to watch it but it took several years. Those DVD stores back then had something magickal about them , you could spend hours just wandering thru the store and look at all those DVDs and read their description. Hellraiser has to be one of those movies you'll never forget especially as a child .
Omg I spent countless hours in video stores growing up. I remember VHS rentals had to be returned by 7pm so I would sit and wait by whatever movie I wanted so that when they put it back on shelf I was there to grab it. I quite literally had the store I used memorized so much it could have been my own personal VHS collection. So when I turned 15 and was legally allowed to get a job I tried and tried to get hired on there but was never able to. Which sucked because it would've been my dream job back when I was 15.
Hope you do the sequels as well :) I really like the first 4 movies. As always, thanks for the great content, I learned a lot of new things about the movie :)
@@bigkmoviesandgames 3 has some fun scenes; as a kid when I saw the scenes with Pinhead in the church going all ' I AM THE WAY ' it was pretty blasphemous, and great. Me and my friends cheered that part lol.
@@jeanpaulmichell7243 LOL yeah three really is a crowd pleaser. It definitely lacks the subtlety and depth of the first two but it has the most Pinhead of the theatrical releases and if I'm not mistaken the biggest body count so it always has a special place in my heart.
I never knew Jennifer Tilley auditioned for a role in the movies. I think it would have made that movie really good. The actress they got was pretty wooden.
Hellraiser is a classic, to this day. The story, the script, the scenes, the acting, figurines, makeup, props and the great music. It's an amazing movie. It's a real achievement, from Clive Barker's craft.
Such sights we have to show you! Hellraiser and Elmstreet are the best horror series with true personality tht re actually frightful as well as delightful. Randomly the band Garbage has a song with the tear yur soul apart lyrics on their first album. Morticia
The graphic novel series goes into great detail--it was a showcase for many prominent comic writers and artists, and many of their concepts and characters came together towards the end and spun off into the Pinhead comic from the 90s.
If u really want to know about the Hell Priest and the Cenobitical Order his a member of, then read Clive Barker’s The Scarlet Gospels. You will then know everything as half the book is spent in Hell.
1:25, Seriously, I AM GETTING DADGUM SICK OF THESE DADGUM SPAM COMMENTS I'VE BEEN GETTING RIGHT NOW!! Heck, I also keep seeing these type of comments in other RU-vid channels everywhere like Channel Awesome, Lance Stewart, and Andre Black Nerd for example.
I remember seeing Hellraiser twice in the theaters my senior year of high school and LOVED IT!!!! I was reading the Books of Blood series back then and was a huge Barker fan. I got to meet Clive a couple years ago at a horror event here in Las Vegas, his health wasn't great but he was so nice.
Fun fact: I shared this tidbit on a different video about H.R. Giger's Influence. May it help anyone who finds this info worthy. Many are unaware of this tidbit but Clive Barker was and still is one of H.R. Giger's greatest fans. Prior to making the 1987's Hellraiser, Mr. Barker would frequent underground nightclub BDSM themed in the downtown area of Manhattan. This would setup the unique leather design to the Cenobites. But he did this to bring upon uniqueness to his movie and not "just carbon copy and paste another man's life's work without proper credit". Mr. Barker was enamored by Giger's works and obviously thanks in part to the 1979's Alien movie. The original Cenobites were actually going to be more "biomechanical" than "organic leathery attire". But along the way Mr. Barker did wanted to leave some of the core designs intact from Giger's works. As a way to pay homage to Mr. Giger's artistic inspiration. In fact Mr. Barker did show his Cenobites designs to H.R. giger to get feedback. Mr. Giger ultimately gave it the proverbial thumbs up. So yeah. The reality is the universe of Hellraiser was going to be more akin to biomechanical than leathery skin whatever. Edit: Forgot to add this tidbit. Mr. Barker did keep the chalky white skin for Pinhead and for the female Cenobite(s) in the first and subsequent films. Obviously paying homage to Giger's white and black airbrush works. Edit 2: Taking a step back to see the Cenobites as they are screams H.R. Giger's Necronomicon IV. Edit 3: Believe it or not the majority of the SFX teams for Hellraiser 1-4 went to go work 1997's Event Horizon. For many years people have drawn a strong conclusion that Event Horizon and Hellraiser share the same universe. Go watch Mr H Reviews video on and All Sewn Up video on it as well. Mr H Reviews brought his understanding about the connection and All Sewn Up did quite an extensive analysis of both films and basically how they relate more than it should because yeah The Leviathan is one scary freaking entity. And it's really freaking scary how The Gravity Drive looks 😳 way to much like The Lament Configuration. Both things opens up holes/gateways to another universe. Edit 4: Go watch HR Giger The Monster Maker by Blind Dweller. That's where I wrote my initial tidbit on the matter of Clive Barker's association with H.R. Giger. Edit 5: When I said more biomechanical than organic leather design I want the audience to see it this way, as in picture The Borgs from Star Trek The Next Generation or even more wildler The Zombified Cyborg Parents from Return of The Living Dead 4 Necropolis. Yeah somehow the Zombified Cyborg Parents are as close to the original design of Tne Cenobites. Go figure. Edit 6: The new Hellraiser 2022 is Clive Barker's original Cenobites biomechanical design(s). Back then in 1987 it was not really feasible due to budget constraints. Edit 7: Check out Tortured Souls: Animae Damnatae. All I can say is wow 👌
Hellraiser and most horror are 18 in England, we had what you called XXX and you didn't want that as it usually got banned. Luckily back then my brother could get hold of banned vhs. I don't understand your age restrictions as we just have U, PG, 12, 15 & 18 these days in England. What is PG13 🤔🐾💜
I loved this movie as a horror obsessed kid and I must admit that all of the super-gay,S&M, leather subtext right right over my head. I met Clive Barker when I was 12 and he was super duper nice to me.
