This should have a million likes. There's something about him that almost made it real when watching him. Like his "re-run" roast to Arnold. Dawson was perfect for that role and made the movie!
Having Mick Fleetwood seemed perfectly fitting to me, not random. He was immediately recognizable, and when he explained his history in the movie it made it seem like a future based on reality, not just a fictional future. Another interesting fact: Dynamo (played by Erland van Lidth) did not originally sing opera. This was added because van Lidth was a trained opera singer. The song he sings is a solo from the 3rd Act of The Marriage of Figaro, where the Count swears revenge against Figaro because he feels tormented that Figaro will have Susanna, who isn't interested in the Count. In its overarching meaning of revenge, it fits the scene in Running Man very well.
The book (short story) is so much better. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie at the time. But, in later life having read the story, on my mums recommendation, it is much darker. And much more impactful. A remake, handled well, would or could be excellent. In fact, very surprised Amazon haven’t picked it up… Yet
@@austenpowers Amazon would bastardize it. The only companies that might do a worse job would be Netflix or Disney. Maybe if a small production company tried it, but that wouldn't happen.
My best friend in high school played Electro....Erland van Lidth De Jeude....he was a heavyweight wrestler in the 1984 Olympics. He passed away many years ago....RIP my old friend!
That's fascinating in a "six degrees of separation" kind of way. "The Running Man" has always been one of my all-time favorite movies, along with "Total Recall." I always joke that they are the only movies I ever feel like watching anymore because I'm almost 38 and new movies rarely appeal to me. I like the Stallone and Schwarzenegger flicks I grew up with.
one of my fave movies alongside the Space Odyssey :) I wonder would I like The Running Man without Arnold, without his one liners, charisma, without goofy yet sexy Maria Conchita Alonso and entire tv studio reality show atmosphere including irreplaceable slimy Richard Dawson as Killian. Sticking to the book doesnt have to be good for a movie, specially sci fi genre
And Richard Dawson is known to many of us older folk as Newkirk from Hogan's Heroes. Also, among the freedom fighters is Dweezil Zappa, son of rocker Frank Zappa.
great Scwarzenegger Movie - Really Liked Richard Dawson as Killian in it - he was comedic in Hogan's Heroes, at the time he was a friendly game show host on Family Feud, which is why he was cast - but he's a slimy, two- faced p rick here, a great playing against type role
dont forget that dawson was also on the panel on match game for many years, along with charles nelson riley, and bret sommers with gene rayburn as the host. in 1970 dawson hosted the daytime game show "lucky pair", and yes i had to look that up.
@@richardbohm5778 I think "Lucky Pair" was a show that was mainly seen in Los Angeles. In 1975, he briefly hosted his first national show, a revival of the 1950s show "Masquerade Party". It only lasted the one season in weekly syndication.
I read the book years ago and it is great! I had it as part of a 4 in 1 called the Backman Novels, which is no longer available since one of the stories was withdrawn and no longer published. I also loved "The Long Walk" which was in the same book.
You took my comment! To be fair to Arnie, it would be tough to have that many director changes. But still it's hard to see how the movie wouldn't look like a tv show.
The line, "There he is, the leading rusher." when FireBall goes out into the Zone is apt, FireBall played by Jim Brown, was a Cleveland Browns player and League Leading Rusher for 62, 63 and 64 seasons.
I always loved playing Smash TV in the arcades and Super Smash TV on the Super Nintendo back in the day. It always reminded me of what Running Man would be like if the contestants wanted to play and weren't forced to.
No way the best line is when Arnold tells Killian he lives to see him eat that contract but to save room for his fist because he's going to ram it down his throat and rip out his spine!
When I first heard of this movie, I was surprised to hear about Richard Dawson being in it. He was perfect for the role of Damon Killian, considering Dawson had then fairly recently come off of hosting Family Feud for about a decade. Aside from this film, his most notable acting role was as Corporal Peter Newkirk in the sitcom Hogan's Heroes. You'd never think a show set in a WWII prisoner of war camp could be funny, could you? It obviously worked, as it ran for six seasons.
I love this movie - so much so, I bought the DVD. I also have Predator. Both are amazing films. I enjoy your looks into movies I love, it makes them come even more alive. Thanks, Minty!
