It was the first cameo that Stan Lee, an executive producer of the film, spoke.. Stan Lee actually shows up a second time, in San Fran after Hulk smashes the ground
Think they also used the cutaways to look a lot like the pages of comic books. As is often the case, there was probably a lot, lot more thought in the making of this movie than most viewers ever understood.
I love how HULK was shot and editing like comic book with it side panels and cut aways. Eric Bana was good as Bruce Banner/ Hulk. It was interesting seeing Sam Elliot in a non-cowboy role.
Not really. He gets slightly bigger. But mostly grows in mass. He doesn't grow in size exponentially and indefinitely. He typically goes from 8-12 feet. Depending on the artist and era. Ang Lee's Hulk goes from 14-22 feet throughout most of the film. And gets even bigger when fighting his father. Just way too big.
Do let us know where it describes the Hulk inceasing in size when he gets angry? or any other time... As far as I know it has always been the the angrier he gets the stronger he gets, not larger.
@@JC-uz4bu right. He grows in strength and muscle mass essentially. He's depicted in some comics as bigger, but that's mostly because of inconsistencies with artists. In the Marvel encyclopedia companion books, he's given a height range, but that's again allowing for disparities between artistic renderings. But he's generally around 8-12 feet tall. Ang Lee's Hulk is almost 25 feet tall at one point. Way too big.
I know this film gets a lot of hate but honestly it's one of the most unique superhero films and in the modern day landscape of superhero oversaturation and saminess this film is very refreshing by comparison. It's definitely flawed but it's much more memorable than most superhero films and I love it.
As a digital Creator myself, I always praised it.. That was the first time we had a superhero like that brought to the big screen that doesn't wear a costume
Hell yes. I totally love this movie. The flaws? How many movies are ever made that don't have those? Some of our greatest beloved classics have flaws. The fact if something's too perfect will complain that it's not realistic.
I'm all with you guys. I remember when it came out, so many people said, that it sucked and that it was lame. When I watched it I thought, it must be different movie. But no, it's just as awesome today as it was over 20 years ago.
Humanity can’t even Agee even when we agree… it was just a simple statement lads/ladies I’m not about to go into a full breakdown of what made it such a pivotal film. No need to bring difficulty to something so simple.
I feel the opposite, I'm an old comic reader and can only remember 1 run where he grew bigger the angrier he got. Also why does his anger vary? One minute he's being shot with machine guns and grows the size of a house but later he's being shot with high caliper tank shells and doesn't grow at all?
Jennifer Connolly was the best thing about this film for me,the CGI-was-TRASH-Hulk didn't look good at all.Saw this boring movie at the cinema and was truly disappointed,a good HULK film is very hard to do.
Hulk getting bigger the angrier he gets is comic accurate! Its one of its few redeeming qualities! That and hulk punching the dog in the nuts for biting his!! 😂
Not really. He gets slightly bigger. But mostly grows in mass. He doesn't grow in size exponentially and indefinitely. He typically goes from 8-12 feet. Depending on the artist and era. @@richborn6700in the comics, he grew so big his teeth was bigger than humans especially when he was fighting his girlfriend betty ross she hulk in the heart of the monster. So he does get bigger and become even stronger and the movie is accurate to this aspect of hulk.
I love this movie. The whole abusive father angle was in the comics and is one of the reasons I like the Hulk character. This also seemed to have influenced the Ultimate Destruction game that I played the hell out of back then. The people I heard complain about it weren't familiar with the character and only used the second-hand knowledge they've absorbed by osmosis to judge if it was a "good Hulk movie." If you've ever read the comics you'd know that most of the stories are talking or inner monologue and the fighting is the smallest part of the story.
Absolutely underrated! I loved it! It felt like its what movies and TV, were going for in the 80s, but missed. The CGI, being bad? Hmm, it felt to me like what the comics were trying to get into people's imagination, in that respect the CGI, was perfect! Yes, I feel many people missed what is was going for. And yes, its very surreal, one of my favorite aspects. Eric Bana, was perfect!
I loved the movie and the CGI. I don't remember anyone upset about the movie. Plus, the Hulk does get bigger and stronger as he gets angrier. I still enjoy watching this movie
I have a soft spot for this Hulk movie. Of the two solo Hulk films I strongly prefer the Ang lee version. Jennifer connelly also does a fantastic Betty performance. There's a lot of great action scenes and there's those great desert battle shots! This will always be my preferred solo hulk movie!
