Ergo has probably my favorite fantasy introduction, ever. "I am Ergo the magnificent. Short in stature, tall in power, narrow of purpose and wide of vision" The way he intones this always cracks me up.
Every time i hear that critics hated a movie i knew i would like it. Krull is a great movie that gives you that kid at heart feeling every time. And the music is timeless and adds so much to the movie.
That's because Dungeons and Dragons is not the kind of game that has a story built in. It's just mechanics to facilitate storytelling. That seems to be the thing that every D&D movie forgets. For guidelines on the right way to do this, see The Lego Movie.
Right at the beginning of your video you get the whole plot wrong, they do not set out on a quest to get the glaive. In fact getting the glaive is pretty much the first thing Colwyn does after the slayers invade and take Lyssa. The quest that they do set out on is finding the Black Fortress, because the fortress magically teleports to a new location each day at sunrise.
@@petercrenfield I'm sorry I don't see that as being a quest. For instance, I don't say I'm going on quest to the store to get a beer. When he went to get the glaive, he knew where it was, it wasn't too difficult to get at maybe some light mountain climbing, and there wasn't even some kind of guardian to fight or traps to aviod, just stick your hand in some glowing goo and grab it. There just wasn't any struggle or hardship endured to acquire the glaive. Now finding and getting to that damn black fortress, that was an epic quest.
@@jaklumen For the fantasy lead crowed yeah Darkman was his breakout role. but for the breakout role breakout role for Hollywood then that Cher movie was more likely it . Fantasy did not over take more realty like Dramas till Gorge & Peter & R.J. in the 20-00's i'd say but he had one of the biggest parts and playing handicapped was big then (My left foot). I only remember a few scenes tho of him blowing up on the stand more my dad's type of movie.
so jealous of Liam. he has done everything I've ever wanted to. He was a knight of the round table, a jedi knight, he trained the Dark Knight, he was in the A-Team, he has fist-fought wolves, and has a particular set of skills...and more, of course
Krull is awesome. And so was Excalibur (Still the best King Arthur legend movie ever made). Loved every second of Krull and the video game was oodles of fun, too.
Absolutely love Krull - one of my all time favourite fantasy movies. The actor who played Torquil - Alun Armstrong - went to the same grammar school as my dad when they were boys. They were both members of the school's drama society, and are still friends to this day. I've got a photo of them in Hamlet, where my dad is playing Hamlet's father, and Hamlet is played by Alun. Later, dad was a producer in BBC radio, and the first programme he made as part of his producer's training was picked up for broadcast by Radio 4, and he got Alun to narrate it.
Saw it at the cinema as a kid when it first released and loved it. It's an all-time classic for me and still holds up very well. Do Dragonslayer, please. That's another of my childhood favourites.
Watched this movie when I was a kid. LOVED IT! The Slayers were very creepy to me and so was the BEAST! It felt epic and fun and as a kid it really sparked my imagination!
I felt they wasted the Glaive right there. To me they didn't use it enough for it to end up stuck in the Beast. I remember hoping it would come back to him after the destruction of the Beast.
Robbie Coltrane was also in the "Harry Potter" series, and i think there was another big movie that year... mmm... oh yeah! i remember... something called "Return of the Jedi"
@@NiseyNikki80 "The Stuff" and "The Gate" were awesome, too. I love growing up when I did. Have you seen "The Wraith"? That's definitely worth watching.
HOLY SHIT! I've had this little pewter dragon figure for years. So long, in fact, that I had no memory where it had come from. Then, watching this video, I saw it in the clip about the D&D dungeon game! I never knew that game existed, so I don't know how I wound up with that little figure. But thank you! You solved a huge mystery for me!
Totally cool movie. I think I was 5 when it came out. It blended old school Arthurian, science fiction and horror fantasy man. This movie and Dragon Slayer were watched over and over then. :)
followed by : Freedom? We have it! And fame? Nah. It's an empty purse. Count it, go broke. Eat it, go hungry. Seek it, go mad! alun armstrong really played torquil well. very good supporting cast. ken marshall just wasnt a star that the movie needed.
sicfrynut I agree. Alun Armstrong is a great actor. If you are a fan of his, I suggest a series called "New Tricks". It is a fun show with a great ensemble cast.😀
Krull was one of the first movies I ever remembered as earliest as I can since the 80s, it made such an impact on me that it’s my childhood movie above all others. Only Spaced Invaders comes second as that was the first movie I ever saw in theaters.
I went to see the movie multiple times in the theater and I still watch it just about anytime I catch it playing on television. I also still own the comic books and the Atari game. Maybe I should play that game right now...
Yeah when TSR needed cash, anyone showing up with liscening money would have been met with open arms. Krull was way better than the D&D movie that finally got made over a decade later.
Lysette Anthony's "accent" was perfectly acceptable in her much-welcome presence in Bryan Adams' music videos. Don't think anyone would have been put off by it (she's sexy no matter what).
Yeah, there was a lot of that kind of idiocy in movies and television, Boardroom decisions about what they "think" U.S. audiences would like....and completely missing, lol. Same with books (Philosopher's Stone).
Oh, what! Timmy is the bomb! He was the real star. Here's a little factoid for you: In full costume as Darkness, Tim stood over 14' tall from hooves to horn-tip.