“I’ll live to see you eat that contract! But you better leave some room for my fist BECAUSE IM GONNA RAM IT IN YOUR STOMACH AND BREAK YOUR GODDAM SPINE!!”
In my opinion the best quote in the movie wasn't from Ahnold or even one of the main characters.... "You're lucky he didn't kill you too. Or rape you then kill you... or kill you then rape you." And it's the way she says it too. Plus she's hot.
Ironic - just last night I watched Total Recall, in which Arnold played what was supposed to be a weak, ordinary office cubicle worker. They changed it to a construction worker for the movie to explain why he was so big (did I learn this in a Minty video? Can't *recall*... ). It seems after he achieved superstar status, that once Arnold attached himself to a production he sort of took it over and everything had to be changed to fit around his persona. Script re-writes to add in his trademark one-liners, etc. Also, it sort of works that the movie feels like a TV show, since that's exactly what it was about - a show called Running Man.
I came to the comments just to complain about "Anything". How dare you say that about "Anything". "Anything" was a huge plot point and you didnt even mention it. I mean how could you NOT talk about "Anything". Great vid as always Mark. Thanks for this.
thebovineavenger i was gonna complain about him lumping everything into 1 group called anything.. I mean geez its called everything for a reason.. How dare you even try to suggest that its now anything.
Gus Rethwisch (Buzzsaw) was a powerlifter who competed in ‘The World’s Strongest Man’ contests. So, he could actually lift a motorcycle over his head without too much difficulty, just like Buzzsaw did. Rethwisch also played one of the “Klane brothers” in the movie ‘Twins’ (1988).
Minty, I’ve watched several dozen of your “10 things” videos, and this one is definitely the first to make me spew my drink in laughter. The same clip of Arnold used over and over and over did it for me. Lol!
Hey Minty! There's one more music connection in the movie. One of the other freedom fighters in the movie was Dweezil Zappa, the son of Frank Zappa. Thought you would like this extra tidbit.
Hi Minty, great vid as always. Just wanted to mention that one of the ways RM seemed to be the most eerily prescient was with it's brief look at the 'Climbing for Dollars' gameshow, as now in the UK on one of our ITV channels we have a gameshow with a somewhat similar premise called 'Release the Hounds'. When I first saw it, all I could think of was this movie! Does make you wonder what's going to be next, doesn't it?
My wife and I love your interesting facts and trivia on so many of our favorite movies. I hope you're having as much fun making these we have watching them!
Hey, Minty. You forgot to mention that this movie also became the main inspiration for hit arcade game "Smash TV", since they both involve violent game shows in the not-so-distant future. "Big money... Big prizes… I love it!"
Running Man game would be cool in today's age. 1 stalker vs a bunch of other people. Different stages and different tasks the other players need to complete to escape, or possibly try to gang up on overpowered stalker and kill him to win as well.
In the film a can of soda was 6 bucks. It was supposed to be a price so high, that it was 100% unthinkable. In like 2009, I was at a newly opened Cowboys Stadium. There was a vending machine and the price if a 20oz? 6 bucks. Keep in mind that the fountain drink was 6 bucks so I guess the soda had to follow suit. I immediately thought of this film.
Hi Minty, I just found your channel and I am watching the "10 things" series. "The Running Man" is my favorite of Stephen King's Richard Bachman books, and yes there are a ton of differences. One could probably make a thirty minute video discussing them.
Sadly, "absolute zero" (0 degrees Kelvin, or -273 degrees Celsius) wasn't known outside of the scientific community until an experiment with solidified mercury as an electromagnetic superconductor for elevated trains was made public around 1985.
Hahahaha, that book cover at 3:44 is such an obvious ripoff of the poster for the original Rollerball starring James Caan. Amazing. I've always seen the movie cover on the book.
You left out three things. 1. Jesse Ventura, who played Captain Freedom, was in Predator also. 2. Another musician, Dweezil Zappa appeared in this movie as well. 3. Richard Dawson was a panelist on The Match Game, another game show.