5:57 thats actually how it is in comics, Bruce's father physically and mentally abused him everyday because of his intelligence calling little Bruce a monster
Check out Incredible Hulk vol. 1 # 312 from 1985. It's haunting! His father also not only experimented on himself, but Bruce as well. Which makes it pretty impossible to re-create the "incident" that creates the Hulk. (Not counting after-gamma exposure blood samples of course 🤔)
I was lucky enough to see this in theaters (like 5 times!!), when this movie came out it was YEARSSS ahead of its time. This is by far one of my favorite movies ever!!!
The Hulk does get bigger the angrier he gets, well that how it was/is in the comics. I loved this part as if he ever fights the Wolverine Logan is tiny compared to the Hulk and makes for a better fight.
He gets slightly bigger. But mostly grows in mass. He doesn't grow in size exponentially and indefinitely. He typically goes from 8-12 feet. Depending on the artist and era. 1) The effects in this film are well done. 2) Danny Elfman pulled off a great score that matched the tone. 3) The backstory of Bruce's father causing him trauma, creating the Hulk personality, is a detail from the comics. 4) The comic panel transitions are a nice touch and not hard to follow. 5) Hulk getting angrier, thus making him stronger and bigger is a detail from the comics. 6) The film is NOT too long. It is worth the wait before he becomes the Hulk. Leading to that point are scenes that unfold the story and character development. Unlike a lot of rushed films that get to the action or antics in the first 10 minutes. Overall, this film was ahead of its time. Imagine Pulp Fiction being released years before and people saying "It's all out of order and you never get to see what's in the case. This movie sucks." This film especially stands out over a lot of the bland superhero movies we get today. It's long overdue that Hulk (2003) gets the positive recognition it deserves.
I agree, 4) at the time I didn't like it when I saw it in the theater but as I rewatched it through the years I actually like it. I think it being new to me and was more of a bookworm instead of a comic book reader is why I didn't like it at the start.
The idea that the Hulk is a manifestation of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father is a fairly long-standing comics-accurate story point. In fact, the different "Hulks" that Banner becomes are each an aspect of his personality, which was fractured by his father and given form by the gamma accident.
Good video Minty....you should also do a 10 things (or a 10 more things) you didn't know about the MCU The Incredible Hulk (the one with Edward Norton) to have a compare and contrast video to this one as well.
I'm from Utah, and I have been to Arches National Park countless times, and it broke my heart when General Ross tells the helicopter pilots to turn the Fiery Furnace "into a parking lot". The Fiery Furnace is one of the most beautiful places on the planet, plus it shows Balanced Rock, Double Arch and the most famous one, Delicate Arch. I always viewed this film as a drama about father and son issues and how bad it is to bury your feelings, only to have them bust out in a terrible, angry way. I have always appreciated this film based on the themes, and not as a fun popcorn superhero movie. Great video!
I honestly liked this movie. For me, this was one of the better Hulk movies. I am aware of the CGI issues, but honestly, it is better than many of today's CGI. Jurassic World, I'm looking at you.
I like the movie too. Though there are some scenes that are better than other, I liked the blending of Hulk into the practical destruction of the first Hulk out.
Remember, we all have a “Hulk” inside us that wants to come out from time to time and just smash shit. Repressed emotions, child hood trauma, being bullied or misunderstood, they all contribute to the inner”HULK”. The key is having “Betty’s” in our lives that help us mitigate that inner rage. “Betty’s” that see the best in us, and help to bring that “INNER GOODNESS “ that I believe is inherit in all of us! Love ya Minty! Keep em coming mate!
The soundtrack takes me back to my childhood!! Great score and so unique and groundbreaking for the time for a superhero film!! I never got the film as a kid, i didn't understand it, and i just found myself skipping to the hulkouts.. as an adult, upon rewatching it a few times, i regard it as one of the best Hulk adaptations!!
I liked The Hulk, after a childhood of watching Lou Ferigno as my Hulk, a different take was nice to see. I liked the super jumps the Hulk performed and the unleashed tactical fighting skills that he seemed to have. One thing in common with the Transformers movie I noticed, was the use of that binding foaming agent they used to restrain Hulk & Bumblebee in the military base.
I absolutely loved this movie. Hulk is always an odd one to make a movie of. Even in the comics they never quite knew how to use him. I really liked this deep dive into Bruce's psyche with the Hulk forming a kind of wish fulfillment for something suppressed.
