I saw this movie when I was a kid in a weird way. It was playing on late night tv and I started half-way through. I fell asleep right before the ending. I later learned that it played twice on the same station back to back... Anyway I woke up as the second showing was just beginning. I didn't realize this at the time and as the movie got going again back to the place I'd originally started watching, I became very unnerved and thought I was going crazy.

The remake is just more accessible with the pop culture references and soundtrack. I do love it but I understand why critics hated it. Cruise is the main issue. He was too old for the part and his refusal to allow his famous features to he more mangled after the accident was just arrogance. In the Spanish film, the characters face is completely destroyed after the accident. The David Aames character is just not likeable at all so it is difficult to feel sorry for him.

I can't stop thinking about Vanilla Sky, I watched it for the first time in early 00s. I liked it back then, but revisited it again in December and it's one of the best films I've ever watched. The soundtrack is perfect. And now with the metaverse coming, it feels even more timely. Funny story about this movie. I had never seen it. And about a year and a half ago it came on one of the movie channels so I DVR'd it to watch later with my friend. So she comes over for the weekend and we put it on and watch it all the way up to the rooftop scene. Then, for some reason during recording, my DVR decided to stop recording the movie right before David makes his choice leaving us with our jaws on the floor like. "WHAT?!!" We had to wait until it came back on the movie channel so I could record it again and watch the ending. That took about two weeks.

I saw "Abre Los Ojos" in Spanish class. It was trippy. Penelope Cruz plays the same character in both versions of the story, but I have heard her performance in "Vanilla Sky" described as "flat" compared to the Spanish film. If you like "Vanilla Sky", "Abre Los Hojos" is worth checking out.

I love this flick. It's one of the films that I rented and, after watching it, went out an immediately bought. It is haunting and beautiful and always lingers a few days after watching it. @SmirkingRevenge
@SmirkingRevenge 2 месяца назад
@@mikekaraoke - Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying. It's an interesting hint that McCabe isn't real because he is the only one with any details. He is a "living, breathing" character, whereas his daughters aren't even fleshed out enough to have visible faces. Even the conversation they're having is a little off and sounds almost nonsensical. Then there's the background extras. Nobody is moving, except one waiter (which I'm guessing was a mistake, since no one else really does). McCabe feels almost like an animated character against the stationary background. It's not something I even picked up on the first time I watched the scene.

Vanilla Sky is a masterpiece and it’s also the Plato’s Cave allegory as are so many other movies and television shows. Tom Cruise starts out materialistic and becomes awakened to the dream state he lives in. The Matrix, Dark City, Truman Show, Severance, WestWorld, Jacob’s Ladder, Shutter Island, just to name a few are all also Plato’s Cave allegories. Gnosticism at its core.