You mentioned Mick Fleetwood but not Dweezil Zappa? For shame! By the way, the DVD extras contain a surprisingly good serious documentary about the erosion of privacy rights, comparing the world of the movie to the world at the time of the DVD's release. It's even more relevant today.
@@ramonantoniobennett-ryuuke6301 I doubt very much that Mike Hagar is based on Don Frye or Dan Severn, considering the first Final Fight came out in 1989... Still, he could be based in part on Ventura... I'd go with that.
@kevin nelson One of Christopher Reeve's greatest movies was called Somewhere in Time. We watched it in school and I was amazed how much I liked the film. Also written by Richard Matheson who did I am Legend.
Would love to see a remake of Night of the Comet. Yeah, the original is a great classic, but it has a lot of 80s cheesiness, too. I think they could do it justice and not screw it up completely.
Who here has read it? Been over 20 years since I last read it. English version is best.. Naturally but the Icelandic translation was my first... oh baby baby! What.. a book! Too much for T V S.King's best work imho. About 906.054.648.485 times better than "the librarian" or something.. where the old lady turns into a vacuum cleaner.. worst. Ever. Hahaha I could probably write an essay 20% of the books length in a few hours from memory. The Running Man. Top 3 books ever imho. Anyone read it? It starts with chapter 100 and counts Down. How far? Give it a chance.. if it sux in your humble opinion... I'll pour eleven buckets of ice water over me in 44 seconds. And eat a hat after it. and probably cry from shock and have a fit.. for your entertainment.
Another great video Minty. I knew of 'The Kissing Man' American host. But didn't realise he played the bad guy in the film. I'm from the UK so wouldn't have really known. Nice one for that.
Random fun fact, the Actor who played buzzsaw, as big and strong as he was, was not able to lift the 25-30 pound chainsaw over his head.. I guess someone skipped Shoulder day!
Mike Bushnell i know which he had on his back. Mind you Mac seemed to handle it alright in Predator and I swear they used that one in T2 too. Also the M16 with M203 he uses in Predator is the same one Tony Montana uses im Scarface
AWESOME!!! loved this movie growing up, hilarious one liners. "I don't do requests" and "Cause Im going to say PLEASE" and "go ahead, won't show on this shirt" "see you at the ten year prison reunion"
Ha ha I lived in China and had to look it up. It had nothing to do with the 80's movie. When I was living there in early 2000 we would go to certain shops and buy cheap DVDs. I still have a copy from my time in Thailand or while living in China.
Sven Ole Thorsen has appeared in a number of Arnold's movies. The two of them knew each other from their competitive bodybuilding days and have been friends for a long time. Thorsen is actually one of Arnold's most frequent collaborator, serving in both acting and stunt man capacities in a number of his movies. Both he and Arnold also enjoy a good cigar.
well i could be wrong but i thought it was the short story called "The long walk" where they were children who were volunteered to participate in a state sponsored television show were they walked from of course bangor main to Florida and they had to wear collars and if they didn't keep pace they would basically be executed be because the collars would go off..i actually read that short story by Richard Bachmann but i could be wrong it was sad and sadistic were the people cheered for their states representatives and at the end thry walked for so long their shoes gave out and were down to their bloody socks.. but i could be wrong
On "The Long Walk" you have it mostly correct. However, they appeared to be in their late teens & volunteered/were conscripted to do this walk. They didn't wear collars but had to maintain a walking pace of 4 MPH no matter what & were monitored; if they dropped below that pace they got a verbal warning - after 3 verbal warnings they were executed - if they managed to walk an hour after a warning without accumulating another warning, a warning would be forgiven. You are correct: it was indeed sad & sadistic. Incidentally, King wrote this story in the late '60's, several years before his first novel "Carrie" was published in 1974.
They were both part of the anthology "The Bachman Books". There was also a story in there called "Rage" which sort of foreshadowed school shootings by students.
@@alexisdiva9 ah thanks glad you read it too. It was a long time ago when I read that...I thought it sounded more like hunger games....but yeah thanks man👍
I've heard people say it's set in 2019, but where is that actually stated? I watched it recently and noticed it starts in 2017, then it mentions IIRC "18 months later" or something, but at that rate it could have been 2018. Did I miss something? EDIT: Nvm, I got to the part with the poster...