Fantasy movies where massive in the 80’s, after a trip to the video shop we almost always came home with one and Krull was undoubtedly my favourite. Great movie.
Another interesting fact about the movie is some of the optical effects in the final movie were the stand in effects used to show the director what the final effect might look like. The optical effects guys ran out of time to do all the shots and were forced to leave some of the stand in effects in the final cut! Years ago now I talked to a couple of the senior guys that were responsible for the optical effects on Krull, I was really impressed as I loved the movie but they were kind of ashamed of the effects work and this was the reason they gave.
As a kid I loved the weapon in this movie. Hell I love this movie altogether it was a great story. On another note I always thought the main protagonists looked like a young Patrick Swayze. Great Job Minty!
I was most impressed and creeped out by the spider's lair scene. Nicely done miniatures and animation, but the scene actually had some meaningful back-story and purpose within the plot, not just a thrilling monster chase scene. The production credits were top-notch - Cinematography by Peter Suschitzky (Empire Strikes Back), Edited by Ray Lovejoy (2001: A Space Odyssey).
Matthew Starfish Funny you should say that, because Minty kept mispronouncing her name so that it sounded like “Lisa.” No offense is intended, Minty, but the character’s name was pronounced more like the actress who played her (Lysette Anthony). I actually didn’t know that another actress voiced her, though. And this is one of my all time favorites! Thanks for the info, Mate.
Yeah that was pretty epic.. Next to Chucky it was the best weapon in the movie. Speilberg must have some love for this movie as The Glaive was not in the original RPO book.
I wouldn't accept that reasoning. Most other sources say the reason was so they could have an older actress who sounded more mature voice Lyssa to make her sound wiser.
James Horner's music always drove the movie...this was 1 of my fave as a 11yr old when released at the cinemas...great adventure & not many survived...nice flashback
I actually wrote that in my response,a British accent sells a movie now, but even in Mintys video he mentions Star Wars, with its numerous British accents and James Bond, the British secret service agent, then krill with a teenager as the lead gets the voice of a 35 year old American.
I wish minty would finally realize that he can’t pull those sunglasses off as well as he thinks he does! Love ya otherwise minty but you just need to lose the shades. That being said could you do a top 10 things about “Time Bandits”?
Addendum to #6: Horner originally composed THIS score for ST2: Wrath of Khan, but it was rejected, and he wrote a new score for THAT film. He shelved it, and found it was perfect when he was hired to score Krull.
I have a copy of the first issue of the Krull comic. I bought it in a funky used records store way back in the 90's. The owner of the store sold me this in a pile of random comics. I mostly wanted the pile because there was a copy of Alien VS Predator from 1989. The only other weird one I remember from the pile was called "Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters."
"Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters." I was chatting with a mate bout comics we used to read and that title came up amongst others, always loved the title :-)
First saw this on HBO, when the cable remote was a 8 foot hard line and there were three rows of buttons. LOL!!! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it. Guaranteed nap movie! I LOVE IT 🥰 💕 💗
Also some of the exteriors were filmed in Italy and in the Canary Islands. This was basically a British made fantasy movie with a Hollywood budget and nominal American star, like Jason and the Argonauts or Clash of the Titans.Speaking of cult movies Minty, you should do one of these videos on the 1987 film, Withnail & I. Not only is it Richard E Grant's finest hour as an actor but it's brilliantly funny but the backstory to it is fascinating.
I loooove Krull. I already knew some of the things you'd mentioned, but there were some new nuggets of info I didn't know. Like Robbie Coltrane was in Flash Gordon (WAT) and that it was originally intended to be a D&D movie, which just makes me love it more. And actually, an early draft of the script feels very D&D-esque, so that makes sense.
I love this movie! The Cyclops death is one of the most traumatic events of my childhood! And if you are still looking for a glaive replica I got one here.
In a time when RU-vidrs are slumming for clicks by promoting negative criticism of video games and movies and screaming that the sky is falling and that we "should all be worried" about anything coming out in 2019, I LOVE that you shed a positive light on all of the reasons why we love these different forms of entertainment. I wish more people would simply appreciate...thats it, just appreciate. It would be a happier world. Stay real Minty!
The first time I heard that bombastic theme music by James Horner I laughed. Now it thrills me, and I love it. Every time. I have it in MP3. Sometimes I get it out and play it in the middle of the day, for no special reason. I love its excitement and textures and the way it builds and builds - and just when you think it's reaching a climax, it builds some more.
Fantastic, fun movie, and a huge guilty pleasure for me. My wife is a chemist, and looked into finding a way to duplicate the "I give fire to water/I take fire from water" effect to incorporate into our wedding. Alas, there was no way to do it that wouldn't have been horrifically dangerous and/or expensive. By the way, I love your taste in movies! Please please please do Hawk the Slayer! It's the perfect complement to Krull!
Ergo - "And you Rell, what would you wish for?" Rell - "Ignorance" I loved the story behind why the cyclops' only had one eye. Having given up the other to see the future, but got screwed by the beast. The only future they see is the day they die.
I've always been aware of Krull's existence, but never actually got round to watching it because my younger siblings liked it, so most of the things they enjoyed I avoided like the plague. However, I'm willing to see the error of my ways and give this one a go in the near future. Happy New Year, Minty xx