Maybe someone else could have been successful as Pinhead like Doug is, but I just can't picture it... Like having a different voice for Darth Vader... Some things are perfect!
Pardon Minty, but Roger Ebert has been off base about certain horror films for years, he was critical about "Night of the Living Dead" being shown in drive-ins, yet he wrote for Russ Meyer, "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls", which featured such winning sequences as a drugged up guy sticking a gun in a woman's mouth on a bed and shooting her. Not knocking the film, but just funny how morally sanctimonious he could be.

I just watched the new one. I really liked it but it's missing the dirty, nightmarish feel of the original. The OG Hellraiser feels more like an actual nightmare caught on grainy celluloid whereas the new one is a highly polished film.
I would like to say that I liked the new movie, but I don't. Talking about the nightmarish feel, the scene that shows the cenobite running like a lame zombie made me laugh.

Great video on this Minty, but I will say in the words of the late Kilindi Lyi , don’t buy that copy of the Hellraiser puzzle Box from the shop and drink your mushroom Soup.
I was born in 79 but consider myself an 80s baby and saw many of the popular 80s horror movies. But I had never watched Hellraiser until last year...for Halloween season I guess. Of course I had heard of it, and it's 20 sequels. Honesty, I wasn't too impressed. Perhaps I would have felt differently if I had seen back in the 80s or 90s and the nostalgia may have been more ingrained. But it seriously was the quintessential cheese horror movie. Not to be too harsh but the ending sucked too. I believe I had heard of the Cenobites or whatever the hell before but when I started watching it, it seemed like Frank was the main character. I thought he was going to become Pinhead. I guess Pinhead became the main Cenobite because he had like three lines? All the others had like the same amount of screen time. But perhaps the subsequent movies go into the world of the Cenobites..and Pinhead slaps them around or something... Although I had disagreed with Ebert on a lot of movies, he was correct on this one. I can see the book being a good read, but the movie is weak, cheesy stuff that just tries to compensate with Gore. But the mom and daughter were both hot at the time.
#1 Bonus. I meet Clive Barker at a Horror con and had him sign a postcard that came with the Tin Box set of Hellrasier 1 & 2. He told me that the ORIGINAL pitch was supposed to be a Demon and NOT a person. As the postcard was the original idea for the movie and it looks nothing like we know today's movie poster/layout.
I loved HellRaiser!! It scared the sh*t out of me and it truly had a fantastic soundtrack!! And I'm not going to lie (and I can GUARANTEE some other women would agree...) There was something EXTREMELY sexy about "Pin Head"!! BTW: *NOW on "HULU" in the US they have a new updated version of HELLRAISER!! 😉💜
@@megatronjenkins2473 I did not have a chance to watch it yet, but this HELLRAISER has a female pinhead and it does have a new story line....so not a remake
*I love Clive Barker's work. His stuff is truly terrifying! He even designed a PC game in the mid 90's that I played over and over again called: CLIVE BARKER'S UNDYING Awesomely scary*
if they went with an actress for the role of the Hell Priest/Pinhead, Meg Foster would be perfect. her voice and presence as both Evilyn in the Masters of the Universe movie or as Hera in Hercules&Xena are some good examples as to why. end of the day Doug Bradley was perfect,an icon.