I think this was the best version. I liked the dichotomy between Bana’s tortured scenes and Hulk’s chaos coupled with Ang Lee’s artistic cuts… Sam Elliot’s Ross was brilliant. And I liked the comic book feel..
Ang Lee found it easier to do the motion capture than to describe it to a stuntman or actor. However, most of the Hulk's voice was done by Lou Ferrigno, who continued his role in the 1990s cartoon and The Incredible Hulk film.
Hey Mint-Man👋🏼I have another tidbit for you..the guy who leaked this movie early was sentenced to jail time…and i believe he was the first to get that punishment for leaking
I remember there were a lot of complaints about how darkly lit a lot of it was originally too. To the point you only barely see things in the theater and not at all on ppv on tv at home. The dog fight scene especially. They had to significantly lighten things up for the vhs and dvd releases.
9:08 -- but in this version of HULK, General Ross is _not_ a villain, but an _anti-villain_ - that is, basically a heroic guy who ends up as the antagonist due to the misfortune of having landed on the wrong side of the plot.
A workprint leaked online weeks (maybe months?) before it's theatrical release. It was from the Color Timing process, and had a serial number watermarked in the video. They knew exactly who leaked it. He probably got fired and sued.
13:05 Obviously! That's the Main Menu music. And it loops throughout the ENTIRE film. It actually gave me a headache. I even noticed that the soundtrack for Transformers 2 is in alphabetical order: 21 Guns, Burning Down The House, Burn It To The Ground.
I remember seeing the teaser in the cinema. A close up of Bruce Banner's eye changing into that of the Hulk. I was so excited. But had to wait for 2 (!) years to actually see the movie.
Big fan of the Hulk character, especially his early 90's version "the Professor," (unpopular opinion). The movie has grown on me since watching it on premiere day, but the late great Roger Ebert said it best in his review for the film: "This is a comic book movie for people who wouldn't be caught dead at a comic book movie."
The story and emotions are there, but it's tough to look past the bad CG and Hulk Poodle. But at least it's interesting enough to keep talking about, unlike some others from that era.
As a kid, I remember this getting a lot of hate but Idk...I liked it and felt like I was the only one. It's more in depth than just a superhero flick. I actually liked this more than the Edward Norton. I had always hoped to see Eric as the Hulk again. 💚💚💚
Not really. Not like in this movie. Hulk starts at around 8 ft and gets a little bigger. In this movie, he's the size of a house, then the size of the cockpit of a fighter jet, then the size of a cloud. Just way too big.
I do HATE when people claim films like Ang Lee's Hulk were badly received. Ang Lee as CGI Hulk and Eric Bana as Bruce Banner brought the character to life like never before. The comic frame cutaways and transitions were a nice touch. Nick Nolte giving one of his best performances as Bruce's estranged father. The experimental animals all gamma'd up. The Hulk running at high speed and doing his Hulk leaps into the distance. As a Hulk fan for over 45 years I thought this was the best overall Hulk portrayal on film in many aspects. The look of Hulk was to me superior to the model used in The Incredible Hulk movie which looked too cartoonish and had often corny animation. Not that it wasn't a good film, but it could have taken some lessons from Ang Lee's interpretation.
When you hire a visionary director like Ang Lee, you Are going to get serious drama. I think “HULK” is a masterpiece, not only of story telling and character development, but I thought the special effects were ground breaking! I loved it! Sorry Minty, we are going to diverge on our opinions On this one. Even “Broke back Mountain”, with its very dark exploration of same sex attraction, was still a great movie with great character development, only because the great Ang Lee was at the helm. “HULK” should be taken as an independent interpretation of the characters. Ang Lee poured his soul into this production, and it shows! I give the movie a solid 4 out of 5 stars!
I remember watching this in theaters with my younger brother. We both loved the movie and the various layers it brought out. It was very melodramatic. To me at least I compared this to a stand-alone graphic novel, that focused on Bruce's trauma and interpersonal relations between father and child.
Better give indeed this unique Hulk film a credit for its merits like like ambitious vfx (despite the debatable hulk design, even though for me it was pretty much ok) and being quite superior as the definitive representation of Hulk's anger in terms of dark action packed material for the most part compared to what they eventually did in later marvel films or media, especially having a unique way of film editing, right?
